How much is Amazon Prime, UK wide?

You can pay for the whole package at a cost of £79 each year. Amazon also now let customers pay monthly instead. It costs £7.99 a month, which comes to £95.88 each year.

You can get a 30 day free Amazon Prime trial if you are a new customer, which lets you try out all of the benefits beforehand.

You can cancel it when the trial comes to an end. Alternatively, you can continue Prime membership and start paying the full £79 a year or £7.99 per month if you want to keep the benefits.

Is annual or monthly Amazon Prime membership cheaper?

Paying annually is still cheaper overall at £79 because monthly membership comes to £95.88 per year. But monthly payments are more affordable in the short term and offer more flexibility.

Can students get a discount on Amazon Prime?

Yes, students can get Amazon Prime at half price until they graduate (for up to four years). This comes to £39 per year.

Students can also get a free trial of Amazon Prime that lasts for six months instead of the usual 30 days. This includes exclusive student discounts as well as their free delivery, video, music and photo services.

The free trial does not include Kindle First or access to their lending library.

Sign up to a free trial of Prime Student for six months

How should you pay for Amazon Prime?

You can pay for Prime using the payment method linked to your Amazon account, usually a credit card or debit card.

Your card will be charged either annually or monthly, depending on how you choose to pay. Paying annually is cheaper if you can afford it with money in your bank account or savings.

Alternatively, you could spread the cost of annual membership with a 0% purchases credit card. You can then pay it back over several months without paying interest.

Is Amazon Prime worth the price?

In February 2014, Amazon Prime went from £49 to £79 per year. Whether it is worth its new price tag depends upon how often you are going to use it and working out whether it gives you value for money.

If you only want to use Amazon Prime delivery

To make the £79 cost worthwhile you need to place the equivalent of:

  • 20 or more orders of clothes (£3.95 for one-day delivery)

  • 13 or 14 orders of media (£5.99 one-day delivery)

  • 10 orders of anything else (£7.99 one-day delivery).

If you can wait longer for your order, some of the other delivery options available include:

  • Free delivery is available with a £20 minimum spend on eligible items (products sold or fulfilled by Amazon) and Items will be delivered three to five days after dispatch.

  • Standard delivery is calculated on weight if items are not eligible for free delivery; they are usually delivered within one to two business days after dispatch. Prices start from £1.99 for media weighing up to 0.5 kg and £2.99 on orders weighing more than 0.5 kg. Books cost £2.99 per delivery and all other product types start at £3.99.

  • Express delivery orders placed before the deadline will arrive by 1pm the following day. It costs £6.49 without Amazon Prime and £4.49 with Prime.

  • Same day evening delivery (for selected UK postcodes). These eligible items are delivered between 6pm and 10pm. This is a free service with Amazon Prime but for those without it the service costs £9.99 per delivery.

Being an Amazon Prime customer gets you delivery upgrades. If you need to expedite your delivery, find out more here.

If you rarely order from Amazon

If you are not interested in streaming music and TV, you are probably best off saving £79 and sticking with free super saver delivery on orders of £20 or more, as long as you don't mind waiting three to five days for orders to arrive.

If you rarely order, but are interested in instant streaming, you could try the free trial and see whether you make full use of the service before deciding to take the plunge.

Try all the free trials for Netflix, Now TV and Rakuten too, to see which one you like the best.

Is Amazon Prime Instant Video better than the competition?

At £79 annually, Prime works out at £6.58 a month, which is similar to other streaming video services:

  • Netflix plans start at £5.99 a month

  • Now TV starts at £6.99 per month

However, with Amazon Prime you get the delivery service, music streaming and Kindle library too. If Amazon Prime Instant Video has got your favourite films and shows and you are going to use it for hours on end, you might find it worth the price.

Amazon Prime is available to stream on all Kindle Fire tablets, along with more than 600 other devices, including most computers, consoles, smartphones, tablets and smart TVs.

How good is Amazon Prime's Instant Video content?

Currently, you take your pick of more than 15,000 TV programmes and films.

Amazon has also said it is "investing heavily in exclusive content", which has so far included original shows like Transparent, Extant and the new project from Top Gear's former presenters. Amazon also allows you to download videos to your tablet or mobile so you can watch your favourite videos on the go.

What does Prime Music offer?

Prime Music is Amazon's music streaming service. Its basic service comes with Prime at no extra cost and offers access to around two million songs with no adverts.

It was added to Prime's features in July 2015, and features include:

  • Playing songs on your device or computer through Amazon's website

  • Playing songs using the Amazon Music application on your tablet or smartphone*

  • Downloading songs on your computer or device

  • Creating playlists you can play through the app even when you are offline

*Including Android devices and Apple products

What are Prime Stations?

