I am decidedly not a gamer. Never was in my wheelhouse. I would avoid playing Mario Kart with boys after school, instead talking with their moms about more adult-oriented topics. It wasn't because I particularly wanted to know about Mrs. Ramsey's second marriage, I just didn't want to be embarrassed by the fact that my hand-eye coordination wasn't up to snuff. I would ask the boys if they wanted more pizza rolls. They'd nod. I'd go back to Mrs. Ramsey. I settled on the idea that perhaps gaming was not for me.

Cut to 2020. I am still very much not a gamer, but I do get the opportunity to dip my toe into that world on occasion, which is why I was fired up when I got the chance to test out the Oculus Quest 2. The all-in-one virtual reality headset will release to the public on October 13 (you can pre-order now), and it hails from Oculus VR, a Facebook company. That made me a bit nervous, as another way for Facebook to take a stake in my life, but data be damned. I logged in with my account, set up the internet connection, and the world was at my literal and virtual fingertips. Then, when presented with the option to shoot global terrorists with a machine gun or go on a tour of the Notre Dame cathedral, I decided to just go to the living room.

Let me explain.

Oculus Quest 2 (64GB)

Pre-Order

You see, the Oculus Quest 2 has a Netflix app, and while I know that there are probably gamers out there reading this, livid that I would waste a Quest 2 by simply using it to watch Netflix, they don't understand. Have you seen this goddamn Netflix living room? I ignorantly thought that Netflix in VR might mean you'd be thrown into a stretched out, 180-degree version of your favorite series—The Good Place, The Great British Baking Show, whatever. No, no. In this app, Netflix gives you opulence. Netflix gives you art. Seated on a plush red (VR) couch, the (VR) television screen you watch Netflix on is approximately twelve feet tall, surrounded by intricate (VR) stonework, and to your left, there is a massive three-paned (VR) window that reveals the snowcapped mountains of what I assume are the Alps. I can't confirm this for you; I'm a journalist, not a geographer. What you need to know is that the virtual reality experience of Netflix is less about being immersed in the entertainment and more about going somewhere better than where you are right now.

Courtesy

And sure, the couch and the remote and the magazines on the table may not conjure the same type of realism you get from reaching down and touching your actual couch, but after a few minutes in the Netflix app, you really do get this feeling that you're sitting in a luxury cabin with vaulted ceilings. Actually, it's easy to get distracted. While some of the other streamers available on the Quest 2 (Amazon and YouTube, to be exact) offer somewhat crude 180-degree renderings, Netflix's goes beyond what's right there in front of you, offering 360 degrees of fully immersive experience. Look behind you. Look above you. It's one of the only apps I experienced that covered every angle. And the built-in speaker is nestled right by your ear, fooling you into believing you have enough money to afford surround sound. To be frank, it's a hell of a lot nicer than my actual reality. So nice, in fact, that I forgot where I lived for a while.

Courtesy

I think one reason I hadn't really considered getting in on the virtual reality fun is because it didn't look particularly comfortable. I don't care if you can teleport me to Mars—if I don't have a cushy seat, I'll pass. But the lightweight nature, foam lining, and adjustable straps of the Quest 2 really do make it possible to enjoy what you're watching without a lot of attention to this... thing on your head. So there I was, just me and my Netflix queue in my high-end cabin in the mountains. Well, until the battery ran low about three hours in.

After I put the headset on charge and went back to what I now call "Peasant Netflix," I kept thinking about why I preferred that other world so much. My couch isn't plushy and red, but it's fine. My TV isn't a dozen feet tall, but it's plenty serviceable. More than anything, they're both real. I think that's the key to virtual reality, be it lifestyle apps or gaming or fitness programs (the Quest 2 has all three). It's in our nature to want things we don't have, and if we can't have-have them, then we like to live in the illusion. Hell, it doesn't matter if the vacation is bad as long as it looks good on Instagram, right?

