  8. Using any feminine hygiene product, lubricant or condoms that contain fragrance can have adverse effects on the sensitive vaginal walls. Cut out all forms of fragrance from making contact with your vagina.
  9. Itching is one of the most common initial signs of multiple sexually transmitted diseases. If there even a slight chance that you’ve contracted an STD, you need to get yourself tested as soon as possible.

Although it might feel like it’s the end of the world, vaginal yeast infections are extremely commonand can affect women of all ages. There are several steps you can take to prevent them, or at least inhibit their growth. However the infection itself often has nothing to do with your sexual health or vaginal hygiene, so it might not be something you did wrong. How can you treat it at home?

If your symptoms are mild, or if you see them occurring for the first time, it is often best to wait for them to clear up by themselves. If they don’t clear up, there are several home remedies and over the top medications, you can use to treat them. The most common way to treat yeast infectionsis to use over-the-counter antifungal creams, suppositories or tablets to kill the excess yeast. If you prefer trying natural ingredients first, here are some remedies you can try. It is to be noted that if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or diabetic, home remedies are not recommended. Apple cider vinegar

It’s been long established that apple cider vinegar is a miracle potion sent from above. ACV can be used to treat your infection both internally and topically. ACV is antifungal and helps restore the pH balance of your vagina. It also increases the growth of healthy bacteria to curb yeasts production.

Consuming ACV on an empty stomach by adding a tablespoon to a glass of water or a cup of tea can help a great deal. For topical application, dip a cloth in less than five percent acidity ACV and place it directly over the affected area. Allow it to remain for 30 minutes before rinsing it in water. You could also choose to add a cup of ACV to your warm bath and soak in it.

Coconut oil

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil has antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with honey or coconut oil and apply the mixture topically. If you have never used tea tree oil before, it is recommended to test your skin’s reaction to it first. Apply diluted oil on a patch on your forearm and check for any signs for irritationfor the next 12 hours.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera has several beneficial properties that can help cure yeast infections. While pure aloe gel has antifungal properties, internal consumption can help increase white blood cells, which helps your body fight yeastfrom within. You can safely drink aloe verajuice every day until you see improvement. Just add 2 tea spoons of fresh aloe gel to any fruit juice and blend it together. Additionally, you could also apply pure aloe gel to the affected area three times a day.

Peppermint oil

Much like tea tree oil, peppermint oil is a potent antifungal agent but is be too harsh to be used in its undiluted form. Green tea

Epsom salt

  4. We know you feel like you deserve to sit and do nothing after a tough workout, but you must change out of sweaty gym clothing immediately. The same goes for wet swimwear.
  5.  Not changing your tampon or pad often enough is essentially setting yourself up for disaster. Although most brands claim their product is safe to use for 6-8 hours, it is recommended that you change every four hours, irrespective of the flow.
  6. Vaginal perfumes, sprays and lotions, and any other feminine hygiene product containing fragrance can irritate the area and cause an imbalance of bacteria and yeast.
  7. Make sure to use a water-based, perfume-free lubricant during sex, and always shower immediately after.
  8. Yeast feeds on sugar, so cutting back on sugar consumption can help greatly.
  9. Never self-administer antibiotics and only take them when prescribed by a doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

If your high oestrogen levels are associated with pregnancy or hormone therapy, you should see a gynaecologist before treating to treat the condition yourself. If you suffer from diabetes or HIV, you are more susceptible to infections and need to see a doctor to be treated.

You will also need medical attention if your infection doesn’t respond to initial treatments, or becomes more severe with the appearance of rashes, fissures or sores, and also if the infection is recurring, (you have four or more instances a year). In the case of recurring infections, there is a chance that regular medication such as birth control pills is causing hormonal imbalance, leading to infections. Make sure you inform your doctor about any medication you are on.

What is a yeast infection?

Yeast is a single-celled microorganism which can live in the vagina. Yeast is found in the vaginas of most people at some point in their lives, and also lives on the skin, in the mouth, and intestines (1).

Yeast can be present in the vagina and cause no problem or symptoms, but occasionally it overgrows and invades the vaginal tissue, leading to a yeast infection (2). Vaginal yeast infections are called vulvovaginal candidiasis because Candida is the species of yeast that causes almost all vaginal yeast infections (3).

