NIKE SHOE BOT (NSB) REVIEW. THIS BOT WORKS, BUT AT THAT PRICE?

Insane site list to drop from but a pricey bot

If you know what you’re doing and have experience with botting, then NSB could be a good choice.

NSB is definitely not a good bot for beginners. When you are starting to learn how to bot, you will make a lot of mistakes, this is how you will learn.

If you pay $499 for 1 year, most / all of this time will be spent learning and it is very likely that you won’t be making any money back. This means that by the end of the year you will be $499 down. You will then have to spend another $499 or buy a cheaper bot.

To buy NSB for a year costs more than buying Eve AIO for lifetime, this puts it into perspective how expensive NSB is. You have to be sure that you will really cook with NSB more than you would with any other bot.

For most people, I would recommend buying another AIO bot as there are a lot of other bots which perform just as well as NSB and are significantly cheaper in the long run.

Everything you need to know about preventing sneaker bots

If you’re a sneaker retailer, you know bots are a huge problem in the $42 billion sneaker business.

According to Imperva’s 2020 Bad Bot report over 18% of traffic to ecommerce sites comes from bad bots.

But sneakerheads know that in their world, bots dominate the game. On hyped releases, close to 100% of traffic comes from bots, according to Akamai’s director of threat research.

Limited-edition releases and high-profile collaborations generate so much demand that an entire resale industry has emerged.

Sneakers become assets, just like stocks or artwork. If you visited StockX—what the New York Times called “A Nasdaq for Sneakerheads”—you’d be forgiven for thinking you were looking at shares of Nike stock, not a resale site for Nike sneakers.

Where the money and hype are, bots follow.

Jordan 1 Retro on StockX sneaker resale site

Bad bots 1st grade math lessons bad for business. They erode the trust sneakerheads have in your brand. They sever the connection with genuine customers who could return to buy and evangelize your brand. And they create overwhelming traffic that can crash your site, losing sales on products across the board.

But what can retailers do? How did we get here? Will legislation fix things? How do sneaker raffles remove bots from the equation? Are there other options? These are the questions we’ll deal with in this blog.

How have sneaker bots evolved?

Sneaker bots seriously kicked off in 2012 with the release of the Air Jordan Doernbecher 9.

Nike chose to release the shoe via Twitter. Shoppers could reserve the shoe by being first to direct message (DM) the company.

Quickly, people created bots to scour Twitter’s API and DM Nike after any tweets with terms like “reserve now” or “Doernbecher”. With these bots “you could send hundreds of DMs in a tenth of a second,” says one botmaker.

Humans didn’t stand a chance.

At the same time, ecommerce platforms like Shopify appeared, making it easier to sell products online without technical expertise. With the Nike Twitter releases and increased online sneaker sales, botmakers began developing more advanced bots.

Originally, botmakers would sell their sneaker bots to shoppers who paid a premium to improve their chances of snagging sneakers. Whole sub-Reddit threads like /sneakerbots and /shoebots are dedicated to sharing knowledge on how to use bots to score a pair of kicks.

But then the botmakers realized: why sell a one-time product if they can charge a fee for every sneaker release and run the bots themselves?

And so the Add to Cart services were born. Sneakerheads go to a botmaker’s website, enter their order and payment information, and wait for the bot to do its dirty work. If successful, the sneakerhead pays a fee to the Add to Cart service for the bot-purchased sneakers.

Between the Add to Cart Services and individually run bots, the sneaker industry is currently at the point where close to 100% of traffic during sneaker drops comes from bots.

Sneakers bought with bots

How do sneaker bots affect your business?

Using bots to buy and resell sneakers is a perfect example of rent-seeking behavior. That’s economist talk for profit-seeking without social value—in a word, leeching.

But sneaker bots are more than just a nuisance. When you sell a £140 pair of Travis Scott Air Jordans that middlemen then resell for 10-20 times retail price, your business loses out in several ways.

Missed connection with true customers

Many sneakerheads don’t have access to shoes at those price points. When they’re forced to buy on a secondary marketplace, your brandmissesa crucialopportunity to connect with a real human customer and establish a strong, ongoing relationship. Bots don’t take part in upselling. They don’t return later to buy products from a brand they love. And they don’t evangelize your brand to friends and family.

Lost business intelligence

When fans use middlemen like Add to Cart services, it prevents you from interacting directly with the customer. You lose out on invaluable purchase activity that’s vital to business intelligence.

Flawed data for decision-making.

Sneaker bots skew the analytics you need to make informed business decisions. Fake accounts give a false impression of your customer base. And sneaker bots that hold product without buying ruin your cart abandonment metrics.

Damaged brand reputation

Then there’s just the fundamental unfairness of it all. Without using bots, people buying sneakers to actually wear them stand little to no chance of doing so. When customers feel this way, it hurts brand reputation.

As Yoav Cohen, senior VP of Product Development at Imperva, says, “Retailers aren’t technically losing profits by unintentionally selling products to malicious bots, but they are losing consumer trust.

Just look at how Shopify is belittled as “Botify” on social media channels.

Website crashes & slowdowns

Bots and the increased traffic they generatecan bring down websites all together, making it impossible for you to sell your products.

For an example of scope, realize that a Supreme launch saw 986,335,133 pageviews and 1,935,195,305 purchase attempts to their server in ONE DAY alone.

