If you share an Amazon account with your partner—or let other people use your Prime login—you might occasionally want to hide an order from your history. That way, you won’t spoil the surprise of a birthday gift, or your kids won’t see something they shouldn’t when shopping for school supplies. Here’s how to do it.

How to Archive or Hide an Order on Amazon

Set up Amazon Household Instead

Archiving orders to a little-known section of the user interface isn’t a great solution, to be honest. Sure, it works, but someone who’s curious could still easily find the order details. Instead, if you have Amazon Prime, there’s a much better solution: Amazon Household.

amazon household information

Amazon Household lets you share your Prime benefits and digital content with another adult and up to four teens and children. This means that both you and your partner can have your own Amazon accounts, order each other whatever secret gifts you like, and get the same free delivery options—without paying for a second Prime account. No more account-sharing needed.

It also means that you can set your teenage kids up with their own Amazon accounts so that they can order things with your approval, but they won’t be able to pry through your order list to see what they’re getting for Christmas.

To set up an Amazon Household, head to the Amazon Household page and follow our full walkthrough.

It’s been over two decades and counting since Jeff Bezos launched Amazon out of his garage. Thanks to the buyers and sellers with active accounts on Amazon, the once online bookstore is now one of the largest online retailers, enjoying an indisputable popularity.

Chances are you’ve purchased something through Amazon in the past, but maybe you’re ready to leave because you don’t agree with the company’s practices or policies.  Or perhaps you just want to control your spending or switch from Amazon to another online store.

Whatever the reason, you can delete your Amazon account for good and delete your sensitive information from the web. In my case, Amazon knows so much about me due to my purchases, I wanted to delete my current account and create a new one just so they don’t have so much private data about me.

What You Need To Know Before You Delete Your Amazon Account

Few things are more frustrating than trying to delete an account from an online platform that makes account deletion infuriatingly difficult. Amazon’s account deletion process isn’t easy to figure out, but we’re going to show you how to delete your Amazon account.

Before you distance yourself from Amazon altogether, there are a few things you need to know about deleting your Amazon account.

Once you delete your account, you can’t reverse or recover things like gift card balances and digital purchases. Any balance on your Amazon account vanishes the moment you delete it, because balances are tied to the account. You can’t ask for a gift card voucher either.

Similarly, any digital purchases like games or software libraries that you bought through your Amazon account will also disappear when you delete the account. You won’t be able to re-download eBooks, videos, digital amazon deleted my order history, music, games or other digital content you own.

If you’re an Audible listener, Kindle reader, or you use Amazon Pay on other sites, these options won’t be available when you delete the account.

Any open orders will be cancelled. All your customer data such as buyer reviews, any photos you uploaded to Amazon, and discussion posts will also be removed. You’ll also lose your Amazon Prime account because there’s no way to order via Prime once the main Amazon account is deleted.

If you have issues with Prime, you don’t need to delete the entire Amazon account. Just change the payment details for Prime in your account settings, or cancel the subscription altogether.

You might want to stop at this point and consider whether you really want to lose everything associated with your account. If you’re still ready to leave Amazon, you can delete your account from the platform completely.

Note: If you want to delete your purchase history, you can close the old account and create a new one. This way, you can start with a clean slate and build a new purchase history.

How To Delete An Amazon Account

Previously, closing your Amazon account was a straightforward process and you didn’t need to contact the customer support team to help you.

Amazon has since removed that old way of closing accounts from its website. Going forward, you’ll need to contact the Amazon customer support team if you want to close or delete your account for good.  Here are the steps you’ll need to take to get started:

  1. Sign in with the Amazon account you want to delete.
  2. Click Help at the bottom of the page.
  1. Scroll down and click Browse Help Topics > Need More Help?
  1. Click Contact Us.
  1. At the top of the customer support page, click Prime or Something Else.
  1. Select Login and Security under the Tell us more section.
  1. Choose Close my account in the new field.
  1. You’ll see options for contacting the Amazon team by phone, email, or chat.
  • If you select Email, enter the reason for closing your Amazon account and send the message. In 12 hours, you’ll receive an email with warnings about what you’ll lose when you delete your account, and instructions for closing the account.
  • If you select the Phone option, enter your phone number in the new page. Wait for an Amazon customer representative to call you with the instructions.

