Saddleback church food pantry -

Two South Bay churches hosted its first pop-up drive-thru food bank in Torrance on Monday, April 13 — and within 45 minutes needed more food. A stream of cars entered the Nova Community Church parking lot, on Emerald Street, and received bags of groceries to help them during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has closed all non-essential businesses and caused mass unemployment. The volunteers ran out of food so quickly, they had to get more from a central warehouse.

Pastor John Anderson of Saddleback Church South Bay, who came up with the idea of the two-hour monthly food bank, said that beyond sustenance, some folks needed food for their soul, too. So the church partnered with Nova Community Church to set up the service.

Recipients were asked to stay inside their vehicles. One man came in his street-legal golf cart, with an American flag hanging from the rear and his small white dog riding shotgun. A small child pressed two dollar bills into the hand of one of the volunteers to show gratitude for their efforts. Saddleback Church South Bay also has started a food pantry since the pandemic began, and has delivered food and care boxes to those in need — although the deliveries may take up to a week to arrive.

Information on registering for those programs is available at saddleback. But no registration is needed for the monthly drive-through food bank — the next is scheduled from 11 a. CERRITOS, CALIFORNIA, Dec. 07, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (Nasdaq Capital Markets: FCBP) - First Choice Bancorp, the holding company for First Choice Bank (the “Bank” or “First Choice”), today announced that the Bank’s fundraising efforts for 2020 will be directed to 18 local charities in the Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego County areas. These organizations, helping those most in need in our communities, are facing even higher demand for services during these unprecedented times. Thanks to the tremendous generosity of First Choice clients, employees, directors and friends, along with dollar-for-dollar matches by the Bank and the Much is Given Foundation, this year’s contribution to the selected nonprofit organizations totals $60,000.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, First Choice made the difficult decision to cancel its Annual Charity Golf Tournament, which began back in 2010. For the last decade, the yearly tournament has supported various charitable organizations in local neighborhoods as they provide assistance to families and individuals in need of help. “One of the Bank’s core beliefs is to always look for opportunities to make a positive impact on the communities where we live and work, not because it is required, but because it is the right thing to do,” said Chairman Peter Hui. Despite the obstacles for an in-person event this year, there was still a critical need to raise money to support these charities, so an online fundraising effort was put into place. First Choice President & CEO Robert Franko commented, “We missed seeing all of our friends at the tournament this year, but we are proud of the fundraising response we received, especially given the impact the pandemic has had on our donors. We are grateful for so many supporting this year’s charities and look forward to getting together again at FCB’s 2021 tournament to raise even more money for those in need.”

The 18 non-profit organizations this year were: Asian Pacific Community Fund, Blind Children’s Learning Center, C5 Los Angeles, Caterina's Club, Central City Neighborhood Partners, East West Players, The Entrepreneur Educational Center Inc., Food Finders, Haven Neighborhood Services, Joy Youth Services, Kitchens For Good, Milal- The American Wheat Mission, National Asian American Coalition, Orange County Community Housing Corporation, Pomona Valley Habitat for Humanity, Saddleback Church Anaheim Food Pantry, The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, and Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA. More information on each organization can be found on the Bank’s website: https://www.firstchoicebankca.com/annual-charity-golf-tournament.

Pierre donated the installation of a new irrigation system for the Saddleback Church Ministry's organic farm in San Juan Capistrano. The 28,000 square feet of land that was transformed in to the Saddleback Organic Farm with the assistance of the Pierre team now provides food for the church food pantry, which feeds over 3,000 people in need a month. The farm has not only gained recognition for its continuous deliverance to those in need, but also for its uniqueness in organic farming.

The project first began in April 2011, when Pierre workers volunteered many hours during the first phase to make sure the foundation would be ready to go by pulling weeds and clearing the area of debris. Later in the year, as the second phase began, Pierre installed the irrigation mainline and drip irrigation system to ensure all of the fruit and vegetables planted would be evenly irrigated. Soil conditioner, which included gypsum, was also provided by Pierre to prevent roots from rotting and to guarantee that the produce absorbs and preserves nutrients.

With completion of the project, Pierre Landscape is proud to have been able to assist the Saddleback Church Ministry and the Saddleback Organic Farm.

"When  I  was  first  approached  about  donating  to  the  farm,  I  knew  Pierre Landscape would be more than happy to contribute our landscaping  resources," stated Brian Olsen, Vice President of Business Development for Pierre. "Pierre feels it is important to give back to the community. We never imagined the farm would be feeding thousands of people each month through the church food pantry as it has. It is amazing lending a hand in helping grow healthy, organic produce to feed the struggling families during these tough economic times. A special thanks to all of the volunteers who have consistently dedicated their time and resources to both the farm and the church food pantry. The installation was not only a success, but also a long lasting impression on community development."

Currently, the crops being grown at the farm include beans, basil, carrots, corn, melons, parsley, squash, and zucchini, as well as many other organic fruits and vegetables. In one month, the organic farm can be expected to produce over 500 pounds of tomatoes alone. Every Saturday morning, eager volunteers show up at the Saddleback Organic Farm and assist with maintaining the farm and picking produce to supply the church food pantry.

