Introduction to Marriott Points

  • Marriott points are the most flexible transferable points (After the merging with SPG, Marriott obtained all its airline partners).
  • You can earn Marriott points with Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless, Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold, AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant, AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Business, and the following cards that do not accept new applications but accept product change: Chase Ritz-Carlton, and AmEx Marriott Bonvoy.
  • Marriott points are stored in your Marriott account, not in your credit cards, so you won't lose your points by canceling the credit cards.
  • Your Marriott points will expire if apply chase southwest credit card don't earn or spend any Marriott points in 24 months. As long as you earn make a purchase with the corresponding credit cards or stay in a hotel, or you redeem some points during the time frame, the point expiration date will be postponed accordingly.
  • Marriott points can be transferred to a lot of airlines miles (you don't have to have a Marriott related credit card to make the transfer), and the ratio is 3:1.25 (i.e. 3:1 transfer rate, plus you get 5k bonus miles for every 60k Marriott points you transfer at a time). The good options are: Alaska Airlines (AS) (Non-alliance), Japan Airlines (JL) (Oneworld), United Airlines (UA) (Star Alliance), American Airlines (AA) (Oneworld), All Nippon Airways (ANA, NH) (Star Alliance), Korean Air (KE) (SkyTeam), etc. If you use Marriott points in this way, the value is about 0.7 cents/point.
  • Marriott points can also be redeemed for hotel stays obviously. Here's the redemption chart: Marriott redemption chart. Generally speaking, you can get a better redemption value from lowest categories. If you use Marriott points in this way, the value is about 0.7 cents/point.

Recommended Application Time

  1. [5/24 Rule] If you have 5 or more new accounts opened in the past 24 months, Chase will not approve your application on this card, no matter how high your credit score is. The number of new accounts includes all credit card accounts, not only Chase accounts. See this post for details about how to possibly bypass this rule.
  2. This product is available to you if you do not have the old Chase Marriott credit card, Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold, or the current Marriott Bonvoy Boundless (this card) and have not received a new cardmember bonus for the old Chase Marriott credit card, Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold, or this card in the past 24 months. Note that what matters here is the time you got the sign-up bonus, not the time you open the account or close the account.
  3. The bonus is not available if you:
    1. are a current cardmember, or were a previous cardmember within the last 30 days, of AmEx Marriott Bonvoy (Formerly AmEx SPG);
    2. applied and were approved for AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Business (Formerly AmEx SPG Business), or AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Formerly AmEx SPG Luxury) within the last 90 days.
    3. or are a current or previous cardmember of either AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Business (Formerly AmEx SPG Business) or AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Formerly AmEx SPG Luxury), and received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus in the last 24 months.
  4. Don’t apply for more than 2 Chase credit cards within 30 days, it’s highly likely that you will get rejected.
  5. We recommend you to apply for this card after you have a credit history for more than a year.

Summary

The signup bonus for this card is good. The annual FN offered by the Bonvoy Boundless is capped at 35k per night, meaning you can use it at any Category 1-5 hotels in the new chart (except during Cat 5 peak season). Category 5 hotels can be found even in New York or Paris, providing significant value for those certificates. We believe the new annual FN will be worth the annual fee. In conclusion, if you don’t have any Marriott products, we recommend you sign-up the new version and keep it. If you have marriott chase credit card offer older version, upgrade it to the Bonvoy Boundless. Be aware the card is subject to Chase 5/24 rule.

While it’s unclear what these new award prices will look like, stay tuned as we find out more details on these changes and how they affect TPG’s valuations of Marriott Bonvoy points.

We’ll walk you through how to choose the best one for your situation, and why choosing one based solely on the annual fee may not be the best strategy.

This card is offering a welcome offer of 75,000 bonus points after you spend $3,000 in purchases within the first three months of card membership. Plus, earn up to $200 in statement credits for eligible purchases made on your new card at U.S. restaurants within the first six months of card membership.

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card has the highest annual fee of any of the Marriott cards, but it can actually be the best deal of the bunch for travelers who enjoy staying with Marriott. The $450 annual fee (see rates and fees) quickly becomes much less painful if you use the card’s annual Marriott travel credit of up to $300 (each account year) towards eligible purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program.

This credit is valid on room rates, as well as property charges such as dining and spa treatments. Using that credit each account year can take the pain of the annual fee effectively down to $150 in a hurry.

