Our Georgetown Food Bank at 5972 Fourth Avenue South in Seattle is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday every week. Our hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We are now distributing boxes and bags of food through our truck docking station right near our front door. This procedure enables us to get our neighbors the food they need and strengthens social distancing to make certain everyone is safe!

Annually thousands of neighbors visit our Georgetown Food Bank & Community Service Center. We strive to serve everyone without regard to faith, religion, age, sex, national origin, creed, or color. We also have a special FACES ballard food bank donations (Food, Assistance, Compassion & Emergency Services) every Friday that serves our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

We always accept your donations of non-perishable foods and personal hygiene items.

  • Like most Thanksgiving run/walk/rides, virtual participation couldn’t keep up with normal Turkey Trot numbers – but in this case, that still meant more than 1,500 participants in the Virtual Seattle Turkey Trot.
  • All told, the event raised more ballard food bank donations $136,000 including more than $30,000 from donations and fundraising efforts from participants. In future years, the team hopes to further encourage fundraising by participating supporters.
  • Participants came from 23 states, expanding the reach of the event beyond their typical pool of event day supporters and creating a national awareness of their cause.
  • In a creative twist, the Turkey Trot used Virtual Challenge results to allow participants to enter any distance completed rather than sticking with a common 5K. This made for a more inclusive, family-friendly event that anyone could show support for.

Pivoting to Virtual Ticket Events to Engage the Community in a Capital Campaign

Ballard Food Bank is in the midst of a crucial $13.9 million Hope Beyond Hunger capital campaign to move them into their own building. As they close in on their goal (they are 91% of the way there!), and moved into the Community Phase of the campaign, they have used a few GiveSignup tools to support their efforts.

Without the ability to host their typical community events, Ballard Food Bank has been focusing on virtual events instead, including a highly interactive Ticket Event. Currently in progress is the Cooking & Conversation Series, a virtual ticket event including a cooking class with local Chef Ethan Stowell (meal kits with all ingredients are picked up in advance), recipes, wine, and a conversation with Ballard Food Bank’s Executive Director, Jen Muzia.

Tickets are available for four Thursdays in April and May, with two different meal options and price ballard food bank donations.     Volunteers are the heart of Ballard Food Bank. Every month more than 135 volunteers donate 2,000+ hours of service. They recover and sort food, stock shelves, and help clients shop. Many of our volunteers who we have relied on over the years are, rightly so, stepping back to take care of themselves or loved ones in this time and sending us strength from the sidelines. New faces are stepping in – teachers, restaurant workers who have lost jobs, tech workers, parents, students – our volunteer family is growing. The first step to becoming a Ballard Food Bank volunteer is to complete our volunteer application. At the same time, familiarize yourself with our volunteer operating policies which explain qualifications, safety and behavioral standards. Once your volunteer application is approved, new volunteers can choose their shift length and times. You can either have a consistent regular shift, or you can drop-in if your schedule changes frequently. Opportunities to volunteer are anytime during these timeframes: If you began volunteering during the pandemic and missed out on an opportunity to participate in one of Sarah's Volunteer Orientations, then you are invited to attend an orientation which will be held Monday evenings at 5pm starting on September 14th. Please rsvp to [email protected] if you plan to attend an orientation. We are looking to fill some specific volunteer roles. Below is our list of our current volunteer needs: • None Home delivery routes to housing programs and The Tiny Villages. These are big routes and we are seeking folks comfortable using our box truck. • None Home delivery to Senior homes in the area. These shifts are a good fit for folks with large vehicles. You can either do these route by yourself or recruit a buddy to go with you. • None Food Recovery Driver. We are seeking a new Thursday Food recovery driver. Must be consistent and able to lift 30+ lbs. This shift would go from 8am-12pm (usually done before noon). This shift would at times require driving our box truck. • None Assistance in our Drive thru. The Drive-thru operates Mondays and Thursdays from 2-6pm and Wednesdays 12-4pm. These shifts are first come first served. • None Volunteers to help with packing bags, sorting, and stocking our drive-thru.     Daily operations: We provide access to nutritious foods and services that support self-sufficiency and we advocate for food equity and justice. We currently provide food in these ways: via our new drive-thru food bank; our home delivery program; our Weekend Food for Kids program; and no-cook options available for our neighbors who are unstably housed. Please note, you only need to sign up once and deliveries will occur weekly thereafter. We will call you the day before your delivery to let you know the delivery window. At this time, we are experiencing high demand so it may be a minimum of two weeks before we are able to begin your delivery. For immediate service, please come to our drive-thru during drive-thru hours. We will contact you when we are able to begin your delivery.


