the plot against america amazon

Imagining an alternate American history during World War II, this series is told through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in New Jersey as they endure. Most striking is how subtly The Plot Against America unspools its alternate history. This is not Amazon Studios' The Man in the High Castle. Disturbing dystopia has violence, cursing, mature themes. HBO's Philip Roth Adaptation The Plot Against America Is Essential Viewing for All Americans

In a relatively lighthearted scene from HBO’s The Plot Against America, Rabbi Lionel Bengelsdorf explains to Evelyn Finkel the difference between two sacred Hebrew texts. “The Mishnah is the original oral law of the Jews as collected,” Bengelsdorf (John Turturro) says. “And the Talmud is volumes and volumes of rabbis and sages arguing about it.” Evelyn, a fragile woman played by Winona Ryder, smirks wryly. “Well, we do like to argue,” she admits. This, in my experience, is one of those pesky stereotypes with a basis in fact. Arguing isn’t just normal for Jews—it’s how we show affection. How could you possibly love someone if you don’t care enough to raise your voice in objection to their politics, their life choices, their poor manners?

It makes sense, then, that argument is the primary mode of conversation in The Plot Against America, debuting March 16, an incisive six-episode series adapted from the 2004 Philip Roth novel that imagines an alternate history in which legendary aviator and America First mouthpiece Charles Lindbergh defeats Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1940 election. At the center of this saga from The Wire and The Deuce creator David Simon and his frequent collaborator Ed Burns are the Levins, a working-class Jewish family in Newark, NJ. Occupying two floors of a shared house, insurance agent Herman (Homeland’s Morgan Spector) and his wife Bess (Zoe Kazan) preside over a clan that includes their two sons, artistic teen Sandy (Caleb Malis) and sensitive 10-year-old Philip (Azhy Robertson from Marriage Story); Herman’s orphaned, angry-young-man nephew Alvin (Anthony Boyle); and Evelyn, Bess’ older sister, whose life has been stymied by an obligation to care for their sick mother. Though they share blood, culture and heritage, each character reacts in a different way to Lindbergh’s ascent. And it’s their passionate debates, more than any sensational turn of events, that give the slow, deliberate show its resonance.

When we meet the Levins, in the summer of 1940, Lindbergh is launching his last-minute campaign on an isolationist platform that is nominally anti-war but transparently sympathetic to the Third Reich. He calls out Jews as war agitators—and as a bonafide American hero, he gets away with it. Though the Levins’ largely Jewish neighborhood remains a safe haven, anti-Semitism festers nearby. Herman turns down a promotion that might’ve bought the family a house after they’re harassed in what would’ve been their new hometown by German-Americans at a beer garden. An armchair leftist who follows the war in Europe via newsreels and listens to Walter Winchell on the radio, he sees right through Lindbergh and the “fascist bastards” who back him. The chronically insubordinate Alvin takes a more militant approach. “I’m tired of turning my cheek,” he declares, and sets about jumping drunk white supremacists with a crew of Jewish vigilantes.

But not everyone senses the threat. After the collapse of her affair with a married Italian man Evelyn meets Bengelsdorf, a smug rabbi from South Carolina with the accent and manner of an archetypal Southern Baptist preacher, who has been stumping for Lindbergh. (Amid so many naturalistic performances, Turturro’s operatic weirdness both sells his character’s unlikely take on current events and provides some comic relief.) “I explained to him that our people are committed irrevocably to America,” he assures her during a fancy dinner date. “Though Ireland still matters to the Irish and Poland to the Poles, Jews retain no allegiance, sentimental or otherwise, to those Old World countries where we were never really welcome. And from that meeting going forward, Lindbergh has not said anything derogatory about our people.”

John Turturro and Winona Ryder in 'The Plot Against America'

Bengelsdorf’s mistake is assuming the candidate targeted Jews out of ignorance, not malice. After the election, Lindbergh taps the rabbi and Evelyn—now a true believer in the President—to head the new Office of American Absorption, whose project “Just Folks” sends Jewish boys to stay with Christian farm families in hopes of assimilating them into the country’s so-called mainstream. Sandy, who still idolizes Lindbergh, eagerly signs up for a summer in Kentucky. But Evelyn’s collaboration strains her relationship with Bess—a loving, protective homemaker who’s distraught by her husband’s insistence that the family stand their ground despite increasing anti-Semitic sentiment. She wants to move to Canada like some of their friends.

The show isn’t filtered through Philip’s perspective to the same extent as the book is; Simon and Burns are wise to avoid the clichés of voiceover narration. But in its depiction of the way anxiety and confusion slowly extinguish his innocence, The Plot Against America registers the devastating effects of hatred and violence on a formerly carefree child. Not even a teenager yet, he learns the hard way that his selfish decisions can have unintentionally disastrous outcomes.