On top of that credit, you get an annual award at each anniversary valid for a free night of up to 50,000 Marriott points at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program (certain hotels have resort fees). With the current award chart, this encompasses Marriott Category 6 hotels on standard and off-peak days, but also includes Marriott Category 7 properties on off-peak dates. This makes it much more useful than the 35k certificates that are awarded with the two mid-tier Marriott cards, and it opens up some more higher-end options such as the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin and even the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Autograph Collection and the Westin Maldives (on off-peak dates).

The Bonvoy Brilliant card comes with Marriott Gold status (just like the Amex Platinum), but it also gives you the option to spend your way to valuable Marriott Platinum Elite status. This would require that you to charge $75,000 per year to the card, so it isn’t an easy task, but it is possible marriott chase credit card offer some.

The Bonvoy Brilliant card also has a slight edge on the earning side over the other Marriott cards. While all three of the Marriott cards that charge annual fees award 6x on eligible Marriott charges made at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program., the Brilliant also has bonus categories of 3x at U.S. restaurants and on flights booked directly with the airlines — although there are better credit card options for your dining and airfare purchases. Finally, you’ll earn 2x on all other eligible purchases.

Like all of the Marriott credit cards, this card awards 15 nights each year toward earning elite status with Marriott — a Marriott Bonvoy account can earn a max of 30 nights per year from credit card, 15 from a personal card and 15 from a small business card.

Last but not least, the Bonvoy Brilliant offers an up to $100 property credit (not first premier bank customer service number on room rates) on select cash bookings of two nights or more at Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis hotels. Previous TPG contributor Ethan Steinberg has successfully used this credit at the St. Regis Washington D.C.

When you add these perks all together, the Bonvoy Brilliant can be the best Marriott card for travelers who stay at Marriott properties several times per year and place an increased value on the 50k certificate over the 35k certificate. Read the full card review for more details

Right now, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless card bonus is three free nights (each night valued up to 50,000 points) after spending $3,000 on purchases in your first three months from account opening. This sign-up bonus is worth up to $1,200 based on TPG’s valuations of 0.8 cents per point, making room for plenty of award booking options. Plus, earn 10X total points per $1 spent on up to $2,500 in combined purchases at gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores within six months from account opening.

Outside of the sign-up bonus, the card awards up to 17 Bonvoy points per $1 spent at over 7,000 participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels, and 2x elsewhere. Using TPG’s most recent valuations, that breaks down to a 1.6% return on non-bonused spending and 4.8% at Marriott properties.

The Bonvoy Boundless card also awards an up to 35,000-point award certificate at each account renewal. While this certificate isn’t as valuable as the up to 50,000-point version available with the Bonvoy Brilliant, it’s still extremely useful. With Marriott’s current award chart, you can use the 35k certificate at Category 5 Marriott hotels such as the Marriott St. Kitts Beach Club, Mira Moon Hong Kong, Sheraton Sydney and beyond — all on standard or off-peak dates.

For occasional Marriott travelers, those who want to keep annual fees at a much lower level or anyone interested in taking advantage of this welcome offer, the Bonvoy Boundless can be a great choice. Read the full card review for more details.

If you are a small business owner, the Marriott Bonvoy Business card can be a great way to earn Marriott points. This card has a mid-tier annual fee ($125, see rates and fees) and an annual up to 35,000-point certificate at each anniversary — and you also have the ability to earn a second 35,000-point annual free night certificate after you spend $60,000 in a calendar year on the card (valid at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program).

If you’ve had success redeeming Marriott free night certificates for a good value in the past, the ability to earn a second free night can make the Bonvoy Business card much more appealing.

This card earns 6x at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program but also has better earning rates in some bonus categories: 4x at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and on U.S. purchases for shipping. All of these might be highly appealing to a small business owner, giving you a return of 3.2% based on TPG’s valuations. Plus, earn 2x on all other eligible purchases.

The welcome offer is currently 75,000 Bonus Marriott Bonvoy Points after you use your new card to make $3,000 in purchases within the marriott chase credit card offer three months. Plus, earn up to $150 back in statement credits on eligible purchases made on your new card within the first three months of card membership.

