Is noosa yogurt good for you -

Noosa is a brand of yogurt (they call it "yoghurt") made in Colorado from a Australian recipe(that hails from Noosa, Australia, hence the name).It comes in several varieties including the Strawberry Rhubarb and Blueberry flavors that I tried.

It's a bit pricier than most supermarket yogurt brands and comes in at $2.49 for a 8-ounce container(which I picked up two of during a "buy one, get one free" sale).

The yogurt is not low-fat or non-fat like most of the yogurt you'll find in the dairy section. The main ingredient listed is "Grade A Pasteurized Milk," which basically means whole milk (there's also a bit of cream and skim milk in there).

I'm not sure if it's the whole milk, the recipe, or both but there's an awesomely creamy rich fullness to Noosa yogurt that I've never encountered in any other yogurt I've tried.

It's lightly sweetened and has that yogurt tang to it but has a thick smooth texture that is like a softer Greek yogurt.

The yogurt is perfectly enjoyable on its own but there's also fruit on the bottom for a bit of variety. The strawberry rhubarb was just lightly sweetened and had a tart strawberry flavor.

The blueberry flavor felt a bit jam but not as sweet and was also very good. I like strawberries better than blueberries though.

Overall, Noosa Yogurt is the creamiest yogurt I've ever had and very tasty to boot. It is a bit pricey but is worth the occasional delicious splurge.

    The healthiest yogurt overall is St Helen’s Farm Low Fat Goats Milk Yogurt. As well as having the lowest sugar content of all the yogurts we evaluated, it also has the second lowest calorie count (by only 2 calories). It also scores well in fat and saturated fat as it only has trace amounts.

    Dr Sana Khan says, “Yoghurt is a great source of protein but I would recommend the ones that are not packed with sugar. The one rated the best here is the probiotic goats milk yoghurt, which is live and has less sugar. It contains just 3.1g sugar per serving and also contains live bacteria which may help improve your gut health.”

    For an all round healthy breakfast, opt for a low-calorie Weetabix and a dollop of St Helen’s Farm Low Fat Goats Milk Yogurt.

Goats’ milk, however is relatively easy to find and easier on the purse, plus it’s not as allergenic at cow’s milk. St Helen’s Farm specialises in it and the yogurts are delicious. Plus they’re pretty good for us too. Two scoops of this with some berries in the morning and you’ll be ready for anything.

The fruit flavoured options already have a lot of sugar to start off with so don’t recommend adding fruit to it.”

However, Total is high in protein, so you’ll probably find it’ll satisfy you for longer than some other pots.

    Dr Sana Khan says, “The fat free aspect is quite misleading. Often when fat is removed, it is replaced by sugar as is in this case. Making something low in fat isn’t necessarily healthier and in this case will be more of a reason to result in an insulin surge meaning you are likely to crave for another sugar rich food a few hours later.”

There is a protein content and fat content combined, then this should not cause an insulin surge and therefore from a ‘diet’ perspective, it isn’t the worst choice in terms of blood sugar balance. However, the sugars and fat present are far from ideal. The ‘fruit’ aspect may falsify this being a ‘healthy’ option.”

    Dr Sana Khan says, “Sometimes in my opinion, when yoghurts are packaged in smaller portions, they may be better for someone who can easily indulge in a large family sized pot. It can help with portion control for those who are on a ‘diet’.”

    6 expiration dates you can ignore—and the 1 you can't

    If your fridge is packed with questionable deli meat, 17 half-empty condiment bottles and a wilting bagged salad, you’re not alone.

    National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day is on Nov. 15, so celebrate by, well, cleaning out your refrigerator. With the holiday season around the corner, the day is perfectly timed to make space for the large serving trays (and leftovers!) that will inevitably appear.

    But how can you decide which food to keep or toss? Many may use the expiration date stamped on perishables as their guide. However, the expiration dates on most refrigerated foods are not federally regulated; in fact, they differ wildly from state to state.

    Let’s break down what each type of expiration date really means:

    Sell-by: This date is a tool to help retailers organize their stores so that products are sold in the appropriate order. It isn’t necessarily a signal that food is no longer good to eat.

    Best-by/Best Before: This date tells you when the item will be at peak freshness. Food is generally edible past this date. It describes food quality, not food safety.

    Use-by: This date tells you the day that the peak quality of a product will end. Again, food is usually still edible after this date.

    So, which expiration dates can you bend the rules on?

    Milk/Yogurt: “If it passes the sniff test and is only a week past the expiration date, it’s generally fine,” said Mary Ellen Phipps, a registered dietitian and nutritionist. Dr. Jennifer Quinlan, a food microbiologist and associate professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University, agreed. “I am comfortable eating yogurt 1-2 weeks past date as long as it doesn’t smell,” she said.