Queue-it customer SNIPES frequently attracts 100,000 sneakerheads on release days. When your website goes down, it means lost sales from other products on the website, too.

Nike SNKRS app problems caused by high demand

Bot activity was behind website issues that led Strangelove Skateboards and Nike to cancel their recent Valentine’s Day collaboration.

On the day of the launch, the company said via Instagram that “raging botbarians at the gate broke in the back door and created a monumental mess for us this evening”. Circumstances spun way, way out of control in the span of just two short minutes, they wrote.

Bots crashed the site, forcing the sneaker drop offline.

Strangelove sneaker release cancellation

Are sneaker bots illegal?

At least in the U.S., the answer is no. While using automated bots to buy goods online often violates the retailer’s terms and conditions, there are no laws against it at the current time for sneakers.

The U.S. BOTS Act of 2016 made it illegal to buy tickets with bots by evading security measures and breaking purchasing rules set up by the ticket issuer. U.S. politicians introduced the Stopping Grinch Bots Act of 2018, which would broaden the scope to all products or services sold on the internet, shoes included. But the bill died in Congress.

RELATED: Everything You Need to Know About Ticket Bots

And even if passed, the BOTS Act has highlighted the difference between legislation and enforcement. Just because a law is on the books doesn’t mean it’s followed. Strong enforcement is necessary to curb illegal behavior. The Federal Trade Commission—the agency tasked with enforcing the law—couldn’t comment on any instances of enforcement in the year after the BOTS Act’s passage.

Sneaker retailers could sue botmakers for damages for violating their terms of service. But a 2017 Wired article claimed that, until that point, no sneaker or clothing company had done so.

Given the game of whack-a-mole that would likely ensue when going after shady, often international, bot companies, you can’t really blame retailers.

If you’re a retailer who cares about maintaining fairness, you’re forcedto step up your sneaker bot prevention game.

Are sneaker raffles the solution to sneaker bots?

Faced with hordes of raging botbarians, several sneaker retailers decided to take the process offline by holding sneaker raffles.

What is a sneaker raffle?

In a sneaker raffle, shoppers enter a contest to win the right to buy a pair of sneakers. Sneaker raffles operate differently from a fundraising raffle, where people pay to enter the contest and, if someone’s entry is chosen, he or she wins the prize for free.

To run a sneaker raffle, a retailer collects all entries, either in-person or electronically. Then they choose one or several entries at random to decide who gets to buy the sneakers within a timeframe.

Most raffles require pickup at an in-person location, though some will ship the winners their shoes without in-person verification.

What are the benefits of a sneaker raffle?

Bots only operate online, so taking the raffle offline is effective in removing them from the sneaker equation.

In recent years, several large retailers like Nike and Foot Locker have moved the raffle entry system online to their apps, which opens the chance for bots to manipulate the entry process.

Sneaker raffles are primarily effective because they tie the purchase to something in the physical world. The raffle winners need to show up in person and show a form of ID, like a credit card or driver’s license. This erects a huge barrier for resellers who operate on getting as much inventory as possible.

Finally, sneaker raffles helped avoid the heated tensions that came with the long store lines. There are many documented cases of releases turning violent and requiring police intervention, which a raffle can help prevent.

What are the drawbacks of a sneaker raffle?

Sneaker raffles take the process fully or partially offline in an attempt to beat sneaker bots, but not without consequences.

Eliminates first-come, first-served process

First-come, first-served is the gold standard for a fair purchase process.

For the sneakerhead community, where being on top of the latest trends, drops, and collaborations is a point of pride, it can be immensely frustrating to feel everything is left up to chance.

Sneakerheads have no control over whether they get the shoe. And the amount of L’s (coming up empty-handed) among raffle entrants bb branded promo code be staggering.

Also, raffles can still benefit resellers who aren’t interested in wearing the shoes themselves. They can easily enter every raffle possible, stacking the odds in their favor and letting them continue to flip kicks for a profit.

Sneakerheads taking L's on sneaker raffles
Sneaker release taking an L reaction

Open to multiple entries

Raffles are also prone to allowing multiple entries, decreasing their fairness. For in-person raffles, sneakerheads often bring several friends or family members to enter the drawing, increasing their chances. For online raffles, YouTube videos show how bots let shoppers create multiple accounts across many countries to improve their odds.

Removes marketing hype

Because raffles involve a delay between entering and winning (or more likely losing), they end up deflating the hype that a popular online launch can generate.

Is not transparent

How raffle winners are selected is not at all transparent. It conjures up images of store managers picking the names of their friends out of a hat, or shoppers bribing store managers to pick their name.

Customers don’t have insight into what’s going on, or how the raffle is run. Because raffles lack transparency, they score low on perceived fairness.

Limits to physical locations

Bringing the sneaker retail online equalized access to the market.

The hottest releases were no longer limited to sneakerheads living in metropolitan areas like New York or Los Angeles. A kid in rural Nebraska had the same chance to buy a pair of limited-edition kicks as someone nsb bot for sale Manhattan.

With raffles that require in-store pickup, however, many sneakerheads in rural and suburban areas are unfairly left out.

Sneaker raffles exclude many rural shoppers

Strategies to beat sneaker bots & keep releases online

If done well, you can run transparent, first-come-first-served sneaker releases that let you serve a wide audience of sneakerheads and harness the marketing hype.

But beating sneaker bots isn’t easy.

There’s plenty of money to be made in sneaker resale. So botmakers and operators will keep plowing money into the arms race against retailers.