Since this is an Amex card, you don’t have to deal with Chase 5/24 limitations, and you’ll have access to money-saving Amex Offers, which can completely offset your annual fee if you use them frequently. Read the full card review for more details.

Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card

We get it — some people only want credit cards with no annual fees. The Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card fits that bill, but be warned: you’ll get exactly what you pay for. This newer option in the Marriott credit card family is issued by Chase and is currently offering a sign-up bonus of 30,000 Bonus Points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening, worth $240 based on TPG’s valuations.

While the Bonvoy Bold might be appealing because it doesn’t charge an annual fee, it also doesn’t offer any type of annual award night certificate, meaning you’ll miss out on a perk worth as much as several hundred dollars.

Related: Why I prefer Marriott Bonvoy premium cards over the no-annual-fee one

This card awards 3 points per dollar at participating Marriott hotels (vs. 6x on every other Bonvoy credit card), 2x on other travel purchases and 1x everywhere else (vs. 2x with other Bonvoy credit cards).

The bottom line with the Bonvoy Bold is that it doesn’t pack a strong enough punch for most serious Marriott travelers, especially given how easy it is to recoup the $95 annual fee on the Bonvoy Boundless. If you stay in Marriott hotels enough to be considering getting a Marriott credit card, you’ll likely come out ahead opting for a mid-tier card with better benefits instead. While this card may be the right match for some, pause and ask yourself whether this is really the best use of one of your valuable Chase 5/24 slots.

If you just want some level of Marriott elite status but you don’t stay with Marriott enough to warrant opening a Marriott-branded credit card, getting an Amex Platinum can make a lot of sense.

With the Amex Platinum, you can activate Marriott Gold elite status simply as a perk of having the card. However, the card also gives you Hilton Gold status, access to Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts, and a long list of other travel benefits that can make your trips more rewarding and more comfortable, regardless of where you travel. Who should get a Marriott credit card

If you stay at a Marriott property, even occasionally, it’s likely wise to have a Marriott credit card of some sort. Of course, you want to get as many Marriott points as possible as part of the card’s sign-up bonus, but the reasons to have a Marriott card go well beyond that.

The annual free-night certificates alone can make the math work on the $95 and $125 per year Marriott cards. It’s easy to get several hundred dollars in value from a 35,000-point Marriott certificate. Last year, I used mine at the Westin Snowmass during the ski season when rooms were selling for north of $500 per night, making the annual payment of a $95-$125 annual fee a steal. Sadly that’s now a higher category hotel, but the premise remains the same with hotels that remain a Category 5 property.

Once we all travel again, if you use the $300 annual Marriott credit, the math can even work on the $450-per-year Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant card (see rates and fees), as it is easy to get at least $150 in value from a certificate valid for a free night of up to 50k points. So virtually any traveler can come out ahead by having a Marriott card in their wallet.

Which Marriott credit card are you eligible for?

The best Marriott credit card for you might come down to which bonus you can get. Unfortunately, the answer to that is not that simple, with many Marriott card products dating back to legacy Starwood Preferred Guest cards that were available before the SPG/Marriott integration. While SPG cards are a thing of the past, several transitioned into current Marriott cards.

For the two Amex-issued Marriott cards, the rule is one welcome offer per card per lifetime, and while the Bonvoy cards feature a new design, they aren’t technically counted as new products from the old SPG days. That means you won’t be able to earn the 75,000-point bonus on the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card from Amex if you ever earned a welcome offer on the Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, which is no longer available.

With Chase, you have to deal with the infamous 5/24 rule, which says that in most cases, if you’ve opened five or more credit cards in the last 24 months across all issuers, you’ll be automatically rejected when applying for new Chase cards.

In addition to these rules that apply to nearly every Amex and Chase credit card, the terms and conditions of Chase’s entry-level Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card (previously known as the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus Credit Card) say the following:

“The bonus is not available to you if you:

  1. Are a current cardmember, or were a previous cardmember within the last 30 marriott chase credit card offer, of Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card (also known as The Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express);
  2. Are a current or previous cardmember of either Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card (also known as The Starwood Preferred Guest Business Credit Card from American Express) or Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card (also known as the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express Luxury Card), and received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus in the last 24 months; or
  3. Applied and were approved for Marriott Bonvoy BusinessTM American Express Card (also known as The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express) or Marriott Bonvoy BrilliantTM American Express® Card (also known as the Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card) within the last 90 days.

