Costco Wholesale Corporation (doing business asCostco Wholesale and also known simply as Costco) is an American multinational corporation which operates a chain of membership-only big-boxretail stores (warehouse club).[4] As of 2020[update], Costco was the fifth largest retailer in the world,[5] and the world's largest retailer of choice and prime beef, organic foods, rotisserie chicken, and wine as of 2016[update].[6] In 2021, Costco was ranked #10 on the Fortune 500 rankings of the largest United States corporations by total revenue.[7]

Costco's worldwide headquarters are in Issaquah, Washington, an eastern suburb of Seattle, although its Kirkland Signature house label bears the name of its former location in Kirkland. The company opened its first warehouse (the chain's term for its retail outlets) in Seattle in 1983.[8][9] Through mergers, however, Costco's corporate history dates back to 1976, when its former competitor Price Club was founded in San Diego, California.[10][11][12] As of March 2021[update], Costco has 804 warehouses worldwide:[1] 558 in the United States (including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico), 103 in Canada, 39 in Mexico, 29 in the United Kingdom, 27 in Japan, 16 in South Korea, 14 in Taiwan, 13 in Australia, 4 in Spain, 1 in Iceland, 2 in France, and 1 in mainland China. Costco regularly opens new locations.[13] The company plans to open warehouses in 2022 for the first time in New Zealand,[14] and Sweden.[15]

History[edit]

Toronto, Ontario (Opened July 2019)

Price Club[edit]

Main article: Price Club

Costco's history began with Sol Price and his son, Robert, opening the first Price Club warehouse on July 12, 1976, on Morena Boulevard in San Diego, California. This gave birth to a new concept: a retail warehouse club. The Price family placed Price Club Warehouse #1 inside a series of old airplane hangars[11][12] previously owned by Howard Hughes; that warehouse, now known as Costco Warehouse #401, is still in operation today.[16]

Costco opens[edit]

James (Jim) Sinegal and Jeffrey H. Brotman[17] opened the first Costco warehouse in Seattle on September 15, 1983.[11] Sinegal had started in wholesale distribution by working for Sol Price at FedMart; Brotman, an attorney from an old Seattle retailing family, had also been involved in retail distribution from an early age. He began his retail involvement as a grocery bagger.[18] A second store opened in Portland in October, and a third in Spokane in December 1983.[8]

The "PriceCostco" merger[edit]

In 1993, Costco and Price Club agreed to merge operations themselves after Price declined an offer from Walmart to merge Price Club with their warehouse store chain, Sam's Club.[19] Costco's business model and size were similar to those of Price Club, which made the merger more natural for both companies.[12] The combined company took the name PriceCostco, and memberships became universal, meaning that a Price Club member could use their membership to shop at Costco and vice versa. PriceCostco boasted 206 locations generating $16 billion in annual sales.[11] PriceCostco was initially led by executives from both companies, but in 1994, the Price brothers left the company to form PriceSmart,[12][20] a warehouse club chain in Central America and the Caribbean unrelated to the current Costco.[21]

In 1997, Costco changed its name to Costco Wholesale Corporation, and all remaining Price Club locations were rebranded as Costco.[11][12]

Other company milestones[edit]

On April 26, 2012, CNBC premiered its documentary, The Costco Craze: Inside the Warehouse Giant.[22]

In 2014, Costco was the third largest retailer in the United States.[23] That year Costco announced plans to open an online store in China using Alibaba Group.[24]

Costco announced the opening of 29 new locations in 2016, the most in one year since 2007.[25][26] Span Construction, led by King Husein, has constructed almost all of Costco's buildings since 1989.[27]

On August 27, 2019, Costco opened its first Chinese location, in Shanghai. The popular attention which greeted the store's opening led to its opening day being cut short over safety concerns.[28]

Costco today[edit]

In the United States, Costco's main competitors operating membership warehouses are Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club.[29] Costco employs 254,000 full and part-time employees worldwide.[30][2] In 2016, Costco had 86.7 million members.[31] This increased to 90.3 million members in 2017.[32][31] and 94.3 million in 2018.[31] In 2019, Costco had 98.5 million members.[2] In 2020, Costco had 105.5 million members.[3]

Costco was the first company to grow from zero to $3 billion in sales in under six years.[11] For the fiscal year ending on August 31, 2012, the company's sales totaled $97.062 billion, with $1.709 billion net profit.[33] As of 2019[update], Costco is ranked #14 on the Fortune 500 rankings of the largest United States corporations by total revenue.[34] The ACSI (The American Customer Satisfaction Index) named Costco number one in the specialty retail store industry with a score of 84 in 2014.[35]

From December 2013, Costco's board of directors was chaired by co-founder Jeffrey H. Brotman and included James Sinegal, co-founder and director, and two officers of the company: president/CEO W. Craig Jelinek and CFO Richard A. Galanti. On August 1, 2017, Jeffrey Brotman died.[36] As of August 2017[update], James Sinegal and W. Craig Jelinek remained on the board. Jim Sinegal stepped down in 2018.[31]

International locations[edit]

Warehouses outside the U.S. are similar to the company's domestic locations, featuring generally identical layout, signage, and even parking lot markings.[citation needed] Food court menus are tailored to international tastes, with meat pies on offer in Australia; poutine in Canada and France; seafood-topped pizza in Asian locations; pastor taco-topped pizzas in Mexico; clam chowder in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan; plokkfiskur in Iceland; and jacket potatoes in the UK.[37] Additionally, Costco has led a strategic initiative to enhance the merchandise mix available at international warehouses by tailoring products to local tastes, offering a selection of both American and local products.

In Canada, it is a participant in the voluntary Scanner Price Accuracy Code managed by the Retail Council of Canada.[38]

Largest locations[edit]

In 2005, the world's largest Costco by square feet was located in Hillsboro, Oregon.[39] In 2015, Costco completed an expansion in Salt Lake City, making it the new largest Costco at 235,000 sq ft (21,800 m2).[40] In 2019, Costco opened its biggest store in Canada, in St. John's; the store is 182,000 sq ft (16,900 m2).[41]

In 2011, Costco's highest volume store was in Seoul, South Korea.[42] In 2018, Taiwan's Taichung ranked at the top in the number of members and was second in the world in sales volume, behind South Korea's Yangjae store in Seoul. Of the 13 Costco operations in Taiwan, three – Taichung, Neihu, and Chungho – ranked in the top 10 in the world in sales volume.[43]

Costco Business Centers[edit]

Costco Business Centers are warehouses similar to regular Costco warehouses, and are open to all Costco members, regardless of membership type. Their merchandise caters predominantly to enterprises, with a focus on small businesses. Business Centers do not carry most consumer items like clothing, jewelry, media, and tires, while carrying larger quantities and more options for the business products they do carry.[44] More than 70% of the items that can be acquired from a Costco Business Center cannot be found in a typical Costco store.[45] Some locations do have a food court, a gas station, or both. Unlike regular warehouses, most Costco Business Centers have a Print & Copy Center which provides printing professional services. They have large parking spaces for trucks and are capable of delivering goods to businesses in bulk quantities, with a delivery charge of $25 for orders that are below $250.[45] Costco Business Center operating hours are shorter than regular warehouses (usually opening at 7:00 am on Mondays to Saturdays and closed on Sundays), while discounts and coupons for Business Centers are issued separately from regular warehouses.[46][47]

Locations[edit]

As of March 2021[update], there are 20 Costco Business Centers in the United States, located in Orlando, Florida; Dallas, Texas; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Phoenix, Arizona; California (Commerce, Hawthorne, Hayward, North Hollywood, Sacramento, San Diego, South San Francisco, Ontario and Westminster); Denver, Colorado; Morrow, Georgia; Bedford Park, Illinois; Hackensack, New Jersey; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Washington (Lynnwood, and Fife).[48]

The first Costco Business Center outside the U.S. opened in Canada in Scarborough, Toronto in spring 2017.[49] In September 2020, the second Canadian Costco Business Centre opened in St. Hubert, Québec, near Montréal.[50]

Finances[edit]

For the fiscal year 2019, Costco reported earnings of US$3.659 billion, with an annual revenue of US$152.703 billion, an increase of 7.9% over the previous fiscal cycle. Costco's shares traded at over $205 per share, and its market capitalization was valued at over US$95.7 billion in October 2018.