Now, in this moment, virtual reality is so much more palatable than reality-reality. In this fantasy world, you can go outside without a mask on. You can afford to travel the globe and work out at a fancy gym, because financial demands are limited to a $299 Quest 2 price tag (plus however much your desired app costs). Technically speaking, part of the reason that the Quest 2 is able to bring fantasy to life is because its technical specs are top of its class. But on a more cerebral scale, it feeds into our greatest fantasies, no matter how base they may seem. Mine happens to feature a $20 million chalet in the Alps (I've been pricing them out; sue me). And it all exists for me, within a one-pound machine that you put over your eyes.

For gamers, the Quest 2 represents the next big adventure, no matter which VR title they claim as their favorite. For a VR rookie like me, the Quest 2 is more of a lifestyle elevation. Is it tacky to want what you can't have? Maybe. But when it's packaged neatly in a compact headset, what's the hurt? And if you're not a mountains person, that's fine. The Quest's home screen has different settings to choose from; the default was a tropical resort. Not my tempo. I'll keep my mountains. The only add-on I might suggest is finding a way to get Mrs. Ramsey on the couch next to me. We have some catching up to do between episodes.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Market, By Type (Chromosomal Abnormalities, Aneuploidy, X-linked diseases, Single-gene disorders, HLA Typing, Gender Selection, Others (for disability, adult-onset disease)), By End User (Diagnostic Laboratories, Hospitals, Clinics), and By Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa) – Size, Share Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2020 – 2027

A preimplantation genetic diagnosis can be used to examine for aneuploidy in patients with a poor prognosis who choose in vitro fertilization. It is also useful in detecting inherited single gene abnormalities, X-linked disorders, and, more recently, late-onset illnesses.

Statistics:

The global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market was worth US$ 53.5 million in 2020 and is expected to grow to US$ 81.6 million by 2027.

Global Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Market: Drivers

The rising prevalence of genetic disorders is expected to drive the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market growth during the forecast period. According to the report, ‘Estimating Nationwide Prevalence of Live Births with Down’s Syndrome and Their Medical Expenditures in Korea,’ issue of the Journal of Korean Medical Science in August 2019, the incidence of babies born with Down syndrome was 5.03 for every 10,000 births during 2007 and 2016.

Furthermore, the growing number of fertility clinics is expected to fuel the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market growth over the forecast period. For instance, Oregon Reproductive Medicine, a fertility center in November 2018 opened the ORM South in Tigard, Oregon.

To get a Free Sample Copy of COVID-19 Impact Analysis Report: https://www.coherentmarketinsights.com/insight/request-sample/698

Statistics:

Chromosomal Abnormalities accounted for the largest share in the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market in 2019, contributing for 20.1% of market share, trailed by X-linked diseases and Aneuploidy.

Global Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Market: Restraints

The lack of transferable embryos is expected to hamper the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market growth over the forecast period. The absence of normal transferable embryos occurs in nearly one-third of couples who choose preimplantation genetic diagnostic cycles. This could be due to the fact that some women have a weak response to ovarian stimulation, resulting in fewer eggs being produced. In other instances, despite the abundance of a sufficient number of embryos, the chromosomal value is continuously abnormal.

Furthermore, couples who have previously failed in IVF or preimplantation genetic diagnostic cycles have very poor potential for future success. These drawbacks hinder the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market growth over the forecast period.

Global Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Market: Opportunities

The use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis in oncology is expected to provide attractive growth prospects for major players in the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market. Preimplantation genetic testing can reduce the possibility of conceiving a cancer-affected pregnancy. It can aid in determining the embryo’s gender, and only genetically compatible embryos will be placed, allowing a healthy pregnancy to be conceived.

Furthermore, advancements in DNA technology will enhance the precision of preimplantation genetic diagnosis, boosting the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market growth over the forecast period.

The global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market was worth US$ 50.3 million in 2019 and is expected to increase to US$ 81.6 million by the end of 2027, growing at a CAGR of 6.2% during the forecast period 2020 – 2027.

For instance, Agilent Technologies Inc. launched OnePGT, a genome-wide next-generation sequencing (NGS) system for preimplantation genetic testing, in December 2018.

Furthermore, the expanding network of fertility clinics is expected to propel the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market growth over the forecast period. For instance, Prelude Fertility collaborated with NYU Langone Health in October 2018 to open the NYU Langone Fertility Center.

