USAA Closing Financial Centers

In a somewhat surprising move, USAA recently announced that it will be closing all but four of its financial centers.  Why is this happening, and what does it mean for USAA customers?

In many ways, this is a return to USAA's origins.  When I first started using USAA, many moons ago, the Internet was just really getting started and there were no smart phones.  All transactions were handled over the phone and through the mail. (I think I finally threw out my old postage paid USAA deposit envelopes.)

Over the years, USAA has been an industry leader in figuring out how to use technology to provide more services without building more infrastructure.  USAA was one of the first banks to build a viable banking model that didn't require actual banks, and it was a revolutionary thing. This suited the unique needs of their member base, who lived around the country and around the world.  However, there were always a few complaints about the transactions that were a little easier to do face-to-face.

In 2009, USAA responded to member requests by opening its first "branch" in San Antonio, Texas, quickly followed by several more locations.  Currently located at 21  locations around the country, USAA financial centers offer certain limited banking, insurance, investment and retirement functions, plus a convenient place to put USAA ATMs.

After 7 years of running financial centers, the results are in.  Even with 21 locations, 85% of USAA members live outside the areas serviced by USAA financial centers.   Only 2.5% of members use financial centers for transactions other than ATM use, which is a really small number.   In analyzing the transactions that are occurring at financial centers, nearly everything could be done using the USAA Mobile App or an ATM, and the use of mobile banking continues to increase every year.  Maintaining buildings and staff is expensive when you can accomplish the same results without those constant costs.

As a result, USAA has decided to close all but four financial centers.  Services being offered at the financial centers will be replaced by the USAA Mobile App, the website, expanded ATM capabilities, and there is always the telephone.  More complex transactions such as meeting with a Certified Financial Planner can use technology such as Skype.  In addition, USAA will be adding additional ATMs in areas where financial centers are closing.

What does this mean for you?  If you don't currently use a financial center, your experience will not change.  If you do currently use a financial center, you will have to adapt to the old/new methods of transacting business with USAA, or move your business to another company.

I have very mixed feelings about this.  On one hand, the numbers certainly support the logic.  Plus, I've never used a USAA financial center, even when I have lived near one.  My business with USAA has always been done over the telephone, through the website.  I do have the USAA app, but I don't use it.  Despite the fact that I'm using old-school technology, I've never felt like it was difficult to do business with USAA because I didn't have a branch.

On the other hand, this change assumes that members are capable and willing to utilize the USAA app, use the website, or use the telephone.  There are many reasons why these solutions might be challenging.  Not everyone has a smart phone, a computer, or internet service.   Older members may not be comfortable using the USAA mobile app, and smart younger members may be uncomfortable with the security aspects of using the internet to perform certain banking transactions.

Update: USAA shutting down financial centers as members flock to digital banking

USAA doesn't have much of a physical banking footprint, and now there are plans to eliminate the nearly two dozen brick-and-mortar centers in its network by the end of April, according to the company.

USAA anticipates to shut down 17 out of 21 financial service centers across the U.S., including two in San Antonio, and had planned for the closings by the end of 2017.

Instead, the local financial services company for members of the military and their families, plans to double its number of ATMs in the coming years, particularly in locations with military populations, such as Killeen, where Fort Hood is. For each financial center that's closing, USAA plans to install at least two ATMs in its place.

Roughly 85 percent of the company's military-related members already live outside of USAA's financial center network. USAA members already have access to an ATM network that spans 65,000 machines nationwide without surcharges.

In the San Antonio market, it means closing the Alamo Ranch and Market Forum financial centers but keeping the company's sole bank lobby at its headquarters open. It's keeping open financial centers is Annapolis, Maryland; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and West Point, New York — the homes of the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Military Academy, respectively.

The move comes as the financial services company is seeing the majority of its members use mobile apps and online banking for services.

During 2016, only 2.1 percent of the insurance company's members visited a financial center during 2016. Only about 2.5 percent of the company's customers have visited the centers. Meanwhile, there were 1 billion transactions online in 2015 and 2016.

About 140 jobs will be eliminated. Existing employees are being offered relocation packages to work elsewhere in the country for the company.

In 2012, USAA opened 14 centers across 10 states, all equipped with videoconferencing technology and set its sights and growing that footprint.

The goal was to offer more expertise for complex financial services and insurance questions for those looking for face-to-face interactions, officials told American Banker.

None of the financial centers had bank tellers, like a typical retail banking branch. Now, five years later, USAA officials are responding to customer demands, having noticed that most members used the branches merely to visit the ATM.