    Cheese: If cheese is past the expiration date, again use the sniff test. But what if you find a spot of mold? “For hard cheese, it’s acceptable to remove the mold plus an inch around it,” said Phipps. “For soft cheese, throw it away.”

    Eggs: In this case, you won’t notice any evidence that eggs have gone bad, but Quinlan suggested, “If it’s a week after the sell-by date, cook the eggs thoroughly.”

    Meat: Heath experts agreed that raw meat could potentially have pathogens. Stick close to the expiration date here. But you can always freeze meat once it hits its expiration date, suggested Quinlan.

    Salad Dressing/Condiments: Use your personal discretion on this one. Quinlan said, “This is a quality issue, not a safety issue.”

    Bagged Salad: Quinlan said bagged salads “will physically deteriorate before they make you sick,” so you’ll know at a glance if it’s edible.

    There is at least one federally regulated item with an expiration date that really does matter:

    Infant formula.

    Because babies’ immune systems are still developing, there is a higher level of scrutiny for the food they ingest. If you have formula that has passed its expiration date, throw it away.

    Still stressed about expiration dates? Don’t be. Jeff Nelken, a food safety coach and accident prevention consultant, said “most products have several safety barriers built in to slow bacterial growth. Fermentation—resulting in flavors that smell or taste “off”—sounds the alarm that food is no longer fresh tasting.”

    As you clean out your fridge, here are some other tips to keep in mind:

    Don’t just consider the date or type of food, but the refrigerator itself. “Most people don’t realize that their refrigerator should be 40 degrees Fahrenheit and that foods stored in the door may be 5 degrees warmer than that,” said Nelken. He suggested keeping a thermometer right in the fridge.

    Phipps added you should “also consider how long perishables have been exposed to the constant opening and closing of the refrigerator door. Opening and closing the door help bacteria grow.”

    Here’s the bottom line on expiration dates: When in doubt, trust your gut. And your nose.

    The Skyrs

    You like things low-frills and power-packed.

    The skyrs hail from Iceland…which is why they’re called Icelandic yogurt. Like Greek yogurts, skyrs go through an additional straining process that removes whey and water. Because of the filtration, some skyrs require four times as much milk as our traditional stateside yogurts do. What results is a thick gel, a bit glossier than you’d see in a Greek yogurt. (Skyr can technically be considered a cheese but functions as yogurt.)

    Siggi’s

    You need to fuel up.

    Siggi’s manages to keep its sugar count below four grams per cup, and its plain variety uses skim milk, yet it all fills you up. (Many Icelandic skyrs are made with artificial sweeteners—which, like, isn’t great.) With 17 grams of protein per cup, Siggi’s provides the perfect sustenance for a morning on which you just need to…well, sustain. Siggi’s is having a bit of a moment. You can pick up a cup at most Starbucks.

    You need to fuel up…but you already ate something else.

    Norr looks a whole lot like Siggi’s. They also get their milk from upstate New York, and obsess over minimalist branding. Somehow Norr manages to carve away 10 more calories than Siggi’s does from its plain, making it a low 90 calories. Consider Norr to be the even more minimal version of Siggi’s—the subtle difference between a thin font and a light font.

    In the grand scheme of things, Aris is a small brand. It’s served in farmers markets across Southern California, as well as larger retailers like Gelson’s.

    Bellwether Farms

    The Classics

Since 2004, the company has prevented the discarding of over two million plastic cups.

    The Greeks

    Go Greek if you want your yogurt to do more work for you.

    In 2007, Greek yogurt accounted for a mere one percent of the U.S. yogurt market. Now, it’s well over half of what we consume. Like the skyrs, Greek yogurt goes through a straining process to remove whey and water. Greek yogurt tends to result in a more sour taste and a thicker, more textured blend altogether.

    They yield a lot more protein and probiotic power per spoonful than traditional yogurts.

    Wallaby

    You’re going Greek for the benefits.

    Wallaby also makes nonfat yogurts and traditional non-Greek yogurts. If you want that protein, be careful not to grab the traditional by mistake. Their labels look quite similar.

    Voskos

    You want something tried and true.

    The Voskos brand attributes its recipes to grandmothers back in Greece. It claims to be the first company to make Greek yogurt in the United States.

    Voskos is definitely true Greek yogurt in its high fat count—60 percent of your daily saturated fat intake. If you’re trying out a new recipe, Voskos is probably a reliable choice. It’s a healthy substitute for sour cream or mayonnaise.