Global Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Market: Competitive Landscape

Some of the key players contributing to the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis are Reproductive Genetics Institute, Inc., Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings, PerkinElmer, Inc., Abbott Laboratories, CombiMatrix Corporation, F. Hoffman-La-Roche Ltd, CooperGenomics Inc., Quest Diagnostics, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., Invitae Corporation, Vertex, Genentech Inc., Natera Inc., Illumina, Inc., Amgen, and Genea Ltd.

Global Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis Market: Key Developments

Key players in the global preimplantation genetic diagnosis market are focusing on partnerships and collaborative approaches to increase their market position. For instance, Thermo Fisher Scientific in July 2020 announced a collaboration with First Genetics JCS, a manufacturing company of diagnostic devices and IVD kits aimed at advancing molecular genetic technologies into clinical practice, to commercialize next-generation sequencing (NGS)–based diagnostics in Russia.

But the lightweight nature, foam lining, and adjustable straps of the Quest 2 really do make it possible to enjoy what you're watching without a lot of attention to this. bank of america historical stock price on your head.

Virtual reality can be an arresting way to step into engaging virtual worlds, even if it’s still a new technology that remains far from being a “most people” purchase. We think the Oculus Quest 2 is the best headset for most people because it’s the easiest to use and offers access to the widest range of games and experiences. However, Facebook owns Oculus, so you’ll need an account to use a Quest 2.

You can spend thousands of dollars chasing the best specs in a VR headset, but we think comfort and ease of use are more important elements for most people who want to explore VR. With that in mind, the Oculus Quest 2 is the clear winner. It combines good-enough specs with the ability to use it cord free, but you can also plug it into a computer, which opens up even more options for how and where you can use it. The controllers are intuitive and easy to hold. It can track you as you move around a room. And it doesn’t take much time to set up. Additionally, the Quest 2 has a wide selection of compatible content because you can download games, movies, and other experiences from both the Oculus and SteamVR libraries.

Who should get this

Virtual reality can make you feel like you’ve been transported to another world—or at the very least like you are experiencing a wonderfully novel piece of technology. Short films, puzzles, social networks, and other types of VR entertainment are available. But if you’re not into video games, the only VR-ready medium that can offer hours of immersive entertainment, you may grow bored fairly quickly. With that in mind, only gamers or technophiles with fairly deep pockets should seriously consider a VR setup at this time.

Remember that it’s still a developing technology. You’re basically a guinea pig helping developers figure out how the headsets should be used.

Virtual reality games are different from games on traditional consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation. Motion-tracking controllers, which bring your hands into the virtual world, are more intuitive for beginners: Swinging a sword feels more like swinging a sword, throwing a mug at a robot feels (kind of) like throwing a mug, ducking for cover can require real ducking. This makes play more immersive and intuitive than with regular video games, where your movements rely on your pressing the right combinations of buttons on a controller. For example, I’ve never been a fan of Halo or Gears of War, but I immediately had fun playing shooter games in VR. On the other hand, an experienced gamer (but VR beginner) told me during testing that he was annoyed that VR still had a learning curve at all.

If you decide to try VR, go in with an open mind and a sense of adventure, and remember that it’s still a developing technology. There are already some great VR experiences, like the heart-pumping Beat Saber. But you’re still basically a guinea pig helping developers figure out how the headsets should be used. Expect your headset to become obsolete within a matter of years.

Outside of pandemic times, it’s a good idea to go to a store to test a few VR systems for yourself; Oculus and HTC publish maps of locations where you can test headsets. If you’re skeptical of VR and can’t try it ahead of time, you have trouble enjoying the experience at the store, or you aren’t completely excited about the idea of exploring at home, a VR headset is probably not for you.

How we picked

While searching for VR systems to test, we read comparison guides from PCMag, Wired, and CNET. We also interviewed Road to VR co-founder Ben Lang and former Svrf CEO Sophia Dominguez on what to look for in a VR headset.

