2020 Best Online Community Colleges in New York Badge

New York is home to one of the largest community college systems in the U.S., providing many opportunities to earn online Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Applied Science degrees. In addition to these associate degrees, students can complete general education requirements necessary for transfer to a bachelor's degree program. Students in New York choose online community colleges because of convenience, affordability, and breadth of programs in such fields of study as accounting, cybersecurity, psychology, travel and events management, informatics, and social or health sciences. Of the schools on this list, 16 cost less than $5,000 per year. Read more about online community colleges in New York and how much they cost, what it's like to attend, and potential career opportunities after graduation.

2020 Online Community Colleges in New York - Ranking Details

For each school, we conducted manual research to provide prospective students with more details about the schools' online programs. Explore online degrees offered and accreditation information below.

Overview of Online Community Colleges in New York

New York boasts two community college systems: the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY). SUNY has 30 community colleges statewide serving 174,000 students, many of whom enroll in the 324 online associate degree programs currently offered. CUNY serves approximately 91,000 students with seven community colleges and 12 online associate degree programs in the five boroughs — Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx — that make up New York City.

A community college is a good place to start exploring career options and degree paths. Students enroll in SUNY and CUNY to earn associate degrees to boost their prospects in the highly competitive New York job market. Many save money by completing their first two years of college and general education credits before transferring to a bachelor's degree program. Most online associate degree courses are worth three credit hours. It takes full-time students approximately two years to complete a 90-credit associate degree. Part-time students often take longer to finish.

Students enroll in SUNY and CUNY to earn associate degrees to boost their prospects in the highly competitive New York job market.

Some community colleges in the SUNY and CUNY systems have noted higher graduation and transfer rates. Because tuition and other factors vary by campus, always check individual campus information when doing your research.

How Much Does it Cost to Attend Community College in New York?

Average yearly tuition and fees in New York are $5,390 for in-state students and $9,340 for out-of-state students — much higher than the $3,730 national average for full-time, in-district students. SUNY charges tuition based on state residency for online programs. However, CUNY charges in-state tuition for all online programs regardless of residency, which helps students save money.

The State of New York enacted the first accessible college tuition program in the U.S. with the Excelsior Scholarship to address affordability. The Excelsior Scholarship provides free community college tuition for approximately 940,000 individuals and families earning less than $125,000 a year.

Students who meet the following specific requirements may qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship:

  • Established New York residency
  • Enrollment in a SUNY or CUNY community college
  • Completion of 30 credit hours per year
  • Continued residency in New York after graduation

Federal financial aid can also help pay for tuition. Students should first fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to see if they qualify for federal grants, scholarships, work study programs, or student loans. Federal student loans offer lower interest rates than traditional loans through private lenders and have more flexible repayment options.

Attending an Online New York Community College

Working students may consider online learning as a convenient way to complete their education. Classes are often small in size and asynchronous, so students can log in anytime and virtually anywhere to complete tasks. Distance learning programs may also appeal to students who are not interested in traditional campus life and want to focus on their classes and career goals without distraction.

Those eager to gain industry-specific job skills without completing an associate degree or general education courses for transfer can earn certificates online in areas of study such as culinary arts, medical billing and coding, dental assisting, computer networking, and court reporting. Community college certificate programs may be a convenient way to pursue higher education and gain marketable skills.

SUNY and CUNY have a state-recognized Transfer Guarantee Program for students transferring within these systems, allowing students who meet general education requirements to transfer from a two-year college to a four-year program as juniors. Both SUNY and CUNY systems offer several online bachelor's and graduate programs at their four-year universities. Students transferring to schools outside these systems would still have standard enrollment requirements to meet, including official transcripts, a minimum 2.0 GPA, an application fee of approximately $50, and sometimes a letter of intent.

Careers After Community College in New York

While earning an online associate degree in New York can prepare students for work anywhere, many stay local after graduation. The SUNY and CUNY online community college programs help students acquire the in-demand skills New York employers desire. Students can network with peers and faculty online to make professional connections and boost career opportunities.

Average Unemployment Rate by Population

When searching for work in areas with high unemployment rates, such as New York's tight job market, community college graduates with marketable skills may have a competitive edge. As of September 2021, state unemployment is 7.4% and in New York City alone it's 8.9%. These figures are much higher than the 4.8% national average unemployment rate reported by the BLS in September, or the rates in states like Nebraska and Utah, which hover around 2%.

It's imperative to carefully consider future job prospects before enrolling in an online program. Finding work in a growth area increases your marketability. According to the New York State Department of Labor, there are three top job sectors that are showing high growth rate projections through 2028:

  • Healthcare and Social Assistance enjoy a job growth rate of 34%. SUNY and CUNY both offer online programs in health information technology, community and human services, dental assisting, medical assisting, and health studies to meet this demand.
  • Education Services are seeing a job growth rate of 14.9%. Students can earn an online associate degree or a certificate in early childhood education, educational studies, teaching assistance, developmental disabilities, and special education assistance.
  • Professional and Business Services lists a job growth rate of 14.6%. SUNY and CUNY offer associate degree and certificate programs in areas such as business administration, communications, accounting, marketing, paralegal, and business and environmental sustainability.

