Credit One Bank® Platinum Rewards Visa Card 2021 Review

Earning Rewards

Earn 5% cash back rewards on the first $5,000 of eligible gas, grocery, internet, cable, satellite TV, and mobile phone service purchases each year. You’ll earn 1% in the bonus categories after the cap is met, plus 1% cash back rewards on all other purchases. Note that purchases made at warehouse clubs like Sam’s and Costco and discount supercenters like Walmart and Target do not qualify as grocery purchases.

Credit One Bank Platinum Rewards Visa also provides access to the More Cash Back Rewards program. Purchases from participating merchants could earn up to 5% back. These merchants are not disclosed until you become a cardholder, so additional rewards may not be significant for your circumstances.

Depending on your creditworthiness, you could qualify for additional rewards or cards not reviewed here. It is worth noting that, if your account is in default (as defined by the Card Agreement), you will not earn rewards for credits posted during that period.

Redeeming Rewards

Rewards are automatically applied as a statement credit for all qualifying purchases and will post to your account within 90 days. While the rewards are referred to as cash back, you cannot request a check or direct deposit.

Rewards Potential

Your credit line is likely to be the greatest limiting factor in your rewards potential. Your unique credit score will determine your credit limit. The minimum possible credit limit available is $500. You should also note that annual fees will be applied to your first bill and will reduce your available credit by that amount.

For instance, if your annual fee is $95 and your credit limit is $500, your available credit for your first month will be $405. If you maintain a $500 limit throughout the year and max out the 5% earning rate on qualifying purchases while paying off your balance each month, your max rewards would be $250.

You are not likely to rack up rewards while your limit remains low. It is, however, a good way to offset the annual fee of the card. Note that carrying a card balance will further reduce your rewards potential because interest charges will quickly outweigh the value of any cash back earned.

Through responsible usage, your credit limit is likely to rise over the course of the year. Credit One will re-evaluate your credit line on a regular basis. Credit One Bank doesn’t disclose the maximum credit limit it extends for this card. But with an annual fee of $95 you would need to make $1,900 in purchases eligible for 5% cash back over the course of the year to negate the annual fee expense.

The qualifying eligible purchases may further limit potential rewards. The average household spends approximately $7,950 on gas, groceries, and cell/internet services. Cable and satellite TV services were omitted to allow you to adjust for your unique situation. Assuming 100% of such expenses are charged to this card, total annual card rewards would be $250.

If your initial credit limit is below $500, it is not possible to charge 100% of the estimated purchases above, but you should be able to get the most value out of the 5% categories. If you are a single person household, use public transportation or have a short commute, your rewards potential may drop even more. Also, if you regularly shop for groceries at Costco, Target, or Walmart, your purchases would earn 1% rather than 5%.

In short, consider the rewards on this card the icing on the cake while you work to improve your credit score.

Pros Explained

  • Credit cards to help build credit – Credit One’s credit cards are designed for consumers who are rebuilding their credit. You may apply directly with the bank, while some potential customers are targeted through direct mail campaigns based on credit report criteria.
  • Rewards cards earn up to 5% cash back – Many credit cards focused on rebuilding credit are bare bones. However, Credit One offers multiple credit cards that offer cash back rewards and other benefits. Some credit cards offer rewards of up to 5% cash back on your purchases.
  • Minimum credit line of $300 – The bank explicitly states that the minimum credit limit offered is $300 in its terms and conditions. This sets the right expectations for potential customers and ensures that there is credit available after any annual fees are charged.

Cons Explained

  • High interest rates – Because Credit One targets customers with rebuilding credit, the risk of lending to these customers is higher than average. To compensate for this risk, the interest rate charged on its credit cards is higher.
  • Variable annual fees based on creditworthiness (up to $99) – Although Credit One offers one credit card with a guaranteed $0 annual fee, several others are variable based on your creditworthiness. This could lead to a surprise for customers who apply and are unsure of their credit situation.
  • Foreign transaction fees of 3% – All of the Credit One credit cards charge a 3% foreign transaction fee. This fee is levied for those making purchases while traveling internationally or buying from an online store based in another country.

Who Is Credit One Best For?

Credit One is best for consumers who are looking for a credit card to rebuild their credit and want the option to earn rewards on their purchases. Additionally, these customers should be satisfied with their current bank for deposit accounts and lending products, as Credit One does not offer checking, savings, and other deposit accounts, nor does it provide other lending solutions, such as mortgages or home equity loans and lines of credit.

What Does Credit One Offer?

The only product that Credit One offers is consumer credit cards. Its 13 cards are geared toward consumers who are rebuilding their credit. At this time Credit One does not offer business credit cards. Some credit cards offer cash back rewards and bonuses for spending on certain products or up to a maximum dollar amount each year.

