tyra banks bikini 2019

Tyra is back! She came out of modeling retirement to cover the 2019 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. This is. The model and TV presenter is pictured in a yellow bikini in the Bahamas on the cover of the Summer 2019 edition. It comes 22 years after Banks. Tyra Banks made a huge return to modeling to grace the cover of Sports for the 2019 spread — bringing back the red polka dot bikini.

Tyra Banks Comes Out Retirement To Cover Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2019

Tyra Banks, and her signature smize, are back!

The 45-year-old model turned entrepreneur came out of modeling retirement to cover the 2019 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, more than two decades after she became the first black woman to grace the cover of the magazine alone in 1997.

Tyra brought back her famous curves for the 2019 SI Swimsuit photo shoot, posing in a yellow string bikini for the cover. (And let me just say, she's still got it!) "My first one was 23 years ago, how crazy is that," Tyra said on Good Morning America after revealing her new SI Swimsuit cover. "I’m like damn — I’m 45 dog!"

The TV host also spoke about her modeling journey in a behind-the-scenes video of her Bahamas photo shoot. "Being the first black woman on the cover, I didn't dream it because I never thought it would be possible," she explained. "Almost like this, I never thought it would be possible to be 45 years old and on the cover of this magazine again.”

Tyra's new SI Swimsuit cover marks her third for the magazine as she first starred on the cover of the special Sports IllustratedSwimsuit edition in 1996 alongside model Valeria Mazza before getting her solo cover in 1997.

"Since Tyra’s first cover in 1996, she’s transformed herself into nothing less than a mogul, a cultural force and a supernova of inspiration and empowerment," SI Swimsuit Editor MJ Day said, per People. "She’s kind of the Swimsuit Issue ethos come to life, everything we know this franchise can be."

In addition to gracing the cover of the 2019 issue, Tyra also recreated her 1996 cover, where she wore a polka dot bikini, for the new issue's photo spread. "We couldn’t find the exact one in the archives – it was the polka dot bikini so we recreated that bikini," she shared. "I recreated [the look] — 25 pounds heavier."

Tyra is one of the three faces gifted an SI Swimsuit cover this year. USA National Women’s Soccer team player Alex Morgan, and 2018 SI Swimsuit Model Search winner Camille Kostek were also honored with their own cover.

"The three women that make up the covers of the 2019 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue represent the brand in the most powerful way possible," MJ said. "While each individual woman is so unique, they come together cohesively to tell a spectacular story."

“The three women that make up the covers of the 2019 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue represent the brand in the most powerful way possible,” said SI Swimsuit Editor, MJ Day. “While each individual woman is so unique, they come together cohesively to tell a spectacular story.”

The editor acknowledged how the diversity of this year’s models is a testament to the changing definition of beauty: “Between these three women and the 31 additional that grace SI Swimsuit 2019, the message is clear. Beauty is synonymous with a lot more than just a pretty face.”

Banks, now 45, was the first woman to ever star on the cover of SI Swimsuit and the first-ever African-American woman to grace the cover of GQ. This year’s Swimsuit issue is available now.

Part of what made this cover possible has been editor MJ Day's incredible work to make the issue — shortened from Swimsuit to Swim this year — more inclusive. The last few years have seen more models of color, a wider array of body sizes, and issue veterans like Paulina Porizkova and Christie Brinkley coming back for spreads in their 50s and 60s. And that new undercurrent is one of the reasons Banks, who helped the magazine take one of its first and most important steps toward inclusivity in 1997, was a no-brainer for one of this year's three covers, according to Day.

“Since Tyra’s first cover in 1996, she’s transformed herself into nothing less than a mogul, a cultural force and a supernova of inspiration and empowerment," Day said in a Sports Illustrated post announcing the covers. "She’s kind of the Swimsuit Issue ethos come to life, everything we know this franchise can be."

And Tyra herself is aware of just how important her second solo Swimsuit Issue cover is, posting it on Twitter and writing, "This is for everybody that has been told that they are not good enough because of their body, their age, their everything. #BanX is here to tell you that you ARE friggin’ fierce no matter what anybody says!"

You can find Banks's cover — along with covers featuring soccer star Alex Morgan and model Camille Kostek — on newsstands now.