    Noosa

    You’re in this whole yoghurt thing for the fun.

    Noosa is not exactly Greek, but it’s thick and creamy and made of whole milk. It’s Aussie-style, (hence “yoghurt”), and it’s headquartered in Colorado. The brand is mostly known for sweet flavors and chocolatey granola add-ins. The plain variety carries 15 grams of sugar, and that’s with no honey added whatsoever. This Greek yogurt is for the sweet tooth, and that’s OK! Like most Greek varieties, most Noosa products are made with whole milk.

    The Nuts

    Just as they’ve taken over your coffee shop, nut-like creams have taken over the yogurt aisle in recent years as well. The nuts tend to deliver low levels of fat, without the type of digestive disruption you might feel from cow’s milk. They are lighter and contain less protein than most all others. Also worth noting: There’s not much calcium here.

    Kite Hill (Almond)

    You’re looking for the lifestyle of dairy, without the dairy.

    The plain yogurt is made with five grams of real cane sugar, like that in a real, glass bottle Coke, but obviously much less. (There’s a completely unsweetened version too if you prefer no sugar). Otherwise, things are pretty basic here: six grams of protein, and 13 grams of fat. This won’t pack that much of a punch in your day, but it’s a great alternative if you don’t eat animal products.

    Forager Project (Cashew)

    You want to innovate with your yogurt.

    Welcome to Cashewgurt! Forager Project claims cashew milk makes for a thicker, richer blend than almond milk. With that, there’s less sugar too. One cup of the plain cashew stuff contains about one gram of sugar, similar to a low-fat skyr. Protein, as might be expected, falls by the wayside with only three grams per cup, but you could always add plant-based substitutes to your yogurt if you’re looking for more.

    CocoYo

    You’re in this aisle for probiotics, and you’ll pay anything. Any questions?

    Made by GT Living Foods, the same people behind the popular kombucha, CocoYo is a living, (breathing?) yogurt made from coconut milk. The California company says the coconut meat comes all the way from Thailand.

    Its protein and sugar counts are both low—one gram each in the pure variety. The real story here are the probiotics. Within the confines of some jars, there can be upward of a trillion. Serving sizes are small, but pack a punch. You can get 25 billion probiotics per spoonful. For that reason, a jar of CocoYo can cost you upward of $25.

    The New Kid on the Block

    You don’t eat dairy, but you want a lot of protein and low fat. Can this appetite be satisfied by…oatgurt?

    Oat Yogurt

    Oat milk has been on the rise for a while now, so it’s not surprising that it’s spawned other oat-based, non-dairy alternatives including oat milk ice cream, oat milk chocolate, and now, oat milk yogurt (or just oat yogurt, as sometimes it’s made from fermented oats). Nutrition stats vary by brand—Nancy’s oat milk yogurt boasts six grams of protein while So Delicious’s oat yogurt contains three grams of protein—but in general, oat yogurt has far less saturated fat than conventional yogurt, and many brands also tout no added sugar, or very low sugar content. It’s fairly new, but dairy-free products are only getting more popular, so expect even more vegan yogurt choices at your local grocery store soon.

    Here's How Koel Thomae Launched Noosa Yogurt

    You could almost say that the Noosa yoghurt brand was born in a single bite. Almost.

    In 2004, Koel Thomae traveled from Colorado to Australia to introduce her beau—now husband—to her family. They escaped for an afternoon to Noosa Heads, a beach on the continent's Sunshine Coast, and snagged a unique snack at a corner shop: a transparent tub of yogurt complete with a pop of passionfruit on its bottom.

    "A few minutes later, I was back at my mom's apartment having my first taste and you know, it really was a taste moment that just stopped me in my tracks," Thomae recalls now. "It was just so bloody delicious and unlike any yogurt I had ever tasted."

    But while most people might have moved on from the moment—or maybe bought a few more tubs to enjoy along the trip—Thomae couldn't let it go. She picked up the phone, called the company that made the yogurt, and asked for a sit-down meeting.

    You should know, in 2004, Thomae was working as a supply chain coordinator for Izze, then a start-up beverage company in the days before it was bought by Pepsi.

    In other words, as Thomae will readily admit, she had no clue what she was doing.

    "I said to them, 'have you ever thought of doing anything outside of Australia?'" she says. "They said, 'no, we're far too busy.'" So she left with promises to stay in touch.

    Back at home in Boulder, Thomae was on a mission. She tried nearly 100 yogurts, in a variety of flavors and from different brands, in search of something, anything, that would satisfy her craving for the velvety-smooth Queensland Yoghurt she'd eaten in Australia. But even the thickest, creamiest Greek yogurt—which was relatively new to the yogurt scene at the time—couldn't come close. To say Thomae was obsessed would be an understatement. "I was earning a yogurt Ph.D.," Thomae laughs now.