Credit cards for rebuilding credit:

Rewards credit cards with bonus offers:

  • Platinum Rewards Visa
  • Credit One Bank American Express Card
  • Platinum Rewards Visa With No Annual Fee
  • Platinum Visa

Credit One Customer Service

Customers are able to receive current account information at any time of day or night through the Credit One website, its mobile app, or automated telephone banking. Live customer support is available from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. PT Monday through Friday at 1-877-825-3242. Weekend support is available from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT on Saturday and Sunday.

The Credit One mobile app allows you to schedule payments, check balances and available credit, view your free Experian credit report, and more. It is available in both iOS and Android formats. Third-party reviewers give it high ratings.

How to Bank With Credit One

To apply for a credit card with Credit One, the easiest method is through its website at CreditOne.com, where you can respond to a preapproved offer received by mail or check on your application status. You can also see if you’re preapproved for any credit cards without submitting a formal credit report inquiry. If you’re not preapproved, you can submit a formal application for the card of your choice.

Verdict

Credit One is a credit card lender whose products are geared toward consumers who are rebuilding their credit. Although some credit cards offer rewards, consumers with above-average credit can find more-rewarding credit card options at other banks. The bank does not offer any other deposit or lending products, and none of its products are available for businesses. Keep your existing bank, or look for another one, to meet your deposit account and other lending needs. If you need to rebuild your credit, Credit One is a good place to start. You’ll receive at least a $300 credit line if approved, and none of its credit cards have an annual fee higher than $99. Interest rates are higher than average, which provides an incentive for customers to pay off their balance in full each month to avoid being charged interest on purchases.

One such bank is Credit One Bank, which currently offers seven cash-back rewards credit cards. Some of these credit cards are targeted toward consumers with average to excellent credit scores, while others are designed for consumers who are working to build or repair their credit. Let’s take a closer look at Credit One’s credit cards.

More details on the best Credit One credit cards

Let’s take a look at the details of each of the Credit One credit cards currently accepting applications.

Platinum Rewards Visa: Best for cash-back rewards

(Photo by John Gribben for The Points Guy)

Why this is the best for cash-back rewards: You can earn 5% cash back on select purchases, as well as 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Rewards rate: Earn 5% cash-back rewards on the first $5,000 of eligible gas, grocery, internet, cable, satellite TV and mobile phone service purchases each year, then 1% thereafter. Earn unlimited 1% cash-back rewards on all other purchases you make with this card.

Annual fee: $95

Credit level: Average to excellent

Benefits:

  • Get up to 10% More Cash Back Rewards from participating merchants
  • Free online access to your Experian credit score every month
  • Zero fraud liability protects you against any unauthorized charges if your card is lost or stolen
  • Choose your payment due date
  • Access to Visa Offers and Perks

Who should apply: 5% cash back on select purchases may be appealing, especially if you don’t have a good enough credit score to be approved for some of the more popular cash-back rewards credit cards. If you max out the 5% bonus categories each year you’ll get $250 of cash back on $5,000 in eligible purchases. But, especially if you don’t spend that much in the card’s bonus categories or frequently make purchases outside of the 5% bonus categories, you may be better off with a different card.

Platinum Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee: Best for cash-back rewards with no annual fee

(Photo by John Gribben for The Points Guy)

Why this is the best for cash-back rewards with no annual fee: You can earn 2% cash back on select purchases with no annual fee. Granted, this isn’t great when compared to cards outside the Credit One portfolio.

Rewards rate: Earn 2% cash-back rewards on eligible gas and grocery purchases as well as mobile phone, internet, cable and satellite TV services.

Annual fee: None

Credit level: Average to excellent

Benefits:

  • Get up to 10% More Cash Back Rewards from participating merchants
  • Free online access to your Experian credit score every month
  • Zero fraud liability protects you against any unauthorized charges if your card is lost or stolen
  • Choose your payment due date
  • Access to Visa Offers and Perks

Who should apply: If you don’t have good enough credit to be approved for a no-annual-fee cash back card that earns 2% back on all purchases (1% when you buy and 1% when you pay) such as the Citi® Double Cash Card, then Credit One’s Platinum Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee may be a good choice. But it’s worth considering whether it’s worth paying the $95 annual fee on the Platinum Rewards Visa to get higher earning rates.

Credit One Bank American Express Card: Best for shopping

(Photo by John Gribben for The Points Guy)

Why this is the best for shopping: The Credit One Bank American Express Card has access to Amex’s shopping protections such as purchase protection, extended warranty protection and return protection — as well as access to Amex Offers that can save you money.