It is often reported that 3 in 4 women will experience at least one vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime and 1 in 2 will have more than one. Data, though, is actually lacking to determine the true rate of vaginal yeast infections (4). It’s difficult to determine exactly how prevalent they are because it is commonly self-diagnosed and treated with over-the-counter medications (2).

The most common symptoms of a yeast infection are:

  • Burning or itching of the vulva and/or the vagina

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge (5)

  • Thick, white discharge, like cottage cheese (5).

  • Burning during urination

  • Pain during sex (2)

What causes a yeast infection?

It’s often impossible to pinpoint the reason someone gets a yeast infection. But there are some things that may increase the chance of developing a yeast infection, including pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, taking estrogen, and being in an immunocompromised state due to something like HIV or cancer (2,5).

Using antibiotics, oral contraceptive pills, and IUDs may increase the risk of getting a yeast infection for some people but not in others (5). Some studies suggest that the use of pads and tampons, or wearing tight synthetic clothing increases the risk for yeast infections, while other studies suggest there is no link between these and yeast infections (2,5).

Yeast infections are not considered to be sexually transmitted—someone can get a yeast infection without ever having had sex— but frequent and recent penis-in-vagina or oral-vulva sex may increase the risk of getting a yeast infection (5). A sex partner of someone diagnosed with a yeast infection does not need to be treated, unless they are experiencing symptoms of a yeast infection themself (6).

How is a yeast infection diagnosed?

Many people may self-diagnose a yeast infection when they are experiencing symptoms. One small study showed that among women who believed they had a yeast infection, only 1 out of 3 of them actually had one, and women who had been diagnosed in the past by a healthcare provider weren’t any better at correctly making the diagnosis (7).

The symptoms of a yeast infection can be similar to other common vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis, so talking to a healthcare provider is a good idea to make sure the proper treatment is provided.

To diagnose a yeast infection, a healthcare provider will ask about symptoms and do a pelvic exam. They will examine the vulva (external genitalia) and may perform a speculum exam to examine the inside walls of the vagina. They will look to see if the vulva or vagina appear red, swollen, or if any discharge is present (6). They may swab the inside of the vagina and either send it to a lab or look under a microscope to determine if yeast is present (6).

How is a yeast infection treated?

Treating a yeast infection is usually simple and straightforward with over-the-counter or prescription antifungal medication.

Someone who is experiencing symptoms of a yeast infection can try an over-the-counter vaginal cream or suppository, such as:

  • clotrimazole

  • miconazole

  • tioconazole (6).

These medications are used vaginally for 1-7 days.

If the symptoms don’t go away after treatment, it may be a different kind of infection and should be checked by a healthcare provider. The prescription medication, fluconazole, is a single pill that is taken by mouth (6). While the pill is less messy, the creams start relieving symptoms faster. It’s important to know that the creams may weaken latex condoms, causing them to break. Both the vaginal and oral treatments have similar cure rates— around 80-90% (6,8).

Alternative yeast infection treatments

There are alternative approaches to treating a yeast infection.

Boric acid capsules used vaginally for 2 weeks are about 70% effective at curing a yeast infection, but can cause irritation (6,9).

The use of probiotics in the vagina or by mouth along with using an antifungal medication may slightly increase the chance of curing a yeast infection, compared to using an antifungal medication alone (10).

Tea tree oil and garlic both have antifungal properties, but there is not enough research to show that they are effective at treating a yeast infection (9,11).

Consuming yogurt also lacks enough research to say whether it is helpful in fighting yeast, but it’s unlikely to be harmful (9,11).

Douching is not effective for treating yeast, and can actually increase the risk of getting STIs, HIV, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and other vaginal infections like bacterial vaginosis (9,11,12).

After yeast infection treatment

It can take 1-2 days before someone feels relief from their symptoms. In the meantime, wearing loose fitting clothing and trying to stay cool may help soothe the itch and discomfort. Avoid scratching, because this can cause breaks in the skin which can become infected. It’s best to not have sex until a yeast infection is gone because sex can cause more discomfort, and the vaginal creams and suppositories may weaken latex condoms.