The Pierre family would like to thank the Saddleback Church Ministry for allowing us to collaborate on such an amazing project.

Saddleback Church Becomes Largest Free Food Provider in OC

Sign up for online giving, manage your account, or give to a special project. Providing practical relief to the community in the form of free food is nothing new to Saddleback — our church has been providing free food to the community for over 10 years. Therefore, when the COVID pandemic shut down businesses in March and created financial strain for so many, we knew we needed to quickly scale up our operations to provide food to struggling families.

As the need grew exponentially, we began to serve ten times the previous volume of food and moved to a contactless drive thru format to keep volunteers and vulnerable community members safe.

Six months later, Saddleback Church is now the number one provider of free food in Orange County. The goal of these distributions has been to lift the burden of families in the community by helping meet not just their practical needs, but their spiritual and emotional needs as well.

It is within this setting that over 13, people have chosen to begin a relationship with Jesus while receiving food at a grocery distribution since March! All of the 14 Southern California Saddleback campuses have been involved hosting pop up grocery distributions in the community and at our permanent food pantry locations. Between now and December, Saddleback is looking to equip and encourageparents, single parents, and children in our community through things like tutoring, partnerships with schools, and help for single parents.

One hour served in the grocery distribution feeds a family for a week!

Many local residents saddleback church food pantry on the kindness of others to provide some or all of their meals on a weekly or monthly basis. This is not a surprise, considering that a quarter of Orange County’s residents live in economic hardship.

St. Kilians Catholic Church in Mission Viejo has graciously kept the doors open for its food pantry for 18 years, said Susan Armstrong, a volunteer for seven of those years.

“In the last year the amount of people needing groceries has increased, between 250 and 300, with multiple families living in one dwelling asking for help,” she said. From Dana Point to Lake Forest, people partake once a month 8:30-noon on Mondays and Fridays, except for holidays.

Food comes through donations, food drives and generous contributions from Vons for bread, Starbucks for pastries, and at Thanksgiving Mission Hospital brings over turkeys to distribute. Curves women’s gym gives monetarily, and the Ingardia Brothers, an established produce and seafood delivery service, gifts produce at reduced prices and much of it for gratis. St Kilians is located at 268 Estanciero Drive, Mission Viejo. Call 949-586-4440.

Armstrong added, “We pray and believe for the shelves to fill up and they keep full most of the time. At least a week worth or more is the goal for each family with enough basic items to makes meals.”

Saddleback Church has a food pantry that is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and 1-6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Kelly Sonnenberg, volunteer coordinator, said, “I really feel we’re the ‘hands and feet of Jesus’. This is the Lord feeding, caring, and providing for people through us.”

Those in need can visit once every 30 days. They receive a customer box with staples such as peanut butter and macaroni and cheese. Then they can select bread, toiletries, condiments, frozen protein and sides.

This food outreach has also seen an increase in people needing groceries. The food bank is in Saddleback Church’s Peace Center, where other services such as legal aide, ESL lessons, and general tutoring are offered. Saddleback Church is at 1 Saddleback Parkway in Lake Forest. Information: [email protected]church.com Call Sonnenberg at 949-609-8764 for volunteering opportunities.

At 5:30 p.m. on Thursday nights, the Church of Christ in Mission Viejo, 26558 Marguerite Parkway, presents the Comfort Café, which features a hot meal, fellowship and groceries.

Megachurch Asks for Nearly $1M in 48 Hours

Dec. 31, 2009 — -- The clock is ticking for members of pastor Rick Warren's California megachurch after the evangelical leader posted an "urgent" letter on his Web site Wednesday calling on congregants to donate a total of $900,000 before the New Year to make up for a massive holiday giving deficit.

"This is an urgent letter unlike any I've written in 30 years," the blog post said. "I have some thrilling news to share with you below but first, some seriously bad news."

Warren said that despite the recession, Saddleback Church managed to stay on budget all year until last weekend when "the bottom dropped out."

"On the last weekend of 2009, our total offerings were less than half of what we normally receive -- leaving us $900,000 in the red for the year, unless you help make up the difference today and tomorrow," the post said.

The church's usual non-holiday Sunday offering is estimated at $600,000 coming from more than 80,000 members at five different church locations, according to a 2009 Reader's Digest profile on Warren.

The letter, signed "Pastor Rick," goes on to detail the church's accomplishments including its food pantry, homeless shelter and financial coaching, despite 10 percent of the congregation being jobless.

"It's basically having to do more with less," church spokesman A. Larry Ross told The Associated Press. "The seasonal Christmas offering was down significantly and, commensurately, the need for services the church is expected to provide is up."

Warren and spokespersons for Saddleback Church did not immediately respond to interview requests from ABCNews.com.

Members 'Confident' in Church Support

Members Kim Offhaus and her husband said they were happy to help out.

"I know that many people are affected by job loss and that Saddleback Church is not immune," Offhaus told the Orange County Register. "I'm confident we'll support the church. It's there to meet the needs of the people spiritually, physically and emotionally."

It's not the first time Saddleback's members have mobilized to raise large sums in a hurry.

Despite the obstacles for an in-person event this year, there was still a critical need to raise money to support these charities, so an online fundraising effort was put into place.