You need to change the economics of bot attacks. That means targeting each attack vector and increasing bot operators’ costs to beat your protections.

An especially effective strategy involves tying the online purchase to something in the physical world, like a driver’s license or membership ID.

Here’s what you should investigate if you’re serious about preventing sneaker bots:

Detailed monitoring

Monitoring is key because behavior will let you tell real sneakerheads from bad bots.

For example, if there’s a high concentration of visitors using the same IP address, it’s a red flag that bots are at play.

At Queue-it, we’ve found over 50% of nsb bot for sale bots blocked by our virtual waiting room’s abuse and bot protection emanate from the same IP address. The bots are trying to simulate real users on a massive scale. But getting unique IP addresses is an additional step that not all bot operators take.

Preventing account creation & takeover

When bot operators try to buy many pairs of sneakers, they need several accounts for the purchases.

On account creation, bot mitigation tools like Akamai, Imperva, and PerimeterX validate biometric data like mouse movements, mobile swipe, and accelerometer data to distinguish bots from real users, and then feed that data into machine learning algorithms.

Managing traffic during the sale

Bots enjoy a speed and volume advantage. They use their speed advantage to blow by human users and their volume advantage to circumvent per-customer purchase limits. When the sneakers drop, you need to target the speed and volume advantages simultaneously.

A tool like a virtual waiting room can help neutralize both. Bots that arrive before the sale starts are placed in a pre-queue together with legitimate users. When the event launches, everyone in the pre-queue is randomized. This eliminates any advantage in arriving early or hitting the web page milliseconds after the start of the sale.

Retailers can require visitors to enter known data, such as a membership number, email address, or driver’s license ID to enter the virtual waiting room. Combining known data makes impersonating real users exceptionally expensive and complex. This makes it a powerful tool nsb bot for sale combat bots’ volume advantage.

Virtual waiting rooms create a highly transparent online experience by giving detailed information on place in line and estimated waiting time.

And a virtual waiting room has the added benefit of giving you full control over traffic inflow so demand doesn’t crash your site. This can happen from human shoppers alone, but bot traffic only makes it worse. Placing visitors in a first-in, first-out online queue off your infrastructure keeps your website performing its best when you need it most.

Stop the sneaker bots & bring back fairness to sneaker drops

Many sneakerheads relate to the below Twitter user when he wrote:

Sneakerhead shows nostalgia for in-person sneaker drops

Sneakerheads feel like they need a bot to have any shot at copping sneakers on the primary market.

And they’re not wrong.

Bots provide the fuel for the secondary market and their sky-high prices. All this has understandably strained retailers’ and brands' relationships with their real customers.

At Queue-it, we believe it’s possible to keep sneaker releases in the 21st century while ensuring shoes get in the hands of true sneakerheads.

Online sneaker sales have many advantages compared with in-store or raffle sales—but only if bots are under control.

Unfortunately, legislation isn’t likely to help any time soon.

So to keep the bots truly at bay, you need a best-in-breed, combined bot mitigation solution. Crafting a tailored strategy to mitigate unique attack vectors before, during, and after the sneaker drops gives you the best chance of achieving successful, bot-free sneaker sales.

Best-sneaker-botsWhat Will You Need?

  1. Proxies—the right type for every site you’re buying sneakers from.
  2. A cook group membership to keep you in all the upcoming drops and copping guides.

But before you buy anything, you must own one of the best sneaker bots in the industry. Yes, you can always go nsb bot for sale a bot that costs less and has a mediocre performance, but that won’t get you near the success you’re hoping for. So rather than making a risky investment in some new unknown bot, you must get one of the best sneaker bots. That’s because, usually, a bot that worked so well last year or season is highly likely to do well the following. So what are the top best sneaker bots in the game? And the most likely to succeed in the coming seasons?

PS: There’s no order in which we ranked the bots. We picked the bots based on performance, features, and price.

AIO Bot

Best sneaker bots aio botThe OG Sneaker bot. The first name that comes to mind when you think about copping, collecting, and reselling sneakers. AIO Bot is easily one of the best sneaker bots in the game and has been since 2014. It supports Shopify, Adidas, Yeezysupply, and is nailing it on Footsites. AIO Bot is also one of the most straightforward bots to run if you’re new here. Now, at the price of $325 AIO bot is one of the most affordable bots for sale now. Plus it’s in stock, so you can literally go buy it whenever you decide to start botting for sneakers.

However, that success and long history don’t come trouble-free. Some drops and seasons have been challenging for AIO too. But thanks to the efforts of our team of developers, we always get back on top of the game. And AIO Bot is one of the most up-to-date bots in the industry.

Now we let our numbers speak for us. AIO Bot users cook on every single Air Jordan release. Including valuable and exclusive colorways like the AJ1 Royal Toe, Satin Snakeskin, Jordan 1 Smoke Grey, and many more. On the Yeezy front, we often score various colorways and silhouettes like the 350 V2 Carbon, Yeezy Zyon, stone salt 380s, and foam runners like the latest Vermillion. You can check more success testimonials here. And to get your game up and running, click below to buy AIO Bot now.

Wrath BotBest bots Wrath Bot

Launching back in February 2018, Wrath bot is not new to the sneaker battles nsb bot for sale wars. But it seems that Wrath is constantly grabbing attention. Thanks to its consistent performance and success on multiple highly-coveted sneakers. This trend of success stuck with Wrath bot typically1. But recently, it looks like Wrath’s performance on Footsites tops it on other sites, copping thousands of pairs every week.