Business model[edit]

Costco is a membership only warehouse which generates a majority of its revenue from retail sales and a small percentage from membership fees. Customers must buy memberships to access the warehouse and make purchases. This is executed through the direct sourcing and efficient inventory management techniques.[64]

Costco divides its business into three segments: United States Operations, Canadian Operations, and Other International Operations. These 3 business segments are reported by revenue and operating income.[65] Of the three, the United States Operations was the largest, followed by Canadian Operations.[64]

Sales model[edit]

The company's rule is that no regular item may be marked up more than 14% over cost, and no Kirkland Signature item may be marked up more than 15% over cost.[6] The company runs very lean, with overhead costs at about 10% of revenue and profit margins at 2%.[6] Costco's annual membership fees (US$60/year for Gold Star, US$120/year for Executive as of 2019[update])[66] account for 80% of Costco's gross margin and 70% of its operating income.[67]

If Costco feels the wholesale price of any individual product is too high, they will refuse to stock the product. For example, in November 2009, Costco announced that it would stop selling Coca-Cola products, because the soft-drink maker refused to lower its wholesale prices.[68] Costco resumed selling Coca-Cola products the following month.[69][70]

Although the brand engages in visible efforts to reduce costs, the stores themselves are expensive. In 2013, Costco spent approximately $80 million on each of the new stores it opened.[71] The cost is partly driven by the cost of real estate, as each new store means that they need enough space to support a building of approximately 150,000 square feet (14,000 m2) in size, a large parking lot, and often a gas station.[71]

Lighting costs are reduced on sunny days, as most Costco locations have several skylights. During the day, electronic light meters measure how much light is coming in the skylights and turn off an appropriate percentage of the interior lights. During an average sunny day, it is normal for the center section of the warehouse not to have interior lights in use.[72] The company has no public relations department and does not buy outside advertising.[6] A typical Costco warehouse carries only 3,700 distinct products, while a typical Walmart Supercenter carries approximately 140,000 products.[6]

Like many other retailers vertically integrating their food supply chains, Costco has brought in-house poultry production for their rotisserie chickens, which are a major driver of customer traffic and sales.[73][74][75] This is to allow keeping their pricing intact while maintaining a consistent quality control of its chickens as a result of annual growth of per-capita chicken consumption in the United States.[76][75]

Online shopping[edit]

Costco primarily focuses on getting members to come in to a warehouse for purchases, instead of ordering products online.[77] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Costco's online sales increased dramatically, with more online sales growth in 2020 than the previous 5 years combined.[78]

The company opened its online shopping site at Costco.com on April 17, 2001.[79] Costco.com is for United States members; costco.ca is for Canadian members, and other countries, such as Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan and the UK, each have their own online Costco shopping website.

Instacart offers Costco delivery in a select number of states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia.[80] No membership is needed to order from Costco on Instacart, but Instacart charges delivery fees and the prices may not necessarily be the same as in a Costco warehouse.

Similarly, in March 2017, Costco initiated a partnership with Shipt, an online grocery delivery service. Unlike Instacart, Shipt charges its own membership fee, $99 a year or $14 a month, in exchange for free delivery on orders over $35. As of November 2018[update], Shipt offers Costco delivery in select Florida markets.[81]

In October 2017, Costco launched same-day and two-day grocery delivery options for members.[82]

Products[edit]

Costco has a frequently changing inventory and is known for carrying products for a time, then discontinuing them or using them as seasonal products.[83] Over the years, Costco has gradually expanded its range of products and services. Initially, it preferred to sell only boxed products that could be dispensed by simply tearing the stretch wrap off a pallet.[citation needed] It now[when?] sells many other products that are more difficult to handle, such as art, books, caskets, clothing, computer software, fine wine, furniture, home appliances, home electronics, hot tubs, jewelry, perishable items (such as dairy, fresh baked goods, flowers, fresh produce, meat, seafood), solar panels, tires, and vacuum cleaners.[citation needed] Many warehouses also have gas stations, pharmacies, hearing aid centers, optometrists, eye and sunglass centers, photo processors, and tire garages.[citation needed] The produce items that require refrigeration are kept in a walk-in refrigerator, and several locations even have a walk-in refrigerator for dairy items.[citation needed]

Some locations have liquor stores, often kept separate from the main warehouse in order to comply with liquor license restrictions. In some states (such as Texas), the liquor store must be owned and operated by a separate company with separate employees.[84] In 2006, Costco lost a lawsuit against the state of Washington in which it was seeking to purchase wine directly from the producer, bypassing the state retail monopoly.[85] In Australia, Costco has to comply with regulations set by each state they choose to trade in;[86] their first store in the Australian state of Victoria benefits from some of the most liberal alcohol licensing laws in that country, with retailers permitted to sell alcohol on shelves within the store, in a manner similar to most European countries.[citation needed] In the Canadian province of Quebec, beer and wine are sold within the stores from pallets.[citation needed]

Kirkland Signature[edit]

Kirkland Signature logo

"Kirkland Signature" is Costco's private label. It is sold by Costco at their website and warehouses, and is trademarked by the company. Costco introduced Kirkland Signature as its private label in 1992, deriving the name from the location of Costco's then corporate headquarters, Kirkland, Washington (their headquarters later moved, roughly 12 miles (19 km), to Issaquah, Washington).[87] It accounts for almost a third of all Costco sales and is growing faster than Costco sales.[88] Many Kirkland Signature products are produced by the same manufacturers as their respective name brands. For example, Kirkland branded bottled water is produced by private label bottler Niagara Bottling,[89] and some of Kirkland's branded coffee is roasted by Starbucks.[90]

The idea for the private label was to provide the appearance of brand name quality products at discounted prices.[91] To counteract the consumer confidence problem common in store-name branding, Kirkland Signature occasionally employs co-branding. According to Costco, while consumers may be wary of same-store branding, they are less likely to be wary of brands that they are familiar with and trust.[92]

Publications[edit]

Costco Connection[edit]

Costco Connection is a magazine sent free to the Costco executive members; it can also be accessed online by anyone, free of charge.[93] Until the end of 2018, the magazine was known as The Costco Connection. But with the January/February 2019 issue, "the", the definite article was dropped from the name and now the magazine is known as just Costco Connection.

