Port Everglades Welcomes Holland America's New Ship NIEUW STATENDAM

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County’s Port Everglades is welcoming Holland America Line’s newest cruise ship, Nieuw Statendam, on its maiden call to the United States. The ship arrived early this morning and its inaugural Port Everglades sailing is scheduled to depart at 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, December 19. The ship returns Sunday, December 23.

"Holland America Line has been a primary customer for Port Everglades since the mid-1930s. This winter season, we will welcome 10 Holland America cruise ships, and have the distinct honor of being the host port for the Nieuw Statendam’s official naming,” said Port Everglades Chief Executive and Port Director Steven Cernak. Neiuw Statendam will be named on February 2, 2019 at Port Everglades.

The ship sailed to Port Everglades on a transatlantic voyage from Civitavecchia, Italy, which began on December 5. The 99,902-ton vessel accommodates 2,666 guests and is the second ship in the line’s Pinnacle class. The ship features purpose-built staterooms for families and solo travelers among its 1,377 guest accommodations.

Holland America accounted for more than 11.5 percent of the total number of cruise passengers who traveled through Port Everglades in FY 2018 (October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018).

Step on-board Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam

Nieuw Statendam is Holland America Line’s second Pinnacle-class ship, similar to its sister, Koningsdam, but with a few modifications.

Built in Venice, launched in December 2018 and named in February 2019 by godmother Oprah Winfrey, the 2,666-passenger ship is aimed, the line claims, at ‘modern explorers, food lovers and music lovers’. This sums it up pretty accurately; the shore excursions are a cut above the average, the food is superb and the entertainment like nothing else at sea, filling the ship with music every night.

At 99,836 tons, Nieuw Statendam is a manageable size, stylish, light and contemporary without being intimidatingly hip.

Nieuw Statendam - Holland America Line cruise ship

The interiors were designed by Adam D. Tihany, who has worked for Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental, and Bjørn Storbraaten, veteran of many a luxury ship. Their brief was to acknowledge the line’s Dutch origins while embracing the fluid curves of musical instruments – and show off a $1.4 million contemporary art collection. As a result, the ship is full of curves; the beautiful, light-filled dining room, over two levels, is shaped like the inside of a violin, while the focus of the atrium is a seven-and-a-half ton stainless steel sculpture inspired by the strings of a harp.

Where to sleep

Cabins are smart-looking, with several touches that put Nieuw Statendam firmly into the ‘premium’ category of ships: waffle bathrobes, Elemis bath goodies (in eco-friendly re-fillable containers), a huge TV with a wide choice of video on demand, USB charging slots and in 912 of the 1,339 cabins and suites, a deep balcony with two loungers. There are 32 family cabins, accommodating up to five, with two bathrooms, and 12 cabins dedicated to solo cruisers.

Accommodation on Nieuw Statendam - Holland America

Verandah Stateroom

Suites cover a wide range of categories. Vista and Signature suites come with a concierge service, pillow menu, fresh flowers and oversized bath towels, as well as more space than a standard balcony cabin. Neptune suites and above share the exclusive Neptune Lounge, with a concierge service and all-day drinks and snacks. The vast Pinnacle Suite, meanwhile, has a gorgeous private balcony with a whirlpool.

Where to eat

The food on Nieuw Statendam is outstanding, whether you opt for the elegant main dining room or the casual Lido Market buffet, where separate food stations serve dishes from all over the world. Passengers were also raving about the hot dogs from Dive In and the freshly made pizzas from the New York Deli, overlooking the Lido pool.

Main Dining Room - Nieuw Statendam - Holland America

Main Dining Room

The speciality dining, too, is great value compared to other ships. The Asian-fusion Tamarind costs $25 and has its own sushi bar, Nami Sushi, as well as al fresco dining. Rudi’s Sel de Mer, a seafood bistro, has à la carte pricing, so you don’t feel obliged to overeat, and the fish is all fresh. It’s good value, too; a vast platter of fruits de mer, including lobster tails, costs $49 for two. The Pinnacle Grill serves Pacific Northwest-inspired steaks and seafood for $35, although you can have lunch in here for just $10, while Canaletto offers Italian classics in an informal but romantic setting in a special section of the Lido Marketplace, for $15.

Neptune and Pinnacle suite occupants, as well as a limited number of passengers willing to pay $50 per person per day, can choose to eat in Club Orange, a new concept, in a restaurant in the space occupied by the Culinary Arts Center on Koningsdam. Club Orange membership comes with all sorts of other perks, like priority tender embarkation, priority for shore excursion booking and Guest Services access and in the restaurant, a wider menu than what’s on offer in the main dining room.

