Kansas City Basic Info: History, The People, Jobs, and Cost of Living

Kansas City's Roots

Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri and the sixth largest city in the Midwest. The current population of Kansas City is around 481,420, which makes the city the 37th largest city by population in the United States.

Some confusion surrounds the city’s beginnings though. First founded in the 1830s as a river port, 1850 saw the incorporation of Kansas. And a little later came the Kansas Territory. Out of confusion, it was assigned Kansas City to distinguish the two.

Located on the border of Kansas and Missouri, Kansas City is spread over 15 counties in both states, with Kansas City, Missouri as the anchor city.

The People of Kansas City

Though predominantly white and African-American, Kansas City’s population boasts the second largest Sudanese population in the United States. Also, it’s home to a large Irish-American community, and home the famous Browne’s Irish Market.

As Leslie Alexandria told us on Facebook, "I moved to Kansas City from metro Atlanta, where the traffic is atrocious, but I’ve never had to sit in that type of rush hour in Kansas City. Part of that is the population difference, but also because Kansas City’s infrastructure is a little better for traffic control. Kansas City is a location for a lot of refugee resettlement, which translates into some really awesome food. Notably, our two biggest refugee communities are the Congolese and Somali."

The Job Market

According to U.S. News & World Reports, the benefits of home kansas city salary in Kansas City’s is $47,640, which is lower than the national average. Also, unemployment is at 4.3%, which is also lower than the nationwide average.

The top industries here are healthcare and social assistance; professional, scientific and technical services; finance; and benefits of home kansas city. Rayful edmond son, in 2015, CNN rated Kansas City No. 2 in its Top 10 Cities for Jobs list.

The Cost of Living in KC

The low cost of living is one of the top reasons many people move to Kansas City. In fact, Kansas City prides itself on having one of the lowest costs of living in the country. There are tons of options for where to live and even different types of living spaces at various prices. However, they are all relatively cheap for being benefits of home kansas city such a vivacious city.

Expatistan is a great tool for comparing the cost of living in Kansas City with wherever you currently live. Here you can find average housing costs, food costs, health clothing costs, and way more. According to Expatistan, the cost of living in Kansas City doesn’t look too bad at all.

As our friend Leslie tells us, "The most notable thing about KC is it's relatively cheap cost of living—even downtown and midtown. I'm a graduate student, and I can still afford a one-bedroom apartment in midtown. And speaking of midtown, because Kansas City isn't too sprawling, I feel as though I'm five minutes from everything."

Kansas City builder creates Health Home

KC Health Home (1 of 2)

PELLA, Iowa — April 23, 2008 — Just in time for peak allergy and asthma season, Kansas City’s H&S Covenant Homes opens a state-of-the-art, model home designed specifically for asthma and allergy sufferers. Accredited by the American Lung Association® (ALA) and featuring Pella® windows, KC Health Home blends medical science with building science to create a healthier, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly home.

Located in the Woods at Colton Lake in Overland Park, Kan., KC Health Home demonstrates the benefits of a home designed to specifically combat the growing problem of allergies and asthma aggravated by indoor air pollutants. According to the ALA, 6.8 million children in the United States under the age of 18 have asthma. The chronic lung condition is the third-leading cause of hospitalization among children under age 15.

"It is critically important for people to understand that environmental factors contribute to allergy and asthma,” said Jay Portnoy, M.D., president, American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and physician at Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Hospital. “With KC Health Home we now have a wonderful model of how building healthy homes can lead to healthy people."

Better indoor air

“We see a demand for healthier homes growing as prevalence of indoor air pollutants increases,” said Frank Pikus, president, H&S Covenant Homes. “Many researchers blame bad air for the rise in asthma and allergies. This is an opportunity to show consumers the specific elements of a healthy home, to realize that healthy living is really green living as well as a means to lower energy consumption and cost.”

