You are what you watch, and by that we mean that selecting films that show you something outside your comfort zone is a great way to educate and entertain yourself. The big screen might be a hard ask right now, but you can still bring cinema home.

As such, we've put in the time and sifted through Amazon Prime Video to pick out the best films you can stream without leaving home. These include critically acclaimed movies like 1917and Almost Famous, indie gemsPalm Springs and Compliance, and foreign language masterpieces like Parasite.

If you're only using your Amazon Prime membership to expedite a crate of loo roll to your house, you're missing out.

Joker

-

Depending on exactly how much of a stomach you have for what is essentially mid-Seventies Scorsese fan fiction, you'll either find Joker a startlingly adventurous departure from the standard comic book template or a ridiculously po-faced couple of hours of portentous shallowness. Either way, you've got to admit Joaquin Phoenix is excellent in the main role, his maladjusted Travis Bickle-alike Arthur Fleck magnetic even if you aren't into the pompousness that can creep into things. But a lot of people like it! It made a billion quid! So! There you go!

Django Unchained

-

For our money, Quentin Tarantino’s last unequivocally belting film. The Hateful Eight had its moments, and the ellipsis lovers’ fave Once Upon A Time in… Hollywood had Brad, Leo and one great 25-minute story, but seven or eight fairly dull ones too. But the action-leaning neo-Western Django Unchained couples OUATIH's enjoyably hammy Comedy Leo up to an absolutely barnstorming central performance from Jamie Foxx. Foxx is Django, an enslaved man who's bought by bounty hunter Dr King Schulz (an excellent Christoph Waltz) because he's got intel on the Brittle Brothers, overseers in Django's old plantation. Soon they're tracking down Django's wife, Broomhilda, to the house of DiCaprio's moustache-twirling Calvin Candy. It's explosive, righteous, wildly entertaining stuff.

Wild Mountain Thyme

-

Right, usually we have a no spoilers policy in our film round-ups. Usually. However, Wild Mountain Thyme is not a film it's possible to really enjoy without a spoiler. It looks like a wistful, quirky Irish romance in which Jamie Dornan and Emily Blunt moon Irishly at each other over foggy, soggy moorland.

But it is not. It is a film you put on at 10pm on a Friday night after a bottle of wine and scream yourself hoarse at. It is Mamma Mia; it is the Princess Diana musical.

It is very, very silly indeed. The accents are absolutely insane. Christopher Walken pretending to be a County Mayo farmer sounds exactly like you'd think Christopher Walken County Mayo farmer would sound like. Jamie Dornan – who is Irish! – does not sound Irish. And, most of all, the drama hinges on the fact that (SPOILER ALERT) Jamie Dornan's character can't commit because he thinks he's a bee.

HE THINKS HE'S A BEE.

JAMIE DORNAN THINKS HE'S A BEE.

JAMIE DORNAN.

CAN'T GET HIS HORN ON.

BECAUSE HE THINKS.

HE'S A BEE.

The Green Knight

A24

Dev Patel’s turn as the super-serious decapitationist Sir Gawain has got a lot of acclaim, and it arrived on Amazon Prime at the same time as it did cinemas. After a challenger whose head he chopped off unexpectedly hops up from the floor and says he’ll see Gawain in a year’s time for his own swing, Gawain has to find a way to survive while maintaining his honour. David Lowery’s expansive, immersive visuals add a burning intensity to Gawain’s quest. One minor quibble: the original poet wrote in a dialect native to the Wirral, so it’s a slight shame nobody took the chance to go full medieval Scouse.

In perhaps Jack O'Connell's best role to date he stars in this action thriller about The Troubles from Top Boy director Yann Demange, the film which won him a Bafta in 2014 for direction. O'Connell plays Gary Hook, a British soldier who is separated from his unit during a riot in Belfast at the height of the Troubles in 1971. The story then tracks Hook's dangerous path through the riot alone, capturing the terrifying intensity from the streets were war was waged.