We considered only headsets that were built for home use, had the ability to track hand and body movements, and quest 360 care login controllers—without those features, you lose most of the magic of VR. We think the best headsets also have the following features:

  • Room-scale tracking: Whether the sensors are built into the headset or meant to be mounted on a wall, the headset you buy should come with the ability to track you across an area the size of an average living room.
  • Freedom of movement: The headset can switch between corded and cord-free experiences, which allows for maximum freedom of movement and portability.
  • Variety of content: Games and applications should be available across a variety of genres. There should also be evidence that developers are continuing to develop for the headset.
  • Comfort: The headset should sit snugly on a variety of face shapes without being painful. It shouldn’t feel too heavy or get too hot. While we usually conduct a test panel to check for fit on different face shapes, during the pandemic we’ve relied on forums and other journalists’ reports instead.
  • Industry-leading specs: The screen resolution, sensors, weight, and size should be in line with those of other top VR headsets. Good display specs in particular assist in creating a better VR experience because they help you forget that you are looking at a screen instead of something real.
  • Good controllers: The controllers should be comfortable to hold, and they shouldn’t have overly complicated button layouts.
  • Built-in sound: Although audiophiles who already own high-end headphones will appreciate a headphone jack, most people don’t already own headphones that are nice enough for VR (and good sound really does make VR more immersive). Headsets with high-quality built-in headphones or speakers eliminate an extra accessory to buy and still leave open the option of swapping in your own pair if you care to.

How we tested

Three different models of virtual reality headsets sit in a row on a wooden table.

As VR has matured, we’ve continued to test new models against old favorites. In an initial round of testing in 2016, we set up and tested the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, and then had four VR beginners (with gaming experience levels ranging from zero to expert) use each system too. In 2018, we tested the standalone Oculus Go and the Lenovo Mirage Solo against mobile VR headsets. We also tested the Vive Pro against the Rift. In 2019, we added the Oculus Quest to our testing lineup and pitted the Rift against the Rift S. We tested the Oculus Quest 2 and Vive Cosmos Elite in 2020.

Though we used to have separate picks for PC, standalone, and mobile VR headsets, we’ve grown convinced over the years that cordless headsets like the Oculus Quest 2 are the best option for anyone looking for their first headset. As a result, while we continue to test and discuss the latest PC-connected and mobile headsets, we no longer recommend them for most people.

I spend at least three hours in each VR system myself. Comfort is important, especially for first-timers. VR should maximize immersion—the sense that you’re in a virtual world. Discomfort is one of the quickest ways to break that sense. I noted where each headset concentrated weight on my head, and how my level of comfort changed over the course of a long VR session.

I also carefully evaluated each system’s hand controllers, because intuitive controls make games feel much more real. Controller designs vary slightly, with different buttons and a different feel in your hand.

For my PC headset testing, I plugged the headsets into my home computer, a CyberPowerPC quest 360 care login that met the minimum requirements for the headsets.

Our pick: Oculus Quest 2

The bright white Oculus Quest 2, our pick for best virtual reality headset, flanked by two white hand controllers.

The Oculus Quest 2 makes it easier—and fun enough to be worth it—to give VR a try compared with headsets that require cables and expensive PCs. The Quest quest 360 care login has two capable controllers and is compatible with some of our favorite games. It’s also small enough to toss into a tote bag or a backpack, so you can break it out at the office or a party (or could, if you didn’t need to safely distance from others). You can set it up and start playing in less than a minute; thanks to built-in sensors that track the two Touch controllers and your other movements, you can navigate an entire room, and the headset won’t ever lose your location. As a result, we consistently reach for it over headsets that cost two or even three times as much.

By default, the Quest 2 is cordless. Sensors for tracking your head and hands are built into the headset and controllers, which means you can walk around the entirety of a room and your virtual body will do the same. Although a PC headset with more-precise tracking, such as the Valve Index or the HTC Cosmos Elite, can better replicate your movement and avoid reality-breaking glitches, like your hands floating away, we found the Quest 2 convincing enough to cross that initial threshold into “realness.” The ability to play without a cord also means you aren’t pulled out of a game when you inevitably trip on the cable tethering you to a PC.

However, many of the best VR games require a connection to a PC to give the headset additional processing power. We think the Oculus Link cable is a worthy buy for any Quest 2 owner because it allows you to play PC games on the headset, unlocking the full Oculus and SteamVR libraries. Facebook recognizes that this leaves few reasons to buy the tethered Oculus Rift S, which it will stop selling in 2021.