What to do

There are two pools, the main Lido pool, with a retractable roof (handy for those cooler days sailing in Northern Europe) and the aft Sea View pool, which tends to be quieter. There’s a big hydropool in the Greenhouse Spa, which you can use if you have a treatment or buy a spa pass.

Lido Pool on-board Pinnacle Class ships with Holland America

Lido Pool

The light-filled Crow’s Nest serves as the ship’s main living room, with uninterrupted ocean views, coffee, cocktails and touch-screen displays of useful information about the ports of call. Activities take place all day, from lectures to cookery demos, basketball hoops on the sports court and flower-arranging classes, while there are kids’ clubs for up to age 17.

BLEND - Wine venue on-board Nieuw Statendam

Blend

For something different, you can have a go at creating your own wine in Blend, run by Washington State winery Chateau Ste Michelle, for $79 per person or $99 per couple.

Nieuw Statendam’s contemporary art collection is extraordinary and art fans should treat it as they would a top gallery in port; you’ll need a good half day to see everything on one of the self-guided art tours. The gallery on board, ArtLink is refreshing, too; while many ships continue the tradition of tacky art auctions, ArtLink sells affordable work by up-and-coming artists based in the destinations the ship visits.

What I liked

Nieuw Statendam’s big ‘wow’ is its live music. The heart of the ship is the Music Walk, with everything from classical to blues to rock. Partnerships with big brands ashore means the performers are world-class, not least the classical musicians from New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts who play early evening.

Billboard Show on-board Holland America Pinnacle Class

Billboard Show

There’s an outpost of the BB King’s Blues Club, with a fantastic seven-piece band, and enthusiastic singalongs to duelling pianos in the Billboard Onboard bar. New on Nieuw Statendam, and already a hit, is the Rolling Stone Rock Room, a music bar in partnership with the iconic magazine. In here, a superb band belts out rock classics late into the night.

World Stage - Nieuw Statendam

World Stage

The World Stage offers something different, as well. Instead of song-and-dance production shows, the double-height theatre, surrounded by huge LED panels, features visiting singers, musicians and magicians, using the panels to create stunning backdrops. Don’t miss the BBC Earth performances, with footage from BBC nature documentaries set to music.

Top tip

Use the handy planner that’s provided at the start of your cruise to organise what entertainment you want to see. A lot of the acts on the World Stage are special, one-off guest performers, so you don’t want to miss them. Also, treat yourself on a sea day to a private cabana. At $89, they’re good value. You’ll get luxurious loungers, towels, bathrobes, chilled water, lunch and treats like a glass of sparkling wine, chocolate-dipped strawberries and ice cream. On a port day, the price drops to $55.

To commemorate the occasion, Holland America Line held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the terminal to open embarkation, and team members greeted guests with flag-waving fanfare as they boarded the ship. Nieuw Statendam set sail on a seven-day western Caribbean itinerary that will visit Nassau, Bahamas; Ocho Rios and Port Royal, Jamaica; and Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line's private island in the Bahamas.

"Today is a great day for Holland America Line, and our team members can't wait to welcome guests on board."

Nieuw Statendam will spend from November through April in the Caribbean on cruises ranging from seven to 11 days, all roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades. ms Nieuw Statendam Review

Review of ms Nieuw Statendam

The 2018-built MS Nieuw Statendam cruise ship is the second Pinnacle-Class vessel in the Holland America fleet, with sisterships Koningsdam (2016) and Rotterdam (2021). The new Statendam is HAL's 16th vessel built by Fincantieri. Pinnacle-Class are the newest and largest liners in HAL's fleet.

The vessel (IMO number 9767106) is currently Netherlands-flagged (MMSI 244140580) and registered in Rotterdam.

History - construction and ownership

Holland America Line (HAL) is a Seattle-based cruise company owned by Carnival Corporation (shipowner). Between 1873-1989, HAL was a Dutch cargo and passenger shipping company operating regular Transatlantic crossings between Holland and the Americas. HAL was founded in 1873 as "Dutch-American Steamship Company" headquartered in Rotterdam Netherlands. In 1989, HAL was acquired by Carnival Corporation for around EUR 530 million. Among the company's assets are the Westmark hotel chain (Alaska-Yukon), Worldwide Shore Services (warehouses-logistics) and Half Moon Cay (Caribbean private island).

Holland America MS Nieuw Statendam cruise ship

The 2700-passenger ship Nieuw Statendam was scheduled for delivery in November 2018. The vessel's name (translated from Dutch as "New Statendam") was announced on May 23, 2016. It honors MS Statendam (now Vasco de Gama) - the 5th Statendam-named liner since the company's establishment. HAL's other "new" named ship is Nieuw Amsterdam (2010).