Simon is TV’s master of realism, and here the groundedness of his storytelling combines with the distinctiveness of Roth’s characters to deepen the political profundity as well as the visceral impact of this speculative fiction. Ryder, Kazan, Turturro and Spector are all spectacularly alive in roles that require them to give fiery speeches and have emotional breakdowns without appearing rehearsed. Everyone’s point of view is comprehensible, if not necessarily sympathetic. The look of the show is haunting in its familiarity. Pale golden light suffuses each scene, evoking nostalgia for Norman-Rockwell-era America even as we watch Lindbergh’s administration attack the inclusive principles that had brought so many immigrants to its shores.

Yes, the show is “relevant” now, like every recent TV series that reckons with bigotry and authoritarianism, from HBO’s brilliant Watchmen to Amazon’s awful Hunters. Yet to obsess over the timeliness of its white-supremacist villains is to minimize the universality of its psychological portraiture. (Take the story literally, and you may also be frustrated by its lack of interest in other American minorities and how blithely it ignores the fact that Japanese internment doesn’t diverge much from what it frames as a nightmare.) By tracing the disagreements that divide the Levins—and often paralyze them in moments of crisis—over the course of two years, it demonstrates how a threat too huge and insidious to wrap one’s mind around can creep into lives that are already overstuffed with school, work, family, romance, money troubles, career aspirations, partisan allegiances. They become a microcosm for a society where even those who aren’t motivated by hate can do monstrous things to their neighbors out of fear, foolishness or self-interest—where being outraged and paying attention are only half the battle.

The Plot Against America season 1, episode 1 recap – “Part 1”

Summary

“Normalcy” comes under question in a thoughtful first episode of The Plot Against America.

This recap of The Plot Against America Season 1, Episode 1, “Part 1”, contains spoilers.

What is normal? It’s a question many Americans were faced with in 2016 when progressive figureheads urged everyone to remember that “this is not normal.” The statement rests in an implicit understanding that for everyone, what had been happening up until then was normal, to which the Trump presidency was an aberration.

But “normal” is subjective, and often portrays a sense of privilege, or acceptance with how things are, despite the flaws of the world around you. Normal lies in a state of bliss. Sometimes we can become easily adjusted to comfort, that we mistake this brief period of well-being, for “normal.”

For American Jews, normalcy is always precarious. Ascendancy into the middle class has always been precarious. The twentieth century was a period where America opened itself up to Jews; we became white, and middle class. And for some, it was easy to forget that this “normal” was not the way things always were.

The Plot Against America Episode 1 spends much of its running time showing us what “normal” means to the Roth family of Weequahic New Jersey. The Wire creators David Simon and Ed Burn’s adaption of Philip Roth’s novel tells the story of the rise of racism in the United States through the eyes of a middle-class Jewish family. The trick of this first episode is in narrowing its focus on the Roths; how these changes affect their life, their idea of “normal.”

Minkie Spiro’s direction re-creates 1940s New Jersey with lived-in detail. She interweaves the personal with the political through the frequent depiction of the media; headlines, newsreel, and radio. Outside the house, the neighborhood gathers to discuss the events of the day.

Through film, radio, and gossip, we hear the words of Charles Lindbergh. The famed pilot, already a national figure, amasses a political following. His words are gut-wrenching; we hear a crowd cheer as he blames Jews for wanting to take the US into World War Two. “The choice… is between Lindbergh and war.”

To Herman Roth (Morgan Spector), middle-class Jew and FDR Democrat, Lindbergh’s pronouncements are outrageous. He is making enough money to be able to move out of Weequahic, into a bigger house. But moving up in the world also means moving out of the safety of the Jewish community.

To his wife, Bess (Zoe Kazan), the prospect is less than thrilling. As they drive past a gathering of beer-drinking Germans, she is reminded of her youth, where her home was known as “the Jew house.” Through the microcosm of the Roth’s marriage, Simon and Burns’ script navigates the plurality of Jewish-American experiences.

Bess is comfortable with their current neighborhood, which Spiro shoots with warmth and tenderness that allows the viewer to feel the homeliness the Roth’s feel. The streets and homes of Weequahic are laced with a nostalgic feeling as if this was once the American dream we could all aspire to live in. They feel safe here.

For young Philip, this is all he knows (the book is told through his eyes, but the series makes the wise choice to expand outward). When a Hasidic man appears at the door to raise funds for European Jews needing refuge in “the homeland,” Philip asks his dad what that means. Herman explains things in Europe are tough. But the Roth’s do not need another home. The subtext is not subtle, but sets the tone for the rest of The Plot Against America Episode 1: their “home,” “normalcy,” is less secure than they think.

