BAY AREA, CA — Anyone else catch the "Grease" sing-along on CBS this summer? The 1978 musical classic hasn't, perhaps, aged the best in the 40-plus years since its release, but it invoked a nostalgia for something most Bay Area residents hadn't seen much in the decades before the pandemic struck: a drive-in movie.

Even as San Francisco moved into the "orange" zone for businesses reopening, from hair salons to gyms to (limited) indoor dining, indoor movie theaters were only allowed to reopen earlier this month.

However, the National Association of Theatre Owners of California/Nevada announced that its members agreed to keep their theaters closed until the city of San Francisco loosens its COVID-19 restrictions.

Find out what's happening in Mill Valley with free, real-time updates from Patch.

Some indoor movie theaters have already reopened with limited capacity in Napa, Marin, Solano and San Mateo counties. Recently, the Regal Cinemas chain announced it will temporarily close all of its movie theaters across the United States.

But for those still too worried about catching COVID to attend an indoor movie, that's OK. Find a Danny Zuko, or at least someone with a license and car, and mosey on over to one of the new theaters of yesteryear.

For the ones listing the drive-in experience as ghetto my question to you is, what ghetto have you ever even been to? Why is it more classy to spend $50+ on a movie night for the family, and I only have a family of 2! I get it, there are always pros & cons. But some pros are #1 on a beautiful night its the best! #2 you can adjust the sound as you like, #3 you get 2 movies for the price of less than one at the walk-in theater, # 4 you can bring your own food, snacks, and drinks without breaking the family budget. Cons: no Imax or 3D & cigarette smoke (but you can always roll up the windows). What ever your personal preference is Im sure it has nothing to do with your class. But how well your needs are met. All-in-all, I think the San Jose Capitol Drive-In is of the few remaining places where you can bring the whole family and some friends for good/affordable entertainment.

The Good: low price double features, in the comfort of your own vehicle. Kids can be loud and obnoxious but only ruin the film for those in your van instead of for everyone. Can have the volume on as quiet or loud as you want via your radio. Can even ditch the car and carry a radio with you as you walk around or sit in a lawn chair. You can also easily bring in your own drinks and snacks. The Bad: the airplanes and trains that go by are loud. Can be very distracting. Street lights and inconsiderate drivers using their headlights during showtimes can wash out the screen making dark scenes hard to see. It can also be hard to navigate the lot as there are 6 screens and a series of tents and cars making a maze to sort through. Id like some safety lights to help pedestrians get to the restrooms, and more signage for the drivers.

P

P Calhoun

Pros: Cheap! Two people can see a new release for $15.00. You can bring your dog! Dogs like movies and popcorn too! You can bring your own snacks, no need to spend all the money you saved at the snack bar. New releases! Nostalgic. I grew up going to the drive-ins. This is the only one still around in the area. Listen through your radio, no hanging a heavy speaker on your window. (this can be a con if your car battery dies, but the pro to that is they have battery jumpers and a guy who will jump start your car) Cons: Families should go to the early show as the crowd gets shady later at night. Some generous attendees like to share their second hand pot smoke with you! (Depending on your view, you may see this as a pro)

MA

Marco Paganini

Inexpensive option to watch a movie with your kids. The price is competitive and they show current movies. As a movie watching experience... well... its a drive-in. The sound is received through FM, so quality suffers. Theres always people walking around, not to mention cars driving with headlights on during the show. If youre squeamish about what your kids can see, keep in mind that projection screens are side by side -- you may take your kid to see some kid show but a racy movie (no X-rated stuff, though) is showing on the next screen for all to see. Theres also a railroad nearby and train noise is a possibility. Despite all that, my kids loved this place when they were younger.

TR

Trenz Uzumaki

The place use to be good. Now its dirty garbage everywhere. They need to hire a janitor to clean the area. Plus they have a sign in the gate saying DRUG FREE and then you see some people smoking marijuana. WHAT are you serious there is a lot off kids that comes here. You can smell the stink of that drug a block away. This kind of people are disrespectful and disgrace to the community and the city of San Jose. if you want to smoke or use drug do that at your house not here in drive in theater. West wind should have a security or collaborate with SJPD to arrest this drug addict or maybe drug dealers. Have RESPECT to other people.Come on west wind do something about this problem.