To put that in English … according to the terms, you aren’t eligible for the sign-up bonus on the Chase-issued personal Marriott card if you have what used to be known as the SPG small business card issued by Amex. It’s quite restrictive. So you’ll have to clear several hurdles to make sure you’re eligible before applying for any of the Bonvoy credit cards.

The first step is to make sure you’re on the right side of issuer-specific rules (like 5/24), but then you still need to double-check the terms and conditions of each individual credit card and have a decent understanding of what you have in your wallet.

Here’s a quick refresher on how the old Amex and Chase cards converted to the new Bonvoy branding:

As indicated in the chart above, the Marriott Bonvoy Amex, previously known as the SPG Amex, is no longer available for new sign-ups. The same is true for the Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business card.

100K offer expiring tomorrow: Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card Review

(UPDATE 11/5: Reposting this as the 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy point offer is scheduled to expire tomorrow, Wednesday November 6th)

Chase and American Express are partnering with the new Marriott Bonvoy brand to bring us 3 new credit cards now, with one on the way!  AmEx will be issuing the Bonvoy Business and Bonvoy Brilliant, while Chase will be issuing the Bonvoy Boundless.

I know that all sounds like a bunch of gibberish, but let’s break it down.

The future is now!

The former Marriott Rewards Premier Plus from Chase is now the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless.  With the new card, Chase has released a 100,000 Bonvoy point welcome offer.  Here are the details:

  • 100,000 Bonvoy points after $3,000 spending in your first 3 months of card ownership
  • $95 annual fee
  • 6x Marriott Rewards on Marriott and SPG stays, 2x everything else
  • Free in-room internet
  • 15 Elite night credit annually as long as you hold the card (does not stack with other SPG/Marriott card elite credits)
  • Silver Elite status
  • Earn Gold Elite status with $30,000 or more in purchases in a calendar year
  • Free hotel night each year after renewal, up to 35,000 points

Should you sign up for the Chase Bonvoy Boundless Card?

A 100,000 point offer for a $95 annual fee is about as high as the old Chase Marriott Premier Plus often went to.  If you do need some Marriott points, and want to open a new card, then the AmEx Bonvoy Business card is a better candidate, in my opinion.  As long as you open the card by March 28th, 2019, you’ll have a $0 annual fee for the first year, and have the opportunity to earn 100,000 Bonvoy points, for only an additional $2,000 spend in the first 3 months.  Lower fee.  More points.  If that’s not a win-win, I don’t know what is!

(SEE ALSO – Changes to the Marriott Chase Credit Cards)

I recommend holding out on this card for a higher offer (hopefully) in the next year.  Besides, Chase will be bringing a no fee personal card to the Bonvoy brand this summer, we just don’t know what it looks like yet.  What features do you think the no fee card will have?  I’d love to see the ability to spend for elite status, the same 15 night elite credit, and some better bonus categories!

If you do plan to sign up and want to support the group, you can get the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless application here

Marriott welcome offers

Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card

Annual fee: $95.

Sign-up bonus: The Bonvoy Boundless offers 125,000 bonus points and one free night (valued up to 50,000 points) after you spend $5,000 in the first three months from account opening.

Is it worth it? This is the best sign-up bonus we’ve seen on the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless. In the past, the only competing offer to date Marriott Bonvoy Boundless was a competitive, three-free-night sign-up bonus — and since each certificate is worth 50,000 points, this previous offer was worth 150,000 bonus points.

However, 125,000 points and a free night certificate are worth 175,000 bonus points total, making this a significantly better deal. Plus, this sign-up bonus comes with much more flexibility and no certificate expiration dates to worry about.

For those not familiar, you’ve got a ton of options for high-end hotels to maximize this sign-up bonus. On eligible nights, you can use the 50k certificates on nights pricing at 50,000 points per night or less at hotels such as the on-Disney-property Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, the new JW Marriott Bonnet Creek, the ideally located Springhill Suites Zion National Park, Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino or the just-opened AC Hotel Maui Wailea.

If you’re usually a frequent traveler loyal to Marriott, this is a great card to add to your wallet without a huge price tag. You’re getting a sizable list of perks, including automatic Bonvoy Silver status. There’s also a pathway to upgrade to Gold Elite status by spending $35,000 on the card each year. You’ll also receive an annual free night award (worth up to 35,000 points) at each account anniversary, 15 elite qualifying night credits per year, and more.

Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card

Annual fee: $0.

Sign-up bonus: Earn 30,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening

Is it worth it? The 30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points alone are worth $240 —  on this no-annual-fee card. The card also comes with 15 elite night credits annually (putting you at automatic Silver Elite status) and no foreign transaction fees.

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card

Annual fee: $450 (see rates and fees).

Welcome offer: Earn 150,000 bonus points and a bonus free night award (worth up to 85,000 points) after you spend $5,000 in purchases within the first three months of card membership.

Is it worth it? 150,000 points are worth $1,200. Then, you’ll get a bonus free night award worth up to 85,000 points (which TPG values at $680) that you can use at a top-tier Category 8 hotel (70,000 off-peak, 85,000 standard, and 100,000 peak points per night).

If you stay semi-often at Marriott properties, this is a worthwhile addition to your credit card portfolio. You’re earning valuable perks, including automatic Bonvoy Gold status, an annual free night award (worth up to 50,000 points at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program (certain hotels have resort fees), up to $300 in annual statement credits for eligible Marriott purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program, Priority Pass lounge access, 15 elite qualifying night credits per year and so much more. Enrollment required for select benefits.

Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card

Annual fee: $125 (see rates and fees).

Welcome offer: Earn 125,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points and two bonus free night awards (valued up to 50,000 points each) after you spend $5,000 in the first three months of card membership.

Is it worth it? If you qualify for a small business credit card, this current offer has the potential to be quite lucrative. The 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy points alone is a solid offer worth $1,000.

The card also comes with 15 elite night credits annually (which can be stacked with a Marriott Bonvoy consumer card) and a free night award annually (worth up to 35k points). In addition, a second free night (worth up to 35k points) can be earned after eligible spending. Other benefits include premium on-property internet access and no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees).

Can you apply for more than one Marriott card offer?

If these multiple Marriott card offers are intriguing to you, you can indeed have more than one open Marriott card — some people in TPG’s office have two or three. This can make sense to leverage the annual anniversary award nights and to stack the 15 elite nights awarded by both a personal and small business Marriott card.

However, with four total Marriott cards currently available for new applicants, there are a fair number of restrictions on who can earn the sign-up bonuses across the available cards — especially since you’re working across two different issuers with Amex and Chase.

To give a specific example, if you have the Marriott Bonvoy Business Amex card for your small business spending needs but decide you want to jump on the Bonvoy Brilliant Amex card for its welcome offer and perks, you could theoretically have both of those cards and their bonuses.

Note that these restrictions are all in addition to Chase’s 5/24 rule (which applies to the Bonvoy Boundless and the Marriott Bonvoy Bold Credit Card) and Amex’s one-bonus-per-lifetime rule (which applies to the Bonvoy Brilliant and the Bonvoy Business cards). So you’ll want to make sure you’re eligible for these offers before applying.

Bottom line

For those using this time to rack up valuable travel rewards and solidify their credit card strategy, these new offers across Marriott Bonvoy cards are worth a look at. Marriott cards already hold slots in our top hotel credit cards list. Add in the current increased bonus on the Bonvoy Boundless and Bonvoy Brilliant and you’ve got a compelling reason to consider getting a Marriott card now.

Although the Brilliant card has the highest annual fee among these cards, it also offers valuable hotel perks and travel credits that can more than make up for the fee. Plus, the 3-point bonus at U.S. restaurants and on flights booked directly with airlines is an ideal perk for cardholders who travel and dine out frequently.

The Boundless card, on the other hand, does not carry a bonus rate on dining or flights. However, it does offer a generous welcome bonus and a much lower annual fee – making it the best option for the first year of card membership and a good choice for those who want to earn Free Night Awards quickly and take advantage of Marriott perks but don’t want to spend $450 on annual fees. Additionally, the three-night offer can be worth up to 150,000 total points – that’s $1,200 in value.

Meanwhile, cardholders who opt for the no-annual-fee Marriott Bonvoy Bold card will earn a smaller introductory bonus than other Marriott cards but won’t have to worry about earning enough rewards to offset the card’s cost.