Philip shares a room with his elder brother Sandy, a promising young artist who resents their living situation, refusing to answer the endless questions that Philip asks.

Bess’s sister, Evelyn (Winona Ryder), lives with their mother. She disbands a disappointing affair (with an Italian!) and resigns herself to spinsterdom before being introduced to the charming Rabbi Lionel Bengelsdorf (an always-welcome John Turturro, who I’m sure I’ll talk about more in the coming episodes).

Meanwhile, hotheaded cousin Alvin has been fired from his job at a gas station for stealing (a charge he vehemently denies). Later, he avenges a friend by beating up some proto-nazis, a move that is sure to have serious consequences.

In the most brazen directorial choice of The Plot Against America Episode 1, the aforementioned beating occurs in tandem with Herman watching a newsreel of Lindbergh’s speech. The punches are intercut with Lindy’s rhetoric. The message could not be more clear: political rhetoric and real-world violence are intertwined.

Hi folks! Thanks for reading. I’m really excited to be recapping this series, it’s one that I’ve been anticipating for a while, both because of my reverence for David Simon’s work and my fascination with Philip Roth (my college senior thesis was on American Pastoral). I’m thrilled to finally have a good Roth adaptation, and I’m delighted its one that makes such a concerted effort to delve into the thorny territory of Jewish assimilation (a major theme in Roth’s work). I will do my best not to reveal any plot details (no pun intended) that have not happened in the show yet, so you can keep reading along without reading it, but the book is an excellent read!

On the radio we hear a thunderous speech from American icon Charles Lindbergh, whom the Republicans have recruited to run for president against Roosevelt and whose views are outright anti-semitic and pro-Nazi, much to the dismay of Herman. Couple of comments: this mini-series is the work from Ed Burns and David Simon, who brought us the acclaimed "The Wire". Here they bring the 2004 Philip Roth novel of the same name to the screen. I have not read the novel and hence I don't know how closely the mini-series sticks to the book. Surely the overall basic premise is the same: an alternative history of the US, in which an anti-semite/pro-Nazi candidate runs for president and wins. Of course there have been similarly themed shows before, as "The Man In the High Castle" immediately comes to mind (in which the Nazis win WWII and how that plays out in the US). This opening episode is setting the table of how all of it will play out, and does so quite effectively. After hearing Lindbergh's insidious speech, he laments "Win or lose, there's a lot of hate out there, and he knows how to tap the plot against america amazon it". You don't need to be a genius to see how this perfectly fits into the current political climate, and that is the strength of the opening episode: is builds up gradually and it makes you worry, and worry a lot. As to the production value: it is clear that money was not an obstacle as this is an eye-pleasing production from start to finish (I mean, how many cars from that era can you put in a single the plot against america amazon. The cast is tops, and it wasn't until the episode's end credits rolled that I realized that Evelyn is played by none other than Winona Ryder!

"The Plot Against America" premiered this week on HBO and is now available on HBO On Demand and other streaming services. New episodes air on Monday evenings 9 pm. I personally can't wait to see how all of this will play out. If you have an interest in "what if" stories on a grand (and political) scale, I'd readily suggest you check this out and draw your own conclusion.

*UPDATE 3/23/20* Just saw the second episode, reminding us we are now in the plot against america amazon, 1940". Things are building up and at the end of the episode, Lindbergh is elected the new president, which is not a spoiler, as it is the entire premise of the TV series. Now things are going to get wild. Can't wait to see the remaining 4 episodes!

*UPDATE 4/20/20* I've now seen all episodes, and this played out nicely. Obviously I'm not going to spoil anything. But I will say this: as the episodes come and go, it is clear how this story also very relevant for what is going on in Washington today. And the last 5 minutes of the last episode are just depressing. I also came to appreciate Zoe Kazan (granddaughter of director Eli Kazan, and playing the role of Bess in this series).

Phillip Roth’s excellent The Plot Against America was published in 2004. It’s never felt more unsettling than now, which makes it the perfect time to adapt it for the small screen. The Plot Against America is set in an alternate universe where Charles Lindbergh of the America First party runs for President against Franklin Roosevelt in 1940. “Everyone sees who he is,” one character says in the trailer, almost as though to reassure himself that an anti-Semitic man would never be elected President of the United States.

Lindbergh is elected President of the United States.

Lindberg strikes a deal with Hitler to stay out of the war, and things start to get very uncomfortable for Jews in America. When Lindbergh disappears, guess who gets the blame?

The Man in the High Castle on Amazon was crap. This looks chilling as hell, and maybe the kick in the ass this country needs ahead of the 2020 election.