Decks and Cabins

MS Nieuw Statendam staterooms (1331 total, in 35 grades) include 164 Suites, 748 Balcony, 147 Oceanviews (including 32x Family Oceanview and 12x Studios/single cabins), 280 Inside. Most cabins as sized ~180 m2 (17 m2). Most cabin balconies are sized 50 ft2 / 5 m2. Nearly 70% of the ship's passenger accommodations have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 27. The largest accommodation is the Penthouse/Pinnacle Suite (970 ft2 / 90 m2, with terrace sized 320 ft2 / 30 m2 and fitted with an outdoor Jacuzzi).

The boat has 13 passenger decks, of which 8 are with cabins.

"Club Orange" program provides exclusive amenities to Suite passengers booked in categories Neptune and Pinnacle. Bonus perks by this program include:

  • priority services (check-in, disembarkation, tendering, dining reservations)
  • 24-hour concierge service (assistance, information, reservations)
  • exclusive dining venue (serving complimentary Pinnacle Grill breakfast and Dining Room dinner, plus exclusive dishes)
  • dedicated Concierge Desk (Guest Services and Tours)
  • room service (a la carte breakfast menu with complimentary gourmet dishes - including smoked salmon, steak and eggs)

Breakfast hours in the MDR vary but start as early as 7 am on port days and 8 am on sea days, wrapping up by 9:30 am. Breakfast fare includes bread, cereals, French toast, blueberry pancakes, corned beef hash, egg dishes and yogurt parfaits. Portions are on the smaller side, so better opt for a second pastry. Lunch in the MDR is typically limited to an hour per day (from noon to 1 pm on sea days; closed when the ship is in port for an entire day). If you see a line of guests waiting to be seated, do not be deterred as the line moves fast and the tables are plenty. Lunch fare includes sandwiches, soups, light salads, fish and heartier entrees.

Holland America MS Nieuw Statendam cruise ship

Holland America is famous for its exceptional dining experiences on every voyage, but the line’s newest ships ms Koningsdam and ms Nieuw Statendam boast even more culinary options. Dining Room is a 2-deck high restaurant featuring an airy and sophisticated ambiance, floor-ceiling windows, curved architectural pillars accentuating the high ceiling, modern glass lighting, chic furnishings (custom-made for the liner). The restaurant's centerpiece is a copper sheath surrounding the 2-story wine tower showcasing an impressive premium wine selection. On the menu are HAL's classic selections, signature dishes, regionally inspired cuisine, Culinary Council recipes from the world-renowned chefs who compose the group, including Council Chairman and Master Chef Rudi Sodamin and international chefs David Burke, Elizabeth Falkner, Jacques Torres, Jonnie Boer and Mark Best.

In addition to Dining Room Restaurant, Nieuw Statendam offers fine dining in alternative restaurants, including redesigned Lido Market (with themed food stations) new French seafood brasserie Rudi’s Sel de Mer, new suite-exclusive experience in Club Orange Restaurant; Canaletto (Italian), Tamarind (Asian) and Pinnacle Grill.

Holland America Line (HAL) is partnering with microgreen specialist Koppert Cress. The aim of the project is to grow fresh ingredients onboard the newbuilds of the line, ms Koningsdam and ms Nieuw Statendam. The Koppert Cress partnership gives guests the chance to indulge in fresh microgreens grown onboard in ship's Culinary Arts Center and enjoy a farm-to-table-style dinner menu. The ingredients are on display in a glass-enclosed growing area in the Culinary Arts Center, which also serves as a dinner venue.

The wine-blending purpose-built room BLEND by Chateau Ste. Michelle seats up to 10 guests, who can learn about, taste wine and mix up to five wines thus creating their unique wine blends.

Follows the complete list of ms Nieuw Statendam restaurants and food bars.

