Santander apologises for ‘technical problem’ that affected online and card payments
Santander has apologised for a “technical problem” which left some customers unable to make payments online or buy food at the supermarket on Saturday, although the bank said its services had returned to normal by the late evening.
Customers have reported problems with the bank’s telephone, branch, online and card services.
Consumer organisation Which? said some people had reported not being able to make payments for several hours.
The bank has advised customers they can access cash from other banks’ ATMs.
A statement on the bank’s website said: “We’re sorry a technical problem is still affecting our services.
“If you need help, some of our branches will be open until 6pm today and between 10am to 12pm on Sunday. Cash is available at other banks’ ATMs. Please check back here for further updates.”
It also tweeted: “We’re sorry that a technical problem is affecting our services, our teams are working hard to fix it.”
Gareth Shaw, head of money at Which? said: “These technical issues will be causing stress for many Santander customers – with people reporting that they have been unable to make online payments or in fifth 3rd bank phone number cases purchase food in their local supermarket.
“Customers can incur fines, penalties and fees when they’re not able to access their finances, so the bank must offer compensation to all those who have been impacted in this way.
“These problems demonstrate why it is vital that banks invest to ensure their systems are up to the task of protecting their customers’ accounts and maintaining the services they rely on.”
It is unclear how many customers were affected.
In a statement on Saturday night, Santander said all its banking services were back to working as normal. The statement continued: “We are very sorry for the inconvenience you’ve experienced today. If you need help, some of our branches will be open on Sunday from 10am to 12pm. We’ll publish a list of these tomorrow.”

FREETOWN — Every time Andy Wilkinson pulls into his driveway, he sees red.
It is the color of his Chevrolet Impala, but that is just the spark.
Seeing the car reminds him of how he got hooked and reeled in by an unscrupulous car dealer and his own financial innocence. It also makes him think of how Santander Bank made matters worse for him.
Plus, even though the car barely runs any more, it is still leaving tire tracks all over his credit.
Wilkinson is one of 2,000 car buyers in Massachusetts who stands to receive proceeds from Santander Bank in its $22 million settlement with the state over allegations of unfair lending. In Southeastern Massachusetts, the area including Fall River, Taunton and New Bedford, more than 150 people are involved in the settlement, officials say.
“We found that Santander, a leading player in the business of packaging and reselling subprime auto loans, funded unfair and unaffordable auto loans for more than 2,000 Massachusetts residents,” Attorney General Maura Healey said.
The attorney general’s investigation alleged Santander funded loans it knew would not be repaid or that were based on incorrect or inflated incomes.
The lawsuit, filed in Suffolk Superior Court, also alleged Santander’s internal auditors identified dealers who were submitting fraudulent loan applications but the bank continued doing business with those dealers.
For Wilkinson, problems began five years ago when he bought his new used car. He had been accepted as a medic into an Army unit that was shipping out to Iraq. He had to report to North Carolina.
“I had just finished paying off the loan on a Jeep Grand Cherokee,” he said. “I realized the Jeep would not be reliable enough to make the trip to North Carolina.”
So he went car shopping and found the Impala. He sat with the dealer and was told that, by trading in the Jeep, he would end up with a payment of $292 a month.
“Really, I fault myself,” Wilkinson said. “I had no idea what the interest rate was. Nothing. I just knew that $292 was a low monthly payment.”
It still is, five years later. He is paying and he was told the principal is $10,000 – more than what he borrowed.
“It is a never ending ordeal,” he said. “Every payment I make barely touches the principal.”
After his return from Iraq, Wilkinson was out of work for four months to repair a knee that was injured during his deployment. He asked for and says he was promised a deferment on payment from Santander. But when he went to resume payment, he learned the loan had been marked in default. He had to pay four months at once to avoid a repossession. His credit was trashed, he said.
He has repaired his credit. He and his wife bought a house, where they live with their two children. Wilkinson also bought a new Jeep to replace the Chevrolet, which stalls every 200 yards. He hopes to get the Chevrolet fixed so he can sell it and get it out of his life.
Wilkinson has no idea how much he will receive in the settlement or when he will get the money. A spokeswoman for Healey’s office said their lawyers are still processing the settlement money and hiring a trustee to distribute the cash.
It could take months.
Santander made the settlement without admitting fault.
A statement by the bank read: “In the last 18 months, we have established an Office of Consumer Practices to serve as an internal voice of the consumer and to examine, track and amazon prime video com the customer experience.”
The bank has also stepped up training to spot and deal with dealer misconduct, the statement read.
Not enough, Wilkinson said.
“I feel like Santander got off easy,” he said. “The whole point of the lawsuit was to force Santander to accept its mistake.
“But I just want to put this behind me.”

