Becoming a Costco Member Could Save You $1,000

Costco Header Image

Like clockwork, every fourth quarter GM runs a Costco Auto Program discount, and like clockwork, we get customers wanting to take advantage of it but cannot. Let’s go through a little history.

SUPPLIER PRICING WITH COSTCO

Until 2020, the Costco Auto Program enabled you to get GM Supplier Pricing. As it happened, our pricing was normally below supplier pricing, but you could get a Costco cash card of $300 or $700, depending on your membership level. And because it was a Supplier Pricing-based discount program, you couldn’t combine it with the Educator, Military, College, First Responder, or Healthcare (that group is now known as an Affinity Discount) discounts that were also Supplier Pricing based discount programs.

Then, in 2021, things changed. GM eliminated Costco as a Supplier Pricing-based discount program and changed it to a straight rebate program. For example, it would be $1000 of the rebate, and it would combine (be stackable) with the Affinity Discounts. This year, GM changed the Affinity Discounts to be straight cash rebates instead of pricing programs, and though you cannot combine two different Affinity Programs (Educator and Military), you can combine an Affinity program and a Costco discount. At least that was the case in June when GM last ran a Costco discount program. In our opinion, this is much better. You could not combine Costco with GM Employee or GM Supplier programs in the past. You can now. This was an obstacle to many in the past to use Costco membership to save money. It seems to have been removed.

2021 Q4 COSTCO HAPPENING?

We cannot say for certain GM will do a Costco Auto Program in Q4, but it has for several years in a row, and our opinion is that we would be very surprised if it did not come back in Q4 of this year. In spite of the excellent demand and low supply, GM did Costco earlier this year, so we do not think current market conditions are an obstacle.

Historically, the Costco Auto Program rebates have been $1000 and even higher for Bolts at as much as $3000. Let’s assume for a minute that history is a guide. Then you should expect a $1000 rebate on popular expensive models like Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, and perhaps Colorado. That has been the pattern. Big Disclaimer: GM will do what it wants to do on this, so nothing is for certain on these numbers.

WHAT IS THE GOTCHA?

GM and Costco do not allow you to become a Costco member on October 21 as an example, and take advantage of the Q4 program. You MUST be a member as of September 30 to avail yourself of these discounts. Additionally, there have been pop-up Costco programs run on an ad hoc basis for a month in the last couple of years, but you have to be a member by the end of the previous month of the month it is announced.

This is where spending $60 per year on a Gold Membership at Costco could result in savings. It would take almost 17 years of memberships to eat away $1000 of rebate. So, if you bought one Chevy in 17 years, paid Costco memberships every year, and used a $1000 rebate, you would be even. That should be pretty easy to be ahead of as most people buy vehicles more often than every 17 years. So, it is good to maintain a base-level membership in Costco to be able to take advantage of the large rebates on offer when the time comes and you happen to be in the market for a Chevy!

If you are not a Costco member, become one by 9/30/21 so you are prepared for Q4 of this year should Chevy offer Costco Auto Program rebates and should you be ready to buy a new Chevy.

Question about Costco Card

FOR THE COSTCO CARD… to help everyone  this is for chevrolet, i cannot speak for other brands.

if you are purchasing or leasing a vehicle that has the NATIONWIDE employee pricing for everyone, you still get the costco cash card.
ie - 2020 equinox lease has employee pricing for everyone as a NATIONWIDE promo, you still get the costco card.

if you are purchasing or new lease a vehicle that is NOT under nationwide employee pricing for everyone program, and you use the GM employee CODE or authorization number by being a GM Employee or having a GM friends and family discount, you do DO NOT get the cash card.
ie - 2019 Blazer DOES NOT have employee pricing for everyone. you CAN use the GM employee code to help bring down your cost of the lease, but you will NOT receive the cash card.

so long story short, true GM employee’s and GM Friends and family DO NOT get the cash card if they use the code to discount the car.

Chevy and GM. Not sure about the other badges, yet. My understanding is that preferred pricing is invoice plus 1.5% (plus the $500 gift card). It's not on all vehicle, as it doesn't include trucks.

More information should come out soon but most of the Chevy/GM dealerships have info on their site but want you to come down for pricing.

Yep. Had a '18 Colorado. Was back at the dealer 3 times in a month for issues. Took a huge loss, but glad I unloaded it for a different brand. Not worth the freaking hassle..

You can get a 400$ pre paid mastercard while buying a 240$ phone, I don't think getting a 500$ gift card (that you can only use in Costco) while buying 30000$+ car is a good deal. Also, screw GM and American companies. Cheaply made crap that depreciates like nothing.

GM dealers always have a full lot, which is why they always have these kind of 'nice' offer. Good makes like Toyota and Honda don't need huge discount to get rid of inventories. New cars are always flying off their lot.

VERY bad timing to be promoting GM products. I just bought a new car, and GM wasn't even a remote possibility in my mind, didn't even go take a look at their web site.
I can't afford to buy cheap stuff. Therefore, I'm thirsty for deals on durable goods.