The retail price of Wrath is $350 per 3 months—a SOMEWHAT  reasonable price with such abilities. But as Wrath bot is an OUT OF STOCK bot, it is almost impossible to get for that price. Now, you can always wait for a restock or cross your fingers to win a key through Twitter Giveaways. But the sad reality is, sneakerheads are willing to invest in Wrath Bot gotta pay over $3000 on the bot aftermarket for a key. Is that too much? Yes, it is! But considering the potential profit in sneaker copping and reselling, every penny you spend RIGHT could double in no time.

Mek AIO

Best bots Mek AIOMek AIO is another successful All-in-on bot you’d want to consider. It supports Shopify, Footsites, Yeezysupply, and Adidas for that YEEZY WIN. Now no matter what type of device you’re using to run MEK AIO you can pull it off as it’s compatible with Windows and Mac.

In theory, Mek AIO retails for $300, but in reality, it’s priced quite differently. Since it’s an OOS bot, MEK AIO made it to bot reselling websites for over $1000! But the question is, is it worth that much? Lately, MEK AIO has been one of the better performing bots, copping all sorts of sneakers on all websites. We’re talking Yeezys, Supreme Air Force, Dunks, and Jordans. So if you get over the hefty resale price and think of this as an investment, then it might be worth a try.

CyberSole AIO

Best bots cyber soleFor quite some time, Cybersole was one of the most in-demand bots in the game. Part of this goes to the success rate it has and how much it can help sneakerheads cop. But since performance and success aren’t constant in this industry, another primary reason for this demand could be the profit you can make from a CYBER KEY!

Like any limited-edition item, a Nsb bot for sale key could flip for a markup WAY above its retail price. To be specific, reselling a cybersole license could cash you an easy $1000+. Easier said than done, though, since you first must get a key to this PRICEY OOS bot! Expert tip: you can always opt for the rental solution. In the same way you can resell sneaker bots, you can rent them off specific platforms and sites. So if you’re in it to win but also short on cash, you can rent Cyber and other bots off a Discord cookgroup or even here.

Moving on to strengths now. Objectively speaking, Cyber’s performance over the years has been plausible with success on almost all sneaker sites from Demandware to Shopify, Footsites, and even Supreme. So

Dragon AIO Bot

dragon top sneaker botsAs its Twitter account indicates, Dragon AIO has been nsb bot for sale the game since June 2020. And for a relatively new bot, the performance and success are impressive. Dragon AIO is an all-in-one bot supporting Footsites, Yeezysupply, Adidas, Mesh sites, and most importantly, Nike. In less than a year, Dragon AIO Bot users copped hundreds of thousands of sneakers. Including some of the most sought-after Nike and Jordan sneakers. Now, this much success comes with a hefty price tag. We’re talking about a retail price of $1000. But then again, the “Out-of-stock” label comes with an even higher price, reaching $8,000 on the sneaker bot aftermarket!

Whether or not Dragon AIO Bot is worth that much has to do with how much you can make out of it. But the last year has shown that Nike Dunks and Jordans are real money-makers on the elizabeth banks 2019 market. And if you manage to cop in bulk with such a powerful sneaker bot, you’ll get your money back shortly.

NSB Bot

best sneaker bots NSB BotNSB (Nikeshoebot) is another strong player in the sneaker industry. Very much like AIO, NSB works on Shopify, Footsites, Supreme, and more.

NSB is almost always among the top bots on most releases. From NSB’s most remarkable wins, we can mention the Jordan 1 Satin Snakeskin, Yeezy Carbon & Zyon, Travis Scott’s Cactus Trails, and thousands of Supreme items. And as usual, you should always check a sneaker bot’s Twitter for legit performance proof before you buy it.

So NSB is maintaining a very consistent success, plus the fact that it’s always in stock made NSB one of the most sought-after bots. And if you were to compare its retail price of $499/year with the resale value of OOS bots, NSB nsb bot for sale win.

Balko Bot

top bots BalkoAlso one of the top bots in the game, Balko Bot supports Shopify, Adidas, and Supreme. With a decent success rate and another OOS bot. So you can forget about kicking off the game whenever you feel like it. You have to wait for a restock or buy it for the resale price of $500+. However, there is a cheaper and less time-consuming option which is renting. Renting Balko bot isn’t that hard. You must check Twitter and Discord, and you’ll find plenty of keys to any big sneaker bot that you can rent for a short period.

However, one point that’s getting to the copping chances of sneakerheads would be not supporting footsites. As you may know, most air Jordan sneakers drop on Footsites. And having a bot that doesn’t cop off these sites means a significant decrease in your ability to get some of the most coveted pairs of sneakers in this game. Along with all the cash you could’ve made flipping them.

Kodai

kodai top sneaker botsKodai might not have always been under your radar, but it’s been one of the best sneaker bots in the industry now. It supports Adidas, Yeezysupply, Supreme, Footlocker EU, and Shopify as an all-in-one bot. However, Kodai’s most significant strength could be Footsites US. And since a big bulk of the stock drops there, running Kodai can increase your chances at copping, flipping, and cashing in. BIG TIME!  Unless you buy it for the resale price, which falls between $6000 and $7000, then you’ll go short on money for a long time. And with Kodai, it’ll be a while before you get your money back.