8 Home Remedies To Rebalance Your pH

We at Bustle love giving you tips for how to tap into your sexual potential and troubleshoot when things aren’t going your way in the bedroom. But what about finding solutions to those stressful sexual health situations that inevitably crop up when you’re getting down? Emma Kaywin, a Brooklyn-based sexual health writer and activist, is here to calm your nerves and answer your questions. No gender, sexual orientation, or question is off limits, and all questions remain anonymous. This week’s topic: home remedies for vaginal itch that rebalance your pH.

Q: I get a lot of yeast infections. I know what to do when I have a full blown one (an antifungal cream, but if it’s really bad, I call my doctor for an antifungal pill), but I feel like there should be something I can do when I feel that first itch or notice smell or texture changes in my discharge. There have to be some homeopathic remedies to rebalance my vaginal pH before I get a full blown infection! Right?

A: Ah, the perpetual vagina struggle. Pussies are strong, badass, and self-cleaning, and part of how they clean themselves is by maintaining a delicate balance of a bunch of different bacteria that keep you in optimal pH range. When your vagina is anything other than in the 4 to 4.5 pH range, it can start to feel not great. We’re going to learn about some of the things that can help you rebalance your most tender of bits without a trip to the clinic.

"There are many things can mess with vaginal pH including diet (namely, sugar), tight clothes, scented sprays, lotions and soaps, sitting in wet clothes or bathing suits, dehydration, and very acidic foods," Dr. Adeeti Gupta, founder of Walk In GYN Care, a walk-in gynecological care clinic, tells Bustle. "Vaginal pH varies during pregnancy, menstruation, pre-puberty and after menopause," she adds.

But it's important to stress that, like most things affecting the vagina, it's not a one-size-fits-all situation. "We have similar bacteria and the general rule of thumb is that bacteria exists in the vagina, but that balance is different and unique to each one of us," Keely Semler, MPH, a doula based in California, tells Bustle. "What may work for me may not work for you."

Many home remedies are backed by more anecdotal evidence than rigorous science, which is why if you don't find relief with the below remedies, or if your symptoms escalate, it's important to go to the doctor. "If [your discharge] is cottage cheese-like or has a odor which is fishy or foul smelling and looks greenish or deep yellow, then you need to be looked at by a GYN," Dr. Gupta says. "If you have symptoms like itching or redness, then you may have abnormal vaginal pH as well."

What Can Unbalance My Vagina?

Your vaginal pH can get unbalanced by many things you probably encounter on a regular basis, including menstruation (becauseblood is pH neutral, which is a higher pH than your optimal, slightly acidic vagina), tampons that have been inside you for too long, and diet (including sugar and gluten, which proponents of the alkaline diet plan think make you more acidic). Antibiotics can knock out the good flora while they’re destroying whatever unwanted bacteria you’re taking them to vanquish. Finally, semen is very basic, because Mother Nature is a cruel mistress.

If you’re in touch with your vagina, it won’t be that hard to know your pH is off, because you’ll start to feel not-great. "Itchiness can be a sign that your vaginal pH if off balance," Dr. Gupta says. If you find out your vaginal pH is too basic, your symptoms may be due to a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. If you have a yeast infection, your vagina might itch in your labia (vaginal lips) or inside your vagina. In addition, your vaginal discharge might look like and have the consistency of cottage cheese — white and clumpy. Finally, some people feel burning in their vaginas, as well as pain during sex or urination. With bacterial vaginosis (BV for short), your vagina may get itchy and your discharge can be thin, gray or white colored, and smell fishy.

On the flip side, your vagina can also be acidic. Technically, it's always a *little* acidic (since it's less than a pH of 7), but what it if gets to be too acidic? The technical term for this is cytolytic vaginosis, which is when you have too much lactobacillus. This type of vaginal problem is often mischaracterized as a yeast infection or BV, but really it’s just the opposite! The symptoms are a bit different, so make sure to take a pH test to know for sure that you're too acidic, and talk to your doctor about the best way to manage your symptoms.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is anatural antibiotic. As its name indicates, it is acidic, which makes it helpful if your pH has become too basic. But, this does not mean you should put it on or in your vagina.

“Use apple cider vinegar on your salad and not your vagina,” Lauren Streicher, M.D., a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University and author of Sex RX, told Women's Health. You can also cut it with water (I like mine with warm water and honey) and drink it — including it in your regular diet can even prevent imbalance.