There’s plenty to do inside a Quest 2 headset. We welcomed the return of several of our favorite games, including the addictive Beat Saber, which on its own could be justification to buy the Quest. We also like the Matrix-like Superhot, the 3D-painting experience Tilt Brush, the battle royale-style Population: One and the adventure-puzzle game Moss. If you have a PC, you can plug in the Quest 2 (using the separate Oculus Link cable) and play the critically acclaimed Half-Life: Alyx or the new Star Wars: Squadrons.

The Quest 2’s LCD screen offers 1832×1920 pixels per eye, which healthily beats out the Rift S and higher-end headsets like the Valve Index, though the differing style in the screens makes it a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. It’s one of the first headsets that didn’t regularly give us the “screen door effect,” which is a light grid laid over your field of view. The Quest currently has a maximum refresh rate (think of this as the VR way of saying “frames per second”) of 72 Hz, though Facebook plans to push it to 90 Hz sometime in the future, according to a Facebook spokesperson. Meanwhile, the Rift S already sports a 80 Hz refresh rate, and the Cosmos Elite comes in at 90 Hz. We didn’t find the difference noticeable. That said, higher refresh rates are generally believed to reduce the likelihood that users might experience motion sickness while using a VR headset.

At a claimed 503 grams (1.1 pound), the Quest is a hair heavier than we prefer for our VR headsets (it’s like hanging a half-liter bottle of water from your face). But due to cushy foam padding that rests on your face and adjustable straps that reach around to the back of your head, we found that the Quest 2 is fairly comfortable to wear for hour-long play sessions, though we had to fiddle with the fit to get it to sit correctly. The headset’s strap is a downgrade in quality and comfort from every other Oculus headset. If you care enough to want to change it, you have to shell out $50 extra for the halo-stye Elite Strap.

A close up of the buttons on the hand controllers of the Oculus Quest 2, our <b>quest 360 care login</b> for best virtual reality headset.

The Quest 2’s Touch controllers, which are similar to the original Rift Touch controllers, are our favorite style of VR controller. The two controllers are molded to sit in your hand, with your pointer fingers resting on triggers and your middle fingers resting on “grip” buttons. Your thumbs can reach a small joystick, plus A, B, and home buttons. Sensors built into the headset track the location of the controllers, so moving your hands physically moves them in VR. The Quest 2’s controllers are intuitive to use and easy to hold for long periods. While Ars Technica reports that the newer controllers are less accurate than those that came with the original Quest, Tested notes that they seem to simply operate in a different way. In practice, we didn’t notice a change in quality between the controllers. The lack of external sensors that a headset like the Valve Index uses to carefully replicate your hand movements in VR might be missing here, but we found the Quest 2’s controllers still accurate enough to fly through difficult levels of Beat Saber without frustration.

Interestingly, the Quest 2 also gives you the option to ditch the controllers and use just your hands to interact with menus and some games. We found the tracking to be functional, but fairly inaccurate; if you move your hands too far away from the headset, it loses sight of them and you’re no longer in control. You also need to learn a series of gestures, such as pinches and drags, which means the learning curve is just as steep as using the controllers. We think hand tracking has long-term potential for even more natural gameplay, but we didn’t find it intuitive enough to choose over the controllers for now.

It’s like hanging a half-liter bottle of water from your face.

Like the Oculus Rift S, the Quest 2 does not have built-in headphones. Instead, it has built-in speakers that direct 3D sound toward your ears. The Quest 2’s audio quality is good enough for immersive VR (and sounds even better than the original Quest), though it isn’t as clear as you’d get with a pair of nice headphones.Thankfully, you can plug in your own headphones (or buy the $50 earbuds that Facebook advertises) on either side of it. We do like the open-ear setup in a social setting, where the speakers can clue onlookers in on what the person wearing the headset is seeing.

Facebook says that the Quest 2’s battery lasts two to three hours, though we found it fell closer to the two-hour mark. That’s plenty of time for solo play. However, when we’ve used cordless headsets with friends, we have always ended up running out of battery power. You can use the Quest 2 while it’s plugged in, though you won’t be able to move around as much when you’re connected to a cable. We managed to play Beat Saber with the headset plugged in for a while, but we eventually ripped the cord out of the socket.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Facebook now requires you to log in with a Facebook account to use Oculus headsets. People who are against using Facebook or having their Facebook identity connected to their Oculus account might consider it a dealbreaker. There’s nothing stopping you from using a burner account, but that might not be acceptable to some on principle and Facebook requiring users to use their legal name will still raise privacy concerns. If you fall under that category, an HTC or Valve headset might be more to your liking.