The magazine was established in 1987 as a newsprint publication and converted to a magazine in 1997.[94] It features articles which regularly tie into the corporation along with business, celebrity features, cooking, entertaining, health, home improvement, and social articles, as well as coupons and ads. MediaPost reports: "While about 90% of the magazine's advertising is co-op, increasingly national advertisers such as Procter & Gamble are buying space, notes Roeglin -- presumably because of the pub's gargantuan reach and the data it has on its subscribers (whose average household income is $156,000 a year). 'We see about 56% of our subscribers a month buy something at one of our stores based on something they've read in the magazine,' says Roeglin."[95] The magazine is one of the largest-circulation print monthly in the United States[95] and presently is the third in circulation figures in the United States after AARP The Magazine and AARP Bulletin.

Other publications[edit]

Costco also publishes the Costco Household Almanac, an annual edition started in 2007. The 200+ pages almanac carries a lot of helpful tips to Costco readers and carries ads from suppliers. Costco also publishes a cookbook series.

Services[edit]

Concierge service[edit]

Costco offers a free "concierge" service to members who purchase electronics, to help answer questions regarding setup and use and avoid potential returns due to not understanding how to use the products.[96]

Costco Auto Program[edit]

In 2020, Costco Auto Program Approved Dealerships sold nearly 700,000 vehicles to Costco members.[97] Costco Auto Program regularly teams up with various automobile manufacturers to offer special deals to customers, e.g., Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Audi, Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Honda, Subaru and many more during the past five years.[98][99] MSN reports, Costco members saved an average of $1,100 to $1,200 off the average transaction price for their vehicle in their local market.[100]KSAT.com says it's simple to use Costco Auto Program. All you have to do is go to the Costco Auto Program webpage and you can browse the available vehicles, calculate monthly payments, and read reviews. You can also call the company’s customer-service line to have an employee walk you through the process over the phone. There are a variety of vehicle segments, including sedans, sports cars, SUVs, trucks, and crossovers.[101]

Once you provide your contact info and Costco membership number, you can go to participating dealership and you can buy or lease the vehicle with the Costco discount.[101]

In addition, members are also able to get a 15% discount on parts, service, and accessories at participating service centers.[101]

Costco Auto and Home Insurance[edit]

Costco has an agreement with CONNECT, powered by American Family Insurance, for auto insurance, home insurance and umbrella insurance.[102]

Costco business services[edit]

On March 9, 2005, NOVA Information Systems (NOVA) partnered with Costco to market and support payment processing services to Costco Canada's Business Executive Members.[103]

Costco acts as an investment broker and travel agent.

Costco photo services[edit]

Costco Photo Center is a multi-functional photography printing service offering photo items through its website, costcophotocenter.com. The website provides free unlimited digital file storage with a current membership. Prior to February 14, 2021, in-store photo centers offered many services such as same day photo printing (on select sizes/material) and online order pickup. In-store service/pickup is no longer offered, as all in-store photo centers closed permanently on February 14, 2021.

In December 2005, Costco signed an agreement with PhotoChannel Networks Inc., whereby Costco could deploy the PNI Digital Media Platform to offer online photo printing for Costco members through the website.[104]

Prior to May or June 2010, Costco had an agreement with Mypublisher.com for custom book and calendar publishing.[citation needed] Photo-books and calendars are now processed through multiple external vendors.[citation needed] Canvases are processed and printed by Your Photo on Canvas (ypoc.com), a Costco exclusive vendor.

On July 17, 2015, Costco disabled their online photo site.[105] In common with other retailers,[106] there is currently[when?] no confirmation about whether hackers had stolen Costco customers' photographs or data. As of August 1, 2015[update], Costco was estimating the website might return in mid-August, after a four-week outage.[107]

On January 13, 2021, Costco announced that it would permanently be closing the Photo Centers in all its locations by February 14, 2021. Many of the services are still available for home/business shipping, though in-store ink refills and passport photography were discontinued.[108]

Costco Optical[edit]

Costco Optical ranks as the fifth-largest optical company in the US, as of 2015[update].[109]Optometrists working at Costco locations will see patients without Costco memberships,[110] although a membership is required to fill a prescription at the optical department.[111]

Costco Travel[edit]

Costco Travel is a wholly owned subsidiary of Costco Wholesale and offers leisure travel to Costco members of the United States and Canada.[112] The program was established in 2000 as a service to Costco members. Costco Travel's offices are located in Issaquah, Washington, adjacent to Costco's corporate headquarters. Costco Travel employs over 700 travel professionals, all of them Costco employees.[citation needed]

The program offers vacation packages to the Caribbean, Europe, Florida, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Mexico, and the South Pacific.[113] Other products include car rentals, cruises, guided vacations, and theme park packages. Select products feature additional benefits for Costco Executive Members.[citation needed]

The program is marketed directly to Costco members through various Costco avenues, including the Travel Guide to Savings (found in all U.S. Costco warehouses) and in the Travel section of Costco.com.[citation needed]

Food service[edit]

If you raise the [price of the] effing hot dog, I will kill you.

Jim Sinegal to Craig Jelenik, when Jelenik suggested increasing the price of the hot dog.[114]

Most, if not all, Costco locations have a food court.[115] They can be indoors or outdoors,[116] but the menu is essentially the same: hot dog with drink (one of the most popular items), pizza, frozen yogurt/ice cream, Pepsico beverages, baked items, and sandwiches.[117] Sometimes, items are added to the menu seasonally. Costco offers a quarter-pound 100% beef hot dog and 20 US fluid ounces (590 ml) drink (with refills) for US$1.50, the same price since 1985. Some US locations also offer Polish sausage or bratwurst in addition to hot dogs, at the same $1.50 price.[118][119][120] In Australia, the hot dog is made of pork and is sold with a large soda for AUD$1.99. In Canada, the price for a hot dog and soda with refills is C$1.50.[121] In Mexico, the hot dog is made of 100% beef and includes a drink (with refills) for MXN$35. In the UK, the hot dog is also made from beef and customers also get a drink (with refills) for £1.50. Costco sold more than 137 million quarter-pound (113 g) hot dogs in its food courts in 2017.[120] In Taiwan and Japan, the hot dog is made of pork as well.[122]

As of January 2021, cheese or pepperoni pizza (along with pre-ordering of full pizzas to take home), chicken bakes, ice cream (vanilla), ice cream sundae (vanilla, with very berry or chocolate sauce toppings), fruit smoothies, latte freeze (without chocolate), mocha freeze (with chocolate), and twisted churros (in select stores) are offered at all United States locations. Some food court items are only available in certain countries. For example, the bulgogi bake and mango boba tea are only available in Australia, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan;[123]poutine is only available in Canada. There are, however, temporary menu items available exclusively in several countries, like the pastor taco-topped pizzas in Mexico.[124][125] The nutrition data for the Costco Food Court items is posted online and in store.

Past menu items include veggie and combo pizza, frozen yogurt (chocolate, vanilla, or swirl), beef bake, turkey provolone sandwiches, chicken Caesar salads, beef brisket sandwiches, organic beef-based cheeseburgers, beef chili with beans, and in some locations, gelato.