In 2010 Debra Granik cast a then-unknown Jennifer Lawrence in her chilling drama Winter's Bone, setting the young actress on the path to stardom. In her 2018 film Leave No Trace she plays star-maker again, with a breakthrough performance from young New Zealand Thomasin McKenzie, the New Zealand actress who has gone on to star in films by Taika Waititi, M. Night Shyamalan and Edgar Wright. Based on true events, the film follows a PTSD-afflicted father who lives in the woods with his daughter, eventually forced to return to society by government agents who believe they know better. A superior story of living off-grid than Captain Fantastic, and one which, like Chloé Zhao's Nomadland, asks questions about whether there is a right way to live.

The Mauritanian

The story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, the 50-year-old who was detained at Guantanamo Bay for 14 years without being charged with a crime, is dramatised in this slow-burning movie featuring a breakthrough role from The Serpent's Tahar Rahim, as well as performances from Benedict Cumberbatch and Jodie Foster. While it might be the kind of hardboiled drama which isn't as successful at the Oscars these days, it's still a fascinating, and troublingly relevant, story.

Sound of Metal

What does deafness sound like? This is the complicated and moving question at the heart of this film about a drummer whose tinnitus causes him to suddenly lose his hearing; overnight cutting him off from both his music and his girlfriend. Riz Ahmed gives a career-best performance as the lead character, and there's also an excellent, Oscar-nominated appearance from Paul Raci, a journeyman actor who grew up the child of deaf adults. Sound of Metal is a reminder that deafness is not something that needs to be fixed, showing that listening to someone is about more than hearing them.

Call Me By Your Name

Director Luca Guadagnino transports you to the Italian countryside in this simmering love story about Elio (Timothée Chalamet), a teenager spending the summer with his parents, playing the piano and cycling around town by day and dancing with friends at night. When a graduate, Oliver (Armie Hammer), comes to assist his father in his work, a friendship between them blooms into something else under the scorching sun, with stolen glances over the dinner table and afternoons hiding from everyone else. The role which saw Chalamet become the youngest actor nominated at the Oscars in 80 years, Andre Aciman's beautiful novel becomes an unforgettable love story in this adaptation.

No, not the one about a war between liberal elites and rightwing nutters – instead this 2012 film sees Mads Mikkelsen play a schoolteacher whose world is rocked when a student of his claims she witnessed him engage in a lewd act. From danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg – the director of Another Round, for which Mikkelsen is currently nominated for an Oscar – this slow-burning drama is a compelling character study anchored by a performance from one of cinema's most versatile actors.

Two years before Brie Larson took home the Oscar for her role in Room, the actress gave a commanding lead performance as a counsellor to at-risk teenagers at a group home in California in Short Term 12. Written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film is adapted from his short of the same name which followed one day in a care unit, based on his experience at a facility. The film shows how tensions rise amongst the teenagers and Larson's Grace begins to unravel as she is reminded of her own past. There's also a strong performance from LaKeith Stanfield in this multiple award winner.

David Fincher's 2014 thriller, based on Gillian Flynn's best-selling novel of the same name, is both a visual feast for cinephiles and a gripping blockbuster that will suck you in. The story concerns the disappearance of Amy Dunne and how her husband Nick is blamed for the murder, in a film with brilliantly hairpin twists and turns, and two excellent performances from Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.

Fyre Festival, Anna Delvey, the impossibility of cancelling a free trial – the age of the scammer is truly upon us, and this Rosamund Pike-fronted drama will scratch just that itch. The crime drama follows a woman who tricks elderly people into appointing her as their legal guardian before making off with their money. The enterprise comes unstuck when she targets a victim who has ties to a gangster, played by the wry Peter Dinklage. What appears a slick drama ends up making salient points about our obsession with wealth and hustling.