IZ

Izzy Palmer

Staff have no idea how to charge their portable car starter and are incredibly rude and dismissive about it. I spoke with a man who had a broken foot who had been waiting hours for the charger only to be told that they gave it away to someone else and he would have to wait for it to be charged again. And they require you to either wait until every movie is finished in the whole lot to have someone else help you start your car or you can push it out yourself. Absolutely awful service and the employees even turned away another person saying they couldnt help them before I pointed out that they were lying.

RI

Rick Henrikson

Roll into the past, popcorn and snacks on your lap, movies on the dash. Finally made it all the way down here from SF and it was definitely worth it. There arent many options for drive-in movies in the bay area (I think only 2 places, and theyre a bit out of the way). The cost was around $7 per person and included two movies (including new releases). It looked like you could actually just mix and match to move to another screen between shows. A lot of cars actually didnt even show up til the second screening. The food was relatively inexpensive, but you can probably bring something better from home.

HIDE YO KIDS HIDE YO WIFE & PARK AWAY FROM THE BACK cus yah know they getting da business done. To those horny impatient couples just wait till the movie is over geez :p "No, sweetie theres no earthquake in that car. Just forget about it, okay." (」゜ロ゜)」 k. In the mornings from wednesday to sunday this place is a flea market, but at night it transforms into a drive-in movie theater where your cars stereo provides you with the sound to the magical ginormous screen. Pretty coo stuff. I recommend experiencing the drive-in at least once in your lifetime. Its the perf night out for the family, friends, sidechick, bae or soon-to-be-bae (-; BTW, check the movie showtimes on their website and general admission is 7.95$, kids admission (5-11 y/o) is 1.25$, and kids under 4 are FREE. Theres also double features where you can watch 2 movies for only 15$. I KNOW, I KNOW you get to save a dollar woohooooo!! ヽ(´o`; TIPS -If you have a comfy car then by all means stay inside, but if you DONT, do bring a blanket, pillows, or some lawn chairs to relax on. -If youre on a budget, just yah know hide under some blankets somewhere in your car *coughcough you didnt hear this from me (¬‿¬ ) -Get there early like 30 min beforehand if theres currently a popular movie out cus youre bound to be stuck in a long line. Be smart, bring your 5 min ab workout at home food, and arrive early. -They overprice their snacks inside the food court, so definitely bring food from home or buy some before arriving. On a side note, the hot dogs, nachos, pizza, and popcorn are ok. FYIs -Theres a playground and arcade near the food court. Perf if you wanna kill time before your movie starts. -If you subscribe to their drive in movies san jose hours newsletter you can receive coupons! (Oh yeah baby, coupons come to mama.) -On TUESDAYS the price is only 5.25$ -Theres special drive-in events like Customer Appreciation Night where all movies are FREE, Pajama Party, car shows, special screenings, Battle of the Bands, etc. Check their website for more info. -On their website you can purchase a gift certificate which go from increments of 5$. A unique-ish kind of gift for a friend, co-worker, family member, etc. -Theres very little lighting, so be careful if youre planning on walking to the food court or bathroom. -When leaving the drive-in be on the lookout for people and lil children who might be running rampant for whatever reason. AND CHILL because it might take awhile to exit depending on how packed it is. Aight, BJ out. Enjoy your drive-in movie peeps. c;

Inexpensive option to watch a movie with your kids. The price is competitive and they show current movies. As a movie watching experience. well. its a drive-in. The sound is received through FM, so quality suffers. Theres always people walking around, not to mention cars driving with headlights on during the show. If youre squeamish about what your kids can see, keep in mind that projection screens are side by side -- you may take your kid to see some kid show but a racy movie (no X-rated stuff, though) is showing on the next screen for all drive in movies san jose hours see. Theres also a railroad nearby and train noise is a possibility. Despite all that, my kids loved this place when they were younger.

The food was relatively inexpensive, but you bmo bank probably bring something better from home.

Alameda County Fairgrounds will host new drive-in theater, while others close in Concord, San Jose

The series will begin with "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" on June 12. "Goonies" is scheduled for the next day, June 13, though tickets have already sold out. "Jurassic Park" and "Grease" will round out June's programming, though the organizers have yet to announce the titles that will be shown for the rest of the summer. There will be no showing on July 4.

As the public health crisis has closed many local theaters, drive-ins have provided the only outlet for the public to enjoy a night out at the movies. But on Wednesday, the Bay Area's closest venues — the West Wind Solano Drive-In in Concord as well as San Jose's West Wind Capitol Drive-In — were closed as a result of city curfews.

Alameda County's 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew is still in effect, but will be lifted on June 5, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.