No one has gotten the strap quite right on a VR headset. I usually wear my long hair down or in a ponytail and have yet to use a strap that doesn’t slide around or bunch up my hair. The Quest 2’s strap lacks padding and doesn’t distribute weight on the back of the head as well as a halo-style strap, and we think many people will choose to upgrade to the Elite Strap. However, we didn’t find it so irritating that it detracted from our gameplay.

Although the Quest 2’s Touch controllers are the most comfortable to hold and use, they lost sight of our hands more often than headsets that use exterior sensors you place around the room to track the location of your body and hands. The Quest 2 is built with inside-out tracking, which means the headset uses cameras to track lights emitted by the controllers. Throw your hands behind your back and you might find your virtual hands no longer respond when you move the controllers. In my experience, as long as the room was well lit and I kept the controllers in front of me, this didn't seem to be much of an issue.

As is the case with any other VR headset, it feels hot inside the Quest. The foam face pad can quickly become soaked with sweat when you play an active game like Beat Saber. If you plan to share the headset with friends, it may be a good idea to pick up a few disposable masks.

We found the new way to adjust the Quest 2’s lenses puzzling; instead of a lever on the outside of the headset to change interpupillary distance to account for different faces and eyesight, you have to reach into the headset and push directly on the lenses. That means you can’t adjust it with the headset on and are at a higher risk of dirtying the lenses.

Finally, it’s worth questioning whether you’re willing to drop $300-plus on what is still very much an emerging technology. It’s possible that an even better headset will come along in a year or two. And while the Quest 2’s $300 price tag might sound incredibly cheap compared with the competition, it’s likely you’ll want to tack on a few accessories that come standard with more expensive headsets. To get the most out of the Quest 2, you’ll also want to buy a PC and Link cable. Then, there are the extra accessories to consider. If you already own a PlayStation and care more about getting a cheap headset than one with the best specs, it may make sense to save some money by buying a PSVR system (though we aren’t big fans of its screen or controllers).

What about the HTC Vive Cosmos headsets?

The sleek black HTC Vive Cosmos headset, flanked by two black hand controllers and two base station cubes.

If an aversion to buying something from the Facebook-owned Oculus or a loyalty to Steam is holding you back from buying a Quest 2, or if stock shortages are an issue and you don’t want to wait to get a VR headset, we think the HTC Vive Cosmos or Cosmos Elite are among the few worthwhile alternatives. These sets have nice screens and some interesting future-proofing features that might give them more longevity. However, the Cosmos and Cosmos Elite are much more expensive despite being saddled with additional frustrations. We haven’t tested the Valve Index yet, but for the money, reviews suggest it may be a better buy (if you can even get your hands on it).

The Cosmos and Cosmos Elite have varying levels of abilities. For example, the Cosmos has controllers that look a bit like the Oculus Touch, and the Cosmos Elite has wand-style controllers. It’s most important to know that whereas the Cosmos tracks you with sensors built into the headset (much as the Quest 2 does), the Cosmos Elite system adds external base stations that improve tracking. HTC sells swappable faceplates that allow you to more or less upgrade a Cosmos into the higher-spec Cosmos Elite. The Cosmos headset quest 360 care login tested featured the external tracking faceplate, Elite wand-style controllers, and external tracking base stations, all of which essentially turned it into a Cosmos Elite. If you know you want external tracking, it’s hundreds of dollars cheaper to buy the Cosmos Elite instead of purchasing add-on accessories for the Cosmos (which have been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic).

The Cosmos line has a much lengthier setup than the Quest 2 does; the headset plugs into a connector, which then has three additional cords that plug into your PC and power outlet. If you’re using a Cosmos Elite or add-ons such as the external tracking faceplate, you also need to install two base stations: small black boxes that act as external sensors for tracking your location. The base stations need to sit on a high shelf or be mounted on the wall, and also require an outlet. That means the Cosmos Elite demands six cords and three outlets total.