Heat might not have been recognised at the Oscars of its day, but the 25 years since its release have seen Michael Mann's crime thriller cemented as the classic of the genre. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are a formidable pair in this story of a detective trying to catch a seasoned criminal pulling his very last heist. Mann spent nine months shadowing an LAPD officer every Friday and Saturday night in the run up to Heat, responding to calls across the city to get a taste of what the crime there really looked like. The result is a film which exploits every hidden corner of the city in a relentless game of cat and mouse, with what we'd wager is the best telephone scene in cinema history.

Parasite

It is no understatement to say that Bong Joon Ho's satirical horror, and masterpiece of class warfare, is the best film of 2020. Winning the Korean auteur four Academy Awards, and in doing so becoming the first foreign-language film to win the 'Best Picture' Oscar, it's hard to overstate its impact. As well as being an important dissection of privilege and the precarious nature of modern life, it is also hugely entertaining for the farcical story, which just keeps ramping up. If you haven't yet seen it, it's best to go in uninformed, but the story follows two families living in South Korea – one rich, one poor – and slowly shows us the folks at the bottom invading the beautiful, sprawling home of their wealthy compatriots. Parasite is a film with such bite it leaves you feeling wounded for days.

The all-star British cast includes names such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Mark Strong, Colin Firth and Andrew Scott, and the film is shot by revered cinematographer Roger Deakins – the Oscar-winner behind Sicario and Blade Runner 2049 – who here conjures harrowing and breathtaking visuals.

A fictional account of a real night in history, One Night in Miami imagines the conversations which took place behind closed doors when Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown met in a hotel room after Ali's win against Sonny Liston in 1964. Adapted by Kemp Powers from his play of the same name, and directed by Regina King, the film creates a four-way verbal boxing match between the men as they discuss activism, art and politics and the burden on famous Black men to speak up against injustices. Powers's story taps into the lesser-known, more private aspects of these infamous men's personalities, tackling some of the myth and in doing so showing us more of the men behind them. A gorgeously shot and slow burning drama which draws an unfortunate line from the civil rights movement to our polarised present day.

John Le Carré was the anti-Ian Fleming, an author whose spy stories revelled in the minutiae of espionage and the toll the job takes on those who chose to pursue it. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy might not be his best novel – that's The Spy Who Came in From the Cold – but this is arguably the best version of any of his books ever filmed, a slow-burning thriller that ratchets up the tension as retired spook George Smiley (Gary Oldman) hunts a mole at the top of British Intelligence.

When a video of the incident goes viral, the protagonists become symbols of the grief and pain people have suffered at the hands of the police. Both Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya, and his on-screen partner Jodie Turner-Smith, give remarkable performances in this story about police brutality and a divided America that is most devastating in its quietest moments. Released before the death of George Floyd at the hands of American police officers sparked protests around the world, Queen & Slim is a fictional story yet one which feels symbolic of all of the people whose names should not be forgotten.

Michael Winterbottom's film manages to conjure the full madness of Factory Record's semi-mythic journey from grotty punk club night to the very heart of everything that mattered in youth culture in a way no mass of BBC4 talking heads ever could. Steve Coogan plays prime mover Tony Wilson, who narrates the whole trajectory, while a ludicrously strong ensemble, including John Simm, Shirley Henderson, Paddy Considine and Andy Serkis, bring life to the gigantic characters around the label. In a meta twist, real Hacienda and Factory figures like Dave Haslam, Dave Pickering, Howard Devoto and Tony Wilson himself pop up too. But it absolutely is a fascinating piece of film history. In the UK this Italian exploitation horror is known as one of the original 'video nasties', unrated and unregulated VHS tapes which sparked a moral panic in the early Eighties. In terms of pure gore you've probably seen worse, but the found footage thing is smartly done and would be picked up and run with by another word-of-mouth sensation 20 years later: The Blair Witch Project.

I'm a part-time Amazon delivery driver. Here's how we cheat to get around the strict rules and constant monitoring.

  • Jay (not his real name) has worked as a part-time driver for Amazon in Michigan since 2019.
  • He says to avoid getting penalized by Amazon's tracking app drivers trade phones sometimes.
  • He says it's "frustrating" being monitored. This is his story, as told to freelancer Jenny Powers.