USAA (United Services Automobile Association) is a major player in the car insurance market in Maryland and around the United States. The company offers insurance to military families, insuring those in the military and their family members. It is based in San Antonio, Texas and all of its motor vehicle collision claims adjusters appear to be based there.

Due to its connection with the military, USAA was the 21th most respected company in the country in 2020 according to a Harris Poll. The reality is that they are not a nonprofit organization, but an insurance company. USAA's CEO made at least $5 million in 2019.

USAA is a corporation. Like any other corporation, it does everything in their power to earn money. Negotiating with USAA has told our auto accident attorneys that it, like every other insurance company, will try to pay victims less than the full value of their claim.

Some insurance companies tend to be fair; others we do not expect to be fair. However, our lawyers find it difficult to make blanket generalizations about the USAA claims process. More than most insurance companies, USAA gives a bit more leeway for it claims adjusters to value the case on both tangible and intangible factors. So, despite its heavy reliance on computer-based case evaluation software, its car accident claims process values varies more widely depending on the adjuster than most insurance companies.

Our accident attorneys have noticed some valuable trends from dealing with USAA over the years. For one, USAA is more willing than some of the other major insurance companies to dramatically increase their offers after a lawsuit has been filed. (Note: if you do not settle your case right after the lawsuit is filed, you are not likely to settle the case, if it settles at all, until the settlement conference immediately before trial.)

Additionally, USAA does not like to take cases to trial. The last reported verdict in Maryland involving USAA was in 2019. Our lawyers have had scores of cases against USAA. But our last Circuit Court case (larger claims) involving USAA that went to a jury verdict was literally 14 year ago (we pounded them). That was an underinsured motorist case. It seems that USAA has more guts to go to trial in cases where it is the named defendant in an uninsured or underinsured motorist case. (Why? In Maryland, the lack of meaningful bad faith laws makes it easier for USAA to take the risk.)

This is not the only reason why case value increases after a lawsuit is filed. The value of all accident insurance claims increases as a trial date gets closer because insurers take a more critical look at their defense of the case. They consider the real quality of the accident victim’s injury claim. For example, more times than our lawyers can count, insurance companies have admitted liability just before trial after spending over a year denying the accident was their driver’s fault.

USAA, like many insurance companies, uses a computer-based program called Colossus to assist in the claims process in valuing accident claims for settlement. It evaluates a victim’s medical records and medical expenses and decides how much treatment it thinks was necessary for the crash. It determines what it thinks a fair value is for (1) medical treatment, (2) past or future wage loss, and (3) the victim’s pain and suffering. This company, like most insurance companies, typically undervalues all of these categories before a lawsuit is filed.

Our personal injury attorneys would not pick USAA as a model defendant by any stretch. The company has stubbornly defended many claims that we thought should have been settled sooner. Nothing is gained by going through the litigation process for the sake of going through the litigation process.

Still, USAA will sometimes surprise us by offering a reasonable value to settle the action out-of-court without the need for filing a lawsuit. It depends on the type of case, the jurisdiction, the insurance adjuster handling the claim, and the nature of the injuries.

Based on our extensive experience with USAA, and from looking at jury verdicts, it seems that this insurer is more likely to take a case to trial against its own insured making an uninsured or underinsured motorist claim. In Maryland, awards are largely capped at the policy limits in uninsured motorist cases. However, if the insurance company gets a verdict that is more than the policy limits, it may be liable for the entire verdict.

How does USAA use Colossus to evaluate claims?

Like some other insurance companies, USAA uses a computer program called Colossus to calculate its insurance claim payouts. This program tends to undervalue claims. Most importantly, Colossus takes into account the quality of your lawyer when calculating your case’s value. Insurance companies will determine if a lawyer or law firm is likely to be willing to take the auto accident case to trial by looking at their record of trying cases in the past. If they are not likely to try an insurance claim, USAA can get away with a lower settlement offer.

This means that your attorney’s track record and the law firm's track record might be a factor in how your claim is evaluated.

How does USAA evaluate no-fault and underinsured claims?

To evaluate these personal injury protection (PIP) and underinsured motorist claims, USAA uses an Auto Injury Solutions/Concentra (AIS) program. One of the things it takes into account are audits of medical bills submitted to USAA for payment under the first party medical coverage of USAA auto insurance policies.

It’s important to note that USAA has settled more than one class-action lawsuit which alleged it denied medical benefits to injured policyholders who had PIP or other medical-payments coverage on their car insurance policy.

Why does USAA often wait until a lawsuit is filed or a trial is near before making a reasonable settlement offer?