    With COVID, we have been asked to stay home, wear masks, and take care of one another. It has been a year for all of us to find new ways to reconnect and dig deep within ourselves to find strength and hope. It has also been a time that calls us to resist fear and be brave in our actions; stand up when we hear hate speech or see violence; engage in conversations with one another around race; and work to address inequity, so that we build a community where everyone has opportunity.


    Residents of Seattle zip codes 98103, 98107, 98109, 98117, 98177 (Seattle addresses only), 98119 and 98199 may access the Food Bank once per week. We have shopping carts on site and our volunteers are ready to help. Typical food items include fresh produce, dairy, meat, canned proteins (beans, chili, tuna), canned vegetables, baby food, bread, rice, pasta, tomato sauce, and cereals, as well as no-cook items for those with limited or no access to a kitchen. We have vegetarian entrée options, gluten-free items, and alternative milks for those who have dietary restrictions.


    To register, please bring a photo ID and a current proof of address (a piece of mail that you've received within the past 30 days, such as a utility bill, rent receipt, cable bill, etc.) for yourself and others in your household – school or medical records for children living with you are okay. Please note: For our clients experiencing homelessness, proof of address is waived when shopping in the no-cook section. To shop in the grocery section of the Food Bank, a letter from a local agency, such as the Bridge Care Center or a neighborhood school, showing that you live in the area, is required. If you are not in our area of service, please call the Community Information Line (2-1-1) and they will help you find a food bank in your area. We allow only small groups of clients in the shopping area at one time. When you check in, you will get a number. We will call your number when it’s your turn to shop. We distribute numbers at these times: • None Monday and Thursday: 11:30 am, 12 pm, and 12:30 pm. The lobby opens at 1 pm. • None Tuesday and Wednesday: 8:30 am, 9 am, and 9:30 am. The lobby opens at 10 am. Come to the Food Bank when it is convenient for you! Our shelves are always fully stocked so you do not need to arrive early in the day or week. Shopping must be completed and all clients out of the building by the following times to allow volunteers and staff time to complete closing duties: Doors are locked promptly at closing time, and no services will be available after closing. Non-perishable food bags will be offered to remaining clients at the following times: If the Seattle School District cancels school due to bad weather, then the Ballard Food Bank will also be closed for service.     Carrie Schneider is passionate about community outreach and ending hunger. She received her bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from the University of Washington, where she also competed as a varsity athlete in swimming for four years. Carrie works as an admissions counselor at the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington and has served as the PTA president of West Woodland Elementary. She lives in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood with her husband and two sons. She is excited and grateful to be a part of an organization that is bringing hope, food, and services to our neighbors in Ballard, Queen Anne and Magnolia. Kathleen Owens is President and General Manager Information Management at Quest Software. Previously, she worked in a variety of leadership roles in WRQ/Attachmate/Novell (yes all one company) including President and General Manager. During this time, Kathleen led the organization through multiple mergers and acquisitions successfully driving results and engaged employees to create a productive, positive work environment. She resigned in 2015 to focus more fully on her family and community. Kathleen is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. She lives in Ballard. Tom Bernard has been a broker with Windermere Real Estate in Ballard since 2004 after traveling the world schlepping women's shoes for a living. He shares Ballard Food Bank's philosophy that "there can be enough for everyone." Tom has been a resident of the greater Ballard community for over 20 years. Nate works in finance for Nordstrom. He received his bachelor's degree in Marketing and Management form the University of Montana. His previous volunteer experience includes serving as the President for the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce and Senior Facilitator for Montana HOBY. Andrew is the president and CEO of GRAYL, Inc. For the past 15 years he has worked conceptualizing, fundraising, and building ideas into viable companies like Gear.com, My RaceDay.com, and Propel Fuels. His roles have spanned across all functional areas of business and he has held president, VP, executive and director level positions. Previously, Andrew worked for Minneapolis-based Piper Jaffray as an investment executive. He is a graduate of University of California at Davis and has enjoyed living in Ballard since 2002. With two decades of combined experience at three regional public affairs agencies, Julia has focused on creating and implementing new standards with a focus on financial and administrative efficiencies. Julia earned an Associate Degree from Shoreline College and a Certificate of Management from University of Washington. Julia is a partner in the Seattle office of Gallatin Public Affairs. Julia is a lifelong resident of