Took family member to look at Volt and Bolt, they were pricing them like diamonds. Asking for $45k OTD for premier model Volt. No price wiggle room except incentives and mentioned Costco members get $500 off. Ya right, $45k for a phev the size of a corolla. No thanks

Yes I agree, a co-worker does security at one of the Cami sites which has thousands of vehicles just sitting there to be picked up/ordered by the dealerships. Mind you they’re all Equinox lol.

Wait til the bulk of the products get into the market that were produced at any facility scheduled to close. You think quality is questionable now... I wouldn't want anything built in 2018 2019 from GM . Can you imagine the things half assembled or what they have left inside the dash!

You are obviously uninformed.

GM has plenty of cars and trucks recommended in Consumers Reports. GM has won Motor Trend car of the year 4 times in the last 10 years and truck of the year 3 times in the last 10 years.

Are they the best at everything nope. But lots of good and I love my Silverado and my wife loves her Volt.

Costco preferred pricing with GM/Chev/Buick is back, but with more models to choose from. + 500$ Costco cash for doing a post sale survey
We can do the brand debate, new vs used etc, all day. This is hot for people buy or on the fence about buying because - pre-negotiated discounts, Costco's involvement generally means less BS, and bonus $500$ on top.

Some helpful specifics:
  • Trucks, SUVs, and Sports cars [Corvette and Camero] -- sorry folks no cars or EVs
  • In stock models only - no special orders, but they can pull inventory from other dealers still
  • Existing Costco Members Only "To qualify you must be a Costco member by July 2, 2019."
  • $500 Costco card can take up to 3 weeks, is electronic and can only be redeemed in the warehouse or Costco.ca - you cannot use it at the gas bar or for Costco Travel
  • Incentive stacks with most other available incentives
  • "Preferred pricing" is Dealer Invoice + 1.5%*

Fine Print:
How is my Preferred Price calculated, and do I have to pay any additional fees?
Preferred Price is calculated as follows: Dealer Invoice Price (before dealer incentives) + 1.5% of Equipped-MSRP*.

The following Additional Fees are NOT included in the Preferred Price and will be charged separately: advertising fee (1% of Equipped-MSRP*), $150 program participation fee, destination freight charge, $100 air conditioning charge, dealer administration/documentation fees (up to $200), tax, title (documentation), registration fee, insurance, additional products or services, personal property registry, any dealer trade fees, and license fees.

*Equipped-MSRP is defined as the MSRP of the model as purchased, including factory-installed optional equipment and LPO-Accessories, but excluding the Additional Fees as defined above.

Please see dealer for details.

Does anyone know what the "preferred" pricing is? Or is this one of those things where we have to go to the dealership to find out?

never mind found my answer:

I think it’s the rough equivalent of Ford supplier pricing (I.e you work for a company that supplies GM with parts/ services)

Not too bad of a deal really.

I have EPP (Employer Preferred Pricing) through my employer at GM and bought my 2016 GMC Sierra SLT All Terrain (MRSP of $64,XXX) and paid $50,XXX taxes in on the road (without a trade in).

I was able to negotiate even further....so the deals aren't that bad, really. You just have to get to the dealer at optimal timing. (end of month, end of year...when they are trying to make quotas, etc)

Currently those models are seeing 15 to 20 percent off already, not sure if invoice plus 1.5 is as good.

You could not combine Costco with GM Employee or GM Supplier programs in the gm costco cash card.

Cash Back and No Haggling: How the Costco Auto Program Saves Money and Sweat On Your Next Car

2019 Volvo S60 Inscription Sedan Review: This Car Oozes Sophistication And Style

The Volvo S60. Credit: Dawn Gibson Thigpen

Costco isn’t just for buying in bulk.

Even if you’re a Costco member, you might not know much about the Costco Auto program. We think of Costco as a place to buy things in bulk, like toilet paper and double-sized jars of peanut butter, not to mention, trying miles of samples. It’s also where we go for deals on things we want, like Dyson vacuums, LG widescreen TVs and Keurig coffee makers.

But just as the company negotiates rock bottom prices on those things, Costco also strikes best-deal pricing on cars.

Can you imagine not having to negotiate the price at all? Not having to deal with a pushy salesman and getting straight to the deal? That’s what we learned when we looked into how the Costco Auto Program works, and what we heard when we asked friends who have used it.

Costco’s Membership Perks Include Discounted Pricing and, Often, a Gift Card With a Car Purchase

If you do a little research on Costco membership you will find there are quite a few more perks, including low prices on gas, vacation packages, fine jewelry, insurance, home services and car maintenance such as oil changes and new tires.

The car buying program does the same thing, pre-arranging prices on almost any car and then setting up a process designed to make the purchase easy for you. So, no haggling.