Attorney General Tong Announces Settlement with Santander
1,740 CT Residents Entitled to Restitution
(Hartford, CT) -- Attorney General William Tong joined a coalition of 34 attorneys general led announcing a settlement today with Santander Consumer USA Inc. (Santander) that includes approximately $550 million in relief for consumers with even more relief in additional deficiency waivers expected. The settlement resolves allegations that Santander violated consumer protection laws by exposing subprime consumers to unnecessarily high levels of risk and knowingly placing these consumers into auto loans with a high probability of default.
There are 1,740 Connecticut residents entitled to receive restitution. Consumers can get information on restitution here.
Today’s settlement stems from a multistate investigation of Santander’s subprime lending practices. In March 2015, the Illinois Attorney General’s office led the coalition in opening the investigation into the largest subprime auto financing company in the country after receiving an increase in consumer complaints related to subprime auto loans.
"For years, Santander put Connecticut borrowers at financial risk," Attorney General Tong said. "This settlement includes significant loan relief for customers as well as injunctive measures to assure that this kind of behavior won't happen again. The Office of the Attorney General will continue to protect Connecticut residents from financial institutions that play fast and loose with families' hard-earned income."
Based on the multistate investigation, the coalition alleges that Santander, through its use of sophisticated credit scoring models to forecast default risk, knew that certain segments of its population were predicted to have a high likelihood of default. Santander exposed these borrowers to unnecessarily high levels of risk through high loan-to-value ratios, significant backend fees, and high payment-to-income ratios. The coalition also alleges that Santander’s aggressive pursuit of market share led it to underestimate the risk associated with loans by turning a blind eye to dealer abuse and failing to meaningfully monitor dealer behavior to minimize the risk of receiving falsified information, including the amounts specified for consumers’ incomes and expenses. Finally, the coalition alleges that Santander engaged in deceptive servicing practices and actively misled consumers about their rights, and risks of partial payments and loan extensions.
Under the settlement, Santander is required to provide relief to consumers and, moving forward, is required to factor a consumer’s ability to pay the loan into its underwriting.
Santander will pay $65 million to the 34 participating states for restitution for certain subprime consumers who defaulted on loans between Jan. 1, 2010 and Dec. 31, 2019. For consumers with the lowest quality loans who defaulted as of December 31, 2019 and have not had their cars repossessed, Santander is required to allow them to keep their car and waive any loan balance, up to a total value of $45 million in loan forgiveness. Santander will also pay up to $2 million for the settlement administrator who will administer restitution claims, and pay an additional $5 million to the states.
The settlement also includes significant consumer relief by way of loan forgiveness. In all, Santander has agreed to waive the deficiency balances for certain defaulted consumers, with approximately $433 million in citi credit card login payment billdesk forgiveness of loans still owned by Santander, and additional deficiency waivers of loans that Santander no longer owns but is required to attempt to buy back.
Going forward, Santander cannot extend financing if a consumer has a negative residual income after taking into consideration a list of actual monthly debt obligations. Additionally, Santander is required to test all loans that default in the future to see if the consumer, at the time of origination, had a negative income. The test must include an amount for basic living expenses. If the loan is found to be unaffordable and the consumer defaulted within a certain amount of time, Santander is required to forgive that loan.
Santander is barred from requiring dealers to sell ancillary products, such as vehicle service contracts. Santander will also implement steps to monitor dealers who engage in income inflation, expense inflation, and power booking, and will impose additional documentation requirements on those dealers. Further, whereas Santander previously allowed these problematic dealers to waive documentation requirements on income and expenses, Santander no longer will allow such exceptions. If Santander has to use a default mortgage or rent payment value, the amount input must reasonably reflect the payment value for the geographic location. Finally, Santander will maintain policies and procedures for deferments, forbearances, modifications and other collection matters that all employees must follow.
Joining Attorney General Tong in the settlement led by Illinois Attorney General Raoul are the attorneys general of California, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington, who comprise the executive committee; as well as the attorneys general of Arizona, Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Santander went down locking hundreds of customers out of accounts
HUNDREDS of furious Santander customers struggled to log into their accounts this morning after the bank suffered an outage.
More than 1,000 customers could not log into their accounts through online banking and mobile app services from 5.30am this morning, according to complaints tracking website Downdetector.
However, the outage has since been fixed, Santander told The Sun - meaning you should be able to access your cash as normal.
Over half of customers were reporting problems logging into their mobile banking account, 24% could not get onto their online banking account and 23% had mobile app login issues.
Angry customers took to social media to complain about the service crisis, with many unable to make bank payment transfers or view their balance.
One said: "What's wrong with the app? Can't log on".
Another tweeted: "When will your app be fixed" while another commented: "Why is your app constantly down with [me] being stuck on the loading screen then [it] crashing!"
And another raged: "It happens that much I am considering moving banks."
A Santander spokesperson said: "We’re very sorry for the inconvenience while we fixed the issues some customers experienced earlier this morning.
"Our services are now available as usual but there may be delays to some card payments showing on customers’ accounts."
If you had trouble getting onto your account this morning, you might be able to get compensation.

You can also check websites such as DownDetector, which will tell you whether other people are experiencing problems with a particular company online.
Santander customers aren't the only ones who have had issues with recent outages.
Lloyds, Halifax and the Bank of Scotland's online banking systems went down earlier this month, leaving customers unable to access money.
While in October, Barclays and NatWest customers were raging after a service crash meant there couldn't do online banking either.
It came as HSBC customers also reported issues logging onto their accounts that month too.
