How to unlock a Boost Mobile phone and use it with other carriers

  • To unlock a Boost Mobile phone, you'll need to call the Boost Mobile Customer Care line at 1-888-266-7848.
  • Before you can unlock your phone, it needs to have been connected to your Boost Mobile account for at least a year.
  • Military personnel who are deployed overseas can unlock their Boost Mobile phones without waiting a year.
  • Visit Insider's Tech Reference library for more stories.

When you buy a phone directly from a cell phone carrier — for example, Boost Mobile — they partially own the device. This boost mobile account number prepaid that if you ever want to leave that company for another, you'll either need to give up the phone, or go through an annoying transfer process.

However, you can skip that process and gain full ownership of your phone by unlocking it. Unlocking a phone from a carrier makes it so you can switch companies and keep the same phone.

If you're a Boost Mobile customer, unlocking your phone just takes a phone call. Here's how to unlock your Boost Mobile phone.

How to unlock a Boost Mobile phone

Before anything, you need to make sure that you meet Boost Mobile's unlocking requirements. These are:

  • The phone has been active on your Boost Mobile account for at least a year.
  • Your Boost Mobile account is in "good standing," with no past-due balances.
  • The phone hasn't been reported as lost or stolen.

Additionally, the phone needs to be "SIM unlock capable." You should ask about your specific phone's capabilities when you call Boost Mobile, but in general, if the phone was made in 2015 or later it should be fine.

If your phone isn't SIM unlock capable, Boost Mobile can provide you with an "MSL Code" which may work to unlock it instead.

Quick tip: The only exception to these rules is for active military personnel who are deployed overseas. Overseas military personnel can unlock their phones without having them active for a year, and each phone number on the account is allowed to unlock up to two devices per year.

If you meet all the requirements, call Boost Mobile's customer support number at 1-888-266-7848. When you connect to a representative, ask for your phone to be unlocked. If you're active overseas military personnel, you'll also have to provide proof of your overseas deployment papers.

The unlock request can take up to two business days to process. Keep your SIM card inside of the phone until you get an email or notification that the unlock went through properly.

How to Activate a Prepaid Boost Phone

When you purchase a prepaid phone from Boost Mobile, the first order of business is to activate your new phone. First, install the SIM card in your new phone. Next charge your phone. Ideally, you should allow the phone to acquire a full charge. Finally, activate your phone online or by calling the Boost Mobile activation number. You can port your existing phone number or choose a new number during the activation process. You must purchase a prepaid plan or group of minutes in order to activate the phone.

2Unpack the phone

Unpack the phone, accessories, SIM card and manual from the original box and packing materials. Pop the SIM card out of the credit card-sized holder. Keep the SIM card holder handy because your SIM ID number is printed on the back of the card. You can use your SIM ID number or your IMEI to activate your phone.

3Remove the back of your phone

Remove the back of your phone, then remove the battery.

4Insert the SIM card

Insert the SIM card into the SIM card slot under the battery area. While the battery is out of the phone, locate your phone’s IMEI number on the label in the battery area. Record this number if you would rather use the IMEI instead of the SIM ID number to activate your phone.

6Open the Boost Mobile Activation tool

Open the Boost Mobile Activation tool in a Web browser.

Type your phone’s IMEI number in the “ESN or MEID” field, or type the SIM ID number in the SIM ID field. Click the “Start Activation Process” option. The Choose Your Phone Number screen displays.

Follow the on-screen instructions to port your existing phone number. You can also select a new phone number from this screen. You will need to provide your phone number, account number with the original carrier, your account PIN or password, your name and billing address and your Social Security Number to port your existing number to your Boost Mobile phone. Click “Continue” once you have chosen your new phone number. The Choose Your Plan page opens.

Click your desired plan from the list of available plans for your device. The Account Setup screen opens.

Type your name, address, billing information and email in the Account Setup form, then click “Continue.” Review your account settings, and then click “Continue” to proceed to pay for your new plan.

