Food Trucks Coming to SF’s Great Highway

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department today announced the launch of a three-month pilot program for food trucks on the Upper Great Highway during days the roadway is closed to vehicle traffic, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced today.

  • Viva Vegan, a plant-based burger truck, began serving its fare Sunday in the northbound lane of the Great Highway at Judah. It will be there Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • California Kahve, will begin serving organic espresso and matcha from its vintage caravan this Saturday. It will be stationed in the northbound lane of The Great Highway at Taraval on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Department will continue to expand the pilot program through its rolling request for proposals process.

The Great Highway, a spectacular promenade along Ocean Beach, is currently closed to vehicles from noon on Fridays to 6 a.m. on Mondays, as well as on holidays.

This Oakland taqueria is a frequent haunt of taco purists after the simple flavors of grilled meats topped with diced onion and cilantro — plus grilled spring onion and cactus if you ask. Try the tacos ($2.50) with suadero, a chewy and lean beef cut that's slow-cooked, then quickly crisped up on the grill. El Paisa is also unmatched in its loving treatment of beef tripe: The long-cooked meat is melty and tender, with remarkably savory crunchy fried bits providing textural contrast. Offal skeptics who stick to steak are missing out on something truly special. Also notable is this taqueria's excellent salsa selection. The best is its infernal avocado salsa, which will have you wolfing down handfuls of cooled cucumber to quell the flames. There's a nicely laid-out outdoor seating area; or, you can take your tacos home or eat in your car. And no, El [email protected] doesn't have a website.

This luxurious seasonal Indian restaurant in Palo Alto is made for the spotlight.

Opened in early 2020 with big ambitions, Ettan is chic and elegant, with an ample 6,000-square-foot dining room that almost feels like a relic of another time. The multilevel space, decorated with indigo tiles, a glass dome and complete with an enclosed patio, is primed to be a new dining hot spot in Palo Alto. The Cal-Indian menu, overseen by Campton Place chef Srijith Gopinathan, enhances seasonal ingredients with the chef’s expert grasp on spice- and coconut-heavy coastal Keralan cuisine. Small plate-size items are fun: The mix-to-order Ettan salad ($15) with seasonal produce, puffed rice and other crunchy bits reads like a take on the Burmese tea leaf salad but with a unique and tangy fermented curry leaf chutney serving as the center. From the main side, a buttery daal makhani ($24) is made even tastier with the use of earthy and rich black lentils. Chef’s specials, like roasted lamb rack ($47) with nutty coconut quinoa and tomato curry, are always worth taking a look at.

This luxurious seasonal Indian restaurant in Palo Alto is made for the spotlight.

Opened in early 2020 with big ambitions, Ettan is chic and elegant, with an ample 6,000-square-foot dining room that almost feels like a relic of another time. The multilevel san francisco food, decorated with indigo tiles, a glass dome and complete with an enclosed patio, is primed to be a new dining hot spot in Palo Alto. The Cal-Indian menu, overseen by Campton Place chef Srijith Gopinathan, enhances seasonal ingredients with the chef’s expert grasp on spice- and coconut-heavy coastal Keralan cuisine. Small plate-size items are fun: The mix-to-order Ettan salad ($15) with seasonal produce, puffed rice and other crunchy bits reads like a take on the Burmese tea leaf salad but with a unique and tangy fermented curry leaf chutney serving as the center. From the main side, a buttery daal makhani ($24) is made even tastier with the use of earthy and rich black lentils. Chef’s specials, like roasted lamb rack ($47) with nutty coconut quinoa and tomato curry, are always worth taking a look at.

San Francisco is one of the hottest foodie cities in the country, with new restaurants popping up so quickly it can be difficult to keep up with the openings.

But before gourmet chefs were flocking to the city by the bay, there were classic dishes that San Francisco is known for and still does well. Here’s a guide to these iconic dishes and the best places to find them.

Burrito At La Taqueria

The Mission-style burrito became popular in the 1960s. Named for the Mission district, the burrito is distinguished by its large size and extra rice, then wrapped in aluminum foil and taken to go. These generous servings can be found at hundreds of taquerias throughout the city, and there are heated debates among locals about where to find the best burrito.

Oysters And Dungeness Crab At Swan Oyster Depot

This no-frills raw bar in Nob Hill is the best place to get super-fresh seafood (oysters! Dungeness crab!) in an authentic, low-key setting. Fair warning: the word is more than out on this counter seating-only spot so you should be prepared to wait about an hour. But take the line as a good sign because it's a sign of thenumber of repeat and extremely loyal customers. The oyster selection rotates daily, and is a mix of East and West coast options. And, when in season, the Dungeness crab is served boiled with your choice of cocktail sauce or mayo. Btw, if you want to avoid the lines, you can get your crab to go!

