The New Bank of america phone app You'll Get Hacked: Through That Banking App on Your Phone

You’ve changed your computer passwords and you stay away from dodgy Wi-Fi hotspots. But hackers have found a new way to access your online banking accounts — and it’s on the rise across America.

Hackers are accessing smartphone users’ bank accounts through an increasingly inventive array of malware attacks, ranging from text messages to gaming apps.

As many as 3 percent of Android users have encountered a mobile threat in the past year, said Mike Murray, vice president of security at Lookout, a mobile app security firm. “While that number may seem relatively low, consider a business with 1,000 employees who use their phones for work and personal matters. That means 30 of them are potentially exposing the business to a threat, making this an even more serious problem.”

An estimated 43 percent of smartphone users who have a bank account used some form of mobile banking, according to the most recent Federal Reserve Consumers and Mobile Financial Services report covering 2015. And yet: "I know almost no one who has security software on their phone," Murray told NBC News.

Of the 781 data breaches tracked in the United States last year, 71 were banking-related, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center. Though that might appear to be a fairly low incidence, it is double what was reported the previous year.

People just bank of america phone app taking the same precautions to secure their phones the way they would their computers, leaving them in a vulnerable position, said Murray.

New Names, Old Tricks

Hackers' tricks include places you wouldn't expect, such as the Black Jack Free App in the Google Play store.

While the app, which has since been removed, promoted a fun game, Lookout found it had a hidden agenda.

"Apps from this malware family silently download a secondary app that displays overlay windows over legitimate banking apps and some other popular apps such as Facebook and Skype to trick people into entering their online banking credentials and credit card information," a Lookout blog post explained in May.

In another instance, a security researcher in Sweden found just a few lines of code exposed a vulnerability that could have allowed a bad actor to steal as much as $25 billion from bank of america phone app Indian bank, according to Motherboard.

While banks in the United States all have levels of fraud protection, a digital heist can create a major headache and even raise questions of liability bank of america phone app a phishing attack is used, Alex Bank of america phone app, founder of HackerOne, a bug bounty firm.

One common phishing tactic involves posing as a company and sending a user to a site that appears legitimate, prompting them to enter their account credentials.

"Anytime someone is asking you do something online or take an action, you should be extremely skeptical," Rice told NBC News.

Trading the Password for a Selfie

As hackers continue to repackage the same tricks and find new vulnerabilities to exploit, one company is trading passwords for selfies.

"It takes half a second. You would hold the phone the ordinary way and you would take a selfie. If it is really you, you are logged in," Chris Barnett, executive vice president of sales and marketing at EyeVerify, told NBC News.

The selfie technology has about 1 in 50,000 odds of not letting the right person in or being fooled, Barnett said. “If I left my phone at a football game, everyone at the stadium would have to try it," Barnett said, noting that this method addresses something he calls "password pain."

"When I am on a mobile device, I have to use my thumbs to type the password, and most password managers don’t work in apps," he said. "Speed and convenience is also so much more important on mobile."

Three Things You Can Do Bank of america phone app to Stay Safe

The experts NBC News talked to all agreed that mobile banking is a convenience we should continue to enjoy. However, they noted it's crucial to take a proactive approach to your security.

Robert Siciliano, CEO of IDTheftSecurity.com, recommends people stay vigilant by asking their bank or credit card company to alert them any time a transaction is completed that is above a certain amount.

"They all provide some level of notification in regards to transactions," he said. "You can get a text, an email every time there is a charge, withdrawal, deposit — these are all options. I think that is such a great thing so you can know if something is happening in real time."

The second action experts recommend is making sure you are running the latest version of any apps, and that your operating system is up to date. This will ensure you're working with bank of america phone app most secure versions available.

The final action is one Murray of Lookout says most people haven't done: Download an anti-virus app on your smartphone.

Bank Of America Mobile App Says Money Orders Are Allowed, Rejects My Money Order Deposit

Before snapping photos of her money order with Bank of America’s mobile deposit app, April took the time to make sure that money orders were permitted. She lives 200 miles away from the nearest Bank of America (yes, there is such a place in this country) and can’t go to a branch or ATM to deposit it. The app’s “help” section said that money orders are totally allowed, so she went ahead with the deposit. They rejected it, and customer service told her that money orders can’t be deposited with the mobile app. Well, fine. Maybe she’ll just go ahead and deposit that money order at a bank that’s local to her.

Today, I attempted to deposit a money order via Bank of America Mobile Deposit, after thoroughly checking in the Help section under “Acceptable Items” that Money Orders were, indeed, able to be deposited in this way.