Click the “Pay Now” option to pay the first month of charges for your phone. Click “Finish" once the payment has processed. Your phone will be immediately activated. Attempt a phone call from your new phone to test connectivity.

7Phone Activation

Dial the Boost Mobile Activation line at 888-BOOST-4U (1-888-266-7848) from another phone. You will need to have your IMEI number or SIM ID number when you call. An automated voice prompts you for your Boost Mobile phone number.

Key in your Boost Mobile phone number if you have an existing account. If you are setting up your account for the first time, wait for the prompt to select a new number or port your existing number.

Follow the prompts to enter the IMEI or SIM ID on the keypad.

Provide your name, address and any additional information, as requested. Enter your payment information, when prompted, and purchase your desired plan. When the call is completed, your phone is pending activation. Wait a few minutes, then attempt to place a call from your phone.

Boost Mobile Review - Lots of Data for Less

Unlimited Plans with Shrinking Bills

Boost Mobile fits the bill if you're looking for an affordable unlimited everything plan that costs less the longer you're on it. . They also have pay-as-you-go and daily plans but their main attraction is the bill that shrinks.

Coverage by Sprint

Coverage is provided by Sprint, so their coverage should be the same. To check out yours, go to the Coverage Map and enter your zip code to see the coverage in your area.

Rates and Plans

When you first go to their plans page, it seems as though they only have unlimited plans, but when you select "All Plans" you see a tab for their Pay as You Go prepaid plan.

So you have a choice between the PayGo plans, daily unlimited plans, and monthly unlimited plans.

Paygo Basic Plan

The PayGo plan is actually pretty expensive.

Calling and Texting Rates

All domestic calls cost 20 cents per minute all the time, i.e. on days, nights and weekends. They had dropped this rate down to 10 cents per minute, but they've raised it back up again. Text messages also cost 20 cents each (!) to send and receive.

50 Cents a Day for Web Usage

The one good thing about this plan is that web usage costs just 50 cents per day which does limit the damage if you do a lot of web-surfing on your phone.

Other parts of this plan are unlimited walkie-talkie usage for $1.00 a day on the days that you use it. If you never use it, you can have this deactivated.

MMS (picture and audio) messages are 25 cents to send and receive.

International

There's a $5 International Connect package for unlimited texting to international numbers plus unlimited calling to Mexico. There's also a $10 International package for unlimited calling to over 30 countries (check which ones first before you sign up).

Yearly Cost

If you don't use the web or walkie-talkie service, then 1000 minutes or messages a year would cost you $200.

If you want the web, then add about $180 to that or at least $380 for the year.

Daily Unlimited Plan

$2 and $3 Boost Plans

For $2 a day, you get unlimited everything (except international stuff) on all phones except for Blackberry phones. So it's $2 per day for unlimited talk, text, web, walkie talkie etc.

For Blackberry phones, the same unlimited features cost $3 per day.

Note: The daily charge is deducted every day whether you use the phone or not.

Therefore, this plan is NOT like the $2 a day plans from Verizon or AT&T.

Annual Cost

$2 a day works out to $730 a year.
$3 a day works out to $1095 a year.

So this plan is not really worth it compared to the monthly unlimited plans unless you plan to switch back and forth between the daily and pay as you go plans.

Monthly Unlimited Plans with Shrinkage

For $50 a month, you get unlimited everything - talk, text, and web on regular phones. For Android phones, the cost is $55 per month, and for Blackberry phones, it's $60 per month.

Shrinkage

Your bill goes down steadily with on-time payments. You can reduce your cost to about $40 per month on the $50 and $55 per month plan to about $45 per month on your Blackberry plan.

Annual Cost

At $50 per month, you pay $600 per year. At $55 per month, it costs $660 per year and $720 at $60 per month.

With "Shrinkage", you'll actually pay a lot less. If you stay on the plan until your bill is $40 - $45 per month, then you'll save up to $180 off your annual cost.