They are ad-free personalised music streaming stations that have been added to the Prime Music service. You can like and dislike the songs that are played and skip as many as you like.

What is Prime Music Unlimited?

It is an extended streaming service that offers the same features as Prime Music but with a music library of around 40 million songs.

It costs £9.99 per month, but Prime members can get either of these discounts:

  • Paying £7.99 a month (£2 cheaper)

  • Paying £79 upfront for a whole year (£6.58 per month)

You can apply for a 30 day free trial of Amazon Music Unlimited here

How does Prime Music compare to other streaming services?

Other streaming services like Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Apple Music and Google Play are available as a standalone subscription. But Prime Music's basic package can only be accessed as part of the full Amazon Prime service.

It is cheaper than other streaming sites, which charge around £10 per month. Amazon Prime membership can be £6.58 per month and also includes its one day free delivery service, video streaming, photo storage and e-book library.

Its choice of music is more limited, with around two million tracks currently available to UK members. Spotify and Apple Music each offer more than 30 million songs.

However, their Prime Music Unlimited service offers about 40 million songs and is cheaper than most other music streaming services if you add it to the full Prime service.

The Amazon Prime Kindle e-book library

Amazon Prime's Kindle Owners' Lending Library lets you borrow one book per month, which you must return before taking out another one.

While one book is slightly restricting, this is mitigated by the fact that there are half a million books to choose from - which should keep even the fastest reader going for some time.

There are no due dates or deadlines for returning books, and they can be shared between your Kindle devices and Kindle apps (but not across multiple user accounts).

The verdict on Amazon Prime

Whether Amazon Prime is worth it for you will depend entirely on how much use you are going to get from it.

  • If you regularly order from Amazon, pay for a music or TV and movie streaming service and read a lot, Amazon Prime may be worth it

  • If you do not really order enough to justify the £79 price, stream video and music content from another provider and do not have a Kindle, it is unlikely you will find much use for Amazon Prime

How to share Amazon Prime

You can share your Prime benefits with one other adult and up to four children at no extra cost by creating an Amazon Household.

How to cancel Amazon Prime

If you decide to end your Prime membership, head to the login page on amazon.co.uk and sign into your account, go to Manage Your Prime Membership, and select the End membership option (if you have paid) or Do not continue (if you are in the trial period).

Once you have opted out of automatic renewal, you will not get charged after your free trial or current year's membership is up. Of course, if you change your mind and want to carry on, you can sign up again or alter your membership preferences later.

Make the most of your shopping trips by earning cashback, paying 0% interest on purchases and much more by comparing credit card deals.

We'll start with the most obvious. Right now Amazon is offering a 30-day free trial for Amazon Prime. You'll have to enter your payment information and cancel Amazon Prime at the end of the trial if you don't wish to continue.

Now, at this point, if you enjoyed your Prime account, I'm going to encourage you to pay for the annual membership. For my family, it's more than worth it. However, some people might notice that every new account gets a 30-day free trial. So I'll let you make the connection there...💡

Start your 30-day free trial

Are you a student? Amazon Prime Student is a fantastic program offered by Amazon that comes with 6 months of Amazon Prime for free. Plus, at the end of the 6-month trial, you are eligible to receive a 50% discount moving forward.

If you're interested, you'll need the following:

  • A valid school email address
  • A copy of your acceptance letter OR transcripts
  • Student ID with expiration date

Start a 6-month free trial

Amazon Prime Student is a program designed for students. I'm sure it's possible to hijack this deal even if you're not a student, but is it worth the heavy weight on your conscience? Surely not. Honesty pays off.

My wife and I each had our own Amazon Prime account before we got married. And sadly, we continued to pay for two accounts even after we tied the knot. That is, until I found out about Amazon Household.

How Amazon Household works

With Amazon Household, a family (term used loosely) only pays for a single Amazon Prime membership and connect up to two adults, four teens, and four children. The important part is that each person still gets their own account. So you can't go snooping on each other's order history.

Now, I believe this program is intentionally vague. There is no requirement that the two adults are married or that the teens/kids are your children. So if you're living with friends or family that you trust, you may be able to create a Household and ditch any extra memberships being paid for.

Learn more about Amazon Household

Do you have an American Express card? Or do you want one? You get three months of Amazon Prime for free just by entering in your Amex card number. This is effectively a 3-month trial as it only works for new Amazon Prime memberships. Check out the offer details.

Get 3 months free

This may seem like a stretch, but hear me out. There's math involved.