Many lawyers and automobile accident victims get cold feet when it comes to filing a lawsuit and actually walking into a courtroom. At this stage, the victim could file a personal injury claim and potentially be left with nothing if the case is lost. For this reason, USAA waits until the last minute to make a fair settlement offer. Essentially, this insurer want to see if you will give in before they do.

Does USAA mean it when they say they will go to trial?

USAA rarely takes cases to trial. We have not had a case got to trial with USAA in many years in spite of the fact that our Maryland accident lawyers have handled hundreds of USAA claims. USAA is clearly an insurance company that strongly prefers to avoid trials.

We tried a case against USAA in Baltimore City on behalf of a USAA policyholder in which they significantly undervalued the case. They have not let a case go to trial with us since that verdict.

This strategy is smart because they are able to bully plaintiffs and lawyers who fear the courtroom while settling all other cases before trial. This way they entirely avoid the courtroom, where juries would often rule against them in costly verdicts.

USAA will make a reasonable settlement offer before trial on most serious accident claims. This is especially true if the plaintiff’s lawyer has a history of success at trial and if the case is at the point where the suit has been filed, discovery is complete, and the claims adjuster has fully evaluated the case.

If you are seriously injured, you should hire an attorney to handle your case. There are many mistakes you can make that may prevent you from winning a substantial amount of money.

Arguably, there are many minor soft tissue injury cases in which plaintiffs do better when they handle their own cases. This is because, with cases worth less than about $3,000, attorney’s fees can subtract a large chunk from a case’s payout.

She is diagnosed with right hip, right hand, bilateral knee, and bilateral shoulder sprains, as well as post-traumatic headaches and vertigo. She begins physical therapy and sees a neurologist for her headaches. She has preexisting injuries in her spine, so USAA offers only $40,000 to settle out-of-court. We file suit and the case ultimately settles for $300,000.
  • 2017, Maryland (Baltimore County): $15,748 Verdict The plaintiff is driving northbound on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway just south of Baltimore when he slows down for traffic and is rear-ended by the car behind him. He suffers unspecified injuries in the accident and demands UIM benefits from his insurer, USAA. USAA refuses, and the case goes to trial in Baltimore County. The jury awards the plaintiff $15,747 in damages.

The defendant, who is driving in the adjacent lane of traffic, attempts to change lanes and strikes the plaintiff’s vehicle. The defendant is a USAA member. The plaintiff suffers a lumbar disc herniation and disc protrusion with radiculitis at the L4-L5 nerve root. The treatment includes 4 months of physical therapy and 3 epidural injections. USAA disputes damages, claiming that the plaintiff’s back injuries were related to a subsequent accident. Just prior to mediation, USAA agrees to settle for $45k.
  • 2016, Maryland: $97,500 Settlement Our client is traveling on his bike in Montgomery County. He gets hit in the crosswalk late at night coming home from a party. He suffers a fractured femur that heals well. One potential problem in the case is that the client was intoxicated. The driver’s insurance is USAA. He had a $100,000 policy, and ultimately, they offered $70,000. We reject the offer and tell them we will file suit. The offer continues to increase until we get just $2,500 away from the policy limits, and the case settles for $97,500.
  • 2016, Maryland: $500,000 Settlement Our clients, two professional men, are traveling southbound on Route 4 in Calvert County when a USAA insured vehicle loses control and crosses the center median, striking their vehicle on the passenger side. Both men need a discectomy and fusion. USAA pays its entire $500,000 policy.

USAA Closing Financial Centers

In a somewhat surprising move, USAA recently announced that it will be closing all but four of its financial centers.  Why is this happening, and what does it mean for USAA customers?

In many ways, this is a return to USAA's origins.  When I first started using USAA, many moons ago, the Internet was just really getting started and there were no smart phones.  All transactions were handled over the phone and through the mail. (I think I finally threw usaa insurance hours my old postage paid USAA deposit envelopes.)

Over the years, USAA has been an industry leader in figuring out how to use technology to provide more services without building more infrastructure.  USAA was one of the first banks to build a viable banking model that didn't require actual banks, and it was a revolutionary thing. This suited the unique needs of their member base, who lived around the country and around the world.  However, there were always a few complaints about the transactions that were a little easier to do face-to-face.

In 2009, USAA responded to member requests by opening its first "branch" in San Antonio, Texas, quickly followed by several more locations.  Currently located at 21  locations around the country, USAA financial centers offer certain limited banking, insurance, investment and retirement functions, plus a convenient place to put USAA ATMs.

After 7 years of running financial centers, the results are in.  Even with 21 locations, 85% of USAA members live outside the areas serviced by USAA financial centers.   Only 2.5% of members use financial centers for transactions other than ATM use, which is a really small number.   In analyzing the transactions that are occurring at financial centers, nearly everything could be done using the USAA Mobile App or an Fnbstl, and the use of mobile banking continues to increase every year.  Maintaining buildings and staff is expensive when you can accomplish the same results without those constant costs.