But the program goes further: Costco often has special pricing on specific models, typically fully loaded at a base or mid-level price, and includes any dealer or manufacturer incentives, such as cash back or special financing. And, often, members taking advantage of these specials will get a Costco cash card, too.

How the Costco Auto Program Works

First, you need a Costco membership. The rest is really simple. To qualify for a Costco Auto Program deal you need to register and get an authorization number. You must also be an active Costco member and take delivery of your new vehicle within a certain time frame. You can read all the specific details here before you start researching your purchase. After registering, begin your online research, conveniently all accessible via the Costcoauto.com website. Not only can you see the wide variety of makes and models, but you’ll find details about each trim level, features, safety information and manufacturer incentives, such as cash back or special financing.

With a new vehicle, select the dealer and submit a request; this will generate a contact from the dealership for an appointment, but you can also obtain direct contact information if you want to contact them on your own. At the dealership you’ll meet with the Costco authorized salesperson, take a test drive and view the special Costco Member-Only price sheet to see the pre-arranged price. You’re under no obligation to purchase the car and the dealership is limited to add-ons they are allowed to sell you. However, if they do sell you anything extra, such as an extended warranty or service package, it comes with a Costco discount.

If you have a vehicle to trade in, inquire with the dealer as Costco doesn’t manage or monitor that part of the sales deal, so be sure to ask your questions and be prepared to know if the trade-in offer is a fair one. And even if you’re not buying a vehicle right now, the Costco website can point you to a participating dealer where you can save 15% off parts, service, and accessories just for being a Costco member. That can really add up fast.

Deals for All the Wheels

Pre-owned cars are also eligible, and the purchase process is similar. Just be sure to show your current Costco membership card when you arrive at the dealership. The dealer’s Costco sales rep will let you know if you need to bring anything else. Aside from cars, the program also offers options for motorcycles, power sports vehicles, and RVs. You can pretty much find deals for all types of wheels using the Costco program.

We Had to Ask Costco Car Buyers: Would You Do it Again?

If you’re unsure about buying a car through Costco, ask around. Chances are, someone you know has already used the program and has good things to say about it,

“Love, loved, loved it – we purchased two [cars] through the Costco Auto Buying Program and would do it again,” said my friend Gayle Feldman Turner. “The ease of it all! They made buying a car a breeze. We knew what we wanted, called and talked to them, they located one, no haggling over price – no fuss or muss or “let me talk to my manager and see what we can do,” she said.

Buy a Car in … 20 Minutes???

“The dealership where they had us pick up both cars had the paperwork and car ready and waiting when we got there,” Gayle told me. citibank commercial card phone number took maybe 20 minutes from the time we got there till we were driving it home. It was seriously one of the greatest experiences of our lives, so much so that we bought the second car through them as well. They took all the fear of what you normally dread when you buy a car out of is cranberry juice good for you during pregnancy equation and spoiled us forever at just how easy buying a car should be! We’ve suggested it to friends and family and they all have similar stories!”

More Savings, More Gas Money!

An easy, no haggle experience is probably worth the price of membership. But like all things Costco, the deal gets better: each purchase includes any manufacturer rebates and incentives that can be stacked with your member-only price. Information on these is available on the website as well.

And, for some cars that don’t offer manufacturer rebates, Costco often has a cash card incentive for making the purchase. Currently, there is a Volvo promotion going on. Purchase or lease an eligible, new 2019 Volvo to receive Volvo employee pricing and Costco member incentives such as $1,000 incentive on S60, S90, V60, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC60 and XC90  OR  $3,000 incentive on S60 T6 R-Design and S60 T6 Inscription. And for completing a Costco auto program survey, you can get a $100 Costco card. How sweet is that?

Millions of Sales Without Haggling? Imagine that!

The Costco Auto Program, which began in 1989, consistently ranks as one of the top member-based auto-buying programs, resulting in more than 2 million vehicle sales at participating dealerships in the last five years. It’s a relief to know that it can be easy to shop for a car and save money on one of the biggest purchases we make. The best part? Haggling is a thing of the past!

The Costco Auto Program will help you save money on your next car purchase, you can earn a Costco gift card, and best of all, no haggling!

Question about Costco Card

FOR THE COSTCO CARD… to help everyone  this is for chevrolet, i cannot speak for other brands.

if you are purchasing or leasing a vehicle that has the NATIONWIDE employee pricing for everyone, you still get the costco cash card.
ie - 2020 equinox lease has employee pricing for everyone as a NATIONWIDE promo, you still get the costco card.

if you are purchasing or new lease a vehicle that is NOT under nationwide employee pricing for everyone program, and you use the GM employee CODE or authorization number by being a GM Employee or having a GM friends and family amazon prime video com, you do DO NOT gm costco cash card the cash card.
ie - 2019 Blazer DOES NOT have employee pricing for everyone. you CAN use the GM employee code to help bring down your cost of the lease, but you will NOT receive the cash card.

so long story short, true GM employee’s and GM Friends and family DO NOT get the cash card if they use the code to discount the car.