Unlimited Select Plans

If you want to start out at a lower but constant rate, you can go for their newer unlimited select plans which start at $40 per month for unlimited talk, text and 500 MB of high speed data. The $50 and $60 per month select plans then offer higher amounts of high-speed data. These particular plans are very similar to the Net10 unlimited plans.

Minutes

Maintaining your Minutes

You have to recharge or "re-Boost" your account at least once every 90 days to keep your minutes from expiring. If your account balance goes to zero you have 60 days to add money to keep using your number and the service.

ReBoost Card Prices

Airtime cards come in denominations of $20, $30, and $50. You can buy them in retail stores like Best Buy, Walmart, and Target.

There are lots of other ways to add money to your account.

Online

You can use your debit/credit card or bank account to add money to your account online. You can recharge automatically with Auto-ReBoost or only when you want to such as when you're low on minutes or your minutes are expiring.

This means that if you ever want to leave that company for another, you'll either need to give up the phone, or go through an annoying transfer process.

SIM card being inserted into Android phone
Pheelings Media/Getty Images

    Spotty coverage in rural areas

Published on December 11, 2020

If all you want is a prepaid phone plan with a low monthly bill and some data, then Boost Mobile could be the perfect carrier for you. You’ll even get some nice extras, like HD video streaming and unlimited music streaming (as long as you’re using one of Boost’s music partners).

That said, Boost Mobile doesn't quite make our list of the best prepaid providers. Its Sprint-network service can be spotty, and it has a limited BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program. We'll talk more about these issues further down in this Boost Mobile review.

Boost Mobile prepaid plans and pricing

Boost Mobile has middle-of-the-pack pricing, but it throws in some nice extras like hotspot data.

Boost Mobile’s pricing is about standard for the prepaid industry. Both its price for 3 GB of data and its unlimited plan pricing are roughly on par with the competition.

As for Boost Mobile’s actual service details, it’s a mixed bag. If you travel around the US a lot and need to use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot while you’re waiting in the airport, then Boost is a great choice. It gives way more hotspot data than most prepaid providers, and even more than some of the big-name brands.

Boost Mobile doesn’t offer international roaming, but you can get international coverage for places like Canada and Mexico, plus international texting, through an add-on plan.

How much data do you actually need?

Light Bulb

Do you need 3 GB a month, or should you shell out for that unlimited data plan? Read our handy data guide to understand your data needs better.

On the flip side, Boost Mobile’s Unlimited Gigs plan puts some limits on music streaming and gaming. Its unlimited plans limit music speeds to 500 Kbps and gaming to 2 Mbps. (It's pretty standard in the industry to have some limits on cheaper unlimited data plans).

You shouldn’t really notice issues with streaming that new album or playing Alto’s Adventure, but Boost Mobile also says it can slow down your speeds “during congestion.” Which means anytime the network gets busy, your streaming can take a hit.

What about unlimited music streaming?

All of Boost Mobile’s plans give you unlimited music streaming, which means no matter how many hours you spend listening to Beyoncé on Spotify, it won’t count toward your data usage.

That’s especially great if you have the 3 GB plan and you stream music every day on your hour-long commute. Boost’s unlimited music deal frees up high-speed data you can use on other things, like using GPS navigation to find that restaurant your friend recommended.

Boost Mobile's music partners

Megaphone

Boost Mobile gives you unlimited music streaming only through one of its “music partners.” Apple Music listeners, take note: that service is not on the list.
Music partners include:

Pandora
Spotify
iHeartRadio
Napster
8tracks
Slacker Radio

What happens if you go over your data or hotspot limit?

Because all of Boost Mobile’s plans are technically unlimited, there’s no automatic fee for going over a data limit. With the 3 GB plan, your speeds will just go down to a snail’s crawl for the rest of the month.

If you just can’t go without streaming YouTube on the train home and you need more high-speed data before the month ends, you can pay a fee to get more.

Data boost prices for Boost Mobile's 3 GB plan:

  • 1 GB LTE data - $5/mo.
  • 2 GB LTE data - $10/mo.