2. Yogurt

Yogurt contains lactobacillus, a good bacteria that helps fight bad bacteria in your intestines and vagina and helps your vagina stay in the optimal pH range. Eating yogurt regularly can prevent your vagina from becoming too basic and even help recolonize a vagina with BV with good bacteria, says the Mayo Clinic.

3. Probiotics

You can buy the same probiotics that make yogurt a powerful vagina ally in pill format to help prevent basic vaginal pH. You can buy them as regular pills you swallow with your mouth to prevent pH imbalance.

4. Garlic

Garlic is another natural antifungal that is particularly well-known (by bakers) to kill yeast. Though some studies have found that some compounds in garlic can be helpful when applied topically, most experts say not to put garlic in your vagina to help excessive basicness. Instead, enjoy your food with an extra clove or two of garlic.

5. Boric Acid Suppositories

For a basic vagina, boric acid suppositories are a common alternative treatment for a yeast infection that does have some data that it's effective. Please note I said “suppositories” — boric acid is toxic if you eat it or put it on an open wound. You can cheaply buy pre-made suppositories over the counter.

7. Coconut Oil

In addition to tasting delicious, coconut oil has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal elements. One 2007 study found that it was effective on Candida, the species of yeast that causes yeast infections, when tested in laboratory conditions. 'Natural' remedies for yeast infections can be harmful, gynecologist warns

As soon as the itching starts, so does the yeast infection panic. Some women worry that all vaginal itching and irritation are signs of a yeast infection. Other are so afraid of yeast infections they use special soaps and cleansers hoping to stop them, not realizing that might actually make it worse.

The problem is, most women can't reliably and accurately diagnose their own yeast infections, said gynecologist Dr. Jen Gunter.

“If you don’t know what the symptom is you could be getting misdiagnosed,” said Gunter, the author of the new book, The Vagina Bible — The Vulva and the Vagina: Separating the Myth from the Medicine, told TODAY. “Maybe your vagina is irritated because you have trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection. Maybe you’re irritated because you’re going through menopause and you could be treated with estrogen.”

It's a legitimate concern. About 70 percent of women have at least one yeast infection during their lives, Gunter writes in her book. About five to eight percent cope with recurrent infections.

By far, the most common type of yeast infection is Candida albicans.

A yeast infection can cause a red, itchy rash in the vaginal area, soreness and a burning sensation during sex or urinating. When the first symptoms strike, some women turn to holistic remedies or do what their mom or friends do. Gunter says women shouldn’t rely on “ancient technologies or old-time medicine.”

“Women deserve better than old wives’ tales,” she said. “Women aren’t stupid. They go online and they go to trusted sources and they are told to do that.”

Gunter explains why most natural remedies for common yeast infections don't relieve itching and irritation — and how some can actually be harmful.

1. Boric acid

Many natural treatments promising to regulate vaginal Ph — which is actually not a medical thing, Gunter said — or treat yeast infections contain boric acid.

Doctors sometimes use boric acid for yeast infections that are treatment resistant, but they consider it a last option. That’s because boric acid is so caustic that it causes injuries and kills everything in the vagina, including the good bacteria.

“Boric acid kills the yeast because it nukes everything,” she said. “We actually see quite a significant amount of vaginal trauma from it. You are putting a caustic substance in the vagina and you can irritate the epithelium, it can damage the mucous and I think, paradoxically, make you more vulnerable to getting infections.”

Bottom line: avoid any product with boric acid, unless prescribed by a medical doctor.

2. Yogurt

Lactobacilli — a type of bacteria commonly found in the body that aids in normal functioning — populate the vagina. Another type of lactobacilli is found in yogurt.

Some women believe that if they slather yogurt on when they’re suffering from a yeast infection, the yogurt’s lactobacilli will change the vagina’s microbiome and good bacteria will flourish. As recently as last year, Gunter found this as a suggested treatment in the book, “Our Bodies, Ourselves” and other online sources.

It sounds like a good idea — in theory.

But, there’s no evidence this works and it could be harmful.

“We don’t know what the risk of exposing your vagina to this not-needed lactobacilli is,” she said. “Yogurt has live cultures. What other bacteria could be growing in there?”

Many argue that yogurt feels soothing, which shows it works. But that’s not because of the yogurt's cultures, Gunter said.

