COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) - State parks in South Carolina are tentatively scheduled to reopen May 1 after being closed to keep visitors from spreading coronavirus, officials said.
“For most parks, that could mean the day-use area that provides access to picnic areas, rivers, lakes, beaches and trails will open,” the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism stated in a news release.
Officials said group facilities, like picnic shelters and community buildings, will remain closed.
RELATED The Upstate Region of South Carolina contains sprawling foothills, serene lakes, rushing rivers, and dramatic stone outcroppings. Parks along the Escarpment, the line at which the Blue Ridge Mountains abruptly drop down into the foothills, offer dramatic panoramas of the mountains and valleys that populate the region. Jones Gap, Caesars Head, Oconee, and Table Rock State Parks are all nestled amidst these striking landscapes. Meanwhile, Paris Mountain State Park is located on a monadnock, which refers to a mountain that stands alone, separate from any range. However, I would suggest when you get to I95 at Florence, get on I95 north to exit 170 and exit onto Williston Road. Don't drive through Florence. Williston Road will connect to 301/76 just east of Florence. Continue on 76/576 until it connects with 501. Take 501 to Conway. Just outside Conway, turn right on 544 (Dick Pond Road) until it ends at Rt. 17 in Surfside (about 15 miles). Turn left on 17 and MB State Park will be on your right about 2 miles north on 17. Be prepared for a lot of traffic as you enter Surfside/MB near 17. It is a busy area. Don't get on the 17 bypass.continue thru that intersection to Business 17 (you will see the entrance to Ocean Lakes RV Park when you get to 17. __________________ Member Join Date: Mar 2017 Posts: 53 thanks for the reply. Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2017 Location: Atlanta Posts: 517 I have used 378 between Columbia and Lake City. It is a GREAT alternative to interstate 20. But, I haven't gone from Lake City to MB on that route, so, not sure about the whole way. __________________ Registered User Join Date: Jun 2012 Posts: 344 But whatever you do do not speed through Turbyville. bbva compass checking account login src="https://www.irv2.com/forums/images/irv2/statusicon3/user_offline.gif" alt="mhudson is offline"> Senior Member Join Date: Jul state parks near columbia sc Conway, SC Posts: 807 Blog Entries: 2 __________________ Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2010 Location: Conway, SC Posts: 2,550 I live right off 378, and it's a good option over 501. I also second using 544, less traffic and fewer traffic lights. __________________ Member Join Date: Mar 2017 Posts: 53 Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2010 Posts: 4,794 Quote: I20 east to Florence. I have traveled 378 from Conway to I95 and it is mostly 4 lane, good road. Never traveled that road from Columbia to I95 but actually that looks like a great alternative. It seems pretty direct to Conway then you can get on Dick Pond Road.
I have a friend who lives in Conway and I will ask him.
Update: My friend prefers the I20 route. If you want to avoid interstates, perhaps someone from that part of SC will chime in on 378.

Also, make a stop in Turbeville at Becky's. They have a buffet with mostly OK stuff on it, but their fried chicken is worth the stop. Don't blink or you will miss it. It is in a old gas station on the left heading east in the middle of downtown Turbeville.
Hope this helps a bit.
Regards.