Recent changes to the Marriott Bonvoy cards

The Marriott Bonvoy Bold card is the newest addition to Marriott’s co-branded cards, and it currently offers an introductory bonus of 30,000 points for cardholders who spend $1,000 in the first three months. This is down from the card’s most recent offer of 50,000 points for spending $1,000 in the first three months and matches some of the earlier bonuses.

The new welcome offer on the Marriot Bonvoy Boundless beats the previous one in value. The card had offered 100,000 points after spending $3,000 in the first three months, but now the free nights alone can be valued up to 50,000 points each. That means the three Free Night Awards you’ll earn when you spend $3,000 in the first three months are worth up to 150,000 points in total.

The 10-point-per-dollar boost on grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations (up to $2,500 in combined purchases) within the first six months drives the bonus value even further.

Meanwhile, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant and Business have decreased their previous generous intro offers of 125,000 points and 100,000 points respectively to 75,000 points for both, significantly lowering these cards’ value in the first year. Both, however, kept statement credits as a part of their welcome offers.

Best way to use 75,000 Marriott Bonvoy points

Depending on the Marriott card you choose, the up to 75,000-point introductory bonus can go a long way. In addition to hotel nights and room upgrades, cardholders can redeem points for Cash + Points, travel packages, car rentals, experiences, charity and more.

We value Marriott points at 0.8 cents per point – but this value can vary depending on how you redeem your rewards. For example, each point is worth 0.8 cents when redeemed for standard hotel rooms but worth only 0.4 cents when redeemed for merchandise.

Redemption optionsAverage point valueValue of 75,000-point bonus

To get the most value from your points, we recommend redeeming them for standard hotel rooms. Plus, each time you redeem points for five consecutive nights, you’ll get the lowest-priced night discounted from your stay.

Should you apply now?

Currently, the intro bonuses on the Bonvoy Brilliant and Business aren’t as attractive when compared to their previous generous offers. However, it may be a good time to apply for the Bold or Boundless as they offer their highest welcome bonuses to date. You should also keep in mind that American Express has a limit of once per lifetime for earning the bonus on a particular card.

If you frequently stay at Marriott hotels and are interested in earning a large influx of rewards, the Marriott Rewards Premier Plus card is a great option. Along with a 75,000-point sign-up bonus, cardholders earn one free night at eligible hotels each year.

Benefits

  1. 3 FN (up to 50k) + 10x offer: Earn 3 Free Night (FN) Awards (with a redemption level up to 50,000 points) by spending $3,000 in the first 3 months. Also, earn 10x points on gas station, grocery store, and restaurant within the first 6 months, up to $2,500. The recent best offer is 125k+1FN.
  2. Marriott points are now very flexible after the merger with SPG. We estimate the value of a Marriott point at 0.7 cents/point, making the 125k+1 FN sign-up bonus is worth about $1,075!
  3. If you pay the annual fee after your first account anniversary, you will be credited a free night (FN) available for a one night stay at any Marriott hotel requiring 35k points or less.
  4. Earn 6x Marriott points at Marriott hotels (including Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and SPG brands). Earn 2x Marriott points on everything else.
  5. Complimentary Marriott Silver status. Earn Marriott Gold status by spending at least $35k within each membership year.
  6. Earn 15 elite nights each calendar year (elite nights are for status, not free nights). Each Marriott account can receive at most 15 annual elite nights credit from co-branded card.
  7. No foreign transaction fee.

Disadvantages

  1. Annual fee $95, NOT waived for the first year.
  2. Free night certificate is only valid for one year.
  3. Certificates don’t give the flexibility of points.

  • Your Marriott points will expire if you don't earn or spend any Marriott points in 24 months.
  • In summary, we estimate that Marriott points are worth about 0.7 cents/point.

    1. are a current cardmember, or were a previous cardmember within the last 30 days, of AmEx Marriott Bonvoy (Formerly AmEx SPG);
    2. applied and were approved for AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Business (Formerly AmEx SPG Business), or AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Formerly AmEx SPG Luxury) within the last 90 days.
    3. or are a current or previous cardmember of either AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Business (Formerly AmEx SPG Business) or AmEx Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Formerly AmEx SPG Luxury), and received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus in the last 24 months.

If you have the older version, upgrade it to the Bonvoy Boundless. Be aware the card is subject to Chase 5/24 rule.