Tyra Banks returns to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover 22 years later

Twenty-two years after making history as the first black model featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, Tyra Banks is gracing the cover again.

Banks, who has been featured in the annual swim edition multiple times before, received her first solo cover in 1997, after starring on the cover alongside model Valeria Mazza the year before.

On Wednesday, the magazine announced the supermodel and TV personality had earned the honour again.

The 45-year-old supermodel came out of modelling retirement specifically for the shoot, which was photographed by Laretta Houston in Great Exuma, Bahamas.

In the photos, Banks, who paved the way for other models of colour in the industry, poses in a yellow Andi Bagus string bikini.

Of the opportunity, the supermodel said on Good Morning America: “My first one was 23 years ago, how crazy is that. I’m like ‘Damn, I’m 45 dog!’”

According to Banks, the idea was to recreate the iconic cover photo from more than two decades ago, which saw her posing in a red-and-pink polka dot bikini.

“We couldn’t find the actual one in the archives - so they had it made again and I put it on again. 25 pounds heavier,” she said.

During the photo shoot, Banks told SI that she is “telling people that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and ages,” so she has to “put my money where my mouth is.

“I have to make sure my message is pure.”

SI Swimsuit editor MJ Day said: “Since Tyra’s first cover in 1996, she’s transformed herself into nothing less than a mogul, a cultural force and a supernova of inspiration and empowerment. She’s kind of the Swimsuit Issue ethos come to life, everything we know this franchise can be.”

Banks first started modelling when she was 15 and soon after become a global icon in the industry, featuring on numerous magazine covers and earning the honour of Victoria’s Secret Angel throughout her career.

In addition to breaking barriers as an African-American supermodel, she has also co-authored a book, Tyra’s Beauty, Inside and Out, acted in several movies, and created and hosted the reality television show America’s Next Top Model, which ran for twenty-four seasons.

The supermodel and body-positive activist is one of three women to earn covers for the 2019 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Other cover stars include USA National Women’s Soccer team star Alex Morgan and Camille Kostek, the 2018 SI Swimsuit Model Search winner.

Tyra Banks is back and on the cover of 'Sports Illustrated'

Tyra Banks just made the ultimate comeback.

"Sports Illustrated Swimsuit" revealed that Banks was their cover girl Wednesday morning with the media mogul wearing an itty-bitty yellow string bikini.

It's hard to believe that Banks is 45.

It's only fitting that Banks land the cover once again as she was the first black woman to ever be on the cover of the magazine solo in 1997.

Even Banks can't believe where the time has gone, telling ABC's "GMA," "My first [cover] was 23 years ago, how crazy is that?!"

This is Banks' third time on the cover.

"Since Tyra's first cover in 1996, she's transformed herself into nothing less than a mogul, a cultural force and a supernova of inspiration and empowerment," "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit" Editor MJ Day said in a statement. "She's kind of the Swimsuit Issue ethos come to life, everything we know this franchise can be."

Banks started her career modeling as a teen and landed covers of nearly every fashion magazine. In 1993 she signed a contract with CoverGirl and went on to become a Victoria's Secret Angel. She dabbled in acting, starring on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and eventually started her own production company, which went on to produce her hit series, "America's Next Top Model."

Banks welcomed her first child in 2016, a baby boy.

45 and fine!

Tyra Banks has landed another cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, more than 20 years after she made history as the first black woman to appear on the cover alone in 1997. Her latest cover comes more than a decade after she retired from modeling in 2005.

Olympic soccer player Alex Morgan,  29, and model Camille Kostek, 27, appear on other cover versions.

Banks reflected on her first solo cover in a video shared to the Instagram page for the issue.

"Being the first black woman on the cover, I didn't dream it, because I never thought it was possible, almost like this," she said. "I never thought it'd be possible – I'm 45-years-old on the cover of this magazine again."

For the photos taken in Great Exuma, Bahamas, Banks was back in pink polka dots as seen on her 1997 cover.

Banks said in a video shared to the issue's Twitter account, shooting now offers more luxuries, like a windscreen and an umbrella to keep the sun out of her eyes.

She also revealed how her figure has changed.