If you need a Prime membership and a credit card, consider using the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card. This offers a whopping 5% cash back (which is pretty good) when you shop on Amazon.com or Whole Foods.

If you spend over $2k a year on Amazon, the card will pay for your Amazon Prime Membership.

Here's the math

In other words, if you spend more than $1980 each year on Amazon, you'll get more than $119 cash back, covering the cost of the membership. Plus there's no annual fee for the card! Spread out of 12 months is each month. This seems like a lot, but if you do a majority of your shopping on Amazon and/or Whole Foods, this totally makes sense.

Obviously, you'll have to account for the tradeoffs of using this card verses other credit cards, but this might make sense for a lot of people.

See Amazon Prime Rewards Card details

I've said this before and I'll say it again, the Amazon Prime membership is worth it. But if you can get it free or cheap, why not take advantage?

In addition to offering free shipping and discounts on eligible purchases, Amazon Prime offers streaming of films and series, as well as exclusive promotions for some products. However, whether due to disuse, to save finances or even at the end of the trial period, it is natural for users to decide to cancel the signature.

The problem is that the Amazon Prime subscription requires the user to enter their bank details, since the amount is automatically deducted from the credit card. Therefore, it is important that the customer knows how to close the registration correctly so that the service does not continue with the charges.

Will You Get Money Back When You Cancel Prime?

I actually called Amazon to see what their official policy was on issuing a refund if you cancel your annual Prime membership before it’s up for renewal.

What I was told was VERY interesting.

Amazon will actually choose the dollar amount to refund you AFTER analyzing how much you used your Prime benefits.

For example, if you used Prime 2-day shipping on FOUR or more orders, I was told you’ll only get a partial refund. They wouldn’t tell me the exact amount they’d refund.

However, if you only used Prime to place one online order, then a FULL refund is definitely possible.

Your best bet to get a refund on Prime is to call Amazon directly at 1-(888) 280-4331 and explain your specific situation.

Ask the Reader: Is Amazon Prime worth the money or are you cancelling because it’s just too expensive? Let me know in the comments, thanks.

Whether you signed up for a free trial that’s approaching its end, or you’ve decided that Amazon Prime just isn’t quite right for you, how to cancel Amazon Prime subscriptions isn’t always obvious.

With so many added extras included, it can often be a struggle to find the right button. And with your card linked to your Amazon account it’s important to ensure you do everything right the first time.

Of course, with Amazon Prime Day giving you access to a huge range of exclusive deals, it might be useful to keep your subscription for a few more days to take advantage. Read our list of Prime Day tips to get the most out of this year's event.

So exactly how do you go about canceling your Amazon Prime?

How to cancel Amazon Prime

The process is actually far easier than you might think. How you cancel depends on your membership status - are you a paying member or on a free trial?

Cancelling a paid Amazon Prime membership

  • Login to your Amazon Prime Account page
  • Go to Manage, then click on Update, Cancel and More
  • Select End Membership
  • Finish by confirming your choice on the next screen

It's worth knowing that any paid members who have not placed an order using their Amazon Prime benefits are eligible for a full refund. And those who have only used the Amazon Prime delivery benefits may be eligible to receive a partial refund.

Cancelling an Amazon Prime Free Trial

If you have signed up to an Amazon Prime 30-day free trial then you are free to cancel this at anytime during this period to avoid it being automatically converted to paid Amazon Prime membership registration. To do this you:

  • Login to your Amazon Prime Account page
  • Go to Manage, then click on Update, Cancel and More
  • Then select End Trial and Benefits
  • Finish by confirming your choice on the next screen

You can then continue to enjoy your Amazon Prime benefits until the 30-day free trial period is over. After this point the registration will be automatically cancelled and your payment method won’t be charged.

It's important to note that, once you have signed up for a free trial once, you won't be able to do it again. So, if you plan on using Prime at another time, it might be worth hanging onto that subscription for a little while.

Forgetful? Use Amazon's reminder email service to help you remember to cancel your subscription

If you’re worried about missing the trial end date, don’t forget to request a reminder email. This can be set to come three days before the registration is renewed or converted. Set it up by:

  • Login to your Amazon Prime Account page
  • Click Manage your subscription, followed by update, cancel and more
  • Then click the box before the text ‘Send me a reminder before renewal’

How to reinstate your Amazon Prime membership

If you’ve cancelled your free trial but decided you can’t quite give up the convenience of Amazon Prime, then never fear.

You can continue enrolling to Amazon Prime after the end of the trial by changing these settings.

We wouldn't blame you, the Amazon Prime benefits are exceptionally useful.