Need more than 3 GB every month? You can set up a recurring data boost and just pay the fee for one or two extra gigs every month.

Boost Mobile plan comparison

As we've mentioned, Boost isn't the cheapest prepaid provider out there. But let's look at some of the raw numbers. Here's a comparison between Boost's 3 GB and similar plans from other prepaid carriers.

Boost Mobile 3 GB plan comparison

Boost Mobile Family Plans

Boost offers some discounts when you add lines, but there are cheaper family plans out there.

You can save a few bucks and the hassle of managing multiple bills by bundling together with your loved ones.

Boost Mobile offers some discounts on family plans. Here's a look at some of the cheapest options for a 3-line family plan. You can design your own Boost Mobile family plan on Whistle Out's website to see how much it will cost.

Boost Mobile family plans with 3 lines

These family plans are a great way to save some money if you're already set on using Boost Mobile. But if you're shopping around for the best family plan deals from any carrier, we recommend checking out these other plans.

Boost Mobile cell phones and devices

Boost Mobile has the most popular phones in stock, which is good because you might not be able to bring your own device.

Boost Mobile has a pretty good phone selection. You can find the latest iPhone and Samsung models in stock. And that’s a good thing because Boost Mobile does not have the best BYOD program. Here's a look at some of the most popular phones that Boost Mobile offers.

We recommend just buying a phone from Boost Mobile directly if you can because it makes the whole process easier. But if you love your phone and can’t imagine leaving it, you can check if it’s actually compatible with Boost service.

You’ll notice some pretty unique stipulations when it comes to compatibility. Many popular phones, like the Google Pixel 3, will not work with a Boost SIM card.

How good is Boost Mobile’s performance?

Boost Mobile uses Sprint’s network, which means it doesn’t have the best service (for now).

Any phone on Boost Mobile’s service gets about the same service as any phone on Sprint’s service. That sounds good until you remember Sprint’s service is not the best. Most studies rank it fourth out of the four major wireless companies.1

However, since Sprint and T-Mobile have recently merged, it's possible that Boost will transition to T-Mobile's network, which is significantly better than Sprint's network. We'll keep you posted if Boost's network gets upgrades to T-Mobile's network in the near future.

For now, take a look at Sprint's coverage map to see how robust the network is in your area.

You'll probably notice those big coverage gaps in places like Idaho and New Mexico. That said, if you live in an area that does have Sprint coverage, then you probably won’t have any issues keeping your phone at full bars.

Boost Mobile customer service

Boost Mobile gives you a bunch of different ways to reach customer service reps. We recommend chat or social media.

boost mobile twitter

Just like cable providers, cell phone companies don’t have the best reputations for good customer service. But our test interactions with Boost Mobile’s customer service reps went pretty well.

You can call in, live chat someone from Boost’s website, or use social media like Twitter. We say skip calling in if you can—it’s a lot of automated menus and wait times. But Boost Mobile’s social media response to us was fast and helpful. Twitter for the win.

Recap—Is Boost Mobile any good?

Boost Mobile doesn’t top our list of favorite prepaid providers because its BYOD program is limited and its actual phone service isn’t the best out there. But we do like that Boost includes unlimited music streaming on certain platforms, and its customer service was easy to reach. It's a great option for music-lovers who want a cheap, simple plan.

  • Plans: None of Boost Mobile’s plans will cut off your data or charge you automatic overages. We generally recommend Boost’s 3 GB plan over its unlimited options, unless you want a lot of hotspot data.
  • Performance: Boost Mobile uses Sprint’s network, which isn’t always the best. But Sprint does work pretty well in some areas, so just make sure your area is one of them before you sign on.
  • Customer service: We had positive experiences with Boost Mobile’s customer service team. We recommend reaching out to them through live chat or social media for the fastest and easiest response.
  • Overall: If you want a cheap plan with unlimited music streaming and generous hotspot data allowance, then sign up for Boost Mobile. If you're picky about your devices or live in a rural area, check out other carriers.