“Yeast creams are soothing when you first apply them because they’re a cream. You’re not feeling better because it is killing the yeast immediately,” she said. “A lot of women mistake the fact that they’re getting soothing from a yogurt as a medicinal effect.”

“You have this raw inflamed vagina from a yeast infection and now you’re going to put cut up garlic in there. Oh my god, that stings.”

3. Garlic

Garlic contains an anti-inflammatory component, called allicin, which some think has anti-fungal properties. That’s why some women think if they put garlic in their vagina during a yeast infection, they’ll feel relief.

While this sounds like it could work, the science behind it is iffy.

“Studies aren’t so good," Gunter said. "To release allicin, just like you get the flavor of garlic, you have to cut and crush it. If you have a whole clove of garlic you don’t have the allicin,” Gunter explained.

And, putting crushed, cut up garlic in one’s vagina is as physically unpleasant as it sounds.

“You have this raw inflamed vagina from a yeast infection and now you’re going to put cut up garlic in there,” she said. “Oh my god, that stings.”

Then, it needs to be removed.

“I have fished out cut up pieces of garlic. It is not easy to get out,” she said.

The bottom line: Natural doesn’t mean better.

“We have great potential pharmaceutical options so there's no need to experiment with all these,” Gunter said. “There’s nothing that tells us it’s safe.”

What helps a yeast infection

There are over-the-counter medications from a class of drugs called azoles that are available in either cream or ovule form that provide relief to many women, Gunter said.

If symptoms drive you to the doctor, there are effective prescription treatments available:

  • Oral medication called fluconazole effectively treats yeast infections. One 150 gram dose cures mild to moderate infections while two doses taken 72 hours apart tackle severe infections.
  • Taking oral antihistamines, such as cetirizine or loratadine, minimizes the itching and helps women feel relief sooner.
  • Topical steroids on the vulva can also lessen irritation and swelling.

Abstract

AIDS: Vaginal infections, affecting half of all women, are more severe in women with AIDS. The infection vulva vaginitis, caused by candida, may require medical attention. The doctor performs a pelvic exam and examines vaginal fluids under a microscope. Antibiotics, diet, or a suppressed immune system can increase candida yeast presence. Sweets should be avoided, as well as foods high in leavening, such as bread, cheese, fruit, or alcoholic beverages. Vegetables, grains, rice and wheat can be added to the diet. Eating a half-cup of yogurt daily will help maintain a proper level of yeast. Acidophilus capsules can be taken two or three times daily to relieve digestive problems. Raw or cooked garlic can be used as a vaginal suppository at night. Pau D'arco, the bark of a South American tree, is also anti-yeast. Boil for ten to twenty minutes, and take a teaspoon two or three times a day. Tea, or vinegar and water, can be used as a douche. Some women get relief by adding a half-cup of white vinegar to their bath. Do not wash genitals with soap and do not use sanitary napkins or tampons. Visit a doctor if the condition persists.

What is candida?

In a laboratory trial in 2007, American researchers discovered that digestive enzymes that help break down the hemicellulose cell walls of fruits, vegetables and grains, may also help break down candida cell walls, and even prevent biofilms from forming.3

Joint research by the Kannur Dental College and Kannur Medical College in India confirmed that coconut oil had ‘significant antifungal activity’ on samples of oral candida.8

What to eat to beat candida: How can diet fight candida?

Your doctor may not diagnose candida, as it’s only medically recognised in people with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV.

As alcohol is fermented and contains sugar, you need to avoid it. But you should also stay away from all sweetened drinks, including smoothies, squashes, fruit juices, and fizzy soft drinks. Instead, try herbal teas and still or sparkling water.

What can I eat on the anti-candida diet?

While it may sound a long list of foods to avoid, there’s a lot you can still eat while fighting candida.

  • For breakfast, try porridge made with water, topped with chopped apple, seeds and sweet spices such as cinnamon
  • You can also eat soda bread, as it isn’t made with yeast, and instead of jam or marmalade, try nut butters such as almond butter
  • Plain live yoghurt is, unlike some dairy foods, low in lactose, and the friendly bacteria it contains are beneficial for fighting candida
  • Lean meat, fish, eggs, lentils, all vegetables, rice and rice cakes are also on the menu

It may be tough, but remember if you’re strict for just three months, it could make a real difference to your symptoms.