Ballard. Elizabeth is an international tax attorney at Amazon, focusing on the consumer and retail businesses. Prior to joining Amazon, she worked in public accounting advising clients on a variety of international tax issues. Throughout numerous career and city moves, giving back to her community has been a passion and a focus. Elizabeth is proud to work with the Ballard Food Bank because she truly believes that no one should be hungry in our country of plenty. Elizabeth lives in Ballard with her husband and two spoiled dogs. Hsiao-Ching Chou is the author of the cookbook "Chinese Soul Food." She is the former food editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper and has appeared on national television and radio shows, including “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” and “The Splendid Table.” In 2007, she started a public relations firm and represented clients including Tilth, Matt’s in the Market, Canlis, and Pagliacci Pizza. From 2011-2017, she was the director of communications at Institute for Systems Biology, a nonprofit biomedical research organization in Seattle. Currently, she is a communications consultant for clients in the inclusive design, tech and biotech industries. She is the chair of the James Beard Foundation’s Book Awards Committee, and teaches cooking classes at Hot Stove Society. Jen Doak runs local restaurant Brimmer & Heeltap and is a Seattle local with over two decades of experience in the wine and hospitality industries. She is an avid menu collector, ordained minister, and a collector of new experiences locally and globally. Jen thrives on bringing people together and truly cares about being surrounded by good people and quality interactions. Jay is a family physician and lifelong North Seattleite who attended Seattle Public Schools and the University of Washington. He has worked in community health his entire career, focusing on low income and underserved individuals and families. Jay was a doctor at the 45th Street Community Clinic in Wallingford for 12 years, and founded the Community Health Program at Swedish. Jay also helped lead the implementation of Obamacare across Washington State, serving as the CEO of a state-wide health plan for over 5 years. Jay has volunteered extensively, including with Seattle Public Schools and the Boys and Girls Club, and has served on the boards of several non profit and social service organizations. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UW School of Medicine, and lives in Fremont with his wife Joelle and sons Peter and Thomas, who attend Ballard High School. Ted has worked for 19 years with Expeditors, a global logistics company headquartered in Seattle (est. 1979) with offices on six continents. He serves in various strategic management roles leading technology teams in support of global systems availability, operational efficiency, and vendor management. As a regular volunteer at the Ballard Food Bank, Ted enjoys working with the tight-knit team and supporting his community hands-on. A graduate in 1996 from Western Washington University with a degree in English, Ted met his wife Moon on a teaching assignment in South Korea. They currently live in the Broadview neighborhood, after several years in Ballard, with their two daughters. Nina is a Global Training Coordinator for Fraud Prevention with Amazon Web Services. Prior to Amazon, she graduated with a Bachelor’s in Intelligence Studies from Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania, where she also worked for a nonprofit agency supporting children and adults with disabilities. After moving to Seattle in 2016, Nina instantly fell in love with Ballard’s neighborhood vibe and welcoming community. She has always been passionate about volunteering and was eager to join the Ballard Food Bank Board to support all of the incredible work being done to service and protect the vulnerable populations in our community. Geeta has over 25 years of consulting and professional services experience. She is the co-founder of Forum Solutions, a Seattle based management consulting firm that works with clients to design and implement effective strategies for transformative and sustainable results. Prior to founding Forum, she was the National Practice Director for Point B and led that award-winning professional services firm through 10 years of growth and change. Geeta is an active supporter of community service and believes that we all benefit from building a healthy community. Geeta lives in Broadview with her family. Scottie is an educator and mother. She earned her doctorate in education leadership from Seattle University. She has worked with schools and universities for over a 20 years. Most recently she has been working with public schools to build and support leadership and teacher best practices. She has been active in supporting the schools her children attend. She and her husband have been supporting the Ballard Food Bank since they moved to Ballard 15 years ago. Scottie believes that in order to best meet the needs of the whole child in school, we need to support the needs of the whole child and whole family through systems such as those provided by the Ballard Food Bank. David Perez is an attorney at Perkins Coie, LLP, handling complex civil litigation matters. David also maintains a robust pro bono practice that focuses on issues related to civil rights, voting rights, and constitutional law. David received his B.A. from Gonzaga University where he was selected as the student commencement speaker, and his J.D. from Yale Law School. David lives in Queen Anne.