Chicken Caesar Salad No Longer Offered
Chicken Bake Replaced with factory-made item of same name, no longer hand-made in store (at most locations)
Diced Onion (topping) No Longer Offered
Sauerkraut (topping) No Longer Offered
Deli Mustard (condiment) No Longer Offered
Relish (condiment) Offered in select locations, expected to resume at all locations (no time period for return)

Due to slow sales, in 2009, the pretzel was replaced by the churro.[126] In April 2013, Pepsi replaced all Coca-Cola fountain drinks at U.S. locations because Coke had raised its prices; this helped keep the hot dog combo with soda at its original US$1.50 price.[127]

In select Costco food courts, Costco was selling cheeseburgers for a limited time to experiment sales. The cheeseburger was not successful, and never spread to more than a few locations.[128][needs update]

In early 2020 (due to the Coronavirus outbreak), many locations suspended all food court operations within the warehouse, opening them up weeks later to a limited take-out only menu and replacing fountain sodas with canned beverages. Many locations have had their seating area removed.[129][130] As of January 2021, all United States locations are open for partial service (with a changed menu). Payment card-only self-checkout systems have also been added to the food courts, allowing employees to focus solely on serving, and removing the exchange of paper and coin money. Seating was also restored in many locations.

Costco credit card[edit]

On April 1, 2016, in US, Citigroup became the exclusive issuer of Costco's branded credit cards. Prior to that, Costco credit cards had been issued by American Express since 2001, and Costco accepted only American Express cards for credit transactions. After the switch of its co-branded cards to Citi, Costco ceased accepting AmEx and began accepting Visa. AmEx cited the reason for the split that Costco was asking for lower transaction fees than AmEx was willing to grant.[131][132][133] In Canada, Costco ended its AmEx relationship in 2014, and starting in 2015,[134] it partnered with Capital One Mastercard for branded credit cards.[135] In 2020, Capital One announced it would be ending the partnership in late 2021.[136] It was announced that beginning in March 2022, Costco will begin it's partnership with CIBC Mastercard.[137] Costco branded credit cards from both issuers also serve as alternate Costco membership cards, with a customized reverse side containing membership info.[138]

Costco Audiobook App[edit]

In March 2021, Costco started selling audiobooks and launched a corresponding iOS and Android app to listen to purchases.[139] The app is free, however the books are exclusive to Costco members. The retailer sells audiobooks in bundles grouped by genre or author, with prices ranging from $5 to $50. Audiobooks are currently only available at U.S. locations.[140]

Employee rights[edit]

While some former Price Club locations in California and the northeastern United States are staffed by Teamsters,[141] the majority of Costco locations are not unionized, although there seemed to be a move in 2012 to unionize some locations in Canada.[142] The Teamsters claim that over 15,000 Costco employees are union members.[143] The non-union locations have revisions to their Costco Employee Agreement every three years concurrent with union contract ratifications in locations with collective bargaining agreements. The Employee Agreement sets forth such things as benefits, wages, disciplinary procedures, paid holidays, bonuses, and seniority. The Employee Agreement is subject to change by Costco at any time and offers no absolute protection to the workers. As of March 2021[update], non-supervisory hourly wages ranged from $16.00 to $27.75 in the U.S., $16.00 to $28.70 in Canada, and £9.75 to £13.90 in the United Kingdom. In the U.S. as of 2005[update], eighty-five percent of Costco's workers had health insurance, compared with less than fifty percent at Walmart and Target.[144] Health benefits include coverage through Aetna, remote primary care through Teladoc, second opinions and clinical navigation by Grand Rounds, and wellness coaching by Omada.[citation needed]

In February 2021, Costco announced that it would be raising the starting rate for its hourly store workers in the United States to $16 an hour. Costco has been actively raising their minimum wage starting with $14 during 2018, and into $15 during 2019. They further add that 20% of their hourly employees will be subject to the minimum wage change.[145]

Contractors[edit]

Product-demonstration (e.g., food samples) employees work for an independent company. In the western U.S., the company is called Warehouse Demo Services, Kirkland, Washington.[146] Costco also uses Club Demonstration Services (CDS), based in San Diego, California.[147] Demonstration employees receive a pay and benefit package that is less than that of Costco employees. As of August 1, 2017[update], demonstrations/samples are provided by CDS in Canada.[148]

Public health[edit]

Following the COVID-19 outbreak, the first Costco store in Perth, Australia, unexpectedly opened on March 19, 2020, without an opening ceremony and earlier than its planned time of 8:00AM due to high demand, especially for toilet paper products, to ease panic buying in mainstream supermarkets in Australia, although toilet paper was limited to only one per transaction. Carts and other objects were cleaned regularly to minimize the risk of contracting the virus.[citation needed]

As of March 6, 2020, Costco contractor CDS has temporarily stopped providing free food samples in several Costco stores globally amid public health concerns regarding COVID-19.[149]

On December 23, 2020, a Costco store in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, was forced to temporarily close after the store ignored restrictions on store capacity. The following day the entire state was put on Red alert following a sharp increase in COVID-19 infections in the state; Cuernavaca was the municipality most severely effected.[150]

Discontinued concepts[edit]

Costco Home[edit]

The first Costco Home warehouse opened in 1983, and was rebuilt / expanded in 2002, in Seattle.[151] The warehouse's concept was to combine the value, setting and members-only elements of Costco's warehouse clubs with the product array one would find at an upscale home store, such as Fortunoff or Crate & Barrel. The Costco Home warehouses sold furniture, housewares, kitchen products and accessories from higher-end brands such as Lexington, Ralph Lauren and Waterford[152] in a warehouse-club setting. Costco claimed that, similar to its main warehouses, it accepted lower margins in return for greater volume with minimal overhead.

Over time, the concept was adjusted to include home electronics, some major appliances, office furniture, and a large selection of outdoor furniture and window treatments. Costco also partners with Glentel subsidiary WIRELESS etc. to sell mobile phones and plans in Canada and Wireless Advocates in the US.[citation needed]

On April 2, 2009, the company announced that it would be abandoning its Costco Home concept, closing the two existing stores in Kirkland, Washington and Tempe, Arizona on July 3, 2009, and abandoning plans for a third store on the West Coast.[153] The company cited cutbacks in consumer spending on home products and its interest in focusing on its core business as the main reasons.