Note: For speedy assistance, Amazon recommends that you use the Call Me Now feature and you’ll receive help right away based on the information you’ve provided. You can also call the general toll free helpline 1 (888) 280-4331 and answer a series of questions to verify your identity.

  • The Chat option also opens a new window, where you can enter the reason why you’d like to talk to an Amazon associate. The associate will email you detailed instructions for closing your account. Once you receive the email and have read it carefully, click the link to confirm the account deletion.

Note: When you contact an Amazon customer support representative or associate via email, phone, or chat, they’ll ask you whether you have any issues and offer some solutions. If you’re sure you want to delete your Amazon account, the Amazon associate or support representative won’t hesitate to help you do so.

Leave Amazon For Good

Amazon doesn’t make account deletion an obvious process of going to account settings and selecting that option. You have to go through customer support to start and complete the process. Obviously, Amazon doesn’t want you to leave or close your account, so making the process a bit difficult acts as a deterrent from people closing their accounts.

Will Amazon Ban Your Customer Account If You Have Too Many Returns?

Usually, I have good luck with things I buy from Amazon, but when I had to return two defective items two weeks apart, I wondered if they track the number and frequency of returns. And if those rates are high, suspend or close an account. The answer, it turns out, is yes. Amazon doesn't disclose how many returns, how often, and for what reasons they may close an account, so consumers are in the dark. This is a statement given to CNBC:

"We want everyone to be able to use Amazon, but there are rare occasions where someone abuses our service over an extended period of time. We never take these decisions lightly, but with over 300 million customers around the world, we take action when appropriate to protect the experience for all our customers. If a customer believes we've made an error, we encourage them to contact us directly so we can review their account and take appropriate action." 1

Not all bans are complete. Some customers are allowed to continue making purchases but aren't allowed to return anything. A full ban means losing access to any gift card balance and the remainder of a Prime membership.

Easy Returns

Online shopping is not like in-store shopping. We don't get to see or try on items. So many people assume that online retailers are ok with consumers ordering products to try out and making a return if they aren't satisfied for whatever reason. And it doesn't help that some retailers make the return process very convenient. Amazon offers free returns and convenient drop-off locations like Kohls and UPS Stores. They also offer Prime Wardrobe, which allows customers to try up to eight items, pay for what they keep, and return the rest. This leaves consumers with the impression that returns are an integral part of online retailing, something they don't expect to be penalized for doing. But returns are expensive for retailers. More than half of all Amazon sales come from third-party sellers. Many of these sellers are small businesses that can't afford high return rates.

Examples of High Return Rates

It appears Amazon will ban accounts if they determine someone is taking advantage of the system. The number of returns and the kinds of metrics they are using that will trigger a ban is unknown. It can be difficult for customers to avoid being banned if they don't know what the criteria are. Amazon doesn't specify what they mean by "abusing the system." Does it just refer to suspected fraud or does it also apply when the cost of returns exceeds the profit the company is making from a particular customer?

The law firm behind has a blog post titled Amazon's Return Policy: suspended for returning items too often that includes a table with a banned customer's purchases and returns. Over a 5-year period, this customer had 550 purchases and 43 returns.2 That might not look too bad but that's an approximately 8 percent return rate. And if those returns are mostly high-priced items like electronics and the nonreturned items are mostly cheaper items like books, the company may be experiencing a loss from this customer. According to a Guardian article, a banned customer had va unemployment direct deposit orders with 37 returns. That's an almost 11 percent return rate.3

Even if returns are legit, they may trigger whatever algorithm is being used to detect fraud. The higher the return rate, the higher the risk.

Examples of Abuses

Committing fraud is one reason many people get banned. An example is swap scamming. This is when someone buys an electronic item to replace something that has broken. They then claim the new item is defective and return the one that had gone bad. Retailers pay attention to this and often know when the returned item is not the one that was sent.

Some people buy items because they are being paid to write fake reviews. Because they purchased the product, their review is labeled Verified, which gives it more legitimacy. They then return the item.