Here's how to cancel Amazon Prime to save money

Amazon Prime is one of the biggest services offered by the massive online retailer. For a monthly or yearly fee, you can get free two-day shipping for millions of items in Amazon’s listings, along with free streaming access to thousands of movies and TV shows, including a growing list of original Amazon Prime Video films and series. There are also many other features that are a part of the service. We’ve already asked the question of whether or not Amazon Prime is worth it. Long story short, there are tons of benefits that will make it worth it for some users. Still, it’s not for everyone. In the post below we’ll tell you how to cancel Amazon Prime.

How to cancel your Amazon Prime membership

The process itself is simple but can be a little tricky to figure out at first.

  1. Go to Your Amazon Account page and then click on “Your Prime Membership.”

This may be the trickiest part of the process, believe it or not. You might think you need to click on the Memberships and Subscriptions section of the Your Account menu to start canceling Amazon Prime. However, you need to go down the menu a bit more to “Your Prime Membership” and click on that to begin the procedure.

  1. Click on the Membership section.

Once you are on your Amazon Prime Membership page, glance on over to the right side where you will see the “Membership” section. Click on it, and you should see an “End Membership” option at the end of the popup menu. Click on that to continue the process of how to cancel Amazon Prime.

  1. Go through the “You will lose these benefits” page.

Yes, Amazon really, really does not want you to cancel your Amazon Prime subscription. After you click on the “End Membership” link, you will then be taken to a page where you will be asked if really want to lose the many benefits of Amazon Prime membership. You have three choices to click, but it’s the one in the bottom middle, “Cancel My Benefits,” that you want to tap on if you really want to continue this process.

  1. Go through the annual membership page.

If you have a monthly subscription to Amazon Prime, the next page you may see will ask you to stick around and pay an annual subscription instead. We will assume you want to cancel Amazon Prime for this post, so simply click on “Continue to Cancel” to keep going with this process.

  1. Make the final choice to cancel Amazon Prime.

In the next page you bring up, you can click on the “Remind Me Later” option to have Amazon send you a reminder email three days before your membership renews. There’s also a “Keep My Membership” option just in case you wanted to go through this whole process but end it at the last minute. Finally, there’s the “End on (renewal date)”, which will cancel Amazon Prime on the date of your membership renewal. If you want to go through with canceling Amazon Prime membership, click on that last option.

  1. Amazon Prime canceled.

You will finally be taken to your main Amazon Prime membership page. It will tell you that your membership will expire on your previous renewal date.

Keep in mind that you can rejoin Amazon Prime at any time for $12.99 a month or $119 a year (plus taxes).

That’s how you can cancel Amazon Prime. Again, it’s a little tricky at first, and Amazon does try its best to keep you around, but if you really want to do away with it, it only takes a few clicks with a mouse or a few taps on a smartphone.

How to Cancel Your Amazon Prime Membership

Amazon Prime offers members a lot of benefits for $119 a year, like free two-day shipping and a well-stocked video library.

However, if you don’t feel like you’re getting much value from the service, and you want to cancel your Amazon Prime membership, then all you have to do is follow these simple steps, and you’ll be free in a matter of minutes.

So, without further ado, here’s how you can cancel your Amazon Prime Membership.

How to Cancel Your Amazon Prime Membership

This how-to guide and figures mentioned below have been compiled from various sources around the web, such as Amazon & Wikipedia.

Here’s how to cancel your Amazon Prime Membership:

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is a paid subscription service from Amazon that provides users with additional benefits when compared to standard Amazon accounts.

Prime benefits include premium unlimited free delivery, usually within one-or-two days, music and video streaming, unlimited photo storage through Amazon Photos, and a rotating library of free Kindle eBooks, magazines, and comics.

Membership costs $12.99 a month or $119 per annum at the time of writing, and Amazon offers new users a free 30-day trial.

For many, the value of a Prime membership outweighs the cost. However, if you feel like you’re not getting the most out of your membership, then here’s how you can cancel Amazon Prime.

Canceling Your Amazon Prime Membership

To cancel your Amazon Prime membership, follow these five simple steps:

1. Sign Into Amazon

Head over to Amazon’s website and log in to your account with your username and password.

Hover over the “Accounts & Lists”  drop-down menu in the upper right-hand side of your screen and click “Sign In.”

2. Locate Your Prime Membership

Once you’ve gained access to your account, hover over “Accounts & Lists” and select “Your Prime Membership.”

Or, if you prefer, you can click “Accounts & Lists” and then select “Prime,” which will take you to your “Benefits & Payments” settings.