Rewards rate: Earn unlimited 1% cash-back rewards on all purchases

Annual fee: $39

Credit level: Average to excellent

Benefits:

  • Access to Amex Offers
  • Purchases made with your card are covered by:
    • Retail protection, which protects a covered item purchased entirely with the card against accidental damage and theft for 90 days from the date of purchase
    • Extended warranty protection, which extends the terms of original manufacturers’ warranties (of 12 months or less) on a covered product purchased entirely with the card for a period of time equal to the duration of the original manufacturer’s warranty, up to one additional year, on products purchased in the United States
    • Return protection, which enables covered cardmembers to be reimbursed for covered items if they attempt to return them undamaged to the retailer, but the retailer will not accept the return
  • Get up to $150,000 in travel accident insurance coverage when you travel using your card
  • Get car rental loss and damage insurance that provides coverage against damage to or loss of a rental automobile rented in the U.S. or Canada with your card
  • Free online access to your Experian credit score every month
  • Zero fraud liability protects you against any unauthorized charges if your card is lost or stolen
  • Choose your payment due date
  • Pre-sale ticket access to select concert, theater and sporting events nationwide all year long

Who should apply: If your credit score isn’t high enough to be approved for more popular American Express credit cards that offer better earning opportunities, the Credit One Bank American Express Card could be a good way to gain access to many of the same shopping benefits. These shopping benefits can save you serious money, so it may be worth keeping this card in your wallet just for Amex Offers and purchases where you might need shopping protections.

Credit One Bank Visa Cash Back Rewards: Best for consumers with average credit

(Photo by John Gribben for The Points Guy)

Why this is the best for average credit: If you have average credit, this card may be one of the few credit cards in the Credit One portfolio for which you’ll be pre-qualified.

Rewards rate: Earn 1% cash-back rewards on eligible gas and grocery purchases as well as mobile phone, internet, cable and satellite TV services

Annual fee: $39

Credit level: Average

Who should apply: If you are pre-qualified for other Credit One cards, such as the Credit One Bank American Express Card or the Platinum Rewards Visa with No Annual Fee, these cards will be a better choice since they provide either more benefits or a lower annual fee. Likewise, it’s worth considering whether you may be able to be approved for no-annual-fee cash-back cards with higher earning rates, such as the Citi® Double Cash Card or Chase Freedom Unlimited.

Credit One Bank® Platinum Visa® for Rebuilding Credit: Best for rebuilding credit

(Photo by John Gribben for The Points Guy)

Why this is the best for rebuilding credit: If you’re working to build or repair your credit and don’t want to use a secured credit card, you may be able to be approved for Credit One’s Card For Rebuilding Credit.

Rewards rate: Earn 1% cash-back rewards on eligible gas and groceries as well as your monthly mobile phone, internet, cable and satellite TV services

Annual fee: $75 for the first year, then $99 annually. For some accounts, the annual fee for the second and future years will be divided into 12 equal portions and one portion will be billed each month of the applicable year. For other accounts, the annual fee for the second year and future years will be billed annually.

Credit level: Rebuilding

Benefits:

Who should apply: If you’re looking to build or repair your credit, this card may be one of the few unsecured credit cards for which you can get approved. If you have a low credit score, the Platinum Visa For Rebuilding Credit may be a good alternative to a secured credit card.

Pros and cons of Credit One credit cards

Credit One credit cards can provide a rewards-earning option for consumers who don’t have strong enough credit to be approved for many of the top rewards credit cards. Here are some of the positives of Credit One credit cards:

  • Options for various levels of credit, from rebuilding to excellent
  • All cards provide cash-back rewards
  • All cards provide free online access to your Experian credit score every month
  • All cards offer zero fraud liability if your card is lost or stolen
  • All cardholders receive automatic account reviews for credit line increase opportunities
  • Visa cards offer access to Visa Offers and Perks while Amex cards offer access to Amex Offers
  • All cards offer optional credit protection, which may pay the minimum payment due on your billing statement for up to six benefit payments if the primary cardholder enrolls and then becomes involuntarily unemployed or disabled.

Even the most competitive of the Credit One cards, the Platinum Rewards Visa, isn’t all that competitive in the cash-back credit cards landscape though. Here are some of the primary negatives of Credit One credit cards:

Should I enroll in Credit One’s credit protection program?

All Credit One credit cards offer optional credit protection, which will pay the minimum payment due on your billing statement for up to six benefit payments if the primary cardholder enrolls and then becomes involuntarily unemployed or disabled. Credit protection cancels the full balance (up to $10,000) in the event of death.

The monthly cost of optional credit protection is $0.96 for each $100, or part thereof, of the new balance on your monthly billing statement. If you take advantage of the optional credit protection, you’ll continue to accrue interest and other fees during the benefit period but you will not be able to use your account for any purpose.