Read More From Toughnickel

When initiating a return, you are asked why you are making it. If you say you changed your mind, there's a possibility you may be charged for the return. If you claim an item is defective when it isn't, that may be used against you.

Some consumers buy an item and then when they find it cheaper elsewhere, return the original purchase.

Be Cautious

Since you don't know what will trigger a ban, it pays to be cautious with returns. Definitely don't commit fraud and reconsider continually making returns to save a few dollars. Go over your orders to get a rough idea of what your return rate is. Many people may not have a good idea of how many items they return. I went over my orders for 2020. I placed 106 orders and had three returns. Since I order from Amazon Fresh every week, those 106 orders account for hundreds of items which puts my return rate well under one percent. Bbva bancomer houston most expensive of those three returned items was a defective $50 electronic device that I had replaced rather than refunded.

If you have a lot of returns, you may want to consider how to bring that rate down. Do you buy a lot of clothes or shoes that you return if you don't like the fit? Consider using Amazon Wardrobe if you are a Prime member. Are there amazon deleted my order history cheap items you normally return if they're defective that you may be willing to take a loss on? Do you have packages that go missing often which you then ask to replace? Consider having purchases sent to an Amazon locker instead, if they are offered in your area. With electronic items, consider buying from Best Buy, Target, and Walmart as well. That way, if you aren't happy with your purchases, you will be spreading returns among a variety of retailers.

How many returns is too many before your Amazon account is banned?

A look at the intimate details Amazon knows about us

Nov 19 (Reuters) - As a Virginia lawmaker, Ibraheem Samirah has studied internet privacy issues and debated how to regulate tech firms’ collection of personal data. Still, he was stunned to learn the full details of the information Inc (AMZN.O) has collected on him.

The e-commerce giant amazon deleted my order history more than 1,000 contacts from his phone. It had records of exactly which part of the Quran that Samirah, who was raised as a Muslim, had listened to on Dec. 17 of last year. The company knew every search he had made on its platform, including one for books on “progressive community organizing” and other sensitive health-related inquiries he thought were private.

“Are they selling products, or are they spying on everyday people?” asked Samirah, a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates.

Samirah was among the few Virginia legislators peoples federal savings bank boston ma opposed an industry-friendly, Amazon-drafted state privacy bill that passed earlier this year. At Reuters’ request, Samirah asked Amazon to disclose the data it collected on him as a consumer.

The company gathers a vast array of information on its U.S. customers, and it started making that data available to all upon request early last year, after trying and failing to defeat a 2018 California measure requiring such disclosures. (U.S. Amazon customers can obtain their data by filling out a form on

Seven Reuters reporters also obtained their Amazon files. The data reveals the company’s ability to amass strikingly intimate portraits of individual consumers.

Amazon collects data on consumers through its Alexa voice assistant, its e-commerce marketplace, Kindle e-readers, Audible audiobooks, its video and music platforms, home-security cameras and fitness trackers. Alexa-enabled devices make recordings inside people’s homes, and Ring security cameras capture every visitor.

Such information can reveal a person’s height, weight and health; their ethnicity (via clues contained in voice data) and political leanings; their reading and buying habits; their whereabouts on any given day, and sometimes whom they have met.

One reporter’s dossier revealed that Amazon had collected more than 90,000 Alexa recordings of family members between December 2017 and June 2021 amazon deleted my order history averaging about 70 daily. The recordings included details such as the names of the reporter’s young children and their favorite songs.

Amazon captured the children asking how they could convince their parents to let them “play,” and getting detailed instructions from Alexa on how to convince their parents to buy them video games. Be fully prepared, Alexa advised the kids, to refute common parent arguments such as “too violent,” “too expensive” and “you’re not doing well enough in school.” The information came from a third-party program used by Alexa called “wikiHow” that provides how-to advice from more than 180,000 articles, according to Amazon’s website.

Amazon said it does not own wikiHow, but that Alexa sometimes responds to requests with information from websites.

Some recordings involved conversations between family members using Alexa devices to communicate across different parts of the house. Several recordings captured children apologizing to their parents after being disciplined. Others picked up the children, ages 7, 9 and 12, asking Alexa questions about terms like “pansexual.”