3. Click End Membership & Benefits

On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see “End Membership & Benefits,” located under the “Membership Management” section.

Click the link, and you’ll be taken to the final cancelation page, where canceling your Amazon Prime membership will begin.

4. Click End My Benefits

Amazon doesn’t want to see you go, so you’ll be prompted by a new page that will ask you if you’re sure you want to leave.

If you’re not 100% sure that you want to cancel yet, Amazon offers a reminder feature that reminds you three days before your membership renews, while allowing you to continue to use all your Prime benefits in the meantime, giving you a little more time to make your mind up.

However, if you’re adamant that you still want to cancel your Amazon Prime account, then click “End My Benefits” and continue to the final stage.

5. Continue to Cancel

In a last-ditch effort to keep your business, Amazon will ask you to switch to a monthly plan if you’ve been paying annually.

If that’s not for you, then click the “Continue to Cancel” button, and your Amazon Prime membership will discontinue at the end of the period you’ve paid for. The same applies if you were paying monthly.

And that’s that. Your Amazon Prime membership has been canceled.

How to Cancel Amazon Prime Trial

If you decide that Amazon Primes’ not for you, here’s what you need to do to cancel your free trial.

The trial auto-renews into a full prime membership after 30 days, so make sure to set a reminder to cancel it within the 30 day trial period.

“At the end of a free trial period, you’ll be automatically converted to a paid annual membership” – Amazon

To cancel your Amazon Prime trial, log in to your Amazon account, and navigate your way to “Manage Your Prime Membership.”

From there, on the left-hand side of the page, click the “Cancel Free Trial” link if you wish to cancel it now and stop receiving all the benefits.

Alternatively, you can choose “Do not Continue,” and you’ll still have access to all the benefits of Prime until the end of your free trial. Once your free trial ends, your membership will cancel, and your card will not be charged.

“You will continue to enjoy your Amazon Prime benefits until your 30-day free trial period is over. Your registration will then be automatically cancelled and your payment method will not be debited.” – Amazon

Can I get another free trial of Amazon Prime?

That depends on when your last free trial was, but the short answer is Yes!

Amazon customers are only eligible for one free trial of Amazon Prime every 12 months.

So, if you decide you want to go ahead with a Prime membership, but you’ve already canceled your free trial, then you’ll have to start with a paid membership to access the benefits of Prime.

However, if it’s been more than a year after your first free trial, then you’ll be able to sign up for another 30-day free trial through your existing Amazon account.

You’ll more than likely notice some free trial ads on your account homepage and a promotional email or two if you’ve signed up for Amazons email notifications.

Will I get a refund of my membership fee?

If you cancel your membership within three days of signing up, or within three days of converting from a free trial to a paid membership, then you can expect to receive a full refund of your membership fee.

However, if at any point within the three business day period, you used any of the Prime benefits, Amazon will charge you the value of the prime benefits used.

Amazon will offer you a full or partial refund of your membership fee depending on the benefits used:

“Paid members who have not placed an order using the benefits of Amazon Prime are eligible for a full refund. Paying members who have only used Amazon Prime delivery benefits may be eligible for a partial refund. If the other benefits (Prime Video, Prime Music, Twitch) have been used, members are not eligible for a refund” – Amazon

So, if you haven’t used any of the benefits since your card was charged, then you should be eligible for a full refund.

For example, if your membership renewed at the end of June and you realize in mid-July that you want to cancel your membership, then you’re entitled to a full refund unless you had used any Prime services or placed a Prime order.

How to get a Prime membership for less

If you’re not willing to pay $119 a year for full membership, then here’s a couple of ways you can still get access to some of the benefits of Prime, at a fraction of the cost.

The first way is for anyone that likes to make most of their purchases at certain times of the year. If that’s you, then sign up for an Amazon Prime free trial, or start a monthly subscription, load up on all your purchases in one go, and cancel the membership after you’ve completed your order.

It takes some planning, but if done right, you could benefit from free shipping, within one-or-two days, bulk discounts, and you’ll only have to make those purchases once or twice a year depending on your schedule.

Just bear in mind that if you don’t cancel your membership and leave the monthly payment going, it will end up costing you more across a year, $155.88 to be exact, than if you were to have bought an annual membership.

If you’re not the type of person that uses Amazon a lot for shopping, but you’d still like to use their streaming services, then you can purchase a Prime Video membership for $8.99, saving you quite a lot over a year when compared to the standard $12.99 membership fee.

Summary

We hope our how-to cancel your Amazon Prime membership guide was helpful!

Amazon Prime is undoubtedly an excellent service, there’s no question about that, but it’s not what you’d call an essential service.