Vaginal yeast infections (also called vaginal candidiasis or vulvovaginal candidiasis) are painful, itchy, uncomfortable infections caused by an overgrowth of a fungus, most often candida albicans. 

Under normal conditions, candida albicansis found in small amounts inside the vagina.It is kept in check by the vagina’s natural acidity, other vaginal microorganisms like beneficial bacteria, and a healthy immune system. 

A healthy vagina has an acidic pH between 3.8 to 4.5. It contains a multitude of healthy bacteria and other microflora, including small quantities of naturally occurring fungi. A healthy vagina is also lubricated; it secretes small amounts of vaginal discharge (ranging from transparent to milky white depending on where you are in your hormonal cycle) to shed cells and defend against invaders. 

Sometimes though, when a woman goes through a significant hormonal change or has a weakened immune system, her vaginal environment becomes less acidic and the fungi proliferate into a yeast infection. Women are more prone to developing yeast infection when they are:

  • Pregnant
  • Postmenopausal
  • Using hormonal contraceptives
  • Taking antibiotics
  • Living with diabetes
  • Living with HIV or other medical conditions that suppress the immune system

Symptoms and Causes

When the vaginal environment’s pH balance shifts, fungi can begin to increase, causing an infection. The sensitive tissues in the vaginal walls and vulva become irritated, and the affected area may become inflamed and swollen. Other symptoms of a yeast infection include: 

  • Pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse
  • Intense itch or soreness in and around the vagina

On the other hand, if you have mild symptoms and want some relief, certain home remedies may help. Here’s a breakdown of what may help and what doesn’t seem to work.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is known to have antifungal and antimicrobial properties. In one cell study, it appeared to kill candida albicans when taken orally. More research is necessary to confirm this benefit, so talk to a doctor before you try using coconut oil. 

Boric acid

Boric acid has antifungal and antiviral properties and can be used to make homemade vaginal suppositories. It seems to help, particularly in cases when other traditional treatments have failed. One word of caution: Boric acid is toxic to a fetus, so pregnant women should avoid it.

Apple cider vinegar

Researchers do not consider apple cider vinegar a reliable treatment for a yeast infection. You should never douche with any vinegar. This can irritate the skin and can aggravate symptoms. There’s also no evidence that adding a cup of apple cider vinegar to a bath will help rebalance vaginal pH.

Probiotics

Early research suggests that taking a probiotic supplement may re-introduce helpful bacteria like lactobacillus acidophilus into your body. And some women’s health experts believe these supplements help re-establish a more balanced vaginal pH. The science is inconclusive, though, so if you want relief quickly, seek a proven treatment instead.

Yogurt

Eating yogurt with live cultures may support immune health. However, it’s unclear if this means that consuming yogurt can fight or treat yeast infections. Either way, never smear yogurt on your vagina. Most yogurts contain sugar, which feeds fungi and can make yeast infection symptoms worse.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is an essential oil that has antibacterial and antifungal properties. People have used it to treat wounds and other ailments for centuries. Some studies have shown that it may be an effective topical treatment against yeast infections—when used in tandem with traditional OTC medications like fluconazole. Another essential oil, oregano oil (origanum oil), has been found in cell studies to have antimicrobial properties. 

However, both of these oils require more study before researchers can recommend them as an effective treatment. If you try it anyway, never drink tea tree oil. It can be toxic when ingested orally.

Garlic

Garlic can be taken orally as a homeopathic yeast infection treatment. Always consult with your doctor to understand exactly how much garlic to take. 

Although some tout garlic as a cure for all kinds of medical conditions, do not use cloves as vaginal suppositories to treat a yeast infection. There is little evidence that the practice does anything beneficial, and you may end up burning your vagina or making your condition worse.

Baking soda

Adding 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of baking soda to bathwater may help relieve some of the symptoms of an active yeast infection. Baking soda is known anecdotally to help to calm itch and soothe other ailments like athlete’s foot, poison ivy, and hives. One study showed that it may kill candida albicans too, but that’s not enough evidence to confirm it helps. Be sure to follow up with your doctor before using baking soda as a treatment.