  • Pinnacle Grill (reservations-only seafood/steakhouse restaurant with fine wines selection; free for passengers under 12 yo). The venue transforms into “De Librije” (US$69-89) from time to time, inspired by the land-based Dutch restaurant De Librije with two Michelin stars. A wine tasting is included with the meal (four 2 oz. pours). A wine pairing is also available for an additional US$20 per person (four 5 oz. pours).
  • Rudi’s Sel De Mer is dinner-only specialty restaurant serving French seafood. In comparison to Koningsdam's original Sel De Mer (upgraded during drydock 2018), the restaurant on Nieuw Statendam is by design larger (54 seats) but retains the curving shape and walnut wood-made, accordion-like column structure. The back wall is decorated with porcelain plates, all of which are decorated with Chef Rudi’s Food Faces culinary pop art (via a partnership with Bernardaud - French porcelain masters). The food plates are arranged from classic ingredients (caviar, fruits, root vegetables, peppers, etc). In January 2018, HAL released the coffee table book "Food Faces" - available for purchase on the ship. Signature dishes in the a la carte menu include Rudi’s Seafood Tower, Fruits de Mer, Broiled Lobster Tail, Whole Dover Sole Meuniere, Clams au Beurre, Duck Cassoulet, Steak Tartare, Steak Frites, Souffle au Fromage, Salt Crust Baked Branzino. Itineraries

Initially, there were some speculations about the ship's deployment in the world's booming cruise travel destinations - Australia and Asia. However, HAL decided to operate the liner in the Caribbean and Europe, with seasonal Transatlantic repositioning cruise crossings.

MS Nieuw Statendam itinerary program is based on Caribbean roundtrips from homeport Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida) on 7-day Western Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean itineraries. Most voyages can be combined (booked together) as B2Bs (back-to-back cruises). All Caribbean itineraries visit HAL’s private island in Bahamas Half Moon Cay.

In Europe, the ship operates seasonally (during summer) Norwegian Fjords and Baltic Sea cruises (to ports in Norway, Scandinavia and Russia) leaving roundtrip from homeport Amsterdam Holland. From Amsterdam are offered some voyages to the British Isles and Iceland. The ship also operates Western Mediterranean and Greek Islands cruises leaving from homeport Civitavecchia-Rome Italy.

MS Nieuw Statendam is Holland America Line’s (HAL) second Pinnacle-class ship built by Fincantieri at Marghera shipyard, Italy. HAL is a brand owned by Carnival Corporation, one of the world’s biggest cruise operators.

The 300m-long ship is Fincantieri’s 16th vessel built for HAL, following her sister ship MS Koningsdam. The steel cutting ceremony of the ship was held in July 2016 and it was delivered in November 2018.

History of the Statendam cruise ships

Nieuw Statendam is the sixth ship to bear the name Statendam in HAL’s history, with the first one launched in 1898.

The second and the third Statendam ships were built between the 1910s and 1920s. The fourth Statendam was launched in 1957, which departed on a 110-day world cruise marking the first of its kind for Holland America Line in January 1958.

The fifth ship was launched in 1993 and served the line until 2015 before being transferred to sister cruise line P&O Cruises Australia.

Nieuw Statendam cruise ship design details

With a gross registered tonnage (grt) of 99,902t, Nieuw Statendam has the capacity to accommodate 2,666 passengers in more than 1,377 cabins.

“Nieuw Statendam is the sixth ship to bear the name Statendam in HAL’s history, with the first one launched in 1898.”

The ship’s interiors were created by hospitality designer Adam D Tihany and renowned ship architect Bjørn Storbraaten. Interiors feature all the elements of a Pinnacle-class design, including grand light-filled spaces, visual drama and interiors inspired by the fluid curves of musical instruments.

The design of many public areas on the ship was inspired by the architecture of music.

Nieuw Statendam Review

Nieuw Statendam Overview

Nieuw Statendam is the second cruise ship in Holland America Line’s Pinnacle class, following her sister ship, Koningsdam. Launched in 2018, the 2,666-passenger ship provides the same comfort as other ships in Holland America Line’s fleet with a modern flair.

Though the ship is said not to have a musical theme, music is everpresent throughout the sailing. Whether it is the three music venues that the ship boasts, or simply that decks on the ship are named after composers, music will carry you through your sailing.

Upper Decks & Pool Areas

The pools on the ship provide for a perfect place to relax. There are no waterslides or water sports, so the pool areas are relatively quiet. At the tables by the pool, Holland America Line has added a button that you can press when you need an attendant. This allows you to stay in your chair when it is time to relax, but to have a drink in your hand when you need one – quite literally at the press of a button.

As far as pools go, I found myself spending the most time at the Sea View Pool. Although the Lido Pool was quiet, the Sea View Pool was nearly silent. The pool provides ample space to swim around, and has two hot tubs on either side. With a bar to the side and lounge chairs all around deck, it is the perfect place to sit and get some sun.

The Observation deck houses Explorations Central. With a nice, bright atmosphere, Explorations Central is a great place to sit and have a cocktail while sailing. That’s not all, though. The venue is also serves as an immersion center. Whether you have questions about destinations you’re visiting, need to book or change excursions, or want to attend a lecture – this is the place to go.