Some of Kodai’s recent big moments in 2020 were The Jordan 1 Mochas, Yeezy Carbon, AJ1 Satin, and Jordan 12 Gold. Check out their Twitter feed for success proof.

As for the usage, Kodai’s interface is smooth and relatively easy to use. So if you’re still new tjmaxx credit card online the game and can afford it, you shouldn’t have a hard time running Kodai.

More of The Best Sneaker Bots

The more time passes, the more sneaker releases we get. And the more changes we see in sneaker bots rankings and performance. One bot that dominated every release last month could go completely MIA this month and the other way around.

So, when writing this section, so much happened with the sneaker bots scene that we needed to add new entries to our list of top bots. We also had to change the order a little bit to reflect the latest sneaker copping edd ca contact number better.

Ganesh Bot

Ganesh top botsGanesh Bot is probably one of the best sneaker bots to perform on EU-based sites, catering to an overlooked part of the community.
In terms of sites, Ganesh supports Footlocker EU, Footsites, Finishline, Solebox, and many more. With an applaudable performance on Footlocker EU and Footsites US.

Of course, that’s all excellent news for EU fam, but if you’re located in the US and want to run Ganesh. Well, you can always resort to reshipping services even if they will add to your running costs. Generally speaking, 2020 was a successful year for Ganesh users who copped the Mochas, Jordan 5 Oregon, AJ5 “What The,” Nike Sacai Vaporwaffle, AJ1 Lucky Green, and many nsb bot for sale, addressing the elephant in the room, the price! The retail price of Ganesh falls more into the higher range of prices at  £550. In addition to the renewal fees of $80/ 6 months. But that’s nothing compared to its aftermarket price. If you’re looking to buy Ganesh and can’t waste time waiting for a restock, it’ll cost you anywhere between $4500 and $5000. Pretty pricey, but as with all great sneaker bots, copping the right pairs will pay you back very soon.

Easycop Bot

Easycopbots top botsOne of the good sneaker bots that joined the industry recently is Easycop Bot. Known to be a Footsites only bot, Easycop is slowly getting the attention of sneakerheads on big releases.

In terms of performance, this bot has been getting an increased number of checkouts regularly. And we can’t help but notice the big hype over this new bot. The number of shoutouts and engagement rate on Twitter is remarkable for a bot just out of Beta testing.

As for the sites, Easycop supports Footsites only. And it’s still not clear whether or not it will add more websites anytime soon. However, for a relatively new bot, Easycop’s performance on Footsites is quite remarkable. As for MONEY, ECB holds the retail price of $600 per year and is available for you to buy whenever you need to.

The Shit Bot

As much as the industry was more about Yeezys and Jordans, as much as it’s about dunks now. And when we talk about Nike Dunks, we gotta talk about Nike bots. Nike SNKRS bots have always been a significant part of the industry. The sneaker botting scene kicked off with Nike bots back when Kanye was part of Nike, and Nike Yeezys were the real deal. A few years later, Nike’s here to solidify its reign, and bots to cop Nike are now the trend. More like the SHIT!

The Shit Bot Best botsWith a unique character, one-of-a-kind UI, and lately excellent performance on SNKRS, The Shit Bot is considered among the best Nike bots out there. Scrolling through TSB Twitter, you can tell it performs very well and cops sneakers that aren’t accessible by other bots. And well, when you add up the number of the Jordan 1 Mochas, AJ5 Off white sail, and Nike Dunks copped, TSB’s users seem to be making some good cash!

According to their website, you can cop from SNKRS from more than 50 different regions using TSB. As for the retail price, it’s a BIG Grand on the website. But you can buy it in Discord cookgroups or on Sneaker Twitter for around $300.

How to Rent a Bot

So, with most of the best sneaker bots being OOS, you’re probably wondering how to get a key. The fact that these bots hold high success rates makes them subject to reselling. The more successful a bot is, the more you’d have to pay to own it. And the more likely their owner would flip it. And through Twitter, Discord, and some reselling websites, it’s become easier to get a taste of success. Without paying full price. Visit sites like Botbroker and botmart to gain temporary access to any sneaker bot you wish to run.

More Bots?

As you go through this list, you should keep in mind that the sneaker industry is ever-growing. And this growth calls for new bots to join every season. But while some might not look as fancy as the OG sneaker bots, they might be just as successful. And sometimes even more promising. You must keep an open mind and heart!

Indian Navy Ship Vikrant (from Sanskritvikrānta, "courageous") was a Majestic-class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. The ship was laid down as HMS Hercules for the British Royal Navy during World War II, but was put on hold when the war ended. India purchased the incomplete carrier in 1957, and construction was completed in 1961. Vikrant was commissioned as the first aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy and played a key role in enforcing the naval blockade of East Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

In its later years, the ship underwent major refits to embark modern aircraft, before being decommissioned in January 1997. She was preserved as a museum ship in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai until 2012. In January 2014, the ship was sold through an online auction and scrapped in November 2014 after final clearance from the Supreme Court.

History and construction[edit]

In 1943 the Royal Navy commissioned six light aircraft carriers in an effort to counter the German and Japanese navies.[1] The 1942 Design Light Fleet Carrier, commonly referred to as the British Light Fleet Carrier, was the result. Serving with accident on us 19 holiday fl today navies between 1944 and 2001, these ships were designed and constructed by civilian shipyards as an intermediate step between the full-sized fleet aircraft carriers and the less expensive but limited-capability escort carriers.