Hydrogen peroxide

Douching with hydrogen peroxide might seem like a good idea—after all, it is famously antiseptic and used to clean open wounds of invasive microbes all of the time. Unfortunately, treating your vagina with hydrogen peroxide can throw off its pH balance even further, exacerbating a yeast infection. 

Salt water 

People often use salt water to treat fungal infections like athlete’s foot and oral thrush. Some suggest adding salt to bathwater as a gentle way to kill candida albicans, but more i ll be home for the holidays is necessary to show this works.

Other Treatment Options

If you have a vaginal yeast infection and want to get rid of your symptoms quickly, an OTC antifungal medication or prescription treatment may be the best option for you.

  • Prescription lotions:Two topical creams are available by prescription to fight yeast infections in people with severe symptoms. Butoconazole is a single-dose treatment, while patients use terconazole over a three- or seven-day period.
  • Prescription oral medication:Fluconazole (Diflucan) is a prescription oral tablet that effectively treats yeast infection. It may be taken only once or once a day for a few days. It comes with a risk of more side effects than creams and suppositories, but these effects are generally mild: headache, stomach ache, and rash.

Dr. Vazquez recommends going to a doctor if you're experiencing any of these symptoms because it's easy to misdiagnose yourself. "Most physicians discourage self-diagnosis of vaginal infections because they are often inaccurate leading to an incorrect diagnosis and treatment, and possible worsening of symptoms," she says. ‘Laboratory research shows that Candida albicans grows quite happily in the relatively low concentrations of glucose (100mg/dl equivalent to 5.5mmol/l) found in normal blood and tissues. So trying to starve yeasts of sugar in the intestines is not going to prevent its survival,’ she explains.

‘In fact, immunologists now know that when you’re under stress, your intestinal lining cells actually produce extra sugar to promote the growth of healthy, probiotic bacteria, to help keep Candida at bay. So, starving yourself of healthy sugar sources may have adverse effects against your protective intestinal microbes. The best anti-Candida diet is one that boosts immunity rather than one that deprives you of adequate nutrition.’

You could try a low-sugar diet and replace high sugar snacks with alternative healthy snacks. Consider changing your fruit choices for those with less naturally occurring sugar content too.

What are the causes of thrush?

Thrush is a fungal infection caused by the yeast, Candida albicans.

‘This yeast lives happily on or in the body of just about everyone. It usually exists in a placid state, in happy balance with other micro-organisms without causing any obvious harm. But when conditions are right, Candida changes from its less invasive form, in which it exists as simple yeasts cells, to produce threads (germ tubes, or hyphae) that burrow in between your cells,’ explains Dr Brewer.

‘Candida yeast thrives in conditions that are warm and moist. This includes the groin area, especially after exercise, or if you wear tight clothes and nylon underwear. When the vagina maintains a healthy third coast auto, yeasts remain relatively inactive.

‘Around the time of your period, however, vaginal acidity reduces and hormonal changes also mean vaginal glucose levels increase. As glucose acts as a fuel for yeast cell growth, many women find recurrences are common around menstruation, and during pregnancy. Vaginal thrush is also more common in women with poorly controlled diabetes, who have raised glucose levels. Women who are under a lot of physical or emotional stress are also susceptible. This is because stress hormones increase blood glucose levels to provide instant fuel for muscle cells in case you need to fight or flee from dangerous situations.’

Dr Brewer also explains that many women develop Candida after a course of antibiotics.

‘The most common culprits are so-called broad-spectrum antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline, amoxycillin, cephalosporins). These wipe out the healthy probiotic bacteria found in the vagina, as well as the infection they are designed to treat. These healthy bacteria (especially Lactobacillus) keep Candida at bay by competing with it for nutrients and by secreting acids and other chemicals that inhibit yeast cell growth. As a result, women taking antibiotics are three times more likely to have detectable yeast cells in their vagina than those who are not on antibiotics, and these yeast cells are more likely to overgrow.’

Plus, a lack of iron is another important factor, so fill up on iron-rich foods such as dark leafy greens, red meat, beans and nuts.

‘White blood cells need iron to make the powerful chemicals used to combat infections such as Candida. Even a mild iron deficiency can result in reduced immunity. This is even if iron stores aren’t low enough to cause anaemia.