Dining On Nieuw Statendam

There are many specialty restaurants aboard Nieuw Statendam. The best in our opinion? Rudi’s Sel De Mer. And that’s coming from someone who isn’t particularly fond of seafood. What set Rudi’s apart was the service, and the attention to detail. Whether it be the staff readily offering suggestions to guests based on their desires, or the staff’s intimate knowledge of seafood, including the ability to debone a fish tableside, the service exceeded expectations.

Other specialty dining restaurants were great. If I were to go on the ship again, I would avoid the Main Dining Room and stick to Rudi’s, Tamarind, Canaletto, or the Pinnacle Grill. The Main Dining Room just wasn’t up to standard. My food arrived cold twice. Others at the table didn’t seem to have a problem with their food, so I may have just been the odd one out. But my words of advice? Try out any, or all, of the specialty restaurants aboard. You won’t be disappointed.

If you can’t spring for speciality dining every night, Club Orange may be an alternate solution. There were a few benefits of the Club Orange program including a tote bag, a dedicated priority concierge line, and a bathrobe for use in the stateroom – but the best benefit of all was access to the Club Orange restaurant where guests are able to dine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Club Orange featured the same menu as the main dining room with a couple of additional options, and also included free mimosas at breakfast. At US$50/per guest, per day, Club Orange is a great option for guests who would appreciate these extras.

Entertainment Onboard

Entertainment is almost always found in the form of music. Sure, Nieuw Statendam features America’s Test Kitchen and Exploration Central, but most of what you are going to do will involve music. Shows at World Stage range in style, but feature things like stand-up comedy, dance shows, singers, and more.

The best entertainment, however, will be found within the ship’s three music venues – B.B. King’s, Billboard Onboard, and the Rolling Stone Rock Room. B.B. King’s doubles as Lincoln Center Stage, but you won’t get the two confused. While B.B. King’s upbeat jazz brought guests out to the dance floor, Lincoln Center Stage focuses more on orchestral and chamber music.

B.B. King’s was the crowd favorite on the sailing. Throughout the trip that venue was the most consistently packed, and most people in the audience ventured out onto the dance floor at least one during the voyage. The band covered well-known music by artists ranging from The Beatles to Aretha Franklin.

Nieuw Statendam Staterooms

Verandah Staterooms on Nieuw Statendam don’t leave much to be desired. With a comfortable seating area and bed, the stateroom accomplishes what it needs to at a base level; however, there are some extras that set it over the edge.

The stateroom design is modern and functional. Storage space is ample, and blends seemlessly into the design of the room. For two adult women who packed a lot of clothes, putting all of our belongings and suitcases away was a breeze.

The bathroom on the ship is nice, but nothing to write home about. It was fairly standard, with one exception. The lighting in the bathroom was so bright, which really assisted the process of getting ready. As someone who wears a lot of makeup, it is not always easy to get ready under the dim bathroom lights on some ships. I often find myself bouncing back and forth between the balcony, desk, and bathroom to find the perfect lighting. On Nieuw Statendam, perfect lighting was readily available in one place.

My only criticism about the room? The fold out couch bed. Yes, we could have gotten the king bed split into two smaller parts, which would be a viable option for a couple of friends traveling together. However, if there are more than three people in the stateroom, it is going to be tight when the sofa is pulled out. That could be expected; however, we were not able to walk around the couch to get to our balcony, so oftentimes we found ourselves crawling over it instead.

That brings me to the real star of the stateroom – the verandah. Most of the balconies on the ship are double long, meaning they have around twice the space of a traditional verandah. However, our stateroom had a balcony that was double long, and double wide. Giving us about four times the space of a regular verandah. It was the perfect place to sit out while drinking coffee or eating a room-service breakfast.

Final Thoughts

There are things to do aboard that are not centered around music or shows, but more often than not the scheduled activities involve one or both of those elements. While that is typical for some ships, the Music Walk on Nieuw Statendam makes it clear that music is a central focus.

Although there are activities for children, the ship is better suited for adults. This is not a ship I would consider taking with children under the age of 21.

I would highly recommend this ship, however, for people who like to see a portion of the world in style and comfort while relaxing. The activities and itineraries are well suited for guests in their mid and upper years. If your goal is to party until the sun comes up, this is not the ship for you. But if you’re someone who enjoys a relaxed cruise experience with plenty of pool space, good music and enticing alternative dining venues, then Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam may be just for you.

As of this writing, Nieuw Statendam is currently sailing throughout the Caribbean. Come summer and fall, the ship will explore Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