Irish Coffee At Buena Vista Cafe

A decadent mix of coffee, whiskey, sugar, and cream, Irish coffee is a popular way to warm up on a foggy San Francisco day. Buena Vista perfected the recipe in 1952 and now serves up to 2,000 Irish coffees a day to locals and tourists alike. This cafe is a great pit stop when you’re out exploring the tourists spots in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Martini At Top of the Mark

This classic cocktail originated near San Francisco in the town of Martinez back in the the Gold Rush era. The recipe as we know it came to be  in the 1880s and continues to be popular today. Head to the Top of the Mark at the Mark Hopkins Hotels were a wide range of martinis are served with a side of 360-degree views of the city.

Cioppino At Sotto Mare

This traditional fish stew is typically made from the catch of the day, and often includes a combination of crabs, clams, shrimp, scallops, and mussels mixed in a tomato and wine sauce. At Sotto Mare in North Beach Italian-style seafood is all that’s on the menu. They serve up authentic and fresh cioppino, making it one of the best places in the city to try this original dish.

Source reduction is the strategy of preventing food from becoming waste in the first place. There are many resources available to tackle source reduction:


Feed Hungry People (Donations)

The resources below include national, regional and local organizations which take food donations in the Bay Area. Most take non-perishables, and some accept surplus perishable foods. Be prepared to describe your donations in terms of packaging, preparation, frequency and type.

Members can publish and respond to alerts and needs for deals, events, donations, wanted, gleaning, land, trade, crowd funding, free, impact and thanks.
  • Feeding Forward: Website; Feeding Forward connects businesses with excess edible food to recipients using a smartphone app or social media, to request a food pick up for leftovers. On-demand drivers handle pickup and notify the donor when en route.

Aid group organizations, who have been vetted, can see what is available locally and confirm with transactions online to secure food. The food access is based on location. While many food banks are unable to accept perishable and prepared food, they often work with donors to find perishable food options nearby. Categories include secondary marketplaces that connect surplus food (food that would otherwise be wasted) to buyers. Food product creation organizations convert edible food that is currently considered waste (e.g., surplus/cosmetically challenged produce, brewery waste, vegetable trimmings) into value-added consumer food products (e.g., juices, fruit snacks, energy bars). The Database also list variety of food recovery organizations that capture edible food that would otherwise go to waste on farms, within the supply chain, or in consumer-facing businesses, and redistributes it to food insecure populations.

Feed Animals

Pig/Hog Farms: Large pig farms may accept food scraps. The Federal Swine Health Protection Act requires that food containing, or that comes in contact with meat or animal materials must be boiled before being fed to pigs. Spent Brewery Grain: Spent brewery grain can be used as animal feed, primarily for cattle, but also for pigs, goats, fish and almost any livestock. Most breweries give the grain away to local farms. Industrial Uses

San Francisco Bay Area Food Recovery Successes:

EBMUD Food Scraps Recycling: Since 2008, EBMUD has been converting from 20 to 40 tons of restaurant food scraps daily to renewable electrical power used to power the treatment plant. Trash haulers collect food scraps from local restaurants and deliver it to EBMUD’s wastewater plant for processing and co-digestion in anaerobic digesters to create biogas used in cogeneration units to produce electricity. San Francisco and IT waste hauler Recology, pickup food waste from restaurants and other food preparers across the city for off-site composting under a mandatory recycling and composting regulation. The program contributes significantly to San Francisco’s diversion rate of more than 80% and its goal of zero waste by 2020. San Francisco also passed an ordinance in 2006 requiring vendors and restaurants to use compostable or recyclable to-go containers. Learn more.

Food Trucks Coming to SF’s Great Highway

The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department today announced the launch of a three-month pilot program for food trucks on the Upper Great Highway during days the roadway is closed to vehicle traffic, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department announced today.

  • Viva Vegan, a plant-based burger truck, began serving its fare Sunday in the northbound lane of the Great Highway at Judah. It will be there Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • California Kahve, will begin serving organic espresso and matcha from its vintage caravan this Saturday. It will be stationed in the northbound lane of The Great Highway at Taraval on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Department will continue to expand the pilot program through its rolling request for proposals process.

The Great Highway, a spectacular promenade along Ocean Beach, is currently closed to vehicles from noon on Fridays to 6 a.m. on Mondays, as well as on holidays.