When my clear, well-lit, well-framed photos were returned as “Cannot Be Read” several times, I contact customer support, who informed me that, despite the very clearly worded information available in the app’s Help menu, ONLY checks can be deposited this way, and I would need to travel to a BofA location to deposit my money order.
Now, I moved to Montana from Massachusetts recently and have only kept my 8-year-old Bank of America account despite their lack of locations in this and many neighboring states because I am able to deposit checks via Mobile Deposit. (The nearest ATM or Branch is over 200 miles away.) When I pointed this out to the Customer Service rep and said that these sorts of oversights and misinformation could result in closing my account, she told me they wanted to keep me as a customer but could offer no alternative solutions.

We sent an e-mail to Bank of America’s media contact to see whether they know what the mobile deposit policy on money order is, because the app designers and their own customer service staff clearly don’t agree.

Mobile banking in the U.S.- statistics & facts

Mobile banking involves using a mobile device to carry out financial transactions. For instance, clients may pay bills or transfer money between accounts using their bank’s app on their smartphone or tablet. Over three quarters of Americans used a mobile device the last time they checked their account balance. Usage of mobile banking has been steadily increasing among Bank of America customers since 2012.

In the United States, the usage of mobile banking differs among demographic groups. A 2018 survey examined this topic and found that 69.3 percent of Millennials used mobile banking. In contrast, only 24 percent of Baby boomers used it. Most community banks didn't have a mobile app as of 2018, which may prove problematic if they want to attract younger customers.

Mobile banking offers flexibility and convenience to bank consumers, who wish to carry out financial transactions outside of traditional bank branch hours and from any location. In a 2018 survey, 90 percent of the respondents started using mobile banking apps to view their account balance. Many mobile banking users cited having a greater awareness of their financial situation as the biggest benefit of mobile banking. Mobile banking users were more likely to know their exact balance than other banking customers were in 2018.

New York, NY, USA - May 5, 2017: A Bank of America branch office as seen on Eighth Avenue in New York City.

Bank of America (BAC) has close to 40 million customers who bank digitally. Around 30 million of which use the bank’s app and 10 million use its virtual assistant, Erica — a cornerstone of the bank’s digital strategy.

But that’s not enough for America’s second-largest bank by total assets ($2.4 trillion) — and perhaps most digitally advanced — bank. Starting in the second week of December, the bank will deposit $15 into the accounts of customers if they try mobile check deposit, transfer money to someone via the Zelle app, and use mobile bill pay by Jan. 17.

Customers can see if they’re eligible via the app, but will also be notified of eligibility if they try to deposit a check at an ATM or at a bank. The machine or a teller will inform them that they’ll be compensated if they do their transactions on their phones.

While many customers are younger with considerable experience with digital banking, Bank of America has plenty of customers who aren’t as comfortable with the latest banking technology and don’t yet know the full capabilities of a digital app. This promotion is a way of nudging them to step into the digital world a bit further.

Why pay people money to deposit checks?

For the bank, it’s also a simple question of math and unit economics. The app is cheaper to operate.

“Taking a check into a financial center and handing it to a teller is more expensive than putting it into an ATM,” said David Tyrie, Bank of America’s head of Advanced Solutions and Digital Banking. “And depositing a check in an ATM machine costs more than mobile check deposit.”

The bank began mobile check deposit technology back in 2012 — USAA debuted the tech in 2009 — after seeing that it could dramatically shorten teller lines if it found another way for bank customers to deposit checks. Since then it’s become a standard feature for mobile banking apps.

(Photo Illustration by Igor Golovniov/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank is currently testing paying customers to deposit checks and use its other digital offerings with a million users who haven’t yet used all the functionality of the app. For Bank of America, engagement is key to its digital strategy, which is centered on its Alexa-like chatbot Erica, customization and personalization, and smoother interactions.

“It’s one thing to be focused on how many digital users you have, but you will eventually get to a stage where it’s now not how many users you have but what kind of engagement,” said Tyrie.

Tyrie’s team wants people to do more than simply look up their account balance, but to actually bank from the app itself when possible. A lot of things are really easy and don’t require much in the way of hand holding. But Tyrie is quick to note that there’s always the choice of having a high-touch approach with a human if necessary by walking into one of the 4,300 physical banking branches.

In the bank’s view, and the view of most of its customers, digital is preferable in most cases. Of the 10 billion customer interactions per year, 8 billion of them are also digital customers.

“When it comes to transactions, there’s virtually nothing you can’t do on the digital experience that you can do at a financial center except taking out physical cash or get certain documents notarized,” said Tyrie. “But everything else you can do.”

And for now, the bank might pay you to learn that yourself.

Sarcasm aside, mobile check depositing is the one thing that users of Bank of America's mobile app have been craving more than any other. The rest of the now standard features are still here, including transfers, bill pay and the new ability to transfer money to others by simple phone number or email exchange. There's also the new BankAmeriDealsTM [sic] feature, a cash-back loyalty program with participating retailers. The app's still not much to look at and there's certainly speedier options out there (like using the mobile web site) but it's good to see that Bank of America is at least trying to move with the times.

Thanks, @JirafoBo!