Sixteen light fleet carriers were ordered, and all were laid down as what became the Colossus class in 1942 and 1943. The final six ships were modified during construction to handle larger and faster aircraft, and were re-designated the Majestic class. The improvements from the Colossus class to the Majestic class included heavier displacement, armament, catapult, aircraft lifts and aircraft capacity. Construction on the ships was suspended at the end of World War II, as the ships were surplus to the Royal Navy's peacetime requirements. Instead, the carriers were modernized and sold to several Commonwealth nations. The ships were similar, but each varied depending on the requirements of the country to which the ship was sold.

HMS Hercules, the fifth ship in the Majestic class, was ordered on 7 August 1942 and laid down on 14 October 1943 by Vickers-Armstrongs on the River Tyne. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on 2 September 1945, she was launched on 22 September, and her construction was suspended in May 1946.[1] At the time of suspension, she was 75 per cent complete.[6] Her hull was preserved, and in May 1947 she was laid up in Garelochoff the Clyde. In January 1957, she was purchased by India and was towed to Belfast to complete her construction and modifications by Harland and Wolff. Several improvements to the original design were ordered by the Indian Navy, including an angled deck, steam catapults, and a modified island. Local "knowledge" in Belfast was that some of the trolley buses being decommissioned left Belfast on the Vikrant, to test the new steam catapult on the trip to India.[citation needed]

Design and description[edit]

Vikrant displaced 16,000 t (15,750 long tons) at standard load and 19,500 t (19,200 long tons) at deep load. She had an overall length of 700 ft (210 m), a beam of 128 ft (39 m) and a mean deep draught of 24 ft (7.3 m). She was powered by a pair of Parsonsgeared steam turbines, driving two propeller shafts, using steam provided by four Admiralty three-drum boilers. The turbines developed a total of 40,000 indicated horsepower (30,000 kW) which gave a maximum speed of 25 knots (46 km/h; 29 mph). Vikrant carried about 3,175 t (3,125 long tons) of fuel oil that gave her a range of 12,000 nmi (22,000 km; 14,000 mi) at 14 knots (26 km/h; 16 mph), and 6,200 mi (10,000 km) at 23 knots (43 km/h; 26 mph). The air and ship crew comprised 1,110 officers and men.[6]

The ship was armed with sixteen 40-millimetre (1.6 in) Bofors anti-aircraft guns, but these were later reduced to eight. At various times, its aircraft consisted of Hawker Sea Hawk and Sea Harrier (STOVL) jet fighters, Sea King Mk 42B and HAL Chetakhelicopters, and Breguet Alizé Br.1050 anti-submarine aircraft.[8] The carrier fielded between 21 and 23 aircraft of all types.[9]Vikrant's flight decks were designed to handle aircraft up to 24,000 pounds (11,000 kg), but 20,000 lb (9,100 kg) remained the heaviest landing weight of an aircraft. Larger 54 by 34 feet (16.5 by 10.4 m) lifts were installed.

The ship was equipped with one LW-05 air-search radar, one ZW-06 surface-search radar, one LW-10 tactical radar and one Type 963 aircraft landing radar with other communication systems.

Service[edit]

The Indian Navy's first aircraft carrier was commissioned as INS Vikrant on 4 March 1961 in Belfast by Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, the Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.[11] The name Vikrant was derived from the Sanskrit word vikrānta meaning "stepping beyond", "courageous" or "bold". CaptainPritam Singh Mahindroo was the first commanding officer of the ship. Two squadrons were to be embarked on the ship - INAS 300, commanded by Lieutenant Commander B. R. Acharya which had British Hawker Sea Hawk fighter-bombers and INAS 310, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Mihir K. Roy which had French Alizé anti-submarine aircraft. On 18 May 1961, the first jet landed on her deck. It was piloted by Lieutenant Radhakrishna Hariram Tahiliani, who later served as admiral and Chief of the Naval Staff of India from 1984 to 1987. Vikrant formally joined the Indian Navy's fleet in Bombay (now Mumbai) on 3 November 1961, when she was received at Ballard Pier by then Prime MinisterJawaharlal Nehru.[6]

In December of that year, the ship was deployed for Operation Vijay (the code name for the annexation of Goa) off the coast of Goa with two destroyers, INS Rajput and INS Kirpan.Vikrant did not see action, and patrolled along the coast to deter foreign interference.[12] During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Vikrant was in dry dock refitting, and did not see any action.

In June 1970, Vikrant was docked at the Naval Dockyard, Bombay, due to many internal fatigue cracks and fissures in the water drums of her boilers that could not be repaired by welding. As replacement drums were not available locally, four new ones were ordered from Britain, and Naval Headquarters issued orders not to use the boilers until further notice.[13] On 26 February 1971 the ship was moved from Ballard Pier Extension to the anchorage, without replacement drums. The main objective behind this move was to light up the boilers at reduced pressure, and work up the main and flight deck machinery that had been idle for almost seven months. On 1 March, the boilers were ignited, and basin trials up to 40 revolutions per minute (RPM) were conducted. Catapult trials were conducted on the same day.[14]

The ship began preliminary sea trials on 18 March and returned two days later. Trials were again conducted on 26–27 April. The navy decided to limit the boilers to a pressure of 400 pounds per square inch (2,800 kPa) and the propeller revolutions to 120 RPM ahead and 80 RPM astern, reducing the ship's speed to 14 knots (26 km/h; 16 mph). With the growing expectations of a war with Pakistan in the near future, the navy started to transfer its ships to strategically advantageous locations in Indian waters. The primary concern of Naval Headquarters about the operation was the serviceability of Vikrant.[14] When asked his opinion regarding the involvement of Vikrant in the war, Fleet Operations Officer Captain Gulab Mohanlal Hiranandani told the Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sardarilal Mathradas Nanda:

.during the 1965 war Vikrant was sitting in Bombay Harbour and did not go out to sea. If the same thing nsb bot for sale in 1971, Vikrant would be called a white elephant and naval aviation would be written off. Vikrant had to be seen being operational even if we didn't fly any aircraft.