Controversies[edit]

In 2010, Mercy for Animals conducted an undercover investigation at Buckeye Veal Farm, a veal supplier to Costco.[154] Immediately following the investigative release, Costco adopted a policy against purchasing veal from producers that use the crate-and-chain production method.[155] The case prompted Ohio lawmakers to vote in favor of a veal crate phase-out in the state.[156]

In 2012, Mercy for Animals conducted another undercover investigation of a pork supplier to major retailers such as Costco, Walmart, Safeway, Kroger, and Kmart.[157] Before the public release of the investigation, Costco announced they would begin requiring their pork suppliers to phase out gestation crates.[158][159]

In 2014, The Guardian reported that Costco is a client of Charoen Pokphand Foods. Over six months, The Guardian traced down a supply chain from slave ships in Asian waters to leading producers and retailers. Costco has published a statement saying it has had a supplier code of conduct since 1999 which does not allow this practice, and that independent auditors check for violations regularly.[160][161][162][163]

In 2015, The Humane Society of the United States conducted an undercover investigation at an egg supplier to Costco.[164] An undercover worker at Hillandale Farms, a major egg supplier to Costco, filmed conditions in which egg-laying hens lived in tiny, wire cages.[165] Following the investigations, several celebrities including Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling publicly wrote to Costco to address this issue.[166] Following efforts by animal protection nonprofits including The Humane League,[167] Costco released an updated commitment to source exclusively cage-free eggs in its operations.[168]

In 2016, a follow up to Costco's shift to cage-free eggs by animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) reported cannibalism and high mortality at a cage-free Costco egg supplier.[169][170] Costco denied the allegations, but the video sparked a discussion about animal welfare problems continuing to exist at cage-free egg farms.[169] Writing in The Huffington Post, DxE co-founder Wayne Hsiung argued that the new investigation, rather than suggesting that Costco should keep birds in cages, indicated that hens should have the right not to be raised for food or kept on farms at all.[171]

In August 2017, a federal judge ordered a "deceptive" Costco to pay Tiffany & Co. $19.4 million for misleading consumers into thinking they could buy legitimate Tiffany merchandise at warehouse club prices.[172][173]

Costco was criticised in 2019 by the Natural Resources Defense Council and Sumofus for using virgin Canadian boreal forest to make its toilet paper. NRDC says that over the last twenty years, 28 million acres of Canadian boreal forest have been cut down to make toilet paper.[174][175]

In September 2020, CBS News reported that Costco has stopped selling Palmetto Cheese after the owner of the pimento cheese brand called Black Lives Matter a "terror organization." Costco posted a note to the item in their Myrtle Beach location indicating that the item will not be reordered, and over 120 Costco's throughout the US will no longer be carrying the item.[176]

In October 2020, Costco dropped Chaokoh coconut milk over the allegations of forced monkey labor. PETA accused the manufacturer, Theppadungporn Coconut Co., of using forced monkey labor, finding cruelty to monkeys at their farms and facilities. Ken Kimble, Costco's Vice President of Corporate Food and Sundries, stated Costco has launched an investigation regarding the issue and have ceased purchasing from the supplier/owner of the brand Chaokoh condemning the use of monkey labor. Kimble also stated that Costco will continue to monitor the implementation of the harvest policies and once satisfied will resume purchasing.[177]

In December 2020, Costco announced plans to disuse caged eggs throughout its operations worldwide.[178] It became the first US retailer to issue a global policy on the confinement of animals in its supply chain.[179] Josh Dahmen, Costco financial planning and investor relations director also said that "We are in the process of making that transition to cage-free eggs. We will continue to increase the percentage over time, with a goal of eventually getting to 100%."[180]

Costco vs. Sam's Club: What's the Difference?

Wholesaler retailers Costco and Sam's Club are renowned for their competitively low prices, bulk products, and no-frills shopping experience. Both sell pretty much everything imaginable in a warehouse setting. At first glance, it can be difficult to determine which of the two is the better option.

These two bulk retailers shelve a similar range of products at similar prices and have a more or less equal number of stores distributed throughout the country—as well as their own respective online ecommerce platforms. They also both require customers to pay membership fees to shop with them, which helps to boost revenues, cover costs, and create store loyalty.

In this article, we'll look at how the business models of Costco and Sam's Club are alike while also breaking down how they differ, including in terms of prices, locations, and brand selection.

    Key Takeaways

    • Costco and Sam's Club have very similar business models.
    • Costco is a publicly traded company, while Sam's Club is a subsidiary of Walmart.
    • Costco's membership fees are more expensive, but its prices are slightly lower—thanks in part to its private branded products, such as Kirkland.
    • Costco has more stores worldwide, but Sam's Club has more stores in the U.S.
    • Costco's stores are almost 9% larger on average based on square footage.

    Costco

Costco is considered the original bulk retailer, opening its first location in San Diego in 1976. Since then, it's been selling bulk goods through numerous warehouse-style stores, cornering the market in many states.

    Locations

Costco had 815 stores worldwide at the end of its fiscal year (FY) 2021 (ended Aug. 29, 2021), with 564 of them located in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The company has been aggressively opening new warehouse stores over the years, including in FY 2021 when it opened 22 of them.

There are 131 Costco stores located in California alone. Other heavily represented states include Texas (35), Washington (32), and Florida (28), while four states have no Costco stores—Maine, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Costco also has stores outside the U.S., including in Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, and other countries.

At the end of their respective 2021 fiscal years, Costco had 564 stores in the U.S., while Sam's Club had 599.

    Membership fees

Costco offers two membership tiers: Gold Star and Gold Star Executive. The Gold Star membership is $60 a year and offers access to all its stores and two membership cards, while the Gold Star Executive membership costs $120 per year and includes additional perks such as a 2% cash-back reward (up to $1,000) on all Costco and Costco Travel purchases, discounts on numerous Costco services, and home delivery of the Costco Connection Magazine.

It's worth noting that Costco also offers a business-focused membership This includes two tiers as well: Business and Business Executive. The Business level is $60 a year and includes the benefits individuals enjoy, as well as the ability to purchase for resale. For double that price, at $120, the Business Executive level adds some extras, including a 2% cash-back reward (of up to $1,000) on purchases as well as other benefits similar to those the Gold Star Executive package offers.

    Benefits and perks

Costco membership provides access to a vast array of different products and services, including gas, pharmacies, car rental, and optical centers, often at lower-than-normal prices. For business customers, Costco offers additional third-party services too, such as payment processing, health insurance, and bottled water delivery.

Costco also has a credit card for members. The card is co-branded with Citi and offers 4% cash-back on the first $7,000 spent on fuel per year (1% after that), 3% on restaurants and travel, 2% on all other Costco purchases, and 1% on all other purchases—the co-branded card offered by Costco and Citi can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted.

Finally, it's worth noting that Costco sells more private branded goods than Sam's Club does. As a shopper, you'll likely find more brand-name items in Sam's Club. However, Costco offers its popular private brand Kirkland in its stores. Kirkland items are often cheaper than most other products, but they're still made by big-name companies, such as Starbucks, Duracell, and Kimberly-Clark. Most Costco stores also offer a larger selection of organic produce than Sam's Club.

Costco's private brand products, such as Kirkland, are cheaper than name-brand products but are made by many well-known companies, such as Starbucks, Perrigo, Duracell, and Kimberly-Clark.

    Financials

Costco is a publicly traded company operating under the ticker symbol COST with a market value of roughly $223 billion as of Nov. 11, 2021. It has several smaller subsidiaries, such as Costco Travel and Kirkland brand products, and primarily focuses on its brick-and-mortar and online retail operations.

In FY 2021, net sales, which excludes membership fees, came in at $192 billion, up from $163 billion in the previous FY, while net income rose 25% in the period to just over $5 billion. Financially, Costco is well positioned, too, with a healthy enough balance sheet to weather a downturn and comfortably continue investing in its business where it sees fit.

    Sam's Club

Walmart's Sam's Club is nearly as old as Costco, opening its first store in 1983 in Midwest City, Okla. As far as business models go, they're very similar—both sell bulk items to customers that pay for membership. However, there are a few things that separate the two retailers, including store locations, the types of brands they sell, membership fee costs, and extra perks.