As a result, USAA has decided to close all but four financial centers.  Services being offered at the financial centers will be replaced by the USAA Mobile App, the website, expanded ATM capabilities, and there is always the telephone.  More complex transactions such as meeting with a Certified Financial Planner can use technology such as Skype.  In addition, USAA will be victoria secret pink hawaii shirt additional ATMs in areas where financial centers are closing.

What does this mean for you?  If you don't currently use a financial center, your experience will usaa insurance hours change.  If you do currently use a financial center, you will have to adapt to the old/new methods of transacting business with USAA, or move your business to another company.

I have very mixed feelings about this.  On one hand, the numbers certainly support the logic.  Plus, I've never used a USAA financial center, even when I have lived near one.  My business with USAA has always been done over the telephone, through the website.  I do have the USAA app, but I don't use it.  Despite the fact that I'm using old-school technology, I've never felt like it was difficult to do business with USAA usaa insurance hours I didn't have a branch.

On the other hand, this change assumes that members are capable and willing to utilize the USAA app, use the website, or use the telephone.  There are many reasons why these solutions might be challenging.  Not everyone has a smart phone, a computer, or internet service.   Older members may not be comfortable using the USAA mobile app, and smart younger members may be uncomfortable with the security aspects of using the internet to perform certain banking transactions.

Customer service

It seems that somehow, Usaa insurance hours just hires people that are kind and actually, genuinely try to care. I sound like a marketing commercial, but really in 17-ish years, it’s always been whoever answers the phone is just nice or having a good day already. I doubt that that is something that can be trained into your average telephone-job employee if they don’t already have that sort of aptitude or demeanor. I’ve also discovered that if I happen to be having a bad day myself, (and I can be talkative with things like that unfortunately), they always seem to be generous with listening, being kind, patient and agreeable. Woah. It makes me want to buy them a celebratory beer or send them a Christmas or Birthday card or something. Hahaha I think at least one call center is in Pennsylvania? Go PA! :D Or Texas? Go TX! Hahaha
Plus, USAA has a killer website, an awesome array of online or over-the-phone services, but especially they have, I think, nearly the best rates offered by any bank in the country. I don’t know what bank the President or Congress might number 4 worksheets for kindergarten, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they use USAA. I’m confident the commanders of each branch of our military and most if not all other higher ranking officials use USAA. I don’t know the facts, but I am speculating with confidence, so forgive me if I’m wrong. I hope this shows how much I love my bank. It’s aaaaall good.

Pretty good app, but one piece of feedback

I have been using the USAA app for a decade. In the bill pay section. I list my bills, some of which over time I delete when I don’t have a relationship with the biller anymore, some of which I hide so I can reuse them next year for an annual tax payment or such, but some I don’t hide and keep visible although I set up autopay through the biller for things like phone service, a mortgage, internet service, etc. I still want to know about the bill and the amount and due date, but I have no intention of paying the bill through USAA, so I don’t remove the biller info. For those bills, I get the monthly payment info in the app and then it turns red as overdue when I don’t pay it through USAA, even though it was debited or done through my credit card, but then I have to go through an onerous bill filing process to reconcile the monthly bill and the list of options to o reconcile is dated and doesn’t even include autopay/debit. Can USAA make that easier by allowing the biller settings to account for autopsy through the biller so I don’t have to do so much legwork? This part of the app has not changed since the app launched. It needs a revamp. Other than that, I live in this app. USAA has the best banking app out there. I have seen and used others and they fail to stack up against USAA.

Constantly improving & very customer friendly! I recently bought a different car and borrowed part of the cost from my USAA life insurance policy with every intent of paying off the loan at the rate of several hundred $ a month, and made several payments. Then I received a notice on my USAA website that this was temporarily not possible. I called and learned it is a computer problem which was expected to be resolved in 1 week. This has been 2 or 3 weeks ago. The small amount of extra 5% interest that will accumulate is not the problem. Although most of my life insurance is not with USAA, many members may have most of their life insurance with you. Please check to be sure that the computer glitch is not delaying payment of death Benefit payments. If a delay for death benefits is in effect, it may cost USAA another large government fine such as the $130 million one of a few years ago. It would be customer friendly to send msgs to your life insurance customers to advise them about the loan glitch and to reassure them there is no delay in payments of death benefits. You should also consider suspending interest charges on life insurance loans until you fix your computer. Surely you do not intend to earn millions of extra $ because of your own computer problem!