    By the time she returned to Australia in 2007, her boss at Izze begged Thomae to "do something with this yogurt," she says. So Thomae set up a second meeting with Queensland Yoghurt and, after three hours and several beers, she walked out with a sealed-with-a-handshake agreement the company would license its recipe to her.

    Thomae kept her day job. But at night, she spent hours researching how to start a dairy business. She quickly learned that "the dairy industry is highly complex, very regulated—and I knew nothing about dairy," Thomae says. "I was in over my head."

    So, "I pivoted from this idea of doing it on my own and finding a great milk supplier to wanting to find a great dairy partner," she says. But again, she was stumped. "It turns out there are a lot of things you can learn about and find on the Internet, but finding a dairy partner was not one of them. It's not something you can just Google."

    A few literal drive-bys of dairy farms led her to Morning Fresh Dairy Farms and its owner Rob Graves, who agreed to a meeting—in which Thomae showed up without a single sample of yogurt. "I think he literally thought I was crazy," she laughs. But he agreed to see her a second time and—with samples of the whole-milk yogurt in hand, which Thomae had her mother smuggle in from Australia—Graves signed on.

    "So two complete strangers bonded over this yogurt-unlike-anything-else and went into business together," says Thomae. Graves handled the production, while Thomae went to work designing packaging and branding, paid for with seed money Thomae acquired when Izze was bought by Pepsi. (Of that, Thomae says, "all of a sudden, I had this money I never expected to have, and to me, it was my opportunity. I said to myself, 'if I invest it all and it goes to zero, I'm going to go out and get another job.'")

    The pair were prepared to disrupt the industry. It was 2010, when low-fat and no-fat yogurt had taken center stage. Noosa is made with whole milk—in other words, it's got fat—and is full-flavored, with chunks of fresh fruit lining the bottom of each container. To boot, Noosa yoghurt is available only in eight-ounce containers—eight-ounce transparent containers. "No one else was in a clear tub," Thomae says.

    Whole Foods (in Colorado) was Noosa's first retail customer. But Whole Foods, like many other stores, balked when it saw the packaging. After all, an eight-ounce tub takes up a lot of shelf space—and shelf space is super competitive. "I remember having that first meeting with Whole Foods," says Thomae. "They were like, 'we hate your packaging.' They were so blunt. But we were like, 'thank you for your feedback, but that’s the packaging.'" In fact, even if Thomae and Graves had wanted to change the containers, they couldn't—they had purchased equipment specifically for those packages without doing a retail presentation, and they couldn't afford to change it.

    But like Thomae's initial experience with the recipe, Whole Foods soon forgot about the packaging problem after a first taste. Noosa was brought into Whole Foods. Then Target. Rite Aid Pharmacy. Walgreens. Wal-Mart. Giant Eagle. Publix. Harris Teeter. Food Lion. BI-LO. Earth Fare. Winn-Dixie. You get the picture. Now, it's everywhere.

    Asked for the secret to her success, Thomae says there's not one single ingredient. Instead, it's a recipe of desire, luck, and a little bit of not letting fear get in the way.

    "I was someone highly motivated by delicious food," she says. "That was where it all started, my very selfish desire to want to be able to eat this [yogurt] more than once a year." But Thomae also recognizes that without the unexpected money made from her shares in Izze, and her lack of fear of failure, Noosa yoghurt wouldn't have been.

    "I knew I was going to have to work hard and I wasn't afraid of that," Thomae says. "I think it was the intersection of all these things and timing, and that's something you can't predict. But it's amazing what you can do when you find these things and are willing to work hard." If you're willing to work hard, she says, no matter your food startup idea, you can find success. "Keep your day job, realize you may not see your friends as much, and—maybe in this day and age—turn down your social media usage so you're not bombarded with everyone else's fun," she laughs. "But you know, figure out a way. Ask yourself the question: are you willing to work hard enough to prove this concept out?" With a yes, she says, "you can grow a company."

    6 expiration dates you can ignore—and the 1 you can't

    If your fridge is packed with questionable deli meat, 17 half-empty condiment bottles and a wilting bagged salad, you’re not alone.

    National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day is on Nov. 15, so celebrate by, well, cleaning out your refrigerator. With the holiday season around the corner, the day is perfectly timed to make space for the large serving trays (and leftovers!) that will inevitably appear.

    But how can you decide which food to keep or toss? Many may use the expiration date stamped on perishables as their guide. However, the expiration dates on most refrigerated foods are not federally regulated; in fact, they differ wildly from state to state.