    Locations

Sam's Club operates 599 stores across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. However, unlike Costco, it has not been aggressively expanding, keeping its store count relatively steady over the past few years.

The heaviest concentration of Sam's Club stores is in Texas, which is home to 82 of them, followed by Florida with 46, and California with 29. The Walmart subsidiary cannot be found everywhere in the country, though—there are no Sam's Club stores in Alaska, Massachusetts, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.

    Membership fees

Like Costco, Sam's Club offers two membership levels. The first is called Club, which at $45 per year includes access to all its warehouse clubs as well as the ability to add additional cards. Then there's the higher-tier Plus membership for $100 a year, which comes with all the benefits of Club plus other perks—2% cash back on certain transactions (for up to $500 a year), free shipping, early store access hours, and access to pharmacy and optical services. Overall, both of Sam's Club's membership tiers are cheaper than Costco's.

    Benefits and perks

For a relatively small fee, Sam's Club members gain access to price-competitive stores stocking pretty much everything. For higher-tier membership, there are also discounts on certain goods and services, such as eyeglasses, fuel, travel, and branded drugs.

Sam's Club offers a credit card, too. The company's Mastercard is issued by Synchrony Bank and works everywhere credit cards are accepted. The perks of the Mastercard include 5% cash back on the first $6,000 in fuel purchases per year, then 1% thereafter. In addition, the card offers 3% cash back on dining and takeout and 1% on all other purchases.

    Financials

Sam's Club generated $64 billion in net sales during its 2021 FY, one-third of what Costco recorded. However, Sam's Club's parent company, Walmart, has a $414 billion market cap as of Nov. 11, 2021, which is nearly double Costco's total dollar market value.

In its FY 2021, which ended Jan. 31, 2021, Sam's Club posted an 8.7% rise in net sales and a 16.1% increase in operating income. In the prior FY, before the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the nation, these same metrics were up 1.6% and 8.0%, respectively.

Key Differences Between Costco and Sam’s Club

Costco and Sam's Club operate very similar businesses, although there are several differences that separate the two and make each one unique. To start, Costco is a publicly traded company that trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol COST. Sam's Club, on the other hand, is a subsidiary of Walmart, which trades under the ticker WMT on the New York Stock Exchange.

Costco's membership fees are more expensive than Sam's Club, albeit not by much—it's only $15 and $20 a year more for the basic tier and top tier, respectively. Meanwhile, product-wise, Sam's Club offers more name brands, while Costco stocks more private brands and organic goods.

In terms of location, Costco has a greater international presence and more stores than Sam's Club does, although not in the U.S. California is the state with the most Costco stores, while Sam's Club's biggest presence is in Texas. Both retailers have also refrained from opening stores in some states, although only one, Rhode Island, has neither a Costco nor Sam's Club.

Costco has more stores across the globe, is expanding rapidly, and generally offers cheaper prices than Sam's Club does, although the latter charges slightly less for membership, has a bigger presence in the U.S., and stocks more name brands.

For now, Costco is comfortably beating Sam's Club in the sales category, generating about three times more in revenues, although that bigger top line is perhaps to be expected given its higher global store count. Costco, has slightly larger stores, too, with an average of 146,000 square feet, versus Sam's Club's average of 134,000.

One clear takeaway is that Costco appears to be growing faster, from both a store count and revenue perspective. Sam's Club closed several stores a couple of years ago—roughly 10% of its store count at the time. Meanwhile, Costco has been on a steady run of net store openings.

Which One Is Better, Costco or Sam's Club?

That depends on personal preferences, such as the types of products you buy and which of these two retailers is within reasonable driving distance of your home.

Both companies have similar business models, sell comparable goods and services, and only grant access to paying members. Where they mainly differ, other than location, is in the brands they may sell, additional perks, and annual membership fees—Sam’s Club costs slightly less. In the end, it’s up to each individual consumer to decide which one they prefer.

Does Costco or Sam's Club Have Better Prices?

Overall, the prices at Costco tend to be cheaper. However, Sam's Club has a greater selection of name-brand products and a cheaper membership fee.

Can I Use My Costco Membership at Sam's Club?

No, Costco memberships only work at Costco stores and online at Costco.com. The same goes for Sam's Club, where membership is limited to Sam's Club's stores and ecommerce platform.

Is Sam’s Club Cheaper Than Walmart?

Overall, Sam's Club is cheaper per unit of product. However, with Sam's Club, you're spending more overall because you're buying more of a product (i.e., in bulk). With Sam's Club, you might spend 45 cents per roll of toilet paper, but you're buying 45 rolls, so you're spending $20.25. With Walmart, you can spend $8.57 for the same toilet paper, but you're getting 12 rolls, coming out to 71 cents per roll.

    The Bottom Line

The typical customer for warehouse retailers like Costco and Sam’s Club are those who like to save money buying in bulk. Buying this way does not always translate well to online shopping, however, because delivering bulk items can be cumbersome.

Shopping at warehouse locations can be prohibitive for customers who don’t have the storage space (e.g., freezer size to accommodate buying in bulk) or money for what is a more expensive shopping trip, versus Walmart, for example. The average transaction total is higher at bulk warehouse retailers compared to discount retailers because—although you’re getting cheaper per-unit prices—you’re buying more overall.

For many shoppers, it'll come down to which store is closer to their home. Other than that, there's not much difference in terms of membership prices or product prices. Part of choosing between the two will come down to the shopping experience (e.g., as a Costco consumer you can get a $1.50 hot dog combo).

Of course, not everyone will be familiar with these stores and may understandably want to test them out before making a choice and paying for membership. With Sam's Club, this can be achieved by registering for a 90-day free trial membership. Unfortunately, Costco doesn't provide such an option. If you want to check out one of its stores, you'll have to tag along with a member or hope nobody asks for a card on the day you turn up.

Costco has always been known as a great place to work, especially for part-time employees. But I thought it was time to take a deep dive into exactly what employee benefits and discounts Costco offers their workers. Perks that just might sway your decision one way or another when deciding to interview or accept a job offer.

9 Costco Employee Benefits, Perks, and Discounts You Gotta Know

Before we break it all down, let’s get some basic questions out-of-the-way that several commenters were curious about.

How old do you have to be to work at Costco? – Their minimum age for employment is 18 years old.

Does Costco hire seniors?Yes. Departments where Costco hires senior citizens often include the pharmacy, optical, and member services.

Is there a required retirement age? – There is NO required retirement age at Costco.

    1. Solid Health & Dental Insurance

If you’ve worked for Costco for at least 180 consecutive days, and work more than 24 hours per week, you’re eligible for health benefits.

You actually get to choose your own provider and out-of-pocket costs are low compared to the competition.

Also, since there is a pharmacy inside the warehouse, you get access to a solid in-house prescription drug plan.

Co-pays are $5 for generic drugs and 5-15% for for brand name medications.

Plus, all employees get access to a low cost dental plan which covers teeth cleaning and some basic procedures like cavity fillings.

    2. Generous 401(k) Match

Costco offers a 50% match on your 401(k) contributions up to a maximum of $500 per year.

So you’d be smart to add $1,000 a year (if you can) as you’ll maximize this benefit.

In this scenario, Costco will add $500 to your 401(k) if you’re able to add $1,000 per year. Not too shabby.