KC Health Home, winner of Custom Home’s 2008 Pacesetter award for its innovative construction, received a 55 home energy rating (HERS) index from ENERGY STAR, which means the home is 45 percent more energy efficient than the HERS reference home. This analysis evaluates energy use by heating, cooling, water heating, lighting, appliances and onsite power generation of the home.

EPA recognition

“In response to rising energy costs, homes today are being built tighter which has resulted in the accumulation of indoor pollutants at levels two – five times of those found outdoors,” said Greg Crable, indoor environments program coordinator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Kansas City. “The KC Health Home project merges sound building science that not only addresses the energy efficiency of the home, but also the health of the occupants by providing superior indoor air quality.”

Pella provided its signature Designer Series windows throughout the home to help minimize indoor air allergens. Rated number one for energy efficiency among top national brands*, Designer Series windows feature optional blinds, shades or decorative panels protected between panes of glass to eliminate typical dust and dirt accumulation usually rampant on common window treatments. A university study found windows with traditional room-side blinds collected 200 times more of certain indoor airborne allergens than Pella Designer Series products.**

Key health components of the home include:

  • all concrete exterior construction — insulated concrete form (ICF)
  • energy-efficient, high performance Pella Designer Series® windows
  • Bluwood® construction –lumber treated with technology called Perfect Barrier System, protecting against fungal and termite infestation
  • complete radon mitigation system¯ designed to help reduce levels of radon gas, commonly found in soil, which can enter homes, posing potential health hazards
  • full waterproofing of the home’s foundation
  • advanced insulation techniques (Icynene® spray foam)
  • high efficiency air filtration and ventilation system
  • Aura® low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) interior paint and water-based stains
  • no formaldehyde-added cabinetry
  • central vacuum system with HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter

As a person ages, there are specifichealth concerns that start arising. It will be important to pay attention to changes that could be signs of those health problems and concerns. You won’t always have enough time to monitor your loved one, which is one reason people turn to home care assistance. Companies can provide caregivers to help monitor a senior.

Home Care Assistance Lenexa KS - Home Care Assistance for Senior Health Concerns

Many caregivers will create care plans that will ensure they monitor what someone is like normally, mood changes, recording medicines, and paying attention to anything that could be a symptom of something much larger. Families don’t always have the time to help a senior as much as they should, which can cause a family to feel guilty when anything happens.

There are many health concerns for seniors, and home care assistance can help monitor a senior. A caregiver can also drive seniors to doctor’s appointments or arrange for a doctor to come to their home. In many ways, caregivers can be the biggest helping hand when looking for health concerns.

5 Health Concerns For Seniors

There are so many things to worry about, especially when a senior is still living on their own. Not everyone can take time out of their day to go check on a senior, making people feel guilty. However, that’s when home care assistance can help you. They will be with the seniors and monitor for these things. They may help implement changes in the house, take them to the doctor, and best of all, they will keep you. The family was informed of the senior’s mental and physical health.

Cognitive Decline

Perhaps one of the scariest things for a senior and their family is noticing cognitive decline. Sometimes this is nothing; other times, it is a sign of dementia. Cognitive decline can be an early warning sign.

Decline in Balance

As someone gets older, their balance may get worse. This can be signs of other diseases, or it could mean it is dangerous to live on their own. With home care assistance, they can implement household changes to help prevent falls.

Heart Disease

This is the leading cause of death for people over the age of 65. If a senior has high blood pressure or high cholesterol, they will need help to properly manage that. These are huge factors that can lead to heart diseases. Home care assistance can help them monitor blood pressure and focus on cholesterol.

Catching The Flu

Although the flu can happen to anyone, it can affect seniors a lot easier. Their immune system is weaker than someone who is younger. Seniors can also catch pneumonia easier.

Respiratory Diseases

If a senior has a lifelong history of asthma, it can, unfortunately, get worse as they become older. The doctor can help a senior manage a lot of the respiratory disease, but the caregiver will need to ensure the senior is taking it as prescribed.

If you start noticing specific symptoms of a loved one, it is time to take them to see the doctor or set up an appointment for them. Home care assistance can get them to the doctor and back while you are busy.