— Captain Gulab Mohanlal Hiranandani, [14]

Nanda and Hiranandani proved to be instrumental in taking Vikrant to war. There were objections that the ship might have severe operational difficulties that would expose the carrier to increased danger on operations. In addition, the three Daphne-class submarines acquired by the Pakistan Navy posed a significant risk to the carrier.[14] In June, extensive deep sea trials were carried out, with steel safety harnesses around the three boilers still operational.[a] Observation windows were fitted as a precautionary measure, to detect any steam leaks. By the end of June, the trials were complete and Vikrant was cleared to participate on operations, with its speed restricted to 14 knots.[15]

Indo-Pakistani War of 1971[edit]

Main article: Indo-Pakistani War of 1971

Vikrant's Sea Hawk squadron ashore during the December 1971 Indo-Pakistan war

As a part of preparations for the war, Vikrant was assigned to the Eastern Naval Command, then to the Eastern Fleet. This fleet consisted of INS Vikrant, the two Leopard-classfrigatesINS Brahmaputra and INS Beas, the two Petya III-classcorvettesINS Kamorta and INS Kavaratti, and one submarine, INS Khanderi. The main reason behind strengthening the Eastern Fleet was to counter the Pakistani maritime forces deployed in support of military operations in East Bengal.[15] A surveillance area of 18,000 square miles (47,000 km2), confined by a triangle with a base of 270 mi (430 km) and sides of 165 mi (266 km) and 225 mi (362 km), was set up in the Bay of Bengal. Any ship in this area was to be challenged and checked. If found to be neutral, it would be escorted to the nearest Indian port, otherwise, it would be captured, and taken as a war prize.[16]

In the meantime, intelligence reports confirmed that Pakistan was to deploy a US-built Tench-class submarine, PNS Ghazi. Ghazi was considered as a serious threat to Vikrant by the Indian Navy, as Vikrant's approximate position would be known by the Pakistanis once she started operating aircraft. Of the four available surface ships, INS Kavaratti had no sonar, which meant that the other three had to remain in close vicinity 5–10 mi (8.0–16.1 km) of Vikrant, without which the carrier would be completely vulnerable to attack by Ghazi.[16]

On 23 July, Vikrant sailed off to Cochin in company with the Western Fleet. En route, before reaching Cochin on 26 July, Sea King landing trials were carried out. After the completion of the radar and communication trials on 28 July, she departed for Madras, escorted by Brahmaputra and Beas. The next major problem was operating aircraft from the carrier. The commanding officer of the ship, Captain (later Vice Admiral) S. Prakash, was seriously concerned about flight operations. He was concerned that aircrew morale would be adversely affected if flight operations were not undertaken, which could be disastrous. Naval Headquarters remained stubborn on the speed restrictions, and sought confirmation from Prakash whether it was possible to embark an Alizé without compromising the speed restrictions.[17] The speed restrictions imposed by the headquarters meant that Alizé aircraft would have to land at close to stalling speed. Eventually the aircraft weight was reduced, which allowed several of the aircraft to embark, along with a Seahawk squadron.[18]

By the end of September, Vikrant and her escorts reached Port Blair. En route to Visakhapatnam, tactical exercises were conducted in the presence of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command. From Vishakhapatnam, Vikrant set out for Madras for maintenance. Rear Admiral S. H. Sharma was appointed Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet and arrived at Vishakhapatnam on 14 October. After receiving the reports that Pakistan might launch preemptive strikes, maintenance was stopped for another tactical exercise, which was completed during the night of 26–27 October at Vishakhapatnam. Vikrant then returned to Madras to resume maintenance. On 1 November, the Eastern Fleet was formally constituted, and on 13 November, all the ships set out for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. To avoid misadventures, it was planned to sail Vikrant to a remote anchorage, isolating it from combat. Simultaneously, deception signals would give the impression that Vikrant was operating somewhere between Madras and Vishakhapatnam.[18]

On 23 November, an emergency was declared in Pakistan after a clash of Indian and Pakistani troops in East Pakistan two days earlier.[18] On 2 December, the Eastern Fleet proceeded to its patrol area in anticipation of an attack by Pakistan. The Pakistan Navy had deployed Ghazi on 14 November with the explicit goal of targeting and sinking Vikrant, and Ghazi reached a location near Madras by the 23rd.[19] In an attempt to deceive the Pakistan Navy and Ghazi, India's Naval Headquarters deployed Rajput as a decoy—the ship sailed 160 mi (260 km) off the coast of Vishakhapatnam and broadcast a significant amount of radio traffic, making her appear to be Vikrant.[21]