‘If you have recurrent thrush, ask your doctor to check your blood levels of an iron compound called ferritin. If it’s low, an iron supplement often solves the problem. Your doctor will need to investigate exactly why your iron levels are low – reasons include poor diet or heavy periods.’

What are the symptoms of thrush?

Dr Sarah Brewer says thrush causes inflammation with redness, soreness and itching.

‘The yeast overgrowth can also produce white clumps on the lining of the vagina. These are said to resemble the speckled breast of the garden song thrush bird – hence the commonly used name for Candidiasis.’

She explains that Candida can also affect the mouth and intestinal tract.

‘Infection that produces symptoms is usually only a problem for people with low immunity. This can include young infants and the elderly. People taking certain drugs (e.g. steroids, chemotherapy, immune suppressants) or with a serious illness such as cancer or AIDS are also at risk.

‘Many complementary therapists readily diagnose Candida infection. In my experience, it is more likely that symptoms such as bloating and tiredness are due to irritable bowel syndrome or food intolerances. An astonishing 178 different proteins that can trigger immune reactions have been identified in Candida species, including proteins in their outer wall and enzymes that they secrete. Although their role is unclear, a review published in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology suggested this might explain why symptoms of IBS can worsen after eating mould-containing foods.’

‘Researchers have discovered that vaginal lining cells play a role in regulating Candida growth by sending out chemical signals that attract immune cells into the area to fight infections and keep thrush at bay,’ says Dr Brewer. ‘Some women with recurrent vaginal thrush appear to have vaginal lining cells that are less able to send out this call for help, and are more susceptible to vaginal thrush as a result of the genes they have inherited.’

Sex can also give women thrush. ‘Candida spores can survive under the male foreskin. So some women may experience a recurrence after sex as a result. Men do not usually have problems with Candida. They may develop a rash and irritation of the penis (Candida balanitis). This will be after intercourse if their partner has thrush and condoms weren’t used. These symptoms are usually self-limiting and improve with salt bathing and drying. If you experience recurrent symptoms ask your partner to use an antifungal cream on his penis for five days.’

What is a yeast infection?

Yeast is a single-celled microorganism which can live in the vagina. Yeast is found in the vaginas of most people at some point in their lives, and also lives on the skin, in the mouth, and intestines (1).

Yeast can be present in the vagina and cause no problem or symptoms, but occasionally it overgrows and invades the vaginal tissue, leading to a yeast infection (2). Vaginal yeast infections are called vulvovaginal candidiasis because Candida is the species of yeast that causes almost all vaginal yeast infections (3).

It is often reported that 3 in 4 women will experience at least one vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime and 1 in 2 will have more than one. Data, though, is actually lacking to determine the true rate of vaginal yeast infections (4). It’s difficult to determine exactly how prevalent they are because it is commonly self-diagnosed and treated with over-the-counter medications (2).

Yeast infection symptoms

The most common symptoms of a yeast infection are:

  • Burning or itching of the vulva and/or the vagina

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge (5)

  • Thick, white discharge, like cottage cheese (5).

  • Burning during urination

  • Pain during sex (2)

The discomfort caused by a yeast infection can range from mild to severe, and can impact a person’s ability to go about their daily life.

What causes a yeast infection?

It’s often impossible to pinpoint the reason someone gets a yeast infection. But there are some things that may increase the chance of developing a yeast infection, including pregnancy, uncontrolled diabetes, taking estrogen, and being in an immunocompromised state due bb dakota plaid coat something like HIV or cancer (2,5).

It’s important to know that the creams may weaken latex condoms, causing them to break. Both the vaginal and oral treatments have similar cure rates— around 80-90% (6,8).

Alternative yeast infection treatments

There are alternative approaches to treating a yeast infection.

Boric acid capsules used vaginally for 2 weeks are about 70% effective at curing a yeast infection, but can cause irritation (6,9).

The use of probiotics in the vagina or by mouth along with using an antifungal medication may slightly increase the chance of curing a yeast infection, compared to using an antifungal medication alone (10).

Tea tree oil and garlic both have antifungal properties, but there is not enough research to show that they are effective at treating a yeast infection (9,11).

It’s best to not have sex until a yeast infection is gone because sex can cause more discomfort, and the vaginal creams and suppositories may weaken latex condoms.