"My body's different," she said, gesturing that her chest had grown. "Booty is bigger. Everything's a little bigger.

"At first I was like, 'Ooh, I've got more stuff to work with,' she said. "At first, it was a little bit more difficult, but after the first shot, I was like, 'I got this.' "

It was revealed last month that the new issue would feature its first model in a hijab and burkini: trailblazer Halima Aden.

MJ Day, SI Swimsuit editor, promised an issue with "a wide range of age and race and levels of modesty that really is a first for us" during a segment on "Good Morning America."

"This is for everybody that has been told that they are not good enough because of their body, their age, their everything," saysTyra Banks, who has come out of retirement to cover the 2019 edition of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, over two decades since she became the first black woman to cover the magazine solo in 1997.

But it's not just the 45-year-old supermodel's curvaceous physique in a yellow string bikini that's set tongues wagging. "#BanX is here to tell you that you ARE friggin’ fierce no matter what anybody says!" Banks continues on Instagram, lifting the veil on her persona "BanX," which marks the beginning of a new, even bolder chapter for the boundary-breaking star. “BanX is me, but she’s also every woman,” she says. “BanX represents rebirth and that beauty boundaries only exist to be broken.” According to Banks, her new moniker is emblematic of “X-ing out cookie-cutter beauty,” and the decision to hone in on her last time was meant to buck the norm as well. “Mononyms are exciting in the industry,” explains the multi-hyphenate talent in the cover story. “But usually models use their first names, like Iman. I want to flip the script and go by my last name. I’m taking something familiar and making it new. I’m wiser now and thicker.”

Banks's cover breaks on the heels of this Sports Illustrated edition’s other expectation-shattering moves. For one, Czech-born '80s supermodel Paulina Porizkova, who first appeared in SI's swimsuit issue in 1983, is making her tenth appearance in the annual issue at age 54. And then Halima Aden, the 21-year-old Somali-American runway star, is the first model to wear a hijab and burkini in the magazine's pages.

From plus-size models Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser, who've promoted body positivity and size inclusivity while rising in the industry, to Beyoncé, who's made a point of shifting the narrative around the female body through the lens of motherhood, Banks is among the scores of famous women who are leveraging their star power to fight back against antiquated body ideals and radically alter the status quo. “I am telling people that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and ages,” says Banks. “I have to put my money where my mouth is.”

  • Tyra Banks came out of modeling retirement to grace Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue.
  • The host of America's Next Top Model made history in 1997 when she became the first black woman to grace the cover of the magazine alone.
  • This is the 45-year-old's third time on the SI Swimsuit cover.

Tyra Banks is back—and this time, she's smizing on the 2019 cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit.

The America's Next Top Model host came out of retirement from the modeling industry to pose in a very sexy yellow Andi Bagus string bikini.

"My first one was 23 years ago, how crazy is that," Banks said on Good Morning America. When GMA host Lara Spencer asked what her reaction was when she first saw the issue, Banks responded, "Dang, I'm 45, dog!"

In 1996, the supermodel made history as the first Black woman to be featured on the cover, posing alongside fellow model Valeria Mazza. A year later, in 1997, Banks made her solo debut in a polka red bikini.

"Since Tyra's first cover in 1996, she's transformed herself into nothing less than a mogul, a cultural force, and a supernova of inspiration and empowerment," SI Swimsuit editor MJ Day said in a statement.

For the 2019 issue, Banks recreated her 1997 cover, a move she wanted to make to show that beauty has no age.

"There is this stereotype that only a 20-year-old woman in a bikini is hot. Like once we reach a certain age, we are no longer desirable. But I want to show that modeling has no age. I’m coming out of retirement to practice what I preach," Banks said. "I am telling people that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and ages. I have to put my money where my mouth is. I have to make sure my message is pure.”

In her SIinterview, Banks also revealed she's changing her name to "BanX" and will start modeling again after retiring in 2015. The new name means "X-ing out cookie-cutter beauty," she said.

"Mononyms are exciting in the industry. But usually models use their first names, like Iman. I want to flip the script and go by my last name. I’m taking something familiar and making it new. I’m wiser now and thicker," she added. "BanX is me, but she’s also every woman. BanX represents rebirth and that beauty boundaries only exist to be broken."