Where you choose to live may also dictate your earning potential and overall livability. Cost of living indexes measure how far your salary will go toward expenses in one place as compared to another. While these numbers take into account many factors and can change over time, a recent analysis found that New York City ranks very high at 187.2, where the U.S. average is 100. Other areas throughout New York state ranked lower than the national average, such as:

Between lower unemployment rates and a lower cost of living, choosing to live outside of New York City after graduation from a New York community college may be more affordable.

Press release from Rockland Community College:

2021-09-20

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. (September 20, 2021) – Rockland Community College has been selected as a 2021 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award winner from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the nation's oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This national honor recognizes US colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. RCC will be featured, along with 100 other recipients, in the November 2021 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. (September 20, 2021) –

This is the first time RCC has been named as a HEED Award recipient.

Find out what's happening in Nyack-Piermont with free, real-time updates from Patch.

"Diversity reflects an appreciation and respect for the unique gifts and talents in all of us," said RCC President Dr. Michael A. Baston. "To close equity gaps, community colleges must first offer a safe and welcoming environment. Then we can create strategic partnerships between the college and the community and take advantage of our organizational resources and collaborative leadership to ensure equitable opportunities and outcomes for all our students."

"Last year RCC started developing an actionable plan by establishing a working group to review the legacy of diversity efforts led by the College's former Diversity Council and to build on their outcomes to reflect current realities. We are now developing a new college-wide plan that incorporates those recommendations with recommendations from all areas of the College. The new plan will include specific outcomes that are measurable using key performance indicators to be reported on an equity scorecard," stated Melissa L. Roy, Chief Diversity Officer for RCC.

"The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion," said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. "We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus."

Not many complaints for the most part except that their sit is often down and they redo their online school system at least twice a second harvest food bank of central florida brevard branch, which isn't very helpful. Also, some of the professors aren't great, but that's not the college's fault. Some of the staff isn't the best, but everything else makes up for it.

Things are always happening on campus, All the offices are great EXCEPT financial aid! THEY ARE HORRIBLE! Its one of the best community colleges, professors are really involved.

Very good school definitely underrated

Rockland Community College is a great starting point to transfer to four years. The environment is great with highly motivated professors. It is extremely multicultural, so if you like diversity, this place is a must! The LGBTQ+ community is highly welcomed as well!

The staff here are the most genuine caring individuals I have ever seen. There is always someone to talk to about anything you need help with. They have a food pantry, free counseling and more. There are support/discussion groups each week and events for the students all the time. For the most part the professors are caring and give great classes.

I graduated Im 2 years which is not common at this university. I made it through but if I would of done it all over I would of never went here. It trying to be a hater but it was like pulling teeth, staff doesnt care about quality of work and only 5% of staff is full time. If you plan on transfer half your credits will transfer. Do your research

i don't feel safe. don't go to community college in a bad neighborhood, go to a better school

Lots of programs. Great way to transfer to a 4 yr university or start immediately with resources that land internships / job placement programs. RCC is very close to public transportation and 30 min from NYC. Best decision of my life to attend.

This school is good and bad. In the regards to the fact that yes, you save money and can live at home and have a flexible schedule. You can also participate in clubs outside of classes to make your stay worth while. It is negative because extra help and the tutoring centers only have limited time spots.I have found the departments don't communicate

Its veryyy hard to make friends here. Due to the fact that half the year its too cold to go outside, there are only about 5 spots to go to in between classes. The food is overpriced. The faculty is very nice, helpful. The campus is clean, good academics, but there is almost no social opportunity and for a commuter, that is really discouraging.

The school is always kept clean. The food is way over priced they have small yogurt cups for $4 which is insane. There is not much to choose in the zillow homes for rent greensboro nc. There is barely any cameras on campus. There are people who are involved in hit and runs in the parking lots and nothing can be done because there is no cameras or public safety around.

BEST COLLEGE EVER!

It's a good community college

The campus is fine, they need to upgrade their gym. There aren't a lot of options when it comes to food spots around the school which sucks. when it comes to social life, people pretty much just stick with the people they already knew from high school so if you are new to the area and don't know anyone it is hard to get to know people.

A.A. in Computer wire transfer to commonwealth bank of australia Information Systems. It's a great school to take summer courses if you're attending another university, but If you want to get an associates in a computer field, you will not find many knowledgeable professors here. Go to Bergen, Orange, Dutchess, or literally any other community college.

SUNY Rockland is the best college I have ever attended. It's a faculty that puts their students first. It also has great academics and opportunities not only for your resume but for your own pleasure as a student. It's a great first step into college and I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for success and memories

Schools good if you want to save money and assure yourself on your degree, lots of cliques. just get in, take care of yourself, get what you need to get done finished then go back home

Love the school and the professors, they need to be stricter on the clubs tho. Got harassed by people in the digital entertainment club, really sucks because i was excited to join it and had heard good things about it.

The unhappiest ive ever been in school. most stay for two but after one semester i had enough and am out of here ASAP. good luck trying to make friends or enjoy interacting with your professors

good peoplea lot of opportunities if you take them.