    Participation in Weekend Food for Kids is confidential. School staff, teachers, and family members identify students who would benefit from weekend meals. Each week the Food Bank provides partner schools with the food. School personnel or volunteers then discreetly distribute bags of food to students on Thursday or Fridays. We invite families with children in Seattle public elementary, middle, and high schools in our service area to participate. This program runs throughout the school year, September to June. We take care to adjust food items for students who have food allergies or special dietary needs, and make sure items are culturally appropriate. Can you donate food items to Weekend Food for Kids?     BALLARD FOOD BANK

    Since their founding in the late 1970’s, The Ballard Food Bank has expanded its services to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members of the community. Now in addition to addressing food insecurity, it provides social and medical services through collaborations with a variety of community partners. To provide a permanent and secure base for their operations and to address the increased needs within the community, the Food Bank set out to build a new home.

    The new building was structured around two basic ideas: 1) An architecture of empathy requires that the final design create an inclusive, humane, and dignified place for those in our community often shunted into the most marginal of spaces in the city; and 2) The building must also efficiently and safely maximize the Food Bank’s ability to meet its mission so that it can reach as many of those in need as possible.

    Set along a major thoroughfare near downtown Ballard, the new design nearly doubles the size and capacity of the existing operation. The front door, while still visible from the main street, is set back along a side street to provide a more private and welcoming entry to the building. Directly inside, a waiting area serves as a center point for the community with other services radiating out from a central service desk and seating area. The Kitchen serves as a community café and also allows the Food Bank to upcycle donated commodity food items into nutritious meals. The HUB is designed to host a variety of social and medical services including mail delivery, medical services, counseling, financial and housing assistance, veterans’ services, and case management.

    Fundamental to the organization’s mission is the food bank Market itself, which here is designed as a large supermarket style space.  Design cues are taken from other markets in the community to create a dignified and normalized shopping experience for those needing food assistance. An enlarged and efficient warehouse and outdoor storage yard serves the Market and the food bank’s delivery programs, while a new office space provides an on-site home for those administering the organization’s efforts in the building and community.

    The building form takes it cues from the program elements, with a larger industrial shed-like form housing the Market and warehouse; and a smaller, more residentially scaled sloped roof form creating a welcoming entry and housing the Kitchen, HUB and offices. The project will restore a formally abandoned brownfield site. A newly built streetscape, gardens, urban agriculture beds, and seating areas will surround the new building. A sustainability strategy was crafted around reducing operational costs for the food bank and creating a healthier environment for the unique community it serves.

    SVdP Food Bank 

    Our Georgetown Food Bank at 5972 Fourth Avenue South in Seattle is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday every week. Our hours are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    We are now distributing boxes and bags of food through our truck docking station right near our front door. This procedure enables us to get our neighbors the food they need and strengthens social distancing to make certain everyone is safe!

    Annually thousands of neighbors visit our Georgetown Food Bank & Community Service Center. We strive to serve everyone without regard to faith, religion, age, sex, national origin, creed, or color. We also have a special FACES program (Food, Assistance, Compassion & Emergency Services) every Friday that serves our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

    We always accept your donations of non-perishable foods and personal hygiene items.