Costco will also contribute a percentage of your pay regardless of what you add to your 401(k). This kicks in after you’ve been employed for a year and starts at 3% and increases periodically.

Caution: If you quit working at Costco before year 5 you’ll lose a portion of what they contributed but you keep ALL of your contributions.

    3. Does Costco Offer an Employee Discount?

No, employees pay the same price as everyone else.

But…when I asked a Costco employee about this, she told me that one nice perk they do get is the ability to shop after hours when the store is empty saving a bunch of time.

After all, time is money, right?

    4. Salary Starting at $17/Hour

According to this Today Show article the starting hourly wage at Costco has recently been raised to $17 per hour.

The $17/hour is for Service Assistants while the starting wage for Service Clerks is $18/hour.

Wanna be a meat cutter? You’ll start at $18.50/hour.

For reference this is a higher wage compared to other “big box” employers.

Factor in Sunday shifts and this wage rises significantly. More on that later.

Also, in case you were wondering, hourly Costco employees “top out” at about $26 – $28/hour and it takes 6-8 years to get there.

    5. Their Paid Time Off (PTO) Policy Doesn’t Suck

Paid Time Off is a big deal and this Costco benefits is nothing to scoff at.

After you’ve been employed for 1 year and have accrued at least 2,000 paid hours, you’ll start to accumulate paid time off.

Specifically, PTO is earned based on years of employment and breaks down like this:

    – 1 year of employment: 1 week PTO

    – 2-4 years: 2 weeks PTO

    – 5-9 years: 3 weeks PTO

    – 10-14 years: 4 weeks PTO

    – 15+ years: 5 weeks PTO

If you work less than 2,000 hours your PTO is pro-rated accordingly.

Also, it’s important to note that you can ONLY roll-over your PTO to the following year and it can’t be carried over from year to year.

Costco WANTS you to use your vacation hours…so use it before you lose it.

    6. A Free Turkey? Um, OK.

According to this Business Insider article, employees at Costco get a free turkey at Thanksgiving.

Cool gesture but not exactly the same as a real Christmas bonus, more like a “Jelly of the Month Club” type bonus.

Apparently employees can donate the turkey to a charity if they don’t want to take it home.

    7. Earn “Time and a Half” on Sunday

You can really rack up a fat paycheck if you regularly work on Sunday as you’ll earn time and a half.

So if you normally earn $15/hour that’ll get bumped to $22.50 which is a nice pay increase.

Doing some quick math, your weekly hourly rate jumps up to $16.50 per hour by working on Sunday.

See Also: Amazon Employee Discount: The Nuts & Bolts So You Can Take Advantage

    8. You’ll Get 4 Free Memberships

Also, as a Costco employee you’ll get 4 free annual memberships.

One membership for you and 3 for anyone of your choosing.

    Choose wisely young padawan.

    9. Opportunities to Move Up

From talking to multiple Costco employees it seems unanimous that your success depends largely on your work ethic and how badly you want to move up with the company.

Work hard and you’ll move up. Heck, shoot for a supervisor position, then a store manager.

Your success with Costco is limited only by YOU and your attitude.

    “Bonus Time” at Costco

I also got the skinny (kinda) on how bonuses for Costco employees work.

    Here’s what I know so far…

    – Bonus Every 6 Months: According to this thread on Indeed.com, an employee talked about getting a $2,500 to $3,500 bonus every 6 months depending on years with Costco.

    – Annual Bonus up to $5,500: According to PayScale.com some employees get an annual bonus up to $5,500. Particularly the in-house optician (eye doctor).

Help me out in the comments if you have first hand knowledge of how Costco bonuses work.

Ask the Reader: Do you work for Costco Wholesale? What did I miss? Let me know in the comments, thanks.

This makes it easier than pulling out all the tickets. The Cast Member will confirm each ticket with the picture associated with it and then guests may enter the parks.

Tickets can be deleted but some require help from a guest relations Cast Member (usually annual passes). Once the tickets have been used completely they will automatically disappear from the app.

FASTPASS services can be utilized from the app only if your have purchased MaxPass. MaxPass can be added to your tickets once they have been linked to the app following the instructions above.

Once there you’ll see the option to add MaxPass under each ticket. You can do them all at once if you have linked them all. Simply select which tickets you want to add MaxPass to and continue to payment.

Complete your check-out and MaxPass will be available instantly for every ticket you purchased it for.

As of 2020 MaxPass can now be purchased with your Disneyland tickets in advance to help you save time and money. Simply select the type of tickets you want, whether they are 1 park per day or Park Hopper, and look for the MaxPass logo.

These tickets will include MaxPass for every day you purchased your ticket. For example, if you purchased a 4-day Park Hopper you will receive 4 days of MaxPass. You no longer have to purchase it separately each day.

Once MaxPass is added you can start scheduling your fastpasses by clicking “Get FASTPASS with MaxPass” from the home screen of the app. Then select your party followed by which park you want the FASTPASS for. Now select the ride you want and the next available time. Confirm your selection and you’re done. You can use the MaxPass service for the entirety of the day.

Dining through the app can be done a few different ways. First, you can make dining reservations if you want to enjoy a sit-down restaurant such as the Blue Bayou. Simply click “Reserve Dining” from the home screen, choose your party size, the date you want to dine and then the restaurant.

Available times will be displayed and you can confirm them through the app. A credit card guarantee is required for every reservation.

Guests who want to do dining but not at a sit down can now order their food from quick service restaurants using the app. From the home screen simply click “Order Food,” choose your park and the restaurant you want to eat at.

Available times will pop-up and then you may start ordering. Once you’ve added all the food to your cart check-out and complete your order. Your screen will confirm your order and tell you when your food is ready to be picked up.

If you’re simply browsing to see what dining is available you can do this through the app as well.

Maps are available through the app to help you know where you are, where you want to go, attraction wait times, closures and of course when the parades, fireworks and other shows are.

The Disneyland app, combined with your discount Disneyland tickets (they used to be offered through Costco and are now offered through Undercover Tourist), is a very powerful tool to use on your trip.

    Costco Services

Costco opened its doors in 1983 in a suburb of Seattle Washington. It had just completed a merger with Price Club and was soon going to be the largest warehouse wholesaler in the world. The merger of Price Club and Costco led to an immediate growth and eventually a name change from PriceCostco to Costco Wholesale.

There are currently over 500 Costco’s in the United States with an additional 100 stores in Canada, some in Mexico, Europe and soon to be in China. Costco boasts more than 90 million members worldwide.

As members know, Costco sells everything in bulk at very high volumes. This allows them to essentially just put cases and packages of the product out for guests to purchase without having to unpackage much.

Many of their items sit on large shelves in big isles. As of 2016 Costco was the biggest seller of choice prime beef and organic foods in the world.

Although food and products are their main event, Costco also offers special services for members including insurance, optical, gas, photo, tire service, pharmacy and travel to name a few. Members who wish to save on any of these things only have to visit their local warehouse or Costco.com.

One thing Costco is known for is their sampling of food items throughout their stores. Members who are shopping can enjoy several sampling tables for new food items with the hopes of either finding new food items to purchase or a free lunch.