In one recording, a child asks: “Alexa, what is a vagina?” In another: “Alexa, what does bondage mean?”

The reporter did not realize Amazon was storing the recordings before the company disclosed the data it tracked on the family.

Amazon says its Alexa products are designed to record as little as possible, starting with the trigger word, “Alexa,” and stopping when the user’s command ends. The recordings of the reporter’s family, however, sometimes captured longer conversations.

In a statement, Amazon said it has scientists and engineers working to improve the technology and avoid false triggers that prompt recording. The company said it alerts customers that recordings are stored when they set up Alexa accounts.

Amazon said it collects personal data to improve products and services and customize them to individuals. Asked about the records of Samirah listening to the Quran on Amazon’s audiobooks service, Amazon said such data allows customers to pick up where they left off from a prior session.

The only way for customers to delete much of this personal data is to close their account, Amazon said. The company said it retains some information, such as purchase history, after account closure to comply with legal obligations.

Amazon said it allows customers to adjust their settings on voice assistants and other services to limit the amount of data collected. Alexa users, for instance, can stop Amazon from saving their recordings or have them automatically deleted periodically. And they can disconnect their contacts or calendars from their smart-speaker devices if they don’t want to use Alexa’s calling or scheduling functions.

A customer can opt out of having their Alexa recordings examined, but they must navigate a series of menus and two warnings that say: “If you turn this off, voice recognition and new features may not work well for you.” Asked about the warnings, Amazon said consumers who limit data collection may not be able to personalize some features, such as music playback.

Samirah, 30, got an Amazon Alexa-enabled smart speaker during last amazon deleted my order history holiday season. He said he only used it for three days before returning it after realizing it was collecting recordings. “It really sketched me out,” he said.

The device had already gathered all of his phone contacts, part of a feature that allows users to make calls through the device. Amazon said Alexa users must give permission for the company to access phone contacts. Customers must disable access to phone contacts, not just delete the Alexa app, in order to delete the records from their Amazon account.

Samirah said he was also unnerved that Amazon had detailed records of his audiobook and Kindle reading sessions. Finding information about his listening to the Quran disclosed in his Amazon file, he said, made Samirah think about the history of U.S. police and intelligence agencies surveilling Muslims for suspected terrorist links after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

“Why do they need to know that?” he asked. Samirah’s term ends in January, after he lost a bid for re-election earlier this year.

At times, law-enforcement agencies seek data on customers from technology companies. Amazon discloses that it complies with search warrants and other lawful court orders seeking data the company keeps on an account, while objecting to “overbroad or otherwise inappropriate requests.”

Amazon data for the three years ending in June 2020, the latest available, show the company complied at least partially with 75% of subpoenas, search warrants and other court orders seeking data on U.S. customers. The company fully complied with 38% of those requests.

Amazon stopped disclosing how often it complies with such requests last year. Asked why, Amazon said it expanded the scope of the U.S. report to make it global, and “streamlined” the information from each country on law enforcement inquiries.

The company said it is obligated to comply with “valid and binding orders,” but that its goal is to release “the minimum” required by law.

Amazon’s 3,500-word privacy policy, which links to more than 20 other pages related to privacy and user settings, gives the company wide latitude to collect data. Amazon said the policy describes its collection, use and sharing of data “in a way that is easy for consumers to understand.”

That information can get quite personal. Amazon’s Kindle e-readers, for instance, precisely track a user’s reading habits, another reporter’s Amazon data file showed. The disclosure included records of more than 3,700 reading sessions since 2017, including timestamped logs – to the millisecond – of books read. Amazon also tracks words highlighted or looked up, pages turned and promotions seen.

It showed, for instance, that a family member read “The Mitchell Sisters: A Complete Romance Series” on Aug. 8, 2020, from 4:52 p.m. until 7:36 p.m., flipping 428 pages.

Florian Schaub, a privacy researcher at the University of Michigan, said businesses are not always transparent about what they’re doing with users’ data. “We have to rely on Amazon doing the right thing,” he said, “rather than being confident the data can’t be misused.”