Ghazi, meanwhile, sank off the Visakhapatnam coast under mysterious circumstances. On the night of 3–4 December, a muffled underwater explosion was detected by a coastal battery. The next morning, a local fisherman observed flotsam near the coast, causing Indian naval officials to suspect a vessel had sunk off the coast. The next day, a clearance diving team was sent to search the area, and they confirmed that Ghazi had sunk in shallow waters.[22]

The reason for Ghazi's fate is unclear. The Indian Navy's official historian, Hiranandani, suggests three possibilities, after having analysed the position of the rudder and extent of the damage suffered. The first was that Ghazi had come up to periscope depth to identify her position and may have seen an anti-submarine vessel that caused her to crash dive, which in turn may have led her to bury her bow in the bottom. The second possibility is closely related to the first: on the night of the explosion, Rajput was on patrol off Visakhapatnam and observed a severe disturbance in the water. Suspecting that it was a submarine, the ship dropped two depth charges on the spot, on a position that was very close to the wreckage.[19] The third possibility is that there was a mishap when Ghazi was laying mines on the day before hostilities broke out.[22]

Vikrant was redeployed towards Chittagong at the outbreak of hostilities. On 4 December, the ship's Sea Hawks struck shipping in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar harbours, sinking or incapacitating most of the ships present. Later strikes targeted Khulna and the Port of Mongla, which continued until 10 December, while other operations were flown to support a naval blockade of East Pakistan. On 14 December, the Sea Hawks attacked the cantonment area in Chittagong, destroying several Pakistani army barracks. Medium anti-aircraft fire was encountered during this strike. Simultaneous attacks by Alizés continued on Cox's Bazar. After this, Vikrant's fuel levels dropped to less than 25 per cent, and the aircraft carrier sailed to Paradip for refueling.[24] The crew of INS Vikrant earned two Maha Vir Chakras and twelve Vir Chakra gallantry medals for their part in the war.

Later years[edit]

A Sea King helicopter with INS Vikrant

Vikrant did not see much service after the war, and was given two major modernisation refits—the first one from 1979 to 1981 and the second one from 1987 to 1989.[25] In the first phase, her boilers, radars, communication systems and anti-aircraft guns were modernised, and facilities to operate Sea Harriers were installed.[26] In the second phase, facilities to operate the new Sea Harrier Vertical/Short Take Off and Land (V/STOL) fighter aircraft and the new Sea King Mk 42B Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) helicopters were introduced. A 9.75-degree ski-jump ramp was fitted.[25] The steam catapult was removed during this phase. Again in 1991, Vikrant underwent a six-month refit, followed by another fourteen-month refit in 1992–94. She remained operational thereafter, flying Sea Harriers, Sea Kings and Chetaks until her final sea outing on 23 November 1994.[25] In the same year, a fire was also recorded aboard. In January 1995, the navy decided to keep Vikrant in "safe to float" state.[25] She was laid up and formally decommissioned on 31 January 1997.[27]

Squadrons embarked[edit]

During her service, INS Vikrant embarked four squadrons of the Naval Air Arm of the Indian Navy:

Following decommissioning in 1997, the ship was earmarked for preservation as a museum ship in Mumbai. Lack of funding prevented progress on the ship's conversion to a museum and it was speculated that the ship would be made into a training ship.[31] In 2001, the ship was opened to the public by the Indian Navy, but the Government of Maharashtra was unable to find a partner to operate the museum on a permanent, long-term basis and the museum was closed after it was deemed unsafe for the public in 2012.[32][33]

Scrapping[edit]

Vikrantbeing scrapped at Mumbai

In August 2013, Vice AdmiralShekhar Sinha, Commander-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, said the Ministry of Defence would scrap the ship as she had become very difficult to maintain and no private bidders had offered to fund the museum's operations.[34] On 3 December 2013, the Indian government decided to auction the ship.[35] The Bombay High Court dismissed a public-interest lawsuit filed by Kiran Paigankar to stop the auction, stating the vessel's dilapidated condition did not warrant her preservation, nor were the necessary funds or government support available.[36][37]

In January 2014, the ship was sold through an online auction to a Darukhana ship-breaker for ₹60 crore (US$8.0 million).[38][39][40] The Supreme Court of India dismissed another lawsuit challenging the ship's sale and scrapping on 14 August 2014.[41]Vikrant remained beached off Darukhana in Mumbai Port while awaiting the final clearances of the Mumbai Port Trust. On 12 November 2014, the Supreme Court gave its final approval for the carrier to be scrapped, which commenced on 22 November 2014.[42]

Legacy[edit]

In memory of Vikrant, the Vikrant Memorial was unveiled by Vice Admiral Surinder Pal Singh Cheema, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command at K Subash Marg in the Naval Dockyard of Mumbai on 25 January 2016. The memorial is made from metal recovered from the ship.[43] In February 2016, Bajaj unveiled a new motorbike made with metal from Vikrant's scrap and named it Bajaj V in honour of Vikrant.[11][44]

The navy has named its first home-built carrier INS Vikrant in honour of INS Vikrant (R11). The new carrier is built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, and will displace 40,000 t (44,000 short tons).[45] The keel was laid down in February 2009 and she was launched in August 2013. As of June 2021[update], the ship is being fitted out and is expected to be commissioned between 2022-23.[46]

In popular culture[edit]

The decommissioned ship featured prominently in the film ABCD 2 as a backdrop while it was moored near Darukhana in Mumbai.[47]