This as-told-to essay comes from a conversation with Jay (not his real name), a part-time driver delivering packages for Amazon in rural Michigan since 2019. He spoke anonymously out of concern for losing his position; his identity has been verified by Insider. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I started working part time as a driver for Amazon in 2019 after seeing an online classified ad. I enjoy travel and figured I could use a few extra bucks, so I applied.

My starting pay was $16 an hour. For my one-year anniversary, I got an increase of $0.25 an hour. Recently, drivers received a COVID-19 bonus — part-timers like me received $150.

It's no secret that Amazon contracts the bulk of their deliveries through third-party delivery service providers (DSPs), so while I exclusively deliver Amazon packages and wear branded clothing with their logo on it, I don't actually work for Amazon.

I like the DSP I work for and I'm thankful for the job, but Amazon's constant need to implement new rules is frustrating and has resulted in a lot of turnover at my workplace.

Read more: Big firms are popping up to buy third-party Amazon sellers, who made up more than half of the retail giant's $386 billion in net sales in 2020. Here are the biggest players in this fast-growing trend.

There are around 25 to 30 full-time drivers, and usually the same number of weekend drivers floating around. This is partly due to the higher turnover of part-timers. My best estimate is there are 30 to 40 new drivers since last year.

It's like a never-ending revolving door where every time I come in, there's a new face.

Amazon preaches safety, safety, safety, and while that's a great narrative for the media, behind the scenes it's another story.

There's a lot of pressure on the DSPs to perform well otherwise they risk getting their contract pulled, and this pressure winds up trickling down to us drivers.

In the name of safety, Amazon keeps tabs on us by tracking everything, but what it really does is create more pressure.

They monitor everything — from whether we're wearing our seat belts to acceleration, braking, cornering, reversing, and even things like touching our screens while in motion through an app called Mentor.

The app can either be downloaded on our mobile phones or a phone provided by our DSP, which is what I opted for because I don't like the idea of having a tracker on my personal phone.

At the end of each shift, which is typically between nine and 11 hours long, the app generates a score based on how well we drove. The highest score is 850.

When I started nearly two years ago, if you got a 550 you were fine, but not anymore. Now they want you to be in the high 700's.

I used to have a 550, but now I'm more like a 750, which is basically the lowest score Amazon will allow without the DSP getting into trouble.

The problem is your score can take a hit for things completely out of your control.

For instance, if a kid runs into the street chasing their soccer ball and you're forced to hit the brakes unexpectedly, that goes against your score. If a deer darts out in front of your van and you swerve to avoid an accident, that goes against your score, too. If you're driving and your GPS suddenly goes down and you touch the screen to get back on track — boom, that's another infraction. What else are we supposed to do in these situations?

I've never been in an accident, but these types of instances can drag a driver's score down, and the bottom line is everything comes down to your score.

My DSP doesn't want to jeopardize their business, so we've created a workaround to game the system.

If a driver's scores start to suffer, our supervisor will tell us to log into the app at the beginning of our shift and then hand our phone over to a driver who typically scores high to take it out on their route. Problem solved.

I drive a rental van as opposed to an official Amazon vehicle, which I prefer because those can't go over 70 MPH, not that I speed on anything.

If I'm told I have to get a camera in my van, I can tell you I probably won't continue to work there. I don't need to be under constant surveillance all day, even if it's under the guise of safety.

From the moment we arrive at work, we've got to get our hustle on.

Once we arrive at the lot, we have to personally conduct a 60-point check on our vehicles before we get assigned to our routes, issued packets, and sent out in waves to our hub to pick up our packages. Some examples of things we need to check each shift are whether our wiper fluid is topped off, is our vehicle missing a gas cap, does our reverse camera work, and our tires for balding, pressure, and tread depth.