Reviews suggest that the Cosmos does a decent job of tracking you as you move around a room but suffers without external sensors. With the base stations we used during testing, the Cosmos Elite did a bit better. However, we were still able to find blind spots where a player’s body blocked the stations’ view—fairly inconvenient when you’re about to shoot a zombie in the face. Mounting the stations higher likely would have solved the problem, but that means you may face difficulties just setting them on furniture or shelves you already have.

We dislike quest 360 care login wand-style controllers sold with the Cosmos Elite and older headsets like the Vive Pro. They aren’t as natural to hold as the Oculus Touch controllers. As Robertson at The Verge explains: “The Cosmos controllers are bigger and heavier than the Oculus Touch, and they require twice as many AA batteries, two for each controller. They seem carefully designed, featuring super clicky buttons and an extra gamepad-style bumper above each trigger. But they’re awkward and bulky.”

Similar to the Rift S, the Cosmos headsets have a halo-like design. I didn’t think the headset I tested rested on my face as nicely as the Rift S, which is a complaint I’ve had about every Vive headset I’ve tried. It’s still wearable for an hour or two at a time. However, adjusting the pupillary distance, which changes the distance between the lenses for different types of eyes, is more difficult; I never found a setting that made the screen look especially sharp.

The Cosmos and Jpmorgan chase account login Elite have built-in, fold-down headphones that were comfortable to wear and sounded convincing enough to my ears. That’s a convenient improvement over the speakers in the Quest 2, but one that you can easily match with a good pair of headphones plugged into the Quest 2.

Although Facebook might have a slight edge on content for its headset, you wouldn’t feel like you’re missing much on a Cosmos since you download games for Vive headsets on Steam, a content library that PC gamers are likely to already use. You can also download or launch games from within a living-room-like space inside the headset, and we think there are plenty of games, movies, and other experiences to keep anyone busy.

What about the Sony PlayStation VR?

We think the Quest 2 is a better headset in almost every way, but if you own a PlayStation 4 and want to play higher-powered VR games without spending the money on a gaming PC, the Sony PlayStation VR headset could work for you. The PSVR can’t track you as you roam around a room as effectively as its competitors from Oculus and HTC can, and its specs and controllers lag behind the competition in quality. However, it is easy to set up, has a solid game library, and has good enough specs to provide VR’s wow-inducing sense of immersion in alternate realities, all without requiring you to buy a $700-plus PC.

With the PS5 on the way, Sony may be preparing a next-generation VR headset. If you’re on the fence, it wouldn’t hurt to wait a year and see what the company releases.

What about mobile VR?

The Merge mobile VR headset on a tan background.

Using a mobile VR headset is a bit like cracking open a Cup Noodles container when you’re in the mood for ramen: wildly underwhelming but cheap, and okay in a pinch. Mobile headsets are essentially a plastic shell that have a slot for a high-end smartphone; for less than $50, they give you access to content like short movies, adventure games, and puzzles for adults and kids. They’re easy to set up compared with a high-end desktop VR headset, and they are portable enough that you can wear them on a plane or bring them to a friend’s house for show-and-tell.

Mobile VR headsets are just too underpowered to compete with a headset like the Quest 2. But if you need the cheapest headset possible, we think the Merge VR Headset is the best VR headset that uses a phone as its screen. Of the seven cheap headsets we tested, it offers the best combination of low cost, comfort, and adjustability. It can also be used for augmented reality or paired with extras like Merge’s curated VR library or the Cube augmented-reality accessory. The quality won’t blow your mind, but it’s good enough for a few experiences.

However, you should buy a mobile headset only if you are determined to try basic VR experiences as cheaply as possible. In most cases, the point of using VR is to be transported to a virtual world where a movie or game feels nearly real. Mobile headsets aren’t powerful enough to do that; they can’t run high-end games or track your hands. The space has also seen an incredible amount of turmoil, with discontinuations of flagship headsets like the Google Daydream View and Samsung Gear VR. It’s hard to say which headsets will still be around in a year.