Costco’s travel services can be found online at costco.com where packages, cruises, honeymoons, hotels, car rentals and more can all be purchased. Theme parks including Disneyland and Walt Disney World can also be purchased through packages online. Pricing is usually better than what could be purchased directly with Disney. However, there are no options to purchase tickets only.

Guests can purchase a complete package including hotel and tickets for their Disneyland vacation. Usually the packages include some extras as well including free character dining or a Disney gift card. Guests will also receive lanyards, souvenir tickets, collectible pin and button and a Magical Extras Saving Card.

Members who are interested in purchasing packages should compare pricing to Get Away Today. They offer a best price guarantee on all their packages and will beat any price by $10. They also include free extras and over $400 in digital coupons for shopping and dining.

While Costco does have great pricing we know they can be beat.

    Costco Disneyland Tickets History

Purchasing Discounted Disneyland Tickets does not mean you’re getting less of a ticket in any way. In fact, the only thing that’s different is the additional savings. Our tickets still include Magic Morning Early Entry for tickets 3 days or more. They also include Fastpass, which is a free service included with any valid ticket.

You can also upgrade your Fastpass experience by adding MaxPass to your tickets. This new service allows you to make Fastpass reservations without having to show up at the attraction! Do it from anywhere in the park or even from one park to the other if you have a Park Hopper ticket. This new service is a time saver and is highly recommended to help you make the most of your day.

These Costco tickets started being sold in the warehouse in the early to mid 2000’s and could be found in the ticket and amusement park section of the warehouse. Guests could also purchase the tickets online via Costco.com.

Many times when the tickets were available they were at a special rate or included special gifts with them. At one point a $50 Disney gift card would be received with the purchase of a 4 day park hopper Costco Disneyland tickets.

For each ticket purchased this gift card could be received. On top of this the 4 day hopper ticket was also discounted below gate pricing. These tickets were very popular and tended to be sold out fairly often.

Costco also sold 3 and 4 day tickets below gate pricing when they weren’t offering a special gift offer with the tickets. Guests could purchase these in store at warehouses in Anaheim and other states including Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. We’re not sure how long this was offered but believe it was for several years.

At some point Costco stopped carrying Disneyland tickets, we think around 2013 or 2014. Local warehouses stopped getting them in and costco.com didn’t have them either. Up to this point we have not seen the return of the tickets. We also believe that they sold Walt Disney World tickets but also stopped carrying them.

What made the Costco tickets even better (outside of the savings) is that Executive members could receive a 2% reward from the purchase as well as an additional 2-4% on their Costco AMEX card. It was a lot of additional savings added to the purchase.

While these discount tickets were very popular, you did have to be a member to purchase them inside the warehouse or online. Once purchase though they could be used by anyone in your group. A Costco photo ID was not required at the parks once purchased.

Where to find Costco Disneyland Tickets

If you’re going to reach out to your local warehouse and purchase Disneyland Resort tickets be sure to follow these steps:

    1. Locate the nearest Costco warehouse. If you’re out of town, search for one on Google Maps or use Costco’s warehouse finder online.
    2. After arriving, look for the section of the store that carries beef jerky and popcorn. It is usually in this area that gift cards and theme park tickets are located. If you can’t find them, ask someone at guests services.
    3. Once you’ve located the stand, look for Disneyland Resort tickets. If Costco carries them, they will have cardboard cutouts for each ticket you want to purchase. Grab as many as you need and head to the registers.
    4. At the registers, let the cashier know you want to buy Costco Disneyland Tickets. They will have someone go to the back to get your actual tickets.
    5. Once purchased, you can take your tickets and head straight to the parks. No box office exchange is required so you can go straight to the park gates and enter.
    6. If none of the warehouses have them, you may want to consider purchasing them with us at our Best Price Guarantee. Additionally, we offer $400 in digital coupons and straight-to-the-gate delivery.

    Certain seasons for every ticket

Outside of your ticket options there are also certain seasons that you may want to purchase your tickets during. We always offer discounts on your Disneyland tickets, but special promotions and sales are run during certain times of the year. Typically Disney will raise their prices towards the end of February, so if you want to purchase at a cheaper price, buy January through mid-February for the rest of that year. Even if you are going to Disneyland in November, you can still buy those tickets in January.

The other season we recommend you purchase tickets during is end of April–May. Once spring break season is over, the traffic in Disney parks slows down significantly. During this time you can find special promotions like free days, adults at kids prices, and free character dining meals. It’s important to get the most out of your ticket purchase, but hurry as promotions last only as long as supplies last!

Lastly, let’s talk about crowd seasons. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out the slow seasons at Disneyland. Simply avoid these times and you’ll be just fine:

    • Spring breaks
    • Holidays
    • Major conventions
    • New ride and attraction debuts
    • Special events including runDisney races.

Crowd sizes decrease and it is easier to get onto rides quickly when avoiding busy seasons. One thing to note is park times do tend to be cut down when it’s not busy season. Keep that in mind as you plan off-season Disney trips. No time is perfect though; it is all based on personal preference. Summer is the busiest time of the year, with Christmas and New Years at the peak as well. Historically, New Year’s Eve and Day have been the busiest followed by Christmas Eve and Day.

With Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance opening on January 28th, 2020, tickets are going to be a hot commodity so purchase as far in advance as possible. If you’re planning a longer trip to enjoy this new land, which we highly recommend, you should check out Get Away Today’s 5th Day FREE offer. You’ll get your 5th Day Free when you purchase either a 4 Day Park Hopper or 4 Day 1 Park Per Day ticket. This offer isn’t limited to any specific package. You can purchase them separately or add them to a hotel to create a package.

Guests who plan to visit Disneyland in 2020 should be aware of a few things:

    1. It’s going to be very, very busy from the end of January through Spring Break. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is going to draw in the largest crowds for Galaxy’s Edge. This includes Disneyland fans as well as Star Wars fans. Keep this in mind if you’re planning a family vacation and are trying to avoid the crowds. Summer of 2020 won’t be the time to visit either!
    2. The nice thing about Costco Disneyland tickets is that they help you save money. Money that can be used to purchase MaxPass for your tickets. In order to survive summer 2020 at Disneyland, we’re banking on the MaxPass service. Guests who don’t add this service may find it much harder to schedule a Fastpass.
    3. Be sure to book your vacation early. Most hotels are going to raise their prices once an opening date is set. This means that you’ll want to find out as soon as possible when Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is opening and then book your room right away. Guests who delay will find themselves probably paying double or triple the price of a room.

So there you have it. All the information you need on purchasing Costco Disneyland tickets 2020.

Our tickets still include First hawaiian bank priority rewards credit card login Morning Early Entry for tickets 3 days or more.

These Costco tickets started being sold in the warehouse in the early to mid 2000’s and could be found in the ticket and amusement costco ca san diego go card section of the warehouse.

    4. At the registers, costco ca san diego go card the cashier know you want to buy Costco Disneyland Tickets.

One thing to note is six flags locations usa times do tend to be cut down when it’s not busy season.

With Star Wars: Rise of closest super walmart to me now Resistance opening on January 28th, 2020, tickets are going to be a hot commodity so purchase as far in advance as possible.

If you’re looking for more information on how to save at Disneyland be sure to check out our How to do Disneyland Cheap Guide. You’ll learn how to save on tickets, dining, car rentals, hotels, flights and more.