The hub is like a giant bee's nest with everyone weaving in and out because we need to scan every package before loading our vehicle. Then we've got to move fast to ensure we can actually deliver everything on our route by 10 p.m. which is Amazon's requirement.

I average about 150 packages and 130 stops per shift and about 30% to 40% more between peak season, which runs from October through December. During the peak, Amazon gives part-time drivers like me a $150 season bonus.

I've got a rural route most of the time, so the last thing I want is to be out here on some country road with no street lights delivering packages after dark.

We do get electronic notifications to take two 15-minute breaks during our shifts and a lunch break, but I always dismiss the notices and just eat while I'm driving — which is a no-no, but it's really the only way to get the job done on time and not have to return any undelivered packages back to the hub.

The DSP gets penalized for returning packages, although I don't know what the threshold is. I'm sure there's an allowance built in for this as it's just not safe to leave packages at some addresses, but my guess is the DSP gets penalized if too many are brought back.

I'm not proud to admit it, but I've peed in a bottle to save time on my route.

It's partly by choice, part necessity. Working on these country routes, it can sometimes take as long as 20 minutes for me to find a fast-food restaurant or gas station, and I just don't have that kind of time.

If there are four miles between houses and no one's around, I might be able to pee on a country road, but more often than not, it's a bottle in the van.

I rarely had to do this when I worked for UPS because they do so many commercial deliveries — I was always relatively close to a business where I could use the facilities.

Even on the days I do manage to finish early, it's almost a guarantee I'll get sent back out to help a driver on another route, which isn't ideal because all I want to do is get home at that point.

There's been a lot of talk about unionizing lately but personally, I'm not a big fan of unions.

I feel like in the 1940s-50s they were beneficial, but now it's just a big, greedy power grab.

When I worked as a temp driver at UPS, I wasn't eligible for any benefits due to my part-time status, but I was still required to pay union dues.

One of the biggest issues between Amazon and its drivers is that the people making all the rules are sitting inside offices and not behind the wheel.

So more often than not, the rules being implemented are counterintuitive to what it actually takes to do our job safely and efficiently.

Amazon prides itself on getting driver safety under control, but then puts demands in place that force us to circumvent the system.

In a statement to Insider, an Amazon spokesperson said: We support drivers taking the time they need to take breaks in between stops and provide a list within the Amazon Delivery app to see nearby restroom facilities and gas stations. Drivers have built-in time on their route to take breaks and use the restroom. In fact, the app alerts them when it's time for a break. We work closely with DSPs to set realistic expectations that do not place undue pressure on them or their drivers. We use sophisticated technology that plans routes to be completed within a specified time, taking into account numerous factors such as package volume, address complexity, and appropriate time for breaks. In fact, more than 75% of drivers complete their routes under the planned time by 30 minutes or more. Whether it's state-of-the art safety technology in our vans, driver-safety training programs, or continuous improvements within our mapping and routing technology, we have invested tens of millions of dollars in safety mechanisms across our network, and regularly communicate safety best practices to drivers.

LuzRivas remembers seeing the word on her mother’s residency card as a child: “alien.”

In the stark terms of the government, it signaled her mother was not yet a citizen of the U.S. But to her young daughter, the word had a more personal meaning. Even though they were going through the naturalization process, it meant the family did not belong.

“I want other children of immigrants, like me, to not feel the same way I did, that my family did, when we saw the word ‘alien’,” said Rivas, now an assemblywoman in the California Legislature.

The Democratic lawmaker sought to retire the term and this year authored a bill — since signed into law — that replaces the use of “alien” in state statutes with other terms such as “noncitizen” or “immigrant.” Her effort was inspired by a similar shift earlier this year by the JoeBiden administration.

Immigrants and immigrant-rights groups say the term, especially when combined with “illegal,” is dehumanizing and can have a harmful effect on immigration policy.

The word became a focal point of debate in several states earlier this year as the number of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border swelled and led to fierce backlash against Biden administration policies by Republican governors and lawmakers.