Mobile VR headsets can still make sense in certain niche cases, such as in education, real estate, or training scenarios where a lot of inexpensive headsets are needed; however, once you build in the cost of buying a phone to go with each headset, headsets like the Quest 2 are actually cheaper.

Getting ready for VR

If you want to use the Quest 2 or a PC headset to their full potential, you need a powerful gaming computer and, ideally, an empty room to set it up in. (The Quest 2 will suggest virtually marking off a 6.5-by-6.5-foot area, minimum, though you can play games with less than that if you’re sure you won’t run into anything). Both Oculus and HTC have pages featuring compatible VR-ready PCs and bundles, and both list minimum and recommended PC specs (Oculus’s list is here, and HTC’s is here) for use with their systems. Both headset makers also offer tools that you can download to test whether your current PC is VR-ready. The headsets have similar requirements, so a PC that works with one should work with the other.

A desktop PC with the bare-minimum specs to run a VR headset costs about $800 without a monitor, mouse, keyboard, or speakers. It’s worth spending more if you can. If you prefer to build your own rig, IGN and Logical Increments offer decent parts lists for several budgets.

What to look forward to

We’re just finishing up an update to this guide, and we’re going to recommend a new upgrade pick: the HTC Vive Pro 2 headset and two base stations with Valve Index controllers. Though no VR headset is perfect yet, the Vive Pro 2 has the best screen quality of any we’ve tried. Combined with a PC that has serious processing and graphics capabilities, the experience in-game is truly another level. But at nearly $1500 for the bundle—plus the cost of a great PC—this is a setup we only recommend to people who really value getting the best from their games. Most people looking for light VR fun (or workouts) will be more than happy with the simplicity and freedom of a Quest 2. We’ll have the rest of our thoughts and testing published before the end of the year.

The competition

PC headsets

We still think there’s a lot to like about the Oculus Rift S and Oculus Rift, each of which was at one point our top pick for a headset. However, with Facebook doubling down on the Link technology, it’s safe to say that these headsets are no longer the company’s focus. It’s a safer investment (and cheaper) to go with a Quest 2.

The discontinued HTC Vive Pro builds on the original Vive’s strengths and has a noticeably better screen, built-in headphones, and a more comfortable strap. HTC now sells a similar headset with added eye tracking called the Vive Pro Eye, though we haven’t tested it. While HTC says it will continue to support the headset and target industry users with its nice specs, we think hobbyists who already know they want an HTC headset for one reason or another should turn their attention to the updated Cosmos line of headsets.

The HTC Vive, our former runner-up pick, has been discontinued and replaced with the Cosmos line of headsets.

If you’re interested in a Windows Mixed Reality headset, we originally found that the Samsung HMD Odyssey offered the best screen, comfort, and overall experience. There’s now a newer version called the Odyssey+ available. But Windows Quest 360 care login Reality headsets, in our experience, have less reliable tracking and less content, and worse controllers than Oculus and HTC headsets.

The Microsoft HoloLens 2 and the Magic Leap offer augmented reality, not virtual reality—they overlay virtual objects and information on top of the real world, and they don’t obstruct your vision like VR does. Both are promising, but they aren’t ready yet: The HoloLens is available only as a $3,500 development kit, and the first Magic Leap headsets were available only in select areas—for $2,300. It’s possible that augmented reality is the future and that VR kits like the Quest 2 are an evolutionary dead end, but if so, we just don’t know it yet.

Pimax has diversified its headset line to include 8K and 5K options, plus eye tracking. But after we tested the company’s headsets at the CES trade show, we were not convinced that they were polished enough to compete with our top pick.

Standalone headsets

The original Quest is still a fantastic headset that can also be used with a Link cable to transform into a PC headset. However, with the launch of the Quest 2, it’s no longer available. Still, we wouldn’t turn down a used Quest for the right price.

The discontinued Oculus Go had enough games and experiences to entertain you for hours, but its screen, controllers, and content are nowhere near those of the Quest 2.

The discontinued Lenovo Mirage Solo shared many of the original Quest’s best traits, thanks to built-in sensors that allow six degrees of freedom tracking, rather than the three that the Oculus Go and mobile VR headsets offer. However, the single controller was stuck in three degrees of freedom, and we much prefer the controller options from Oculus.