    Let’s break down what each type of expiration date really means:

    Sell-by: This date is a tool to help retailers organize their stores so that products are sold in the appropriate order. It isn’t necessarily a signal that food is no longer good to eat.

    Best-by/Best Before: This date tells you when the item will be at peak freshness. Food is generally edible past this date. It describes food quality, not food safety.

    Use-by: This date tells you the day that the peak quality of a product will end. Again, food is usually still edible after this date.

    So, which expiration dates can you bend the rules on?

    Milk/Yogurt: “If it passes the sniff test and is only a week past the expiration date, it’s generally fine,” said Mary Ellen Phipps, a registered dietitian and nutritionist. Dr. Jennifer Quinlan, a food microbiologist and associate professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University, agreed. “I am comfortable eating yogurt 1-2 weeks past date as long as it doesn’t smell,” she said.

    Cheese: If cheese is past the expiration date, again use the sniff test. But what if you find a spot of mold? “For hard cheese, it’s acceptable to remove the mold plus an inch around it,” said Phipps. “For soft cheese, throw it away.”

    Eggs: In this case, you won’t notice any evidence that eggs have gone bad, but Quinlan suggested, “If it’s a week after the sell-by date, cook the eggs thoroughly.”

    Meat: Heath experts agreed that raw meat could potentially have pathogens. Stick close to the expiration date here. Quinlan said, “This is a quality issue, not a safety issue.”

    Infant formula.

    Because babies’ immune systems are still developing, there is a higher level of scrutiny for the food they ingest. If you have formula that has passed its expiration date, throw it away.

    Still stressed about expiration dates? Don’t be. Jeff Nelken, a food safety coach and accident prevention consultant, said “most products have several safety barriers built in to slow bacterial growth. This Greek yogurt is for the sweet tooth, and that’s OK! Like most Greek varieties, most Noosa products are made with whole milk.

    The Nuts

    Just as they’ve taken over your coffee shop, nut-like creams have taken over the yogurt aisle in recent years as well. The nuts tend to deliver low levels of fat, without the type of digestive disruption you might feel from cow’s milk. They are lighter and contain less protein than most all others. Also worth noting: There’s not much calcium here.

This won’t pack that much of a punch in your day, but it’s a great alternative if you don’t eat animal products.

Protein, as might be expected, falls by the wayside with only three grams per cup, but you could always add plant-based substitutes to your yogurt if you’re looking for more.

    I'm so old I remember when yogurt was the next cool thing. I have lived through so many frenzies over various permutations that I tend to tune them all out, not least because I read somewhere (I wish my cranial sieve had retained where) that yogurt is simply the new conduit for sugar into the American diet.

    Which is why I mentioned the latest life-changing product only in an aside recently, in a post on passion fruit as the next hot flavor. Now I have finally tried Noosa* and have two tales to tell.

    The first is that the white stuff really is amazing; I call it ice cream masquerading as yogurt. It's super-creamy and rich; mouth-feel has never felt so good for something relatively beneficial (with bank of america inbound international wire transfer fee 200 calories for a single serving).

    The second is that Noosa only entered my consciousness by word of mouth/range of vision in this age of mega-marketing.     Noosa is a brand of yogurt (they call it "yoghurt") made in Colorado from a Australian recipe(that hails from Noosa, Australia, hence the name).It comes in several varieties including the Strawberry Rhubarb and Blueberry flavors that I tried.

    It's a bit pricier than most supermarket yogurt brands and comes in at $2.49 for a 8-ounce container(which I picked up two of during a "buy one, get one free" sale).

    The yogurt is not low-fat or non-fat like most of the yogurt is noosa yogurt good for you find in the dairy section. The main ingredient listed is "Grade A Pasteurized Milk," which basically means whole milk (there's also a bit of cream and skim milk in there).

    I'm not sure if it's the whole milk, the recipe, or both but there's an awesomely creamy rich fullness to Noosa yogurt that I've never encountered in any other yogurt I've tried.

    It's lightly sweetened and has that yogurt tang to it but has a thick smooth texture that is like bank of america ui debit card az softer Greek yogurt.

    The yogurt is perfectly enjoyable on its own but there's also fruit on the bottom for a bit of variety. The strawberry rhubarb was just lightly sweetened and had a tart strawberry flavor.

    The blueberry flavor felt a bit jam but not as sweet and was also very good. I like strawberries better than blueberries though.

    Overall, Noosa Yogurt is the creamiest yogurt I've ever had and very tasty to boot. It is a bit pricey but is worth the occasional delicious splurge.