Lawmakers in at least seven states considered eliminating use of “alien” and “illegal” in state statutes this year and replacing them with descriptions such as “undocumented” and “noncitizen,” according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Only two states, California and Colorado, actually made the change.

“I want all Californians that are contributing to our society, that are small business owners, that work hard, to feel that they are part of California communities,” Rivas said of the reason behind her legislation.

State Sen. JulieGonzales, who co-sponsored the new Colorado law, said during a legislative committee hearing that words such as “illegal” were “dehumanizing and derogatory” when applied to immigrants. Gonzales said the legislation aimed to remove the only place in Colorado statute where “illegal alien” was used to describe people living in the U.S. illegally.

“That language has been offensive for many people,” she said. “And some of the rationale behind that is really rooted in this idea that a person can certainly commit an illegal act, but no human being themselves is illegal.”

Using “alien” to describe those who are not U.S. citizens has a long history, dating to the nation’s first naturalization law, passed while George Washington was president. Fearing a war with France, Congress also passed the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798, which sought to suppress political subversion.

Changing the long-standing government terminology around immigration is not universally accepted as necessary or desirable.

SageNaumann, spokesperson for the Colorado Senate Republicans, said the Democratic-controlled Legislature should be spending its time on matters of deeper importance to residents, such as taking steps to fight inflation, tackle crime and improve education.

Naumann said he doubted that “the average Coloradan — or American — cares about what semi-controversial words are buried in their state statutes.”

The Biden administration also received some pushback after its change in policy.

In April, U.S. Customs and Border Protection ordered employees to avoid using the word “alien” in internal documents and public communications and instead use “noncitizen” or “migrant.” “Illegal alien” also was out, to be replaced by descriptions such as “undocumented noncitizen.”

“We enforce our nation’s laws while also maintaining the dignity of every individual with whom we interact,” TroyMiller, acting commissioner, wrote to employees of the largest U.S. law enforcement agency, which includes the Border Patrol. “The words we use matter and will serve to further confer that dignity to those in our custody.”

Border Patrol Chief RodneyScott objected, writing to others in the agency that the edict contradicted language in criminal statutes — although Miller made an exception for legal documents — and plunged the agency into a partisan debate. Scott, a Trump-era appointee, refused to sign off on the order and believes his outspokenness on that and other issues contributed to him being forced out of his position in June.

“To change the law is fine, but until then you’re really politicizing the mission,” Scott said in an interview.

An analysis by The Associated Press (which doesn’t refer to people as “aliens” except in direct quotes) found that more than a dozen states still use the terms “alien” or “illegal” in statutes referring to immigrants. Among them is Texas, where a legislative attempt to transition to different terminology advanced out of committee with bipartisan backing this year but failed to get a hearing before the full Texas House.

State Rep. ArtFierro, a Democrat, said he expected “kickback” when he originally proposed the change. But following committee discussions, he said that to his surprise the change was seen by both parties as an effort to use more “dignified, respectful” terms. He said he suggested the change because he felt the original terms were belittling to those seeking to work through the immigration process.

Fierro said he plans to introduce another bill to replace the terms during the state’s next regular legislative session, in 2023.

“We are just trying to treat people humanely,” he said.

RosalidiaDardon knows from personal experience why the language surrounding immigration is so important.

After fleeing violence in El Salvador, she spent roughly 16 months in an immigration detention center in California before arriving at a refugee home in Texas in 2016. She was determined to find a job while she sought asylum but had lost her work visa after her protected status expired.

Dardon, 54, blames the ankle monitor she was required to wear and the description of immigrants with terms such as “illegal” for a job search marked by rejection after rejection.

One specific moment remains frozen in her memory.

“I won’t give you a job because you are a criminal,” Dardon told the AP in Spanish, repeating what a hiring manager in Texas said to her.

“I would ask myself and God why I was given an ankle monitor if my only sin was to go to a country that was not my own,” said Dardon, whose immigration case remains pending. “Without Latinos, this country would spiral downwards. That’s why we should be treated better.”